Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Store files permanently on piCorePlayer
I've dipped in and out of this thread over the months (!), and I wonder if the LMS setup that I travel with might be another solution. Following a post from several years ago, I set up LMS on a WiFi enabled Western Digital 2Tb hard drive. This has two WiFi cards, so it sets its own network up and can connect to an external network too. It has a battery, so it will run for a short period off the mains. I keep a copy of my music collection on this drive. With this, I can run any player (or a number of players) - a tablet or phone with appropriate software, or a Squeezebox, or a raspberry Pi based device (I use piCorePlayer). At work I use a model 3 Pi winerally play through a tablet and headphones. I use a dedicated charger, and some switching relays. And separate buck converter.Im also only powering an old model A with usb WiFi. That all in one board is nice, but it made me nervous when it smoked. They replaced it under warranty, but kinda blamed me for shorting it.which Im pretty sure I didnt do. piCorePlayer a small player for the Raspberry Pi in RAM. I took a break from the software and operating system stuff to work on the custom hardware needed to go inside this beast, as one guy described. I had to learn to solder very small stuff including board soldering. After watching several YouTube videos, I tried my had at it today. I was surprised that it wasnt as difficult as I feared. I was able to get all the way to doing a plugs out test, running the PiPod with a test data cable for touch screen control and internal power with an Adafruit power controller and LiPo battery. It worked, on the battery, played music and no low power indications! Ah, so technically, it *can't* operate as a standalone player like an iPod. That's a very important piece of information. And I'm assuming there's no workaround? No scripting or module that could be plugged in? Assuming there is no workaround, I do have a possible solution. Can the "network" be emulated by a phone or iPad using wifi tethering or NFC? I could then control the player from the phone or other device, leaving the Pi to do it's one and only job - play music. This would also solve the issue with the small 4.3 inch screen being a bit of a bear use with a finger on the relatively small controls on the touch screen. The beast you've given birth to needs to be connected to a wireless network to play music files stored on your Pi. Once it's connected to a network, you need to bring up the piCorePlayer web gui on a PC, laptop, tablet, phone, whatever, and start LMS. Once LMS has started, the player part of your beast (squeezelite) should automatically connect to LMS. You then need to open a web browser on a PC, laptop, tablet, phone, whatever, and type in the "IPaddressofyourPi:9000" to bring up the LMS webgui, to control your player (squeezelite). *Server - LMS 7.9.2 *Pi3B+/pCP 4.1.0 25K library playlists & LMS cache on SSD (ntfs) *Study -* Pi3B+/pCP 4.1.0/pi screen/HiFiBerry DAC+/jivelite, *Lounge* - Pi2/pCP 4.1.0 > HiFiBerry DIGI+ > AudioEngine DAC1 > AVI DM5 *Dining Room* - Squeezebox Boom *Garage* - Pi3B/Pi screen/HiFiBerry DAC+/pCP 4.1.0 > Edifier R980T *Spares* - 2xTouch, 1xSB3, 1xRadio, 6xRPi kidstypike's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10436 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106833 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Store files permanently on piCorePlayer
New issue... I tried my picoreplayer in my shop, which isn't able to connect to LMS. I don't want the player to use LMS all the time to access music on the network. I need it to be able to read the files on the ext4 partition when being used as a standalone player. Without being connected to the laptop, the player couldn't find any of the music. I booted it up in the house, with the laptop on and the squeezelite browser configuration page up. I turned off the LMS autostart, and rebooted the pi. It shows the picoreplayer library, but it seems to think it's an LMS remote library and doesn't show any music that's loaded on the ext4 partition. How do I get pcp to look at the files on the pi without the pi connected to the network? Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Store files permanently on piCorePlayer
Holy smoke. I loaded more music on the Pi, have been listening while working, and the sound quality is very impressive. The sound seems to have more detail and depth than an iPod, even using FLAC on the Pi versus WAV on the iPod. This is the result Id hoped for. Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Store files permanently on piCorePlayer
