Hello list,

Is there a way of preventing a standalone from
being started again once it has already been
started?

A backdrop might be a solution, but perhaps
there are other Rev options?

The reason I ask is that very young users of my
stacks will click a standalone's icon again and again
if the start-up screen does not appear *immediately*
(or, sometimes, they just like to click because it's fun).

Thank you.

Hi Folks,

I just installed Rev 2.7 on XP and obtained a 30 day trial code. It
appears that there is a bug and you are forced to re-enter the trial code
information every time you start Rev up. Can anyone else confirm this?

Thanks, Brian

Re: Clipboard madness

2005-09-22 Thread Pat Trendler

Hi,

For what it's worth, I can confirm the same result as Xavier. It also
happens pasting into the message box. I am on PC XP Pro.

For some reason I didn't think of it as a bug, but I realize now that it is.

It was annoying, but to get around it when copying and pasting, I pasted it
first into Notepad and then into Rev (quicker than typing the missing bits)

Richard,

in what way is it wrong that you don't test what I posted in the first place
in this thread?

PC issue only again?

Again... What happens is that if there is html in the clipdata, what is in
between backslashes gets filtered out...

I copied this

emcacl \\server\fs$\userprog\xxx /t /c /y /q /g SYSTEM:F
OAAD\xxx:C

when I paste it in any field I get

emcacl $\\ /t /c /y /q /g SYSTEM:F OAAD\:C

Tested on 3 systems (w2k, nt4, w2k3), MC and Rev, script editor + other
fields + bugzilla time...

but if you look at the clipboarddata[text] it is correct.

now try it yourself, put the clipboarddata[html] to see the difference!

The problem is that somewhere when Rev interprets the html it strips my text
into

emcacl $\\ /t /c /y /q /g SYSTEM:F OAAD\:C

which quite obviously is not the same...

In what way is it wrong?

Copy some C code, and you'll get the same treatment when you paste it into a
rev field (this was the problem I reported long ago to Scott 3 to 5 years
ago... at least now, it's bugzillaed...

In what way is that wrong?

cheers
Xavier

MonsieurX.com - probably the biggest source of rev links, opensource stacks
and bugzillas on earth!
And some still don't believe me or think I care to report these things
carefully and professionaly without testing...

The only way I found to do this is to get the loc (with mouseLoc) of the

You probably have to make the border thicker than 2 to be able see the

Hi Bob,

Hi Klaus

Ok I thought of another thing.
I'm playing with this one It seems quite nice. IMHO :-)

On mouseup whgichone
global field2delete
if the controlkey is down then
  if whichone = 3 then
put xyz into field2delete
set the bordercolor of fld field2delete to red
--this should make the border red but it does not???
--Q? any idea what the edge of a field is called? I tried changing all the
--colours to red without any luck
end if
else exit to top
end mouseup

-- so pressing the right key when control is down puts the field into the
--variable

on deletekey
global field2delete
if the bordercolor of fld feld2delete is red then
hide fld field2delete
end deletekey

--deletes the field only if the border is red :-)

on escapekey
set the bordercolor of fld field2delete to empty
end escapekey

--escape key clears the border colour so the delete key wont work :-)

But now the problem I cant see the edge of the field being red but I can
see it
red in the object inspector. What is the boundary of a field cazlled if it
is

not the border colour?

Cheers
Bob

Dan's new ebook

2005-08-26 Thread Pat Trendler
I think I must have been the first to try out the new way to buy Dan's book
and had a slight prob, so if you have been reading the prev emails this is
to let you know that everything now is working fine.

But, more importantly, to tell you if you don't have this book yet - then
buy it now. I don't know what the equivalent is of can't put it down
(maybe can't click the close box). There's not only a great deal of
information, but it's great reading too. Well worth every cent. Great for
newbies, in-betweens and oldies.

A very happy customer. (normally a grumpy old woman - bitching about

I'm trying to log activity to a file with what I thought was a simple
approach:

put the date the long time m Return into s
write s to file C:/RHOADS/EEOL2/Logs/log.txt at end

The file is not created automatically; after creating the file manually,
the file remains empty; the path was copy-and-pasted from Windows
Explorer, so I know it is correct; the string s has reasonable contents
as verified with the Variable Watcher; and there are no run-time errors.

Any thoughts?

