[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 733724] [NEW] OpenGL based games crash randomly

2011-03-12 Thread charles
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

When I launch an OpenGL based game, no matter which one it is, it
crashes randomly, sometimes in 5 seconds, sometimes in 5 minutes, I know
it is not the hardware because OpenGL based games in Windows XP have no
issues running for hours at a time, I have tried running the games with
compiz turned both on and off, and there is no difference, what is
ironic is that compiz (which also uses OpenGL) has no problems running
at all.

The graphics card is a PCIE X16 Radeon X300, the system is a IBM
ThinkPad T43 with a 1.8 GHZ Pentium M and 2 GB of ram

2011-04-28 Thread charles
Thanks for the reply, but I have since upgraded from the laptop I was
having the problem with.

If I ever get the opportunity I will test the bug in natty.

 Hey charles,

Hi, have you had a chance to test if this bug is still present in natty?

If it does (and if you're the original reporter), please boot into natty
 and run the command:

   apport-collect bug-number

which will update the bug with fresh logs and tag the bug as affecting
natty. (It is best to run this right after reproducing the problem.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 659566] Re: Black Screen, CPU Not Respond

2010-10-13 Thread charles
There's no way that the behavior described here can be a Transmission
issue.

This appears to be a duplicate of bug 626974 but I'm not the one who
would say for sure. Bumping this over to the xorg-server (Ubuntu)
people for a second opinion.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 532047] Re: Plymouth text-mode splash causes X to crash on first run due to shared tty7

2010-04-09 Thread Charles
When I put my notebook in docking-station, with secondary monitor attached, I
still get the same behavior as before (have to press Alt-SysRq-K to get X
restart). The bug is fixed for me when booting WITHOUT secondary monitor
attached. So it seems that Plymouth doesn't work correctly with multiple
screens.
Any idea?
I'm using Nouveau-driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 346440] Re: Wrong refresh rates on Sony VAIO PCG-F409

2010-03-10 Thread Charles
apport-collect requires python-launchpadlib indeed. I just don't have
enough time, I'm sorry. I think this is not such an important bug, as
the affected computer is more than 10 years old now and I suggest we
close this bug report. Are you ok? Thank you.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 981019] Re: 3D desktops crash or are unusably slow

2012-04-15 Thread Charles Profitt
I reverted manually to nvidia 295.20 and Unity 3D was useable, but there
will still issues as 3D games would be unusable. Prior to the update
both games and Unity 3D worked.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 982710] [NEW] Nvidia 295.40 - Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2 Fresh Install (slow performance in Unity 3D)

2012-04-15 Thread Charles Profitt
Public bug reported:

Summary:
This is a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2 to test an issue that came up
after patching a 12.04 system. The system was upgraded from 11.10 and ran
without issue until 4-15 when the latest updates were applied.

On the advice of Sarvatt I ran ubuntu-bug nvidia-current to capture
these details.

I will also be patching this system and rerunning the testing.

Reports will also be sent to Nvidia.

Expected Behavior:
Unity 3D runs smoothly
3D Games run smoothly

Actual Behavior:
Unity 3D runs smoothly
3d Game run smoothly except when leaving the game... the desktop takes 15-20
seconds to redraw.

The architecture of the bug this is marked a duplicate of is i386, mine
is amd64... not sure if this should be a duplicate even though the
symptoms are similar.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 982710] Re: Nvidia 295.40 - Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2 Fresh Install (slow performance in Unity 3D, and EQ Overflow)

2012-04-17 Thread Charles Profitt
Nvidia is aware of the issue.

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=178460

We have been made aware of an interaction problem between the fix
contained in the newest release any any card with a chip older than G80,
inclusive. This includes the full GeForce 6 and 7 series as well as
GeForce 8800GTX and first-gen 8800GTS. We are actively working on
resolving this issue and will provide an update as soon as possible.

The symptoms can include graphical corruption, performance issues,
crashes and temporary hangs.

The release should be perfectly safe to use with more recent cards than
that; I'll update this thread ASAP.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 982710] Re: Nvidia 295.40 - Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2 Fresh Install (slow performance in Unity 3D, and EQ Overflow)

2012-04-22 Thread Charles Profitt
Nvidia has commented:

We've identified two separate issues with 295.40; one affecting
G80-based products and being tied to the security patch. The other
affecting integrated graphics chipsets, which is independent of the
security fix. The next release from the 295 series will address both of
these, while still maintaining the security issue closed.