I got some files working on the Pi Zero, playing from the laptop. But there was no sound. In the change Squeezelite settings I tried changing the output setting from ALSA to hw:CARD=DAC, because Im using a DAC hat. I saved and rebooted, now it says Squeezelite isnt running and the pi zero cant see the music files on the laptop. So the questions are whether I need to set up the DAC card in the configuration somewhere, and what happened to Squeezelite? Also, I dont know how to copy files to the Pi Zero. AirFiero wrote: > I want this player to be standalone so that I can take it with me, not > dependent upon network attached music. OK, that's what I was referring to as 'the former' - it's quite doable. The Pi Zero won't make for the snappiest server, but it's quite usable. With LMS running on the Pi zero you won't need it running on your laptop as well. Regarding the Samba share that isn't working yet, it's all there in Jeff's detailed post - just make sure you didn't miss a step. For encouragement, I have a Pi 3A+ doing more or less what you're aiming for. I don't have an attached screen, but the LMS and (a couple of) Squeezelite player(s) run on the 3A+ (one for the 3.5mm jack, and one for a bluetooth speaker). I also have the 3A+ set up as an access point (using the options in pCP), so that other players (e.g. Boom, Radio) can be served by its LMS (and then I also have Philippe's AirPlay bridge). Music is on a third partition of the MicroSD card, and it's all controlled via the web interface on my laptop or via iPeng on my phone. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106833 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

AirFiero wrote: > The latter is correct, I'm trying to build a standalone player. So a stand-alone player needs only to run Squeezelite. LMS can run on another device on your network, such as your laptop. And in this scenario, there's no need for the music files to be located on the Raspberry Pi - they simply need to be on a device that LMS on your laptop can see. Such a setup will only work when the RPi is connected to your home network - you won't be able to take this device outside your house, as you could with an iPod, because it won't be able to see LMS. That's what I was referring to as 'the latter', but I'm still not convinced that that's what you're aiming for. If you want a device that works outside your home network it'll need to run LMS on the RPi, and then the music files will indeed need to be stored on a device that's plugged into the RPi. AirFiero wrote: > I'm reading through Jeff's *amazingly* detailed instructions (THANKS, > Jeff!). I want to do this all very slowly and carefully. I'll report > back with the results. Agreed - a very detailed response, above and beyond. Note that one of the early steps is to install LMS, so this assumes that you want to create a stand-alone server+player, i.e. a device that can operate independently of your home network. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106833 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

The latter is correct, I'm trying to build a standalone player. Think a "PiCorePod", like an iPod, but with newer and more up to date DAC hardware, audio codecs, capabilities, storage space and possible customization. I'm attempting to build it on a Pi Zero with the Iqaudio DAC hat and headphone amp daughter board. The display is the Waveshare 4.3 inch touchscreen. It would be powered by the Adafruit power module with a 2500 mAh LiPo battery as a UPS, which can run on battery or line in and the battery gets automatically charged when plugged into wall power. I like picoreplayer because it is very slim, boots quickly and will do only what I need, and that's to be a music player. I got a 512gb SD Micro card from B Photo and Video for $96. I think they still have them at that price. The size seems to check out in Windows (so it's not likely a fake). I'm reading through Jeff's *amazingly* detailed instructions (THANKS, Jeff!). But you knew that - just spelling it out for clarity. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106833 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Re: [SlimDevices: Unix] Store files permanently on piCorePlayer
AirFiero wrote: > I fired everything up again, LMS is started on the laptop, the LMS web > interface sees the picoreplayer, but the Squeeze Audio Device doesn't > see LMS running. I think this might indicate a misunderstanding. piCorePlayer on the Zero is capable of running its own installation of LMS, so you don't need to run LMS on your laptop. By 'Squeeze Audio Device' I believe you mean the web interface to pCP. All mentions of LMS in that interface refer to the local installation of LMS, i.e. running on the Zero. It will never see the copy of LMS running on your laptop. However, pCP can also run Squeezelite as a player, which can be seen by your laptop's installation of LMS. So I'm not sure what your aim is, but you have a couple of options: 1) Leave LMS running on your laptop, and just use pCP as a 'player', which will be seen by LMS on your laptop, and can be controlled through the LMS web interface. Music for this option does not need to be connected to the Zero - it can be on a device connected to your laptop. 2) Forget about your laptop, and install LMS on the Zero through pCP. The player (Squeezelite) and the server (LMS) will then be on the same device. This works, but LMS is not as 'snappy' as when running on a faster RPi, such as a 3B+. In this setup it makes sense to have your music on a device connected to the Zero. I now have a 3A+ doing exactly this (the 3A+ is just as snappy as the 3B+), and I have a compressed copy of my music on a third partition on the MicroSD card. chill's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10839 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106833 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