Fellow Revolutionaries:

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF ANNOUNCEMENT

I know you're busy like me so I don't want to force you to wade through
six paragraphs to get to the bottom-line message. Here are the highlights
of this announcement:

* Shafer Media is now selling an updated version of my Vol. 1 Software
at the Speed of Thought as a SmartEBook (electronic form, other goodies
included, self-updating)
* All of my Rev books will be released as SmartEBooks, effective
immediately.
* While they last, printed copies of the old Vol. 1 are available through
my store (http://www.shafermediastore.com/tech_main.html) for $24.95 +
shipping handling, a savings of $12.05 over the old price.

Now here's the deathless prose for those inclined to indulge:

==

While a formal announcement will be released on Tuesday, I wanted to give
the amazing members of this iist a heads-up about some exciting news
concerning the publication of my ongoing series of books about
Revolution.

RunRev and my company, Shafer Media, have agreed that Shafer Media will
become the official press of Revolution and assume responsibility for
publishing, marketing, and distribution of the current and future titles
in my Software at the Speed of Thought series, effective immediately.

At the same time, Shafer Media is announcing a new, revised and slightly
expanded version of the first volume in what was once planned as a
three-volume set of books. The new edition of that volume is now
available in electronic form only from http://
www.shafermediastore.com/tech_main.html. Over 100 corrections and
clarifications have been made in this new release in response to feedback
from dozens of readers. This eBook is available through the Shafer Media
Store right now for Windows and OSX for $29.95. (An OS 9 version may
happen if we can resolve some technical glitches.)

Not only that (I'm starting to sound like a Ginzu knife salesman here, I
know, but there's lots to say), all of these eBooks -- including the two
released topical eBooks on Rev as a CGI and Rev Custom Properties -- are
being delivered using innovative new SmartEBooks(tm) technology. For you
as a reader, this means that the eBooks will keep themselves current
automatically when you open them, just like software does. It also means
many SmartEBooks will consist not only of PDF files but also of
accompanying audio video, text, and software code files (source and/or
binary) in a single downloadable package. For example, Volume 1 of the
Rev series, when delivered as a SmartEBook, has all of the major sample
stacks and laboratory exercises included as Rev stacks you can run,
tweak, take apart, play with, and learn from.

RunRev will continue to sell the book as a SmartEBook via their site
store. All other titles in the series will be available only through the
Shafer Media Store (http://www.shafermediastore.com).

What about printed books, you ask? Well, we still have a limited number
of copies of the print edition avaialble for sale. They, of course, do
not have the additions and corrections I made in the second edition being
released today as a SmartEBook. We plan to offer a print-on-demand
solution for those who want a hard copy of the second edition but we are
still searching for a reliable, affordable outlet for that product. Stay
tuned for another announcement soon. Meanwhile, I'm dropping the price on
the remaining printed copies from $37 to $24.95 plus shipping handling
while supplies last, which probably won't be long.

At the same time, Shafer Media is announcing a new, revised and
slightly expanded version of the first volume in what was once planned
as a three-volume set of books. The new edition of that volume is now
available in electronic form only from http://
www.shafermediastore.com/tech_main.html. Over 100 corrections and
clarifications have been made in this new release in response to
feedback from dozens of readers. This eBook is available through the
Shafer Media Store right now for Windows and OSX for $29.95. (An OS 9
version may happen if we can resolve some technical glitches.)

Not only that (I'm starting to sound like a Ginzu knife salesman here,
I know, but there's lots to say), all of these eBooks -- including the
two released topical eBooks on Rev as a CGI and Rev Custom
Properties -- are being delivered using innovative new SmartEBooks(tm)
technology. For you as a reader, this means that the eBooks will keep
themselves current automatically when you open them, just like
software does. It also means many SmartEBooks will consist not only of
PDF files but also of accompanying audio video, text, and software
code files (source and/or binary) in a single downloadable package.
For example, Volume 1 of the Rev series, when delivered as a
SmartEBook, has all of the major sample stacks and laboratory
exercises included as Rev stacks you can run, tweak, take apart, play
with, and learn from.

RunRev will continue to sell the book as a SmartEBook via their site
store. All other titles in the series will be available only through
the Shafer Media Store (http://www.shafermediastore.com).

What about printed books, you ask? Well, we still have a limited
number of copies of the print edition avaialble for sale. They, of
course, do not have the additions and corrections I made in the second
edition being released today as a SmartEBook. We plan to offer a
print-on-demand solution for those who want a hard copy of the second
edition but we are still searching for a reliable, affordable outlet
for that product. Stay tuned for another announcement soon. Meanwhile,
I'm dropping the price on the remaining printed copies from $37 to
$24.95 plus shipping handling while supplies last, which probably
won't be long.

