[libreoffice-users] increase testing to improve quality

2012-02-27 Thread e-letter
Readers,

For those people that consider high quality software to be of highest
priority, more important than new features, please help to perform
quality assurance manual software tests.

There is a web page which describes manual testing:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Testing/Manual_Tests. Clearly,
there are insufficient testers...

Please also subscribe to the quality assurance mailing list:
http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/libreoffice-qa.

There are many bugs that seem to occur after so-called upgrade.
People who make the effort to report bugs: please consider how
important each bug is. If it is of major importance, the ability to
remove the bug must become part of the quality assurance manual test,
i.e. the software version is not passed as good quality until that bug
is removed.

Testing for the success in solving the bug needs to be approved by
using 'litmus' (https://tcm.documentfoundation.org). So, the behaviour
that caused the bug needs to be recorded and entered into litmus.

This should prevent regression bugs and improve software quality in
the long-term.

Pardon? Which options in Writer? I only know the same methods in
Writer, Calc, Draw and Impress. Simply define your own templates and
styles.

At Tools | Options... | LibreOffice Writer | Basic Fonts (Western), you
can set default fonts for Writer. But there is no corresponding option
for document types other than text or HTML.

I trust this helps.

Thank you. I never noticed this very useful method for mass editing
styles. In Calc there is only one root style with a font property. In
English it is named Standard. Edit that one and you are done.

[libreoffice-users] Relationships in Base

2012-02-27 Thread gerbreown
I have just started using LO Base 3.4.4. I created 2 tables with a

another one with a relationship to the first. When I try to add records to

Error code: -177

Integrity constraint violation - no parent SYS_FK_110 table: Patient Old in
statement [INSERT INTO Pharm Rcpt (
pr_Cost,pr_Date,pr_Doctor,pr_Med,pr_Patient,pr_Pharm,pr_Qty)

It looks like the relationship did not get deleted when the table was

Would you please stop spreading this totally wrong information again and
again? Calc does not depend on Java by any means.
Unless the operating system is Linux there is no Java related
performance problem in any office component. There is a massive
performance problem if (and only if) when Base accesses a Java database
on Linux (Linux AND Base AND Java-DB). This very particular problem has
been cured in 3.5 and older office versions could use a distinct Java
version as a work-around.

I used the Tools Relationships and dragged/drug the field in one table to
the matching field in the other table, just like in MS Access.

The second table was done the same way.

I now have a lot of different tables with relationships between them. When
I create the forms for data entry to these various tables it causes the same
error because of the deleted table. I had created another table and set up
the relationships for it and when I kept getting the error, I renamed the
new table to the old table that had been deleted but it still didn't work.

The problem seems to be with the SYS_FK_xxx tables that didn't get deleted

You never define a relationship in Base. You always do that in a
database software even when you are working with the built-in database
engine (status bar reads: embedded HSQLDB), this integrated database
behaves exactly like any external database such as MySQL and many others.
The self explaining error message comes from that database software and
it says that you try to enter a patient-ID that has no counterpart in
the patient table's primary key.

Base can help you to avoid all integrity constraint errors by means of
subforms and list boxes which are the 2 key elements to edit relational
data in Base forms.

[Example] Relations reflected by list boxes in forms:

It looks like that when I renamed my new table to the old table the data got
dropped. I am using combo-boxes and they showed the data so don't know why
I was able to see the data. Maybe it was just the name and not the PK that
was left in the table. But after reading your reply I looked at the table
and it was empty.

I dropped the new table and then recreated it and entered two records and
now my form are working as they should.

I find that when having problems just being able to talk about them they get
solved by getting another perspective on them.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, I know where the table is located. First step is to make a
copy of your database. Then rename it so that its extension is changed
from x.odb to x.zip. Open x.zip with an archive manager (Winzip or 7zip
are two that will do this). This will produce several folders and three
files. Double click the database folder to open it. Then open the script
file. The relationship can be deleted there. After making your changes,
you zip all the files together and rename the database file from x.zip
to x.odb.
WARNING!! Unless you are well versed in extracting files from a
zipped format or adding them to it, this is not something that you
should be doing.
Here is a work around to try. Open the database, x.odb. Then from
its main database window, create a new database, y.odb. Copy and paste
the tables from x.odb to y.odb. Define the relationships that you want,
and recreate your forms.
Suggestion: Download Getting Started with Base (one of the chapters
in the Getting Started Guide). It might be a refresher on the
differences between Access and Base (there are some differences). Also,
please study the section on how to set and modify relationships using
Base.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: calc problem

2012-02-27 Thread Václav Medek
Andreas, I tried it now on Windows 7 with Libre Office 3.5 and it is
working right as expected. When ctrl+c/ctrl+v some email address to
Calc, no dialogue appear and address is just filled into Calc cell (as
link, not as clear text, but it is not important for me).
But in Linux (tried on Ubuntu and Gentoo) dialogue is there... So maybe
you are right that it is OS/browser problem.