I'm confused with your terminology and the use of the PC with LMS. You can set up pCP on the Pi Zero so that it is visible on the network and can SSH into it correct ? I will review that process, see if something was skipped. > Start with a USB stick for the Music, LEARN, then move the music onto > the SD card (Its doable but highly non recomended) You might have missed the earlier hardware issues. I'm using a pi zero with a Waveshare 4.3in touchscreen monitor. The monitor uses the USB port for touchscreen data (video is HDMI). If I plug in a usb reader, I lose touch screen control. If I have to plug in a USB hub, the touch screen data doesn't respond, and the player becomes too big to be portable. Also, there are power issues making it not portable. I can do these tests on my Pi 3B+, and I have some applications I'd like to do like a home music player that connects to a NAS and a car stereo head unit, but those projects aren't ready yet. Besides, I really want to test the *Pi Zero hardware*. I want to see how the hardware including the DAC plays sound. I can't do that until I resolve the storage issue. I'll set the whole thing up again, and run through everything. > Get an LMS/Squeeezelite/Jivelite system working first then do the SD > card stuff > > Jeff I've had it up and running on the Pi Zero before, but there was no music to test it with because of the storage issue, and wifi wasn't working. That's what brought us to this point, troubleshooting the wifi. Now I want to see if this player will play music *internally* (not streamed for from an external source), that the hardware all works, and how the sound quality is. I tried Volumio. It works great on a Pi 3B+, but is VERY slow and the GUI is messed up on the Pi Zero. Even LibreELEC ran better on the Zero. PiCore runs the best. I really need to figure out a way to use Picoreplayer on the Pi Zero. I have other music applications that would be fine with a pi 3 and other software, or PiCoreplayer and usb storage. As a minimum a Squeezebox system consists of 3 parts 1 The LMS server This take music from a source (HDD, NAS or some other storage) and streams it to an "endpoint" or Player 2 The Player This can be a Squeezebox 'hardware' device or a software player 'squeezelite' being one. 3 A controller This can be a webpage provided by the LMS server a smartphone or software 'Jivelite' being one. > How does LMS help with this being a portable music player, like an iPod? piCorePlayer is a linux 'distro' that implements one any or all of the above systems (and does all and any very well) and CAN do what you wish however running all from an SD card as music storage is more complex and not recommended. I suggest for what you are trying to do its not the best way to go, try looking at other systems like "Volumio" which will run on RPi and should do what you want with less complexity https://volumio.org/raspberry-pi-display-and-volumio-touchscreen-music-player/ Jeff *Players:* SliMP3,Squeezebox3 x3,Receiver,SqueezeLite-X,PiCorePlayer x3 *Server:* LMS Version: Latest Nightly on Centos 7.5 VM on ESXi 6.5.0U2 on Dell T320 *Plugins:* AutoRescan/BBCiPlayer/PowerSave/PowerSwitchIII/Squeezecloud/Spotty/Player Groups *Remotes:* iPeng9/Orangesqueeze/PC/Jivelite/SqueezeLite-X *Music:* 522GB,1660 albums with 23087 songs by 5204 artists mostly FLACs *Want a webapp ?* See http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?104305-Webapp-for-LMS Jeff07971's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=49290 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106833 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix

Understood, but this particular project needs to use the SD card. I am trying to build a small, portable music player like an iPod. If I have to use a USB stick, it takes up a lot of space and I lose the touchscreen connection. If I have to add a usb hub, I lose the small size of the player. If I cant make it work on the SD card, this project is a bust. Success! 27365 The next steps to getting this to be a portable music player. Advice badly needed... 1. Create a partition on the SD card for storing music 2. How to give permission to copy files from a Windows computer using a telnet or other program (there was one mentioned earlier in the thread that I installed) to transfer the files. 3. How to mount the partition so picoreplayer can use the music files 4. If there's a way to do the mounting and configuration automatically through scripting or a config file so that picoreplayer always sees the music folders. +---+ |Filename: 20190518_133511_resized.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=27365| +---+ AirFiero's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=69090 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106833 ___ unix mailing list unix@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