If you are running into a regression between 295.33 and 295.40, and are
not on a G80 or an integrated GPU, please open a new thread and be sure
to attach all the necessary information so that this can be investigated
separately in the interest of clarity.

Thanks a lot!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 747717] Re: 11.04 - opening too many windows causes new windows to render blank white

2011-07-24 Thread charles s
g9ahwkcm:

I tried what you did, it solved the windows (mostly) from coming up
white, but now the background, terminal and more windows past two appear
to come up white.

here's my stuff, spelled out:

Lenovo 3000 J series, AMD 64x2 running 32 bit

$ lspci -nn | grep VGA
00:05.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation C51G [GeForce
6100] [10de:0242] (rev a2)

here's what i've tried so far:
wget
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/275.21/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-275.21.run
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.38-10-generic-pae
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-275.21.run -n -s --x-prefix=/usr/lib/xorg/
--kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux-headers-`uname -r`

thinking about going down to 10.04, wonder if that will be any
different. worked ok (after some tweaking, not that i can remember
what) in 8.04.

2009-05-30 Thread Charles Dumont
sorry, I had some problems with my internet connexion then I couldn't answer...
yes, this issue is still in the release. more, I installed the jaunty release
on a friend's laptop, with the same graphic card than me, an XPress 200M: he
has exactly the same problems. this tends to prove it comes from the driver I
think...

I'll do the backtrace getting manipulation as soon as I can with the ssh

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 566170] [NEW] window manager display problems

2010-04-18 Thread Charles Dumont
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Hello, I didn't see any obvious relation between this bug and anything else,
neither software install nor modification but it appears after an update.
Sometimes, spontaneously, the border of the windows is hidden, and it's unable
to move them using neither the keyboard nor from the panel menu with mouse, but
only grabbing the menu area at the top whether the window displays one. The
forms inside the different opened windows are still focusable, but the level of
them cannot change anyway. It's also unable to change of desktop item, but the
panel still works properly (menus are accessible by instance) I tried to
restart the window manager using Fusion Icon, or switch from Compiz to
Metacity, switch from Gtk-decorator to emerald, but nothing changes that,
neither during the bug nor switching before, and that always happens.

i'm using an up-to-date fresh install of Lucid

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 416001] Re: Notification and similar dialogs are displaying corrupted after update on Karmic

2009-11-09 Thread Charles Curley
Comment 13 also fixed my problem,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-
applet/+bug/467749, which I incorrectly assigned to NM. The computer is
a Lenovo R51, http://www.charlescurley.com/Lenovo.R51.html. The display
does seem a bit slower, but not enough to be a problem.

I had Compiz enabled when I tested this change, and it seemed to work
fine for the few minutes I had it enabled. I then turned off Compiz, and
then could not turn it back on (no drivers). That's fine by me, but
folks who want their eye candy may have problems.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 426259] Re: [gm45] Display problem with Ubuntu 9.04 on Thinkpad SL400

2010-05-31 Thread Charles Herdt
Mathieu

This is occurring because the driver is detecting a TV connected to the
computer.
Since the SL400 has no analog tv output, this should not happen.
I had the same bug in CentOS, and the workaround was to adjust xorg.conf with a
Monitor section.

Section Monitor
 Itentifier TV
 Option Ignore True
EndSection

and put Option monitor-TV TV under the Device section of the intel driver.
For that to work, you will need to create your own xorg.conf.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 575882] [NEW] nvidia-current : performance drop in lucid

2010-05-05 Thread charles r.
Public bug reported:

After a fresh installation of Lucid Lynx (not via update-manager), I
noticed a huge performance drop in 2d graphics with the nvidia
proprietary driver, compared to karmic.

The whole interface seems unresponsive and slow. Common actions like resizing,
hiding or unhiding a window in the panel, displaying a menu, browsing files
etc... happen with a delay.
It is most noticeable with nautilus, files and folders take quite a long time
to display.
I thought it was related to the window-manager, but I tried to disable compiz
with the same result.

