[libreoffice-users] Issue 3959 from OOo now possible in LibreOffice?

2011-12-15 Thread lllact...@gmx.net

Hi all,

I just joined the list. How does the LO community stand in regard to
issues that were filed under OOo? Are these OOo issues uninteresting or
unwanted in principle, or are there plans to mine this area for ideas to
the development of LO?

The issue is listed now at:
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=3959

Can this become an issue in LO now, or should it remain with OOo. I'd
really like this feature in LO. It is the only reason I still use
MS-Office Word, because real Outlining can not be done by OOo and LO.
It is a show stopper for advanced technical writers to convert to OOo
or LO.

Dreiel.

Assuming Ubuntu is not automatically doing this for you, you need to

Re: [libreoffice-users] Issue 3959 from OOo now possible in LibreOffice?

2011-12-15 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)

LibO is working on OOo issues but the LibO code has moved on quite a bit
already so a lot of issues have been cleared up or are no longer relevant.

It might be worth posting a new bug-report specifically against LibreOffice so
that people know it is still an issue
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport

The standard answer when people ask this type of question seems to be
to try using Navigator and that usually seems to surprise and please
people but I noted the comment from the OOo bug-report that

Navigator view is similar, but not the same. The difference is that the MS
Word Outline view is done in the document window and contains the full text of
the document, not just the headings. It also contains all of the font settings
and fields. Printing while in Outline view generates an outline style printout.

Navigator view is similar to the MS Word Map Window, which shows the headings
indented by level.

Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] Re: Can't see text in cell

2011-12-15 Thread Tom
Hi :)
Are you able to get 11.04 to revert to the Classic Interface / Desktop
Environment? When the login box appears after you restart the machine look
at the bottom taskbar/panel. Somewhere there it should have a drop-down
(well, drop-up i guess) or button or something that mentions interface,
gui, desktop environment (DE) or session type or something. It's
worth having a look at the other options on the taskbar/panel too.
Hopefully it should let you switch back to the Gnome DE which it calls the
Classic interface.

If you want to revert to a previous version of Ubuntu i have a neat trick
that avoids losing data or settings. I keep meaning to write it up
somewhere. Do you want the trick?

[libreoffice-users] Printing Multiple Copies Problem

2011-12-15 Thread Don C. Myers

Hi Everyone,

I'm running LibreOffice (version directly from LibreOffice) 3.4.4 on
Ubuntu 11.10. I tried printing 75 copies of a single sheet with
significant graphics (large file size) on a black and white
Konica-Minolta PagePro 1400w laser printer. I had no idea that
LibreOffice would be sending 75 individual print jobs to the printer
instead of 1 print job with 75 copies. It crashed the printer, and also
the driver after several copies. Then there was the horrendous mess of
getting all of the unprinted jobs deleted. I was able to use my inkjet
(HP OfficeJet Pro 8000) to finish the printing after the laser crashed.
Once again individual print jobs were sent for each copy, but the
printer did not crash. Once everything was printed, I had about 10
minutes of icons coming on the screen saying printing started and
printing completed when the printing was all done. The icons were
playing catchup with all of the print jobs. I've tried to research this.
The only way I've found that you can print a large number of copies is
to export the page to pdf, and then print the pdf. Programs other than
LibreOffice (GEdit, Document Viewer) send 1 job to the printer with
multiple copies. This problem did not exist in OpenOffice a year ago
with whatever was the current version of openoffice on Ubuntu 10.10 back
then when I printed the same job on the same laser printer.

Has anyone else had similar problems, or does anyone have any other
solutions? I filed a bug report in bug 33696 on Freedesktop.org. It may
not have been the best place for it since that was a bug report for a
3.3x version and for Windows.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice Portable

2011-12-15 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
False positives and the need to switch off security on a regular basis in order
to do fairly routine tasks is such a normal part of the Windows world.