Subject: Program bar at bottom of Windows screen is blank

Hopefully someone can help with the following question. A created a Rev
program using Mac and built a standalone for Windows. The program
resides in a
folder. On Windows, the name of the folder shows up in the program bar
at
the bottom of the screen, as it should. However, on opening the (.exe)
program
the name of the the .exe program is blank in the program bar. One user
has
mentioned that this could confuse people into thinking spyware or a virus
is
operating. The name of the program did not display in the Task Manager
either.

If anyone is interested in seeing the program it is available as a free
download from www.medmaster.net. The program name is MedSearcher. It
is the
first Revolution program that I have published. It's designed to allow
users

to quickly search any of the major medical search engines.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to enable the name of the .exe
file

to show up in the program bar? Thanks.

Re: strange message watcher window

2005-08-21 Thread Pat Trendler

Jon,
Just resize the width (drag) of the window. I think from memory it stays
put once you've done that.

Not sure if this still happens in the latest build (108).

You can also lose buttons on the script error window if it isn't wide
enough - fooled me at first.

I'd not used the Message Watcher until this morning. I was a bit
surprised to see the Clear button on top of what seemed to be a data entry
field, and the data entry field lying on top of the Suppress button. Am I
being too picky, or misunderstanding the UI?

I've used this myself a couple of times.

on mouseUp
 answer file Standalone
if it is cancel then exit to top
 put url (binfile:it) into tStack
 repeat forever
-- there's more than one stackfile in there which isinteresting ;-)
put offset(#!/bin/sh,char 10 to -1 of tStack) into tOff
if tOff = 0 then exit repeat
put char tOff+9 to -1 of tStack into tStack
 end repeat
 ask file Stack
if it is cancel then exit to top
 set the fileType to RevoRSTK
 put tStack into url (binfile:it)
 answer conversion finished with OK
end mouseUp

When finished rename the stack with a rev extension.

Among the lost files is also the RR source of a program I've created. The
only thing I have is the windows exe file.

Is there a way to decompile this back to a working RR project (or even

Sorry, forgot to tell you how to get a copy of the image, which is what you

on mouseUp
export image scottRed7.png to file ball7.png as PNG

This will save the image into the same folder as the stack. You can give a

Hi Pat,

Thanks for your kind attempt to help.

No, those are not the circumstances. That's why it seemed inexplicable.
The circumstances you describe would make sense to me.

I might have found the source of the problem, though.

There was a handler in this bg left over from Hypercard:

On closefield
  put me into me
  pass closeField
end closefield

This might seem insane, but it worked great in HC. The purpose? I often
paste text from other sources into fields in this bg. I want the pasted
text to lose its original attributes and take on those assigned to text in
the field I am pasting into.

I have a hunch Rev choked on this one. Maybe because the script editor is
another stack. I suppose the script editor is in the hierarchy when I'm
editing a script. Or something...

I commented out this handler, and a couple of other suspicious ones, but
this is the prime candidate. No problems since then. I'm keeping my
fingers crossed.

Any thoughts?

Best regards,

Tim

BTW -- Is it okay to top post on this list? Or does anyone care? I just
want to follow the rules.

Tim,

The only time I have seen this msg is if the stack has been closed and
removed from memory, but the script editor for the object is still open
and I have tried to make changes.

Is that when the msg occurs for you, or does it happen under different
circumstances?

I ran into a similar problem trying to save and recall a file for the
program I am writing. The thing is I want my standalone to be able to
open a saved file and along with data it should restore the values of
all the global variables. So the way I though of is to store the
globalnames together with their values in the save file. And to open
a file and restore the values of global vars I use the 'do' form as
expressed by Dennis. In such a case the method used by Pat would not
work (of course it can be used for other purposes).

The documentation says that 'do' is quite slow as it compiles in real
time. Its not too slow for me but I'm not loading a terribly big
file.

I am updating my Error Reporting script to include all variable information
(Local, Global, etc) and I am wondering how I would get the contents of a
variable who's name is held within a variable?

Just analyze the script below and you'll see what I mean...

  -- Globals
put crcr Global Variables... cr after theMessage
  put globalNames() into varNames
repeat with x=1 to the number of items in varNames
putline x of varNames after theMessage
put variableContents(line x of varNames) cr after theMessage
  end repeat

changing value of arrays in debugger

2005-06-08 Thread Pat Trendler
You can't change the value of array elements [or at least, I couldn't find a
way] in the variable watcher like you can with variables.