On the other hand, 3d performance seems unaffected by this problem, for
instance blender runs smoothly.
I can also play videos, even in full screen, without problem.
It may be worth saying that I tried to use the nouveau driver with *slightly*
better results.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 575882] Re: nvidia-current : performance drop in lucid

2010-05-06 Thread charles r.
Update : I added the line nomodeset in the grub parameters, with the same
results.
Also, when I browse files in a wine application, it works flawlessly, without
this horrible lag I experience in a native gnome application.
Very strange indeed...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 575882] Re: nvidia-current : performance drop in lucid

2010-05-06 Thread charles r.
Ok, this was much ado about nothing after all...
This mess was caused by a faulty libcairo2 package in a repo I added to my
software sources list (the gimp-dev one).
I switched back to ubuntu's default package and everything's fine now.
This will teach me a lesson.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-12-20 Thread Charles Hill
I too have experienced this hard freeze, which requires me to power off the
machine. It happens maybe once a day, if that. It usually happens after I've
been doing a variety of different things for a few hours. From what I can
remember, it happens while the following programs are open:
Chrome (a few tabs open; has NOT happened during video playback)
Empathy (a couple chat boxes open; logged into gTalk)
Rhythmbox (playing music)

I am unsure what specific action causes the hard freezes; it could be a
variety of things as far as I can tell.

Here are my system specs:
Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) 64-bit
Kernel Linux 3.2.0-35-generic
GNOME 3.4.2
Intel® Core™ i7-3740QM CPU @ 2.70GHz × 8
Ivy Bridge

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-12-22 Thread Charles Hill
I've been taking notes on the triggers for the hard freezes I've been
experiencing. If you want to see my system specs and my previous
findings: (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/993187/comments/604)

Here are my recent notes:

###
Running programs:
Chrome (several tabs open)
Empathy (receiving IMs)

Event that triggered freeze:
Clicked close tab icon on a tab with a couple video elements in it, but not
running, and a lot of images.
###

###
Running programs:
Chrome (several tabs open)
Empathy (no activity)

Event that triggered freeze:
Opened a new partial-window (no tabs in it) as a result of clicking an anchor
tag. Within this new window was a flash player, which would require me to click
to initiate. The freeze happened before I had the chance to click the player.
###

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1103236] [NEW] Choppy and pixelated video on Macbook Air 5, 1. Unable to run/view HD videos at all

2013-01-22 Thread Charles Lease
Public bug reported:

*** I reported this as a question on Ask Ubuntu and was told this is a
bug. http://askubuntu.com/questions/245584/choppy-and-pixelated-video-
on-macbook-air-5-1-unable-to-run-view-hd-videos-at-a ***

I'm currently running 13.04 and the video is extremely choppy and
pixelated on any video program I run (vlc, mplayer, totem etc.), any
flash or html5 videos, and HD videos won't play in a reasonable way at
all (entire frames get skipped and video footage is completely
distorted; I would say it's about 10 FPS on HD videos, really extremely
bad quality). Also, I had this exact problem on 12.04 and 12.10 and was
kind of hoping 13.04 would be better, but it is not. Video in Mac OSX
works excellent, no lag or quality loss, works perfect in that OS. I
would attach some sort of log file but I don't know how and would need
directions to do so.

2013-02-13 Thread Charles Lease
Can please report what is using the cpu (i.e. watch top) whilst playing
back a video?
VLC is at the top, Compiz below, and xprop third.

Then follow that up with the highlights from 'sudo perf top
--sort=dso' and 'sudo perf top' (apt-get install linux-tools). Just cut
and paste the first few lines of where the time is spent at a random
point of time during playback.

This is going to sound really stupid, but I don't know how to copy while
this runs; I tried right clicking and I've tried shift+ctrl+c with no
luck.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1103236] Re: Choppy and pixelated video on Macbook Air 5, 1. Unable to run/view HD videos at all

2013-02-13 Thread Charles Lease
Mplayer is at the top when the video is played directly and in both
modes you provided( -vo xv and -vo gl) , just like with vlc. Mplayer -vo
xv is a lot better quality than mplayer -vo gl though; probably the best
it's performed so far.

Also as previously stated-- the issue occurs with every media player,
youtube videos (html5 and flash). Any HD video on youtube is really bad
quality in HD (especially 1080p) but in Mac OSX all players run with
exceptional quality and without lag in all videos.

2013-02-13 Thread Charles Lease
Getting flash/youtube to work well is unfortunately wishlist territory
since they have yet to enable hw acceleration.
I'm not sure I understand this; in Mac OSX youtube videos (both html5 and
flash) run excellent, the problem is only in Ubuntu.

