[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1066522] [NEW] Nvidia-current package did not install /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-current_hybrid.conf in Quantal

2012-10-14 Thread Norbert
Public bug reported:

I have Quantal with latest updates (proposed is on) on my laptop (Sony
VAIO F13Z1R with NVIDIA Geforce GT 425M).

When I try to install Nvidia drivers (nvidia-current package) I expect that
after reboot I will get nvidia driver, but I get nouveau.
The first thing I checked was presence of blacklist files in /etc/modprobe.d/
which prevent nouveau to load. But they are absent.

During installation process there is a file /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-
current_hybrid.conf.dpkg-new, but then it dissapears.

What is interesting synaptic reports /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-current_hybrid.conf
file on 'Installed Files'. But really it was not installed:
ls /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-current_hybrid.conf
ls: cannot access /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-current_hybrid.conf: No such file or
directory

Any ideas?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1066522] Re: Nvidia-current package did not install /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-current_hybrid.conf in Quantal

2012-10-14 Thread Norbert
If I manually copy /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-current_hybrid.conf.dpkg-new to
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-current_hybrid.conf, the nvidia driver load normally,
glxgears rotating fast.
In Precise this file was installed automatically.

Here is my simple script for grepping "auth_admin
  auth_admin
  auth_admin
true"
inside /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/*.policy files in packages.

How to use:
1. apt-file search /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/ | grep "\.policy$" | awk
'{print $1;}' | sed 's/[:]/ /g' | sort | uniq > polkit.txt
2. execute my script with ./do-pk.sh polkit.txt
4. it will do apt-get download, dpkg-deb -R, grep
'allow_.*auth_admin'&&'allow_gui.*true' and  and print
some info:

...
aptdaemon is not affected by polkit
true
apt-offline-gui is affected by polkit
...

Hope it helps.

2017-09-29 Thread Norbert
@dino99
I understand that we talk about security here.

But users may want to use for example Synaptic on default Wayland
installation. What should they do?

You already have "xhost +si:localuser:`id -un`"
in
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/35x11-common_xhost-local ,
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/60x11-common_localhost
and
/etc/gdm3/Xsession

Is it possible to add new file with "xhost +si:localuser:root" here? Or
.desktop file (see comment #3 here). It will fix many user problems.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1713313] Re: Unable to launch pkexec'ed applications on Wayland session

2017-09-30 Thread Norbert
@Jeremy Bicha (jbicha)
As you may know I created script for automation - see my comment #20
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gui-ufw/+bug/1713313/comments/20 ).
And I collected all found problems here.

I added more affected packages here:
* `apport` because of /usr/share/apport/root_info_wrapper and
/usr/share/apport/apport-gtk .
* `cinnamon` and `cinnamon-common` because of
/usr/share/cinnamon/cinnamon-settings-users/cinnamon-settings-users.py .
* `caja-admin` because of /usr/bin/caja as root.
* `guidedog` because of "Authentication is required to run Guidedog script"
/bin/sh.
* `update-notifier-common` because of /usr/lib/update-notifier/cddistupgrader
and /usr/lib/update-notifier/package-system-locked .

It was too difficult to create separate bug reports for each application for
me. I hope that community may help here. I hope that all we make Ubuntu better.

FYI on other similar bug report dino99 was pleasant about one big bug report

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1242572] Re: xkeyboard-config, console-setup, and ubiquity should use Super+Space for switching keyboard layouts

2017-10-21 Thread Norbert
Got this bug on installation of fresh Ubuntu 17.10. I selected Russian
keyboard layout on installation. After installation I got both
 and convenient  keyboard layout switchers.

Here is my  /etc/default/keyboard :
# KEYBOARD CONFIGURATION FILE

# Consult the keyboard(5) manual page.

XKBMODEL="pc105"
XKBLAYOUT="us,ru"
XKBVARIANT=","
XKBOPTIONS="grp:alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll"

BACKSPACE="guess"

I like keyboard layout switcher, it is great.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1742894] Re: Scilab does not start after some upgrades on Ubuntu Xenial

2018-01-12 Thread Norbert
I saw this jogl bug (https://jogamp.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1357) today.
Potentially other programs are affected too
(https://www.google.ru/search?q=GL3bc+->+profileImpl+GL4bc+!!!+not+mapped+com.jogamp.opengl.GLProfile.computeProfileMap(GLProfile.java%3A2071)&oq=GL3bc+->+profileImpl+GL4bc+!!!+not+mapped+com.jogamp.opengl.GLProfile.computeProfileMap(GLProfile.java%3A2071)).