You can, however, change the value using the msg box. A bit tedious though,
as you have to type the full line instead of just the value.

And if you look at my previous post seeing arrays in the variable watcher.
Yes, you can see them.

I should have mentioned that when you change the value via the message box,
you have to click on the array name in the variable watcher again to see the

Subject: Bouncy Updated for 2.6

I've updated the Bouncy stack with the Revolution graphic for 2.6. It now
happily bounces around the screen with a deep mask. The engine handles it
very nicely (disclaimer: handles it nicely on my 1ghz PowerBook. Please
let me know how it behaves on older hardware).

Use this command in the message box in 2.6 to see it:

go url http://www.inspiredlogic.com/rev/bouncy2.rev;

Make sure you select the browse tool, and then fling it!

For those who don't remember, bouncy is a windowshaped stack that can be
tossed around the screen. It bounces off the bottom and sides, and makes
a noise when it does. There is gravity and a slight friction, so
eventually it will slow and stop. The top of the screen is left open.
With practice you can fling the window so high it will take many seconds
to reappear on screen.

I wrote the first iteration of bouncy while waiting for a plane. I didn't
expect it to run too well, but it surprised me. Now it has surprised me
again. Even with a deep mask on a roughly 200x700 pixel stack, it not
only works smoothly, it works smoothly with twenty of those stacks going
nuts on screen

Features include (not all tested under 2.6, let me know if you hit
issues):

-- Grab and throw in any direction.
-- Drag and drop wherever you like.
-- Shift-drag to slingshot. Some people find it hard to throw bouncy.
The answer is to hold down the shift key, click and drag bouncy. When you
let go bouncy will slingshot quickly toward where you started dragging
from.
-- Option-click bouncy to create a clone of the stack. There is no limit
to the number of copies you can create. As you create more and more they
will eventually get jumpier as you throw them all, but twenty copies of
bouncy all going at once works fine on my computer.
-- Command-click to paint bouncy at random. Works better for changing a
solid color to another solid color (it uses the paint bucket tool) so not
so applicable any more.
-- Drag an image file onto bouncy to set the image and shape. Accepts
.png and .gif
-- Drag a sound file onto bouncy to set the sound bouncy makes when it
hits the wall. Accepts .wav and .aiff
-- Hold down the Escape key to stop all copies of bouncy and position
them on screen. NEW -- staggers them when it repositions them. They used
to all pile at the same location.
-- Command-C to copy bouncy's script. This is more for when bouncy is
distributed as an application.

Bouncy is a little under two hundred lines of code, reasonably clear and
commented. I'd show it to my mother, anyway. ;-)

If anyone wants bouncy as an app, let me know.

Geoff Canyon

Re: Background behavior

2005-06-01 Thread Pat Trendler

Use place background. (see place in dictionary)

Make the group on the first card you want it to appear.
Set its background behaviour to true.
Then something like:

 repeat with x = 2 to 5
   go to card x
place background mygroup onto this card
 end repeat

Any new card made directly after card 5 (in this example) will also have the
new group.

Dear all,

I needed a way to organise keywords I use to organize my bookmarks. It
didn't take me more than an afternoon (very long afternoon) to come up
with:

go stack url

http://revolution.lexicall.org/stacks/education/presentation_tools/tree_structure.rev;

The complexity is in the organization (using principles discovered in
books about relational databases like mysql), the coding was suprisingly
easy. Gee, I wouldn't even have thought of starting to code this with any
other language. On the education list, Judy mentioned some were
predicting

a chip to directly connect to your brain in 2014. Well, I teach in
cognitive neurosciences, that may have to wait longer (I mean, a chip
that

understand your thoughts). Still, revolution is the closest I know from
this chip... once you have identified the solution to your problem in
your

mind it's only a matter of hours (rather than days or weeks) to have that
solution implemented as a computer program.

If you notice any problem, feel free to fix it (I am not a professional,
I

develop tools useful to me; I cannot really afford the time it would take
to make it 100% reliable for users other than myself).

Feel free to use it for the design of an outliner tool or whatever else
you facny. (The stack is distributed as share alike).

Subject: Problems with ShutDownRequest

One of my apps is not processing ShutDownRequest properly, but it's
very complex, so I decided to build a simple test stack. I'm seeing
the same thing with it. All my testing is done after building a
standalone from the stack.