So my Sandybridge mba can manage playing the 2k Sintel mp4 with
plenty to spare. Can you grab the 2k mp4 and the 1080p mkv versions of
Sintel and use that to baseline performance of your system? For example,
mplayer -benchmark -frames 500 -nosound $sintel

I'm not sure if the below output is what you want?

user@pc:~$ mplayer -benchmark -frames 500 -nosound $sintel

2013-02-13 Thread Charles Lease
Also I'm not sure if this is of help, but someone commented on the Ask
Ubuntu page where this originally was posted and supposedly the problem
was resolved for that person by suspending to ram then resuming which
then initialized the chip. However, I tried this with no success.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1103236] Re: Choppy and pixelated video on Macbook Air 5, 1. Unable to run/view HD videos at all

2013-02-14 Thread Charles Lease
I just meant I have no control over flash playback as it is a
propietary 3rd party application - we have to wait for them to improve
it.

I don't think it has to do with Flash since the same video runs fine in
the other operating system but not in Ubuntu. Also, the same problem
occurs for html5 videos which I think, correct me if I'm wrong, is open
source on youtube.

Sticking with mplayer -vo xv (which is the default if you specify no -vo)
can you please decribe if that renders smoothly, then hit 'f' to make it
fullscreen (or you can pass -fs on the mplayer commandline). Does it begin to
stutter then?

It stutters in both fullscreen and in a windowed view.

Also, since you describe severe video distortion, can you grab a screenshot
or photograph?

The screenshot doesn't seem to capture the pixelation and skips, but you
can see the blurriness. (exact same video works perfectly fine in OSX
using vlc)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1103236] Re: Choppy and pixelated video on Macbook Air 5, 1. Unable to run/view HD videos at all

2013-02-14 Thread Charles Lease
I tried running the command you typed and it error-ed out with 'file not
found' so I did sudo -s and ran the command as root; it gave an error
stating x server 0 was already in use then a couple seconds after that
it seems to start to play then errors out with resolution warnings.

I would also like to add that external Blueray Movies played straight
from the disc are almost impossible to watch due to quality; DVD's are a
little better. This occurs in all players I use (rhythymbox, mplayer,
vlc, totem, dragon player).

If you walk me through how to take some sort of screenshot or how to
copy the errors from a terminal screen/the mplayer terminal, I will post
the errors received when I tried to run the commands per your
instructions.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1165457] [NEW] screen corrupts - 13.04 daily build - unknown reason

2013-04-06 Thread Charles Ford
Public bug reported:

I was running USB tests when it first happened, and then unity crashed
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1161916)

Then it happened again without unity crashing, and then again (unless
it's all releated).

I don't have a working camera at this time, but the screen turned into a
series of horizontal lines, that would scroll up and down with the arrow
keys (I'm assuming it was the webpage I was on) but wouldn't scroll with
the mouse. The mouse pointer looked the same.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1166586] [NEW] Xorg + Unity broken in PPC Live cd

2013-04-08 Thread Charles Ford
Public bug reported:

Booting without any extra parameters gets the general strange
colors+pseudo 8 bit problem.

So I tried the old standby, booting with live
video=radeonfb:1024x768-32@60 which will usually get something running.
This got me a black screen that had popup notifications (Ubuntu 13.04
had a critical error, and network not connected). So I ctl-alt-F2'd into
terminal, and ran ubuntu-bug, copied the URL for this, and then startx.
Startx got me to a desktop background, with the desktop icons on it
(install ubuntu and some information folder). I've got no Unity
interface, no window stuff, but through the folder I was able to find
xterm, and do what I need to do so I can make the bug report. The colors
are good at least!

hardware info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/charlesford42 (the first one,
iBook)

Lemme know if you need me to do anything, I'm certain I can reproduce this.

2013-04-25 Thread Charles Ford
Still happens with the final. Lubuntu doesn't do this, for comparison
purposes.

This is the first one, booting without any parameters.

This is what happens when I boot with live video=radeonfb:1024x768-32

radeon)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 956071]

2013-05-22 Thread N-charles
I'm seeing this on an Lenovo T420. I frequently see it when coming out
of hibernation (because my system is still swapping in).

I can recover by suspending to memory and then unresponding. At that
point the touchpad works again just fine without restarting X.