With newest Mesa Scilab works normally on i915 and nvidia_340 drivers.

I do not know about Bionic, it maybe affected too.

I'll be watching this bug-report and re-enable `radeon` driver on my

+ Original description below:
+
  This is a reopen of bug #36812, which has reappeared in Kubuntu 17.04
  Zesty Zapus.

  This is a bug about shortcuts mapped to combinations which include each
  other.

  For example, if we have Ctrl+Shift (for keyboard layout) and Ctrl+Shift+N (to
open a new terminal), then we are practically unable to use the second
shortcut; this is what happens:
  Ctrl press (nothing happens)
  Shift press (keyboard layout change)
  N (a simple N appears, since a shortcut has already fired)

  The expected behavior is to fire shortcuts on the release (not on press)
  of the special keys (ctrl,shift,alt, etc) which is also how Windows
  behave. This is a serious problem for bilingual layouts, typically using
  Alt+Shift or Ctrl+Shift for keyboard layout change.

  Apparently, the bug has reappeared after the patch that used to fix the
  problem (208_switch_on_release.diff) has been removed from X.Org 1.19
  packages. There is an updated patch in the upstream ticket
  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=865 (link to the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1683383] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts (reopen)

2018-03-07 Thread Norbert
I attached patch from ArchLinux AUR (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages
/xorg-server-bug865/, https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/tree
/freedesktop-bug-865.patch?h=xorg-server-bug865 ). This patch is stable
and reliable. ArchLinux users are happy with it.

It fixes current bug on Ubuntu Bionic Beaver 18.04 LTS.
I have tested it with keyboard layout switcher on GNOME
(DESKTOP_SESSION="ubuntu") and MATE desktop (DESKTOP_SESSION="mate").

Please kindly review it and consider applying it before official final release
of 18.04 LTS.
I'm ready to test proposed packages which (I hope) you would create.
As the result Ubuntu users will be as happy as ArchLinux's users.

2018-04-07 Thread Norbert
@khurshid-alam

I can't determine how many users want to have this bug fixed. So we can
start with the complete working instruction:

1. Set Ctrl+Shift keyboard layout switcher on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
2. Ensure that Ctrl+Shift+ interference exists
3. Enable "deb-src" sources (via `software-properties-gtk`), then apply the
patch

cd ~/Downloads
apt-get source xserver-xorg-core
cd xorg-server-1.19.6/
wget
https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/plain/freedesktop-bug-865.patch?h=xorg-server-bug865
 -O freedesktop-bug-865.patch
patch xkb/xkbActions.c < freedesktop-bug-865.patch

sudo apt-get install devscripts
sudo apt-get build-dep xserver-xorg-core
debuild -uc -us
sudo dpkg -i ../x*.deb

4. Reboot and test again.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Hope this helps.

Users still need this functionality (see https://community.ubuntu.com/t

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 36812]

2018-06-08 Thread Norbert
Just tested simple idea on Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS with MATE DE.
Out-the-box it has Xorg 1.18.4 which perfectly allow user to set for example
 keyboard shortcut for keyboard layout switching.
But when I install HWE on 16.04 LTS I get newer Xorg 1.19.5.

Debian 8 (Xorg 1.16.4) and 9 (Xorg 1.19.2) have this problem too (see
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=891915 ).

So versions 1.16.4, 1.19.2 and 1.19.5 should be patched to bring
 keyboard shortcut functionality back.

2020-01-10 Thread Norbert
The Xorg crash is fixable by preventing the start of Ubuntu MATE Welcome
(I did it by removing whole Snap functionality with `sudo apt purge
snapd`).

@Daniel van Vugt (vanvugt)

`apport-bug /var/crash/_usr_lib_xorg_Xorg.0.crash` says that the problem
is already known and redirects me here, to this bug report. So I can't
report the problem as new bug. If you are interested, please
parse/unpack crash file above in comment 8.

Installing proposed updates does not change the situation.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1796437] Re: X11 crashed when attempting to open Budgie and MATE Welcome

2020-01-16 Thread Norbert
Still reproducible on 20200115 and 20200116 builds.

---

Reproducible method 1:

1. boot installation media
2. select [o] Normal installation, [x] Download updates, [x] Install
third-party software
3. Wait installation to finish
4. Boot the installed system, wait for Snappy unpacking/initialization/seeding
(check from tty1 with `snap list`)
5. Login to desktop session
6. Get crash of whole Xorg after login when of Ubuntu MATE Welcome window is
starting to appear.