According to most antivirus companies around 20% of Windows machines are
infected with some sort of malware.  Apparently MS were quite proud when their
new antivirus program found it was more like 80% (of machines that people were
worried about).  All of which fails to recognise that Windows could be classed
as a trojan in it's own right.  Anti-virus programs try to get ahead of the
curve by worrying about programs that could be executables and therefore have
at least a 20% chance of being malware.  Anything that is going to mess with
the registry is also a worry for an antivirus program.  To flag or not to
flag.  Each security program has to decide just how likely it is that the users
actually wants to install programs other than itself and then balance that
against the likelihood that the users is being fooled into doing something they
might not have thought about.  After all, anyone that installs/has Windows and
then worries about security is
at least 20% likely to have an infected machine already.  If in doubt, blame
the user for following instructions!  There must be an alternative to the
paranoia of the Windows world but would people use it?  I keep getting sucked
back into dealing with Windows (mostly to fix colleagues problems admittedly)
and i'm guessing most people do, even here.

Regards from
Tom :)

Absolute references won't work because they are updated as you insert rows.

One solution is to use INDIRECT to always point at the same cells.

Hi :)
I think there is a deliberate mistake or tpyo or something?  It is Christmas
for a lot of us so if the chances for error are not higher than normal then
you're not doing it (Xmas) properly.  Go out and get stressed in some large
group of people doing something crazy lol.

So, document was changed to green borders at 2pt and then saved and when
re-opened it had green 2pt borders?

Has anyone seen Tru Blood where Jessica's problem is that the dead body she
wants to hide has gone missing?

Hi Everyone,

I'm running LibreOffice (version directly from LibreOffice) 3.4.4 on Ubuntu
11.10. I tried printing 75 copies of a single sheet with significant graphics
(large file size) on a black and white Konica-Minolta PagePro 1400w laser
printer. I had no idea that LibreOffice would be sending 75 individual print
jobs to the printer instead of 1 print job with 75 copies. It crashed the
printer, and also the driver after several copies. Then there was the
horrendous mess of getting all of the unprinted jobs deleted.  I was able to
use my inkjet (HP OfficeJet Pro 8000) to finish the printing after the laser
crashed. Once again individual print jobs were sent for each copy, but the
printer did not crash. Once everything was printed, I had about 10 minutes of
icons coming on the screen saying printing started and printing completed when
the printing was all done. The icons were playing catchup with all of the print
jobs. I've tried to research this. The only way I've
found that you can print a large number of copies is to export the page to
pdf, and then print the pdf. Programs other than LibreOffice (GEdit, Document
Viewer) send 1 job to the printer with multiple copies. This problem did not
exist in OpenOffice a year ago with whatever was the current version of
openoffice on Ubuntu 10.10 back then when I printed the same job on the same
laser printer.

Has anyone else had similar problems, or does anyone have any other solutions?
I filed a bug report in bug 33696 on Freedesktop.org. It may not have been the
best place for it since that was a bug report for a 3.3x version and for
Windows.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Printing Multiple Copies Problem

2011-12-15 Thread webmaster for Kracked Press Productions

There has to be a way to do the multiple copies in one print job.

I printed a page using CUPS-PDF, but Export to PDF will do.

Then I went to print it out to an HP color laser printer. There was a
number of copies option show. I wonder it that will make 5 or 10
jobs, just printing the same job 5 or 10 times?

Do you have that option for your printers?

 and

 LibreOffice 3.4.4

What worked for you and what did it accomplish?

The above instructions, changed the border sizes to 1 pt.

Select the entire sheet (clicking upper left corner), open styles

Width: 1.00pt|Line arrangement: second outline box under 'Default'.
Note: even changed the pt to 2pt and color to green, saved the file,
closed the file, reopened the file the cell boarders are still 2pt/green.

No doubt it works perfectly in the simplistic example you're referring
to. In my case not all of the cells have borders on them and by
selecting an entire sheet and applying formatting so that each cell has
a border will not accomplish what I'm trying to do.