I start out with a main stack. The main stack has this handler:

on ShutDownRequest
answer Really, Really Quit? with No or Quit
if it is Quit then pass ShutDownRequest
end ShutDownRequest

If I run the main stack and choose Quit, I get the answer dialog and
everything works as expected.

Now, I've put a button on the main stack that creates a new stack and
places this handler in its stack script:

on ShutDownRequest
send ShutDownRequest to stack Quit Test -- my main stack
end ShutDownRequest

If I click this button, thus creating the new stack, and then choose
Quit, I again get the answer dialog and everything works fine. If that
stack is frontmost, it sends the ShutDownRequest to my other stack
which puts up the dialog.

Here's the problem. If I close the second stack (the one created by
the button) and then create a another one (by clicking the button
again), THIS TIME, if I select Quit, the standalone quits, closing
both stacks without giving me the answer dialog.

For some reason, creating a stack, closing it, and creating a new one
causes the Rev engine to bypass the ShutDownRequest handlers
completely.

Why?

If I can't trap shutDownRequest, my clients will lose all their data
if they choose Quit without saving their document.

What am I missing?

Just another thought, you can use - if the mouse is down
for example as in the following (a bit sloppy scripting but it does work OK)
on mouseMove
if the mouse is down then
   repeat with i = 1 to 4
if the mouseLoc is within the rect of btn i then
set the backgroundcolor of btn i to blue
 end if
   end repeat
 end if
end mouseMove
Correction to my previous mail I should have said you can get mouseStillDown
if the handler is in the script of the target btn.

I have an app that needs to save some data before the app quits.
When the users quits from the menu (or shortcut), it's easy - but I
can't seem to find out if they quit by clicking the 'close' (X) box in
the window decorations. I read about shutdown and shutdownrequest
messages in the docs - so I added handlers for those to the stack's
script - but they don't seem to be invoked.

The stack script now looks like
on shutdown
 answer shutdown
end shutdown
on shutdownrequest
 answer shutdownrequest
end shutdownrequest
When I quit via the menu (which uses the quit command), it calls the
shutdownrequest handler - but not when I click on the close (X) icon.

Am I missing something obvious here ?

No: Control-clicking (or right-clicking) an unlocked field sends
mouseDown, mouseUp, etc. instead of opening the field for editing. This
is built-in behavior of fields. (There's a note in the docs for mouseDown

Surprise surprise... when you select the text in an unlocked field and
drag it to another unlocked field, you move the text to this new field.
When control-clicking and dragging you put a copy of the text into the new

selecting text and control left click drags amd copies the text.
With just grab me in the mouseup (if thebutton is 3 not needed) and on/end

right click moves only the field.

See Jeanne's email and the docs for mousedown in an unlocked field (right
click for Win, control click Mac)
It probably seemed to work for you because you were using the pointer
tool
in the IDE.

Pat
...

So, if you only want to let the user move the field, but not move or copy
the text, would you use
on dragStart
end dragStart
on mousedown thebutton
if thebutton is 3 then grab me
end mousedown
This works, but just wondered if this was the right way.
Pat

Surprise surprise... when you select the text in an unlocked field and
drag it to another unlocked field, you move the text to this new field.
When control-clicking and dragging you put a copy of the text into the
new
field. (This is on Windows.) There are always new things to learn!

What about read-only properties?
Anyboty have any suggestions on how to figure out what messages a

Re: [noob again]locking background objects

2005-03-26 Thread Pat Trendler
I think this is what you want.
selectGroupedControls property (global)
Platform support:
Introduced in version 1.0
Specifies whether clicking an object in a group selects the object or the
entire group.

set the selectGroupedControls to {true | false}
set the selectGroupedControls to (not the selectGroupedControls)
See also: select command, selectedObject function, selection keyword,
selectionMode property

Description
Use the selectGroupedControls property to control what happens when you
click a grouped control.

Comments:
If the selectGroupedControls property is set to false, clicking an object in
a group with the Pointer tool selects the entire group. You must set the
editBackground property to true to in order select, move, resize, and change
individual objects in the group.

If the selectGroupedControls is true, clicking an object in a group selects
only that object, even if the editBackground is false.

You can change the selectGroupedControls property by choosing Edit menu
Select Grouped Controls.

So, about 6,000 to 6,500 users of RB are VB transferees; good for them.
One less Microsoft program for them to deal with.