Reproducible method 2:

1. boot installation media
2. select [o] Normal installation, [ ] Download updates, [ ] Install
third-party software
3. Wait installation to finish
4. Boot the installed system, wait for Snappy unpacking/initialization/seeding
(check from tty1 with `snap list`)
5. Install Ubuntu restricted extras with `sudo apt-get install
ubuntu-restricted-extras` and reboot
6. Login to desktop session
7. Get crash of whole Xorg after login when of Ubuntu MATE Welcome window is
starting to appear.

Guest settings: choosing video acceleration disabled or 3d video acceleration
does not change behavior. Increasing VRAM from default 16 Mb to 128 Mb (max for
my machine) does not help either.
VirtualBox versions tested:

* 5.1.38-dfsg-0ubuntu1.16.04.3 (from multiverse) - crash,
* 5.0.40 (from Oracle) - crash,
* 5.1.38 (from Oracle) - crash,
* 5.2.36 (from Oracle) - crash,
* 6.0.16 (from Oracle) - crash,
* 6.1.2 (from Oracle) - crash.

---

Removing `ubuntu-mate-welcome` from autostart with `sudo rm
/etc/xdg/autostart/ubuntu-mate-welcome-autostart.desktop` fixes the
login issue. But direct launch of it with `ubuntu-mate-welcome` ends
with another crash.

With virt-manager the crashes occur with Cirrus, QXL, VGA video drivers.
But does not occur with VMVGA video driver.
Possibly kernel (drm) issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1796437] Re: X11 crashed when attempting to open Budgie and MATE Welcome

2020-01-18 Thread Norbert
I found the real reason for the crashes. The problematic package is the
`gstreamer1.0-vaapi` (see https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/gstreamer1.0-vaapi).
It is a dependency of `ubuntu-restricted-addons` (see
https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/ubuntu-restricted-addons).

So ubuntu-mate-welcome and for example Cheese may be fixed by removing
this package with

```
sudo apt-get purge gstreamer1.0-vaapi
sudo apt-get autoremove --purge # to remove libgstreamer-plugins-bad1.0-0 (is
not a problem)
```

So please carefully analyze the crash dumps for errors in
`gstreamer1.0-vaapi` and fix this package.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1745345] Re: Xorg assert failure: Xorg: /usr/include/xorg/privates.h:122: dixGetPrivateAddr: Assertion `key->initialized' failed.

2020-01-20 Thread Norbert
I need to recall that on QEMU/KVM (while using virt-manager the crashes
occur with Cirrus, QXL, VGA video drivers, but does not occur with VMVGA
video driver) and VirtualBox (tested all versions with default
`vboxvideo` driver) the crash is caused by `gstreamer-vaapi` package
(see https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/gstreamer1.0-vaapi). It is a
dependency of `ubuntu-restricted-addons` (see
https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/ubuntu-restricted-addons).

So ubuntu-mate-welcome and for example Cheese with Yelp may be fixed by
removing this package with

```
sudo apt-get purge gstreamer1.0-vaapi
sudo apt-get autoremove --purge # to remove libgstreamer-plugins-bad1.0-0 (is
not a problem)
```

So please carefully analyze the crash dumps for errors in
`gstreamer1.0-vaapi` and fix this package.

I'm not sure about the bug inside `xorg-server` codebase.

Crash on VirtualBox with `gstreamer1.0-vaapi` installed also is caused by:
`gnome-books`, `gnome-contacts`, `gnome-control-center`, `gnome-documents`,
`gnome-help`, `gnome-music`, `gnome-photo`, `gnome-sound-recorder`,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1745345] Re: Xorg assert failure: Xorg: /usr/include/xorg/privates.h:122: dixGetPrivateAddr: Assertion `key->initialized' failed.

2020-02-03 Thread Norbert
@vanvugt, could you please elaborate why do you think that `gstreamer-
vaapi` is not related to this bug (or really bug 1796437).

I see that installation of the single `gstreamer1.0-vaapi` package make
system crash. While its uninstallation removes the crash. Just tested
20200203 MATE ISO.

Do you/anybody-from-Canonical really work on this issue?

@Bill (franksmcb) (franksmcb)

This is a bit broader. VirtualBox is still affected. I use 5.1 because
of 25 VMs inside it.

End of quotes.

I would recommend to test any modern VirtualBox (according to
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Download_Old_Builds this means >= 5.2)
with non-VMVGA video driver to reproduce the issue. And report here the
results.