Make up your mind:

Now
with LibreOffice all of the cell borders on the sheet are .25 pt. A
change was made to the cell border sizes and I didn't do it.

How do I quickly change ALL of the cell borders in the many sheets I'm
working on?
/quote

Though not related
my sheets don't have an option of apply Default Formatting. All I have
is Clear Direct Formatting when I do a right click in any cell.

3.3.4 has that option. For 3.4.4: ensure that the Text toolbar is
showing (View|Toolbars|Text Formatting. Click the down arrow bar at the
end of the toolbar and select Visble Buttons|Apply Style. That will add
the style selection box on the toolbar. From there you can select Default.
... snip unnecessary pgp sig.

Also; when i go to options - java; it takes like 8-10 seconds before
the java screen responds ... and then it lists both versions of java
1.6u29 ... (i've got 1.6 1.7 installed, both x86 and x64).
I have the 32 bit version selected though, as i know that LibO is a

I think i'll just install OO.O 's base to open my ODB files for the time

Hi Cor,

I should have thought of that !

I created a new document and the Mail Merge worked using the existing

The crash happened when I added a header, and added an image into the

Can you reproduce the issue with another document too? And also with

Absolute references won't work because they are updated as you insert rows.

One solution is to use INDIRECT to always point at the same cells.

Probably there are more elegant ways of doing this :)

A very good option is use an array.

In Sheet2.a1 =Sheet1.a1:a15 and use Mays+Crtl+Enter to get an array.

If you insert a row in for example Sheet1.a8 then the array in Sheet2 is
expanded to retain the same size, even better if you have formulae in
the array rows in Sheet2, they are also copied in the new row.

To edit an array you must select the array not a cell in the array, use
Ctrl+/ for this.

I have the 32 bit version selected though, as i know that LibO is a

I think i'll just install OO.O 's base to open my ODB files for the time

I've never claimed it was immune, but it's much more difficult for a
variety of reasons. Windows, while now improved considerably, was
essentially a security sieve. One significant cause was due to Micros~1
tying IE to the base operating system, to back up their claims in court
that it couldn't be removed. This meant that a problem for IE became a
problem for the OS. Also, Windows users have often had to run with
admin rights, in order to use their computers. This gives malware full
run of the system. On the other hand, Linux users rarely do, so any
damage will be confined. There are several other reasons.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Printing Multiple Copies Problem

I have been using HP lasers since laser II days. The options can be
different between my Ubuntu drivers and Windows version, but HP usually
has some good options that are kept from the earlier versions. That job
copy option is one, if I remember right.

I just wish that the color printed for the HP Color Laser for Linux was
as good as the original Windows version. Right now the free drivers for
Linux/Ubuntu do not do a good job at colors for the photos.

It crashed the printer, and
also the driver after several copies. Then there was the horrendous
mess of getting all of the unprinted jobs deleted. I was able to
use my inkjet (HP OfficeJet Pro 8000) to finish the printing after
the laser crashed. Once again individual print jobs were sent for
each copy, but the printer did not crash. Once everything was
printed, I had about 10 minutes of icons coming on the screen saying
printing started and printing completed when the printing was all
done. The icons were playing catchup with all of the print jobs.
I've tried to research this. The only way I've
found that you can print a large number of copies is to export the
page to pdf, and then print the pdf. Programs other than LibreOffice
(GEdit, Document Viewer) send 1 job to the printer with multiple
copies. This problem did not exist in OpenOffice a year ago with
whatever was the current version of openoffice on Ubuntu 10.10 back
then when I printed the same job on the same laser printer.

Has anyone else had similar problems, or does anyone have any other
solutions? I filed a bug report in bug 33696 on Freedesktop.org. It
may not have been the best place for it since that was a bug report
for a 3.3x version and for Windows.