Does anyone find this information useful?
From a marketing perspective, the answer is a strong yes. That was the
point of my original post. I did not specify I admit. Being a fan of
Rev, I always notice their competition when mentioned around the net or in
printed materials. Without deep knowledge of the inner workings of Rev
the company, one can only guess.

A much more interesting question: how many Rev users are transferees
from other Xtalk languages, such as HyperCard and SuperCard?

Add to this: how many have gone from Xtalks to RB, from Xtalks to VB,
from VB to Xtalks, etc.

Putting these various pieces of info together may prove rather
interesting. Would anyone know how to use it for something constructive?
Marketing, perhaps, but otherwise, hmm...
Assuming Rev is probably the leading xtalk, focusing on other xtalks would
provide less useful marketing information. Not sure how it stacks up to
ToolBook in user count though. The whole point is to look at your
competitors that are creating waves and see how they are doing it. Not
knowing how many users there are using Rev makes it difficult to know what
is important to Rev. Not knowing the demographics of their user base also
puts us at a disadvantage as well.

6K - 6.5K of VB transferees would be an important number to Rev. I wonder
how many of those users would have switched to Rev instead of RB had a
translator like that been created for Rev. Is this feature important to
me? Nope. I am just curious.

If you are creating a product for sale, do you know what your competition
is offering? If you do not know their product well enough to teach it to
someone else, you are truly missing out marketing and development wise. I
have a vertical market commercial app that has about 10 competitors. That
is a large number in an ever shrinking global market. We were probably
the fifth one to market. With proper analyzation of every competitor we
had, we were able to position ourselves to be the leader.

It all starts with something as small as my very first comment in the
original post. There may be no real point to this thread. I just find it
interesting and useful to analyze my competition. Maybe someone else will
find it interesting and useful too.

Mikey,
From the docs (search Topics)
How do I find out where the insertion point is?
You use the selectedChunk function to find out the location of the insertion
point.

When there is an insertion point but no text is selected, the selectedChunk
function returns an expression of the form char nextChar to prevChar of
field fieldNumber. For example, if the insertion point is in field 3,
between character 10 and character 11, the selectedChunk function returns
char 11 to 10 of field 3.

Re: Search Rev docs at the speed of thought Bad Language alert!

2005-03-20 Thread Pat Trendler
Just looked at your new screenshot - absolutely bleeding fabulous!
All manual style ebooks should have a search function like this.
It just gets better and better.
Could we be able to select and copy please?
Pat
And the new version - available during the next days - can be placed
either into the main Revolution or Metacard folder (where the engine is)
or into the plugins folder of Rev or the MC IDE; SearchDocs XML 2
will detect where it has been placed and set the directory paths for the
search accordingly.-

Another change is a simplified search input and the extra option to
search all of the XML files of the Dictionary, Faq, and Topics in
one run. Searching these combined 1992 files will slightly increase the
average search time to about 160 milliseconds (WindowsXP, 2 GHz), which
should be still very much tolerable.

There is a new screenshot at

Re: field information bails out on card 2

2005-03-18 Thread Pat Trendler
Paul,
You could make tData a global variable instead of a local variable
global gData
on openCard
put item 5 of line 1 of gData into field L1
-- whatever else
end openCard
You will also need to declare the global in the script where you put the
data into it.

If you are going to put from a fld on one card to a fld on another card:
put fld L1 of cd 1 into fld L1
Does into replace the current data and after adds data?
Yes, that's right.
If fld L1 is on a lot of cards, is part of a group with background
behaviour (in the group's property inspector) set to true (you can have just
one control in a group) and you want to display exactly the same data in the
fld on each card, you can check share text on the flds property
inspector. Then whatever is put into one fld shows in all of them.(see
sharedText property in the Dictionary)

2. turn on the backdrop
3. quit
4. relaunch
5. notice the backdrop hides RevOnline
Any confirmations? If so, I¹ll BZ it.

You just need to reverse the last two lines, set the label first and then
the menuHistory as below:

create btn a
set the style of btn a to menu
set the menumode of btn a to option
set the showName of button a to true
put one return two return three into btn a
set the label of btn a to two
set the menuHistory of btn a to 2

Yes, that works, but I don't want to change the name. If you manually

Jaqueline,
The above is always empty. If you use:
put the short name of the selectedField into activeField

as Jason did, you can store the selectedField.
Of course, the rest of your recommendations are a far better way of coding.