Dan I think that discussion what is faster or slower is off topic. I
just need to solve problem with dialogue. Not find how to do it better
or another way.

You see the text import dialog when you copy and paste multi-line text.
This will never happen when you use the URL copy of the respective browser.
Under Linux you can also use the system clipboard (middle mouse) to
paste previously selected unformatted text. But this will also trigger a
text table import in case of multiple lines.
If you want multi-line text in one cell, you can always hit F2 before
pasting.

Copy this contact with ctrl+c and try to paste it to Calc list with

What happen is, that some import dialog appear and you must click
your decision. In that dialog there is no checkbox like remember my

email addresses, you must everytime click this dialog. This is bad,
very bad...
So my question is: is there any option how to turn this dialog off? I
didn't find it...

LibreOffice 3.4.4 in Ubuntu 11.10.

I still dont have any idea what and how to configure to avoid that

[libreoffice-users] Libreoffice 3.5

2012-02-27 Thread MoolsM

I'm currently running Windows Vista.

I've had no problems with previous versions of LibreOffice(L.O.) and so
I installed L.O. 3.5

The installer says that I've successfully installed L.O. 3.5.

When I click on the icon I get some startup details and then a windows
message saying L.O has stopped working.

Tried a few cycles of un-install and reinstall but keep getting the same
problem.

Any thoughts?

I hate Vista. I had to reinstall 3.4.5 twice to get it working on my
Vista Laptop. Vista is a bad OS, compared to XP and Win7. One thing
you need to do is reboot between uninstall and the next install. Also,
I would make sure the program data folder for LO is removed after the
uninstall. There may be things that are left in that type of folder
that could be the issue. Also, make sure your downloaded version was
completely downloaded. Sometimes people have their downloads
unfinished from one of our mirrors [which the download system choose
for you].

For now, I would stick with 3.4.5. If you can.

3.5.0 is the cutting edge version or some people call it bleeding
edge when these type of errors happen.

To be honest, unless you need any feature that is new with 3.5.0, I
would stick with 3.4.5 for a bit longer. It is always nice to see what
the newest version is all about, so to speak, but if you want to use LO
without any issues, stick with the previous version when the newest one
ends with .0 or .1. These are not for the people who need it for
day-to-day, business, or enterprise, applications.

I have been using LO since the first month it was out. I am sticking
with 3.4.5 till 3.5.x gets to .1 or .2, at least, since I use it for
home-office work.

4000 rows is nothing. Shouldn't be a problem for LibreOffice Calc. A
few years ago the maximum number of rows (for OpenOffice.org Calc –
there was no LibreOffice back then) was 32 000 (2¹⁵-768), then they
changed it to 65 536 (2¹⁶), and finally they changed it to 1 048 576
(2²⁰). What was the point, if OpenOffice.org/LibreOffice is not
supposed to be able to handle even 4000 rows?
Speed has always been an issue for LibreOffice/OpenOffice.org, even
though they worked a lot for speed improvements a couple of years ago.

[libreoffice-users] Calc broke my document

A spreadsheet (ods) I have been using a while broke, and now Calc won't
open it. Also alternatives refuse to open it. Passing it through

*Fatal*) below.

Now I know that I can unzip the document, search for the offending
attribute, delete this and rezip - and of course that didn't work.

The point is, in 6 years that I use OO, and LO intensively I never had
this before. And recently I saw other mentions on this list of broken
Calc spreadsheets.

I think there is a regression in Calc. I am using LO 3.4.4 from Ubuntu.

Sadly, this is true.
You may use a hierarchy of forms and subforms to mimic relations on form
level (display records in subform that are related to the selected item
in the parent form).
You may use another dBase driver. If I remember correctly, there is one
for Windows ODBC.

[libreoffice-users] Presentation conversion to/from Powerpoint - layout

2012-02-27 Thread Roger Sawkins
I have Powerpoint on one machine and LibreOffice on another. I want to be
able to edit and save PowerPoints on either machine. However, when loading
Ppt in Presentation it does not always convert font and layout properly.
Occasional tabs or spaces are missing or duplicated; occasional text boxes
have text outside the slide, etc.

Then when I then save the presentation as ppt it changes the font, for
example, from bold to basic and shows tabs or spaces (see above) as missing.

Is there some way of ensuring that the conversions are consistent and
presentations can be switched back and forth?

As a separate issue, in some cases Presentation show jpg's as sqeezed in
the slide listing on the left, although they are OK when I click on the
slide or when I do the show.

Roger