Reinstalling a previous version of Ubuntu fam (or just a very different ver) Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Can't see text in cell

2011-12-15 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)

Ok, sorry for the looong post!  Really it's just the last paragraph that is
important.  The rest assumes you don't know how to get there.

First, find out which partitions do what.  Hopefully you already know
this or can guess from looking at GPartEd on a LiveCd/Usb (or whatever) of
Ubuntu 10.04.  From the top taskbar that is

System - Administration - Gparted

{ Incidentally it might be just me but i find that when i boot up a Cd/Usb of
10.04 or 10.10 and try the Try it option to get to the LiveCd session it just
hangs.  While hung i can access the release notes and that opens a web-browser
so i can do most sundry office things right there, ie before getting into the
OS.  To get a proper LiveCd/Usb session i have to choose the Install now and
then use the back button until i get to the Try it screen again.  Then the
Try it option works just fine with no problems.  With 8.10, 9.04 and 9.10
they all seemed to work right first time.  }

Anyhow, start a normal install but when you get to the Partitioning or
Allocate Drive Space section (it's about  choose the bottom option.  It's
something like Advanced or Manual or Something else.  The top options are
something like Wipe whole drive and Install alongside existing OSes.  I
think the default is to install alongside.

The Advanced or Manual option rescans the hard-drive so there is a scary
pause and scarier activity from the drive.  Then there is a fairly primitive
gui partition editor that should show the same info as Gparted.  Edit or
Change the appropriate partitions to do the same thing they were doing in the
11.04 and keep the same format.

If there are 4 partitions and you keep the Windows that was on the machine then
it's probably something like
sda1 = ntfs for Windows
sda2 = ext3 for /
sda3 = ext3 for /home
sda4 = linux-swap for swap

Note that an Extended partition is basically a bucket that allows the drive
to have more than 4 partitions.  hard-drives formatted to the Ms-dos spec can
only have 4 Primary partitions but 1 of those can be an Extended Partition
that can then contain a LOT of Logical Partitions which are typically
numbered from sda5 even if that skips a few numbers.  So you would get
something like
sda1 = ntfs for Windows, about half the drive

sda2 = Extended
sda4 = ext3 for /  perhaps around 4-8Gb. i tend to give 8Gb jic

sda5 = ext3 for /home

sda6 = linux-swap for swap, maybe about 4Gb?  Should be =Ram or = 2xRam.  Just
over Ram is about ideal size.

Obviously if swap is getting used a lot (ie in low ram machines or very busy
ones) it would be more sensible to place it first (or 2nd) but by default it's
often last.  On an Ide/Sata drive the read/write speed is faster near the
beginning of the drive but on SSDs it doesn't make any difference.

If there is no separate /home don't worry.  The /home folder will just be
inside the / partition and in that case the / partition is likely to be very
large.  The linux-swap partition is still likely to be last.

The CRUCIAL bit is to make sure that in the column Format? that all
partitions are UNticked as you don't want any of them to get formatted (well,
the swap will be automatically but that is ok).  It's the formatting that wipes
out datasettings.

Regards from
Tom :)

Yes. I have both 3.3.4 and 3.4.4 so I can test in parallel. 3.3.4 prints
properly (1 job, multiple pages) as long as the 'Collate' option is
checked in the print dialog. Unchecking 'Collate' and printing results
in multiple print jobs as expected. So as to not waste ink, just test by
printing to a cups-pdf printer.

In 3.4.4 it's as if the 'Collate' feature doesn't exist. 3.4.4 prints
multiple print jobs whether the 'Collate' option is checked or not.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Base can't open databases

2011-12-15 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
In

Tools - Options - Java

It should list all the versions of java that are installed on your system but
only 1 of them should be selected.  Are there radio buttons on the left-hand
side.  I think that just above the box is a tick-box so that you can choose not
to use java at all.  If you do something that needs java a pop-up error message
typically pops up to grumble about not being able to find java.