Hello Jason,
Could you just make the purple area a button. Turn off
showName,autoHilite,sharedHilite, showFocusBorder. And turn off
traversalOn - so that it doesn't take focus off the field if it is clicked..

You can use property inspector (size position/layer) to 'send to the back'
alter you create the button.

Subject: mouseDown/Up - no actions when not on buttons

Hello (again) :) After some very useful advice from Jacqueline Landman
Gay at Hyperactive, I've changed the structure of my mobile phone sim
tool. Now, instead of the buttons being on a palette, they're grouped
and behave like a background, showing up on every card. When buttons
are pressed, they send a custom ButtonPress message with the name of the
button being pressed to the card. The card then has a switch statement,
and does some action based on which button was pressed.
The current card I'm working on is a Login type screen, with two
focusable/editable fields, User ID and Password. (Please see my shared
stack in RevOnline's User Spaces; the username is jsilver). In the
switch statements, I have this script when the user presses up (or
down):
case navUp
-- Determine which text field the user is currently in
put the short name of the selectedField into activeField
if activeField = User ID then
   focus on field Password
else -- The user must be in the password field
   focus on field User ID
 end if
 break
This works all well and good, except when pressing on an area that's not
a button (in my stack, the purpleish area). The cursor then disappears
from either the User ID or Password fields, and then when pressing Up or
Down, the following error occurs (because the focus is not in a field):
Type: Chunk: no target found
Object: Login Screen
Line: put the short name of the selectedField into activeField
Basically, I never want the focus to leave either the User ID or
Password fields; this simulation is supposed to be controlled solely by
the buttons placed in the Buttons group. Is there an easy way to
block the mouseUp (or mouseDown?) handler from doing anything when not
on those buttons? I've tried adding exit mouseDown type handlers in
the card and stack, but this doesn't do anything. Any help is
appreciated.
Thanks again!

Dwayne,
Also you need to clear out the tHobbies and tPets variables, or the items
will get added to with every repeat.

i.e. after the set itemDel to TAB line you could put
put into tHobbies
put into tPets

Subject: [OT] Win convention question

On a Mac, you customarily install an app by dragging the app or a folder
from a DMG to your drive. Uninstalling means simply dragging it to the
trach, and any preferences files are left behind.

On Windows I use Wise Install to copy the app into its own folder in
/Program Files/, and when the app is run it puts its prefs data in a
folder within the user's Documents and Settings folder.

Historically I've treated everything in the Documents and Settings folder
as belonging to the user, and do not bother with uninstalling. Moreover,
on multi-user systems I may not know where to find all of the user
Documents and Settings folders for everyone who may have run the app.

So what is the normal convention for uninstall on Win XP?
Should I:
a) leave prefs in the user's Documents and Settings files
as is common with files in the Mac's Preferences folder?
b) Delete only the prefs data in the current user's Documents
   and Settings folder?
c) Attempt to delete prefs from the Documents and Settings
folders for all users on the computer?
Extra bonus points for Win HIG verse and chapter; I couldn't find the
section on how to handle such things.

Version 2 of the basic database primer series is now on revonline. It is
in general categories.

Now I know it is for newbies, however, could some of the rev gurus please
have a look at the search-List popup and the way is modifies the list.
Once the list is filtered with this popup it wont allow double clicking of
the listfield entry to go to the corresponding card.

If I get this sorted I can get on with the rest of the demo app.

Hi All.
My wee database tutorial work is stuck again. (no great shakes there) :-).
I have button that sticks the text fo a field item into a list ItemList.
The script is this and works perfectly...
on mouseup
repeat with n = 1 to the number of cds in this stack
put fld Item of cd n return after theList
  end repeat
delete last char of theList -- clear trailing return
  put theList into fld ItemList
end mouseup
Now that i have my list I can sort it using
on mouseUp
sort lines of field ItemList by word 1 of each
end mouseUp
This works perfectly...
Now what I want to do is to double click on a list entry and go to the
card that produced this entry.

I can't see how this si done. Searched the docs and the list archive
without any clear answer.

Lots of clues though... linktext etc
Any Ideas folks.

Incidentally, I filed this in Bugzilla as bug 2057 before 2.5 shipped.
They said there that in the release it would contain the correct
codecs. Apparently this wasn't true in your case. Has anyone else
had this problem? If so, I should probably reopen that Bugzilla case
so that Runtime will get the correct codec in there.