However if the database opens easily in OpenOffice and doesn't open well in
LibreOffice then using OpenOffice's Base makes a lot of sense.  It's difficult
to install and run OpenOffice alongside LibreOffice, or to run 2 versions of
LibreOffice alongside each other but this guide might help
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Installing_in_parallel

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

The version is incorrect ( I already asked someone to fix it)

The Windows files are already available for Beta1 (which is what I assume
the OP is using)

Some Linux files seem to be incorrect, though... (I'll post another warning)

 - With this Beta, you have to use the 'parallel installation' to
install it alongside the stable LibreOffice, and not replace it.
 - Unopkg.bin crashes during install (may prevent installation on
Windows7 and up).
 - Applications open a console window.
* OK so far. Unopkg.bin did crash during install, and the program
does

open an MS-DOS type window.
* I had LO 3.4.4 installed previously, and did not uninstall it prior to
installing 3.5.0 beta.
* Here's my problem. Let's say I open an existing .odt or .ods file

* A box appears: Error saving the document Internet address:

* If I click the button a second time, a new box appears: Error saving
the document Internet address: General Error. General input/output
error. (OK button shown).
* If I click the OK button, the box disappears, and the file
remains on

the screen.
* If I then choose Save as (Ctrl+Shift+S) rather than Save, and
choose

a different destination folder or a different file name, a box appears:
The file has been changed since it was opened for editing in
LibreOffice.
Saving your version of the document will overwrite changes made by
others.
Do you want to save anyway? (Save Anyway and Cancel boxes
shown).

* If I click Save Anyway, the revised file does indeed save in its new
location or new name.
* But this is obviously not convenient. I want to save the revised
file in

its original location and name, as per normal.
* Any suggestions for overcoming this?
* I realize that this is a Beta, and that a stable version will come
along

in due course to replace it, but still ...

Yes, I used the find replace with Gedit in Ubuntu. See my earlier
posts on this topic to see how I did it.

I edited only the .fods file and then saved it. Then, opened the .fods
file, check to make sure all borders were changed to the size wanted and
finally saved the .fods file as an .ods file.

Worked perfectly.

I've found it easier to simply edit an FODS file and alter the cell

Absolute references won't work because they are updated as you insert
rows.

One solution is to use INDIRECT to always point at the same cells.

A very good option is use an array.

In Sheet2.a1 =Sheet1.a1:a15 and use Mays+Crtl+Enter to get an array.
What is Mays?

If you insert a row in for example Sheet1.a8 then the array in Sheet2
is expanded to retain the same size, even better if you have formulae in
the array rows in Sheet2, they are also copied in the new row.

To edit an array you must select the array not a cell in the array, use
Ctrl+/ for this.

[libreoffice-users] [LibreOffice Writer: Feature requests]

2011-12-15 Thread Konstantinos Tzoannopoulos
Hello everyone. I've been using LibreOffice 3.4.3 for some time now, having
migrated from MS Office 2003, and there are two features that I'm missing:

1. The ability to have different text orientation between different cells
in a table (for instance, I'd like the top row of a table to have a
vertical, or even angled, orientation for the text inside the cells, with
horizontal text orientation in the rows underneath - or adjacent cells,
where one cell has vertical text orientation and the one next to it has
horizontal).

2. Smart formatting capability in numbered/bulleted lists: Let's say I'm
starting a bulleted or numbered list. I type the first word in bold or
italic or underlined (or any combination of the three), then I type the
colon (:) and then I revert to regular text. I would appreciate it if
Writer could recognize that this is the format I want for the rest of the
list and then automatically format the rest entries in the list.

There are also a few other things I'll report on later, but otherwise I
find that LibreOffice writer has great potential; I especially appreciate
the fact that I can hard-code (using commands) mathematical functions in it
- it's a lot faster to format and more powerful than Microsoft's equivalent.