Re: use-revolution Digest, Vol 11, Issue 92 SAPI SDK 4

2004-08-25 Thread Pat Trendler
Barry,

http://www.microsoft.com/speech/download/old/sdk40a.asp

You need to download the SAPI SDK 4 Suite.exe 40 MB (not the other
downloads listed there they don't contain the speech engine)

Fair enough but where, pray tell, is one to find version 4.x? A search
at
 ms.com revealed nothing.

 Thanks,

I think there is something about it in the readme...

It's in the what's new actually

Issue: On Windows systems, the Speech library is not yet compatible
with
  version
  5.x of Microsoft's speech software.
  Workaround: Use version 4.x instead.

Desperately seeking help. iconify. uniconify. close from task bar. answer. ms reportable error?

2004-07-31 Thread Pat Trendler
Rev 2.1.2 win32

I've had a lot of problems with iconify, managed to solve them all except
this one. Spent nearly two very valuable days trying to get round this. I
need to make sure a user gets a chance to save a substack (saved as a
separate file) if they minimize and then close the stack from the taskbar.

This happens with an empty stack and with just this in the stack script.

on iconifystack
answer whatever with OK
end iconifystack

doesn't matter where the script goes - closestackrequest, uniconify.
Without answer and I just save and do some other things there's no problem -
but there is if the user didn't want to save the changes they've made.

This is for a cdrom which my client (my first paid job) has made a deal with
a magazine she writes for to review this cdrom, so there's a deadline.
Tomorrow.

Basically the only way I can solve this problem seems to be to take minimize
off the decorations - and that is not going to look good either.

Maybe someone has some ideas.

Greatly appreciated if you can help here.

2004-07-31 Thread Pat Trendler
This doesn't happen in 2.5 but that doesn't help me much.
Also I've noticed how minimizing stacks released memory, and what's
interesting is that it never goes up as much as when the standalone is first
opened. Varies between a half to sometimes a quarter of the original memory
usage. If iconic wasn't such a bitch I might think of
iconicing/uniconicising at startup - it really cuts down on memory usage (
or maybe its just my bad code)

Re: Desperately seeking help. iconify. uniconify. close from task bar. answer. ms reportable error?

2004-07-31 Thread Pat Trendler
Thanks Trevor,

Yes you understand right. It is when the user right clicks on the task bar
and chooses close. Otherwise, shutdownrequest etc. work OK if the user
maximises first. It's only if the user does it from the taskbar.

The same thing happens if I try to trap at the shutdownrequest if the stack
is minimized. As soon as it hit the answer box I get the error.

This happens with an empty stack also(2.1.2)

 Pat,

I'm not sure I understand the problem exactly. From what I understand
you want to ask the user whether they want to save changes before the
app quits but it isn't working when the stack has been iconified? Are
you not able to trap the the shutdownRequest message and ask the user?
If I'm not understanding this correctly could you provide some more
 details?

Re: Desperately seeking help. iconify. uniconify. close from task bar. answer. ms reportable error?

2004-07-31 Thread Pat Trendler
Trevor,

The error is

winxp the Microsoft ..has encountered an problem and need to close. We are
sorry for the incovenience...etc. Please tell microsoft about this problem
etc

win98 95 This program has peformed an illegal operation and will be shut
down

The shutdownrequest, closestackrequest etc. all get received OK and the
handler runs until it reaches the answer box.
In any case this problem occurs even if you make an empty stack, with a
handler that just has the answer box, to deal with the close from the
taskbar.

I have tried setting the iconic to true, but of course the answer box is
still in the same handler.

I could probably just set the iconic to true which would force the user to
close the stack from the menu or the close box. They might think it is a bit
strange when they close from the taskbar and then the stack opens up. But
there doesn't seem to be any other way out.

This is obviously some kind of weird bug that nobody has noticed before. As
far as I can tell it doesn't happen in 2.5 (I don't know about 2.2)

Pat

What is the error exactly? That the shutdownrequest message is not
received? If that is the case might want to check the
 closeStackRequest message as well.

If the shutdownRequest message is being received then you could try
setting the iconic property of the stack to true before asking the
user to save. That should maximize the stack again.

I use Monte Goulding's installer too. And can vouch that it's safe, simple
and fast. Wouldn't be without it.

I use Monte Goulding's installers which work for both Mac and Windows
alike. It's great, 'cause all you do is drag/drop your folder full of
stuff onto it and it figures out what to do (based on the contents of
the folder...ie. if your folder has a 'license.txt' file, then it puts
 it in the installer.)

You can check out an animated preview of it at:
