[libreoffice-users] Re: Make a form that allows user to drag and drop in an image

2012-04-11 Thread avamk
Hi Drew,

It looks amazing now, and the functionality is great. I am especially glad
that it will work in Linux, Mac, and Windows!

Were you going to write an explanation for the code, or just the form?
Either way, if you can start a draft, I can help word smith it (probably by
asking you questions about it).

I think this is so useful, perhaps it can be integrated into the standard
LibreOffice Base macro set???

Thanks!

[libreoffice-users] Bullets in .doc/.docx documents always become ^?

Hello,

This is a problem I've been encountering since the old OpenOffice days:

Whenever I open a .doc or .docx document created with Micro$oft Office,
bullet points in it always become ^s (sans quotes and s).

Does anyone know why??? Is this a bug in the import filter, or something

[libreoffice-users] Consistently poor Impress performance in Mac OS X

2012-04-11 Thread avamk
Hello,

This is a question I asked in ask.libreoffice.org, but did not get a useful
reply:

I've got the latest Impress running on my MacBook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6.8.
(but this problem existed in previous versions, too)

For the past few months I tried really really hard to make all my
presentations with Impress. The big problem is that it's performance is the
exact opposite of snappy. (what is a good antonym for snappy?)

After adding images (they are each just 500-800kb JPGs) to, say, 20 slides,
Impress grinds almost to a halt. Things respond 1-2 seconds after the mouse
click.

This is especially frustrating when clicking, holding, the dragging, because
there is always a 1-2 second lag between each step. For instance, if I click
and drag the corner of an image to resize it, the motion is not smooth, but
rather occurs in jumps. Another instance would be when I click on a slide
to select/show it in the main window. If I move the mouse cursor away after
clicking on a slide, the lag makes Impress think I am dragging and
re-ordering the slide! And of course there is a few seconds delay here as
well.

So my question is: What's wrong that's making Impress perform so poorly?? My
Mac has a Intel Core i7 2.66 gHz CPU, advanced Nvidia GT 330M graphics, and
8.0 GB of memory, it should be overkill for something like this! I tried
tweaking the number of objects kept in memory, size of objects, etc. to no
avail.

Is it just because Impress has poor performance? (in which case I think it
really need to be improved) Or am I doing something wrong??? M$ PowerPoint
and Apple Keynote works beautifully and snappily, but I wish I could use
Impress!

Thanks!

Re: [libreoffice-users] Consistently poor Impress performance in Mac OS X

2012-04-11 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Impress is not brilliant.  It's getting there but i think most of the work went
into Writer and Calc.  There are alternatives that each have slightly different
aims.

However, 500-800Kb images are quite large.  If you open one of the images with
Gimp (or something) you could resize the image down to something smaller than
bill-board sized.

Since the issue is possibly more important for websites it is easier to find a
How To such as these

I guess Ponderous is an antonym of snappy but it doesn't quite convey the
frustration quite as well as the way you used.  Plus it's waaay outside the
vocabulary range of most native-English speakers.  Apparently the average is
around 100-250 words (depending on which study you read).

Hi :)
That sounds very unusual.  There is a nice little selection of different
bullet-points and i've not noticed any that look like that.  Have you tried
renaming your User Profile?

Can you get someone with MS Office to send a document with various different
types of bullet points to see if it's just images used as bullet opints that
have that effect?  The standard MS bullet points look about the same in OOo/LO
as they do in MS Office afaik.

Caution, I know nothing about spreadsheet programs.

It's perhaps worth saying that you probably cannot conveniently learn how to
construct a spreadsheet by asking general questions on a mailing list such as
this.  You would probably be well advised to learn about spreadsheets somehow -
perhaps by reading the help text, consulting help locally from friends or
colleagues, reading guides (perhaps from the library), or attending a course.

I get a .txt from our supplier every month with 101,961 part numbers, prices
and more.  I have a list of items we stock or have stocked - it also has part
numbers but also has where we put them and how many we have - this has 1280
numbers.  What I want to do is make one list with all the info from the two.
I have two files with the data in .ods format.

You might find it convenient first to copy or import the data in one file as a
second sheet within the other file, but this is not necessary to achieve what
you desire, in fact: you can refer to data in the other document file directly
if you prefer.

Can they be merged based on the part number?  That's the only common info and
they start at top left on both files.

What exactly do you hope to see?  I'm guessing that your data is in columns and
that you want a copy of the larger list - with however many columns that
already has - along with extra columns to contain the information from the
smaller list where a row for that particular item exists in that list.  You can
do this by adding formulae in *all* the rows of the additional columns in the
larger list that will carry the data harvested from the smaller list.  The
VLOOKUP() function will search for and retrieve the data you need.

o The first parameter of the function needs to be the search criterion: in your
case, this will simply be the part number - probably in your first column.
o The second parameter is the array that will be searched: this is the whole of
the data area of your second, smaller list.
o The third parameter is the index of the column in your smaller list that will
be picked up in each case: this may well be 2 for your first additional column,
3 for your second, and so on.
o The fourth parameter needs to be FALSE (or zero) in order that rows that do
not have corresponding data in the second sheet return an error instead of a
nearby value.

A few extra notes:
o If you construct the formula carefully in one cell, you can copy or fill it
into many columns of your very many rows and the spreadsheet will modify the
formula as it is copied so as to create a unique version in each cell that will
achieve what you need.
o To prevent references to your smaller list data from moving as the formula is
filled or copied, you will need judicious inclusion of the $ character to
freeze those references.
o With the fourth parameter set to FALSE, your formulae will return #N/A
(meaning value not available) where there is no corresponding row in the
smaller list.  If you want such cells instead to be empty, you could use the
ISNA() function to recognise this case and replace the error indication with
nothing.

So your final formula (in the first row of the first additional column) may
look something like this:
 =IF(ISNA(VLOOKUP(A1;stocklist;2 ;0));;VLOOKUP(A1;stocklist;2 ;0))
If the VLOOKUP() fails to find a value, the error value is replaced by a null
string; otherwise the VLOOKUP() value is used.  It would be the reference to
your stock list that would have to contain the $ signs: if it extended from A1
to (perhaps?) C1280, then the array would have to appear as $A$1:$C$1280 (not
just A1:C1280).

As I say, you would have to gain some fluency with using spreadsheets before
you could make any use of what I have suggested.

I trust this helps.

Hi :)
I generally get details like that from DistroWatch
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=ubuntu
Details about each and every package included in a distro is beyond the scope
of a decent press release announcing the new release.  Also why would TDF keep
a record of what each distro uses?

DistroWatch are pretty awesome at what they do and are quick to make changes if
you ever find a mistake although that's unlikely.  People that attempt to
duplicate their work rather than support it tend to end up covering maybe 20
distros at most and fairly badly and out-dated.  If anything it would be nice
for TDF to give DW a regular donation, however small.

I looked at what LO it installed and it stated 3.5.1.2 - 350m1 [build 102].

I will be removing this version and use 3.4.6, but I had not seen any info
about what Ubuntu 12.04 was going to have.

Thought someone here might want to know.

A database schema (database name) must be created in advance of any

A useful tool for this is phpmyadmin. This is included in XAMP for
example, which contains a complete apache web server, mysql and php

http://www.apachefriends.org/fr/xampp-windows.html

via JDBC: (These steps are only valid for the MySQL connector)

Get the newest JDBC driver from

http://www.mysql.com/downloads/connector/j/

Start LibreOffice

Goto Tools Options Java

Press the browse button near Classpath and browse for the *.jar
file(s) of your driver.

The jar file is part of the zip file that you download from the mysql
website. Look for the file called mysql-connector-java-5.1.18.jar

Restart LibreOffice

Open the data source administration dialog (Tools/Data Sources...) or
start the database wizard.

Press the button New Data Source, in the name field, enter a valid
name like MySQL JDBC, and keep JDBC as type.

Enter the data source URL
mysql://host:3306/Nameofyourdatabase

Switch to the tab page JDBC. Now you have to enter the driver class
name. For the MySQL connector driver you have to insert:

com.mysql.jdbc.Driver.

You can test that the driver is loaded correctly by pressing the
corresponding button. If the driver doesn't load, then there is either
something wrong with your driver setup or your Java installation.

Enter the name of the user you wish to connect, and mark the checkbox if
this user needs a password.

To be sure that your settings will be saved, press the Apply button.

You can also test the connection by clicking on the appropriate button.
If the connection fails, you will get an error message. If it succeeds,
you will get a message telling you so.

Save your ODB document with an appropriate name.

Once saved, click on the Tables icon in the main Base window, the tables
of your mysql database should appear (if you have defined any in advance).

Hello Alex ( LibO folks),
Thank you for asking and also for your kind instructions - and I am
sorry for my late reply.
No, there are no specific issues, I just reacted to the discussions
about connecting problems -- and a lot of other too, especially in
version LibO3.5.x.
The reason to my reaction is that I appreciate very much the idea of
having a free office suite like LibO and OpenO but I am worried about
the strategy of LibO's distribution.
In my vocabulary LibO-Base with it's embedded HSQLDB is a database
program, a package like MSAccess with it's JET-engine. My knowledge of
databases is limited to some 30 apps in MSAccess (VBA macros,
forms/subforms, reports, etc, but not SQL more than absolutely needed)
almost 15 years ago, some of them quite demanding. So, not interested
in buying a new MSAccess for my need of 2-4 quite simple databases (
like an address book plus some date calculations, subforms, reports) nor
to learn HTML/PHP languages or SQL, I read the introduction and
installed LibO3.4.5 (on PC:Win7Prof/32B; on laptop: Win7Prem/64B) in
early January this year. Believing that LibO-Base should be sufficient
for my need.

I am sure LibO is a powerful package but I have not been able to find
this out; I have never experienced a program causing that much problems
from the very beginning I had problems first with the installing
(no clear info about JRE) then with date calculations that did not work
(the embedded HSQL is obviously an old not supported version), then
wasting a lot of time and nerves trying to get Report Builder and
creating Forms and Subforms in DesignView work as promised in
instructions -- they don't!
LibO's Help (lifebuoy) opens to a lot of pages telling what
different kind of help you can get, but it has not a single link to real
immediate help. As an user I shall not be dependent of an ever so fine
community's answers, I want to have the help immediately (see MSAccess,
OpenO, etc). The LibO documentation and getting started - Base seem to
be available only for those who know about them or who know where to
look -- not for them who are new to the program. The only help of some

 http://www.mysql.com/downloads/connector/j/

(no clear info about JRE) then with date calculations that did

Details about each and every package included in a distro is beyond the scope of a decent press release announcing the new release. Also why would TDF keep a record of what each distro uses?

DistroWatch are pretty awesome at what they do and are quick to make changes if you ever find a mistake although that's unlikely. People that attempt to duplicate their work rather than support it tend to end up covering maybe 20 distros at most and fairly badly and out-dated. If anything it would be nice for TDF to give DW a regular donation, however small.

I just installed Ubuntu's 12.04 LTS, in the final beta version, on my laptop
that had 11.10.

I looked at what LO it installed and it stated 3.5.1.2 - 350m1 [build 102].

I will be removing this version and use 3.4.6, but I had not seen any info
about what Ubuntu 12.04 was going to have.

Thought someone here might want to know.

Huge Snip
 Tom and Dan,
Thank you for your kind replies. I was almost expecting a lynch mob
outside my front door this morning!

 To Dan:
Thanks for the fine links. They look very good. I have now read them
(Base part) and shall later begin to work them in practice.
If I only had had this fine basic info not only in January but fifteen
 years ago!
 Some questions:
1 These drafts are written for OpenO (v3.2-3.3) in 2010 -- are
they still drafts or are they final?
2 do they apply also to LibreO -- if yes, from what version on
 (LibO3.4.xx)?
3 I may have some ideas to propose -- to whom is it best to
address them; can I get a separate mail address or shall I handle them
 on this mailing list?
 Best regards
 Pertti Rönnberg

These are all drafts and apply to LO 3.4.6. I haven't checked
against 3.5.x just yet because it is not stable enough yet.
Base has not changed very much since it was first introduced in OOo
2.0.0, so the principles contained in them apply even today.I am doing a
rewrite for LO 3.4.6 for the first 4 chapters: Introducing Base,
Planning/Designing Your Database, Data Input and Removal, and Data
Output.
While still a draft, the first 2 chapters for LO are on the
Document Foundation website: (These are a newer than the OOo draft
chapters in the link I mentioned earlier)

Proposals are welcome! You can send them directly to me using the
same email address at the top of this message.

 Thanks!

For Vanilla builds (i.e. downloaded from *.libreoffice.org), LibreOffice uses
the FDO (free desktop org) bugtracker[1].

Instructions see Wiki[2].

For easier proceeding, you might want to use the Bug Submission Assistent[3].

If you use a (modified) distro build, you'll want to use your distro's

I have an old spare laptop (HP/Compaq NX9005) and thought of installing a
Linux, e.g. Ubuntu on it.

are there other Linux-distributions than Ubuntu to be considered as best
for private/home use?
if Ubuntu, what version do you recommend to start with?
can I install Ubuntu without a LibO -- and install LibO separately ? Or
OpenO?
what LibO version is today best in the Linux/Ubuntu world?

Thanks in advance
Pertti Rönnberg

[libreoffice-users] problems with document conversion

2012-04-11 Thread Eric S. Johansson
this problem just bit me in my job hunt. Apparently for the past two or three
months, I've been sending out resumes and cover letters in Microsoft Word DOC
format and they were garbled sometimes simply margin errors sometimes completely
unreadable. Usually, I started with the standard odt format and converted to
doc. occasionally I would do couple revisions in the .doc form and then convert
back to ODF for my baseline. I was using revisions 3.5.0 and 3.5.1

this really hurts because there were a lot of really good jobs that I qualified
for but didn't get any responses to. I'm not saying that the document conversion
problem was the sole cause but it didn't help my application any. :-)

what I need help with is determining if conversion is going to be an ongoing
problem in which point, I migrate to Jarta or equivalent. If it's not an ongoing
problem, was it a procedural one. That I did something wrong in the handling of
documents that caused it to become corrupt? For example, should I always start
with the odt format and convert out words to PDF and DOC? And last, is detection
of a failed conversion? Would it make sense for me to use jarta to verify
document conversion.

if it is a procedural error and I need to start from odt as the primary source,
is there any way to automate the production of alternative formats? For example,
if I'm saving a file, can I also do document conversion at the same time and
save both PDF and DOC format files.

Thank you for any help in resolving this problem.

PS no, PDF is not always a solution. Many agencies and companies here in the
states only accept doc/docx format documents

[libreoffice-users] Re: Sending mail merged document to email

My provider uses TLS on the SMTP server which is on port 25.

When I select that server from LO, check use SSL, type in user name and

Are you sure TLS is not working? Or is my provider supporting both SSL

If I use an email account that doesn't need SSL or TLS then it all works
OK - if I use a Gmail account of which the smtp server apparently
(according to their website) uses either SSL or TLS on port 465, it
immediately becomes un-responsive. (My Gmail accounts work perfectly
well in Thunderbird and Outlook!)
However that doesn't answer the question why doesn't mail merge to
email call the default email client? This seems to be absolutely BONKERS.
If I use File-Send-Document as email then it DOES call the default email
client! BONKERS!
Using the mail merge to email function in LO there is NO RECORD of the
sent emails anywhere. Even MORE BONKERS!

[libreoffice-users] LibreOffice/OpenOffice - bullets/numbering between Open* formats and MicroSoft

2012-04-11 Thread dcannell
I use Ubuntu at home and the office but I do have to communicate with
the outside world which unfortunately uses lots of MicroSoft Office in
various flavors..

I've found that I can't (currently using OpenOffice) maintain bullets or
outline numbering between .odt and .doc formats which is probably no
surprise to anyone. Sure would be nice if someone had a fix for this
issue as I see it's not unique to me. Especially since I only use
Ubuntu and especially at home since I have no access to MicroSoft Word
in any flavor.

My other issue is that with the OpenOffice that came native with my
Ubuntu 10.04 I can't download LibreOffice for testing without blowing my
OpenOffice away. That doesn't seem like a very friendly way of doing
business because what if I truly don't like LibreOffice once I get it
loaded? Not saying that I won't but I've been in the computer business
since 1964 and know that not is all as it seems 8-)

At this point I'm working on a project that needs to get done in a
couple of days that uses outline numbering that also needs to be
accessible to MicroSoft users. I'm sort of up a tree with not quite
knowing what to do.

Any help appreciated.

Sincerely, David M. Cannell

Re: [libreoffice-users] Consistently poor Impress performance in Mac OS X

2012-04-11 Thread Don C. Myers

Hi,

I would try downsizing the pictures such as Tom suggested. I don't do
much work in Impress, and I run Ubuntu. I upgraded my brother's laptop
on Monday to Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2. The computer is 4 years old, and has a
minimal dual core processor and 3 gigs of memory. I installed
LibreOffice 3.5.2 direct from the Document foundation site. He does a
lot of work with power point shows, many of which are sent to him
created in Microsoft. I wanted to make sure they were working. All were
in Microsoft format, several with the pptx format. I tested about 7 of
them, and all worked fine without any lag whatsoever. I do not know how
big the picture sizes were, but with the high end hardware you have, I
am surprised you are having an issue. Picture size is the only thing I
can think of.

Impress is not brilliant. It's getting there but i think most of the work went into Writer and Calc. There are alternatives that each have slightly different aims.

However, 500-800Kb images are quite large. If you open one of the images with Gimp (or something) you could resize the image down to something smaller than bill-board sized.

Since the issue is possibly more important for websites it is easier to find a How To such as these

I guess Ponderous is an antonym of snappy but it doesn't quite convey the frustration quite as well as the way you used. Plus it's waaay outside the vocabulary range of most native-English speakers. Apparently the average is around 100-250 words (depending on which study you read).

Things respond 1-2 seconds after the mouse
click.

This is especially frustrating when clicking, holding, the dragging, because there is
always a 1-2 second lag between each step. For instance, if I click and drag the corner
of an image to resize it, the motion is not smooth, but rather occurs in
jumps. Another instance would be when I click on a slide to select/show it in
the main window. If I move the mouse cursor away after clicking on a slide, the lag makes
Impress think I am dragging and re-ordering the slide! And of course there is a few
seconds delay here as well.

So my question is: What's wrong that's making Impress perform so poorly?? My
Mac has a Intel Core i7 2.66 gHz CPU, advanced Nvidia GT 330M graphics, and 8.0
GB of memory, it should be overkill for something like this! I tried tweaking
the number of objects kept in memory, size of objects, etc. to no avail.

Is it just because Impress has poor performance? (in which case I think it
really need to be improved) Or am I doing something wrong??? M$ PowerPoint and
Apple Keynote works beautifully and snappily, but I wish I could use Impress!

Thanks!

I usually save to MSO formats last. Can you use RTF format instead of

If you can post a typical document either online with a link or via

Re: [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice/OpenOffice - bullets/numbering between Open* formats and MicroSoft

2012-04-11 Thread Séamas Ó Brógáin
David:

You should probably be aware that the automatic bullet feature (and the
automatic numbering feature) in Microsoft Word does not place the
appropriate characters within the text, as it seems to do, but simulates
them by means of templates that are stored in another part of the file
(if I understand correctly). When a text containing bullets added by
this feature is opened in a different application the bullets may change
to different characters, or to numbers, or may be lost completely.

I presume something similar happens when the process is reversed.

I would strongly advocate not using this feature at all but, if you want
bullets, to add them explicitly as characters.

For outline numbering or dynamic numbering generally I don’t think there
is any solution other than substituting the actual numbers as plain text
before converting a document.

[libreoffice-users] [Announce] HyperSQL 2.2.8 Released

2012-04-11 Thread Andreas Säger

http://hsqldb.org/

HyperSQL was selected as the SourceForge Project of the Month for January 2012
and is featured on SourceForge.net home page. An interview with core developers
is published here.
HyperSQL 2.2.8 Released

HSQLDB (HyperSQL DataBase) is the leading SQL relational database engine
written in Java. It supports nearly full ANSI-92 SQL (BNF format) and full core
SQL:2008. It offers a small, fast multithreaded and transactional database
engine with in-memory and disk-based tables and supports embedded and server
modes. It includes tools such as a command line SQL tool and GUI query tools.

HSQLDB supports the widest range of SQL Standard features seen in any open
source database engine: SQL:2008 core language features and an extensive list
of SQL:2008 optional features. Many extensions to the Standard, including
features of other popular database engines, are also supported.

HyperSQL is a platform independent Java program which does not require
any installation. Just extract the downloaded zip archive to some place
and add ./lib/hsqldb.jar to the Java class path in the LibreOffice options.
HyperSQL 2.2.8 is downward compatible with the embedded database engine
of LibreOffice.

You can easily convert your embedded databases to real ones which gives
you several advantages:
- A modern database engine with more functionality than the embedded
version 1.8.
- A high level of data safety because the database will not be destroyed
when the office crashes which is a big issue with embedded LibreOffice
databases.
- Security by means of user privileges and optional data encryption.
Embedded HSQLDB provides full access to anyone.
- You can start the database engine as a service and connect multiple
LibreOffice clients with different user log-ins. Encrypted connections
are supported.
- And you can connect LibreOffice to the local copy of HyperSQL directly
(cached mode analog to the embedded database).

For a better Base experience!
Cheers,
Andreas Säger

I have a number of files that I use in both LO and MS Word 2007 on a
Windows 7 64 bit Home system.

While before now - there hasn't been a problem. However, as soon as I
upgraded LO 3.5.1 - 3.5.2 - in every single existing .doc file I open
 in
3.5.2 - the top part of each line is cut off, and if I saved the doc
 and
re-open it in MS Word - the documents shows file corruption.

Two questions - 1. What might be causing this problem? 2. What is the
 best
way to downgrade back to LO 3.5.1?

 1. It seems that LO uses it's own mail sending function rather than

is that all about? Why doesn't it just call my default email client?

 2. As my email address is GMail, the GMail smtp server uses TLS

There is NO option to select TLS for the sept server in the built-in

So it seems that I cannot mail merge a document from LO direct to email.

 Great.

OK, if no-one's going to respond to this, where do I file a bug for this?

Hi,

Using GMail for a mail merge campaign is probably not ideal, there are
important restrictions:

In any case, I'd agree this is a missing configuration option. You can

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: document conversion problems, losing formatting information.

2012-04-11 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
This gets more bizarre, in a subsequent version of the same document, Word
now opens the file just fine and displays the first line indents as
intended, even though that formatting function does not seem to exist in
word as part of paragraph formatting in the same way as it does in LO.
MY LO version was 3.5.2.2 and I'm on Windows 7.

With a longish document (45 pages), which started life once as a .odt, but
then was converted to a .doc because of a collaboration with word users, I
revised some of the layout in a .doc format.

When saving it however the change in formatting (first line indentations
 in
some of the paragraphs) is lost. I discovered this when sending it to a
colleague for editing, who opened it in Word, and did not see the indents
 I
 had claimed to apply.

Since then, I can save the doc as .odt and preserve the indents as
intended. I cannot however convert it to .doc, or I end up having the
problem, and in fact in some cases word claims the document is corrupted.
 I
can save it as a .doc and .docx and open it in word, but the formatting
info is lost, and in fact, Word does not seem to give me the option to do
 a
first line indentation in its style sheets, so I cannot even replicate the
 problem.

The issue is the same if I do it manually or via the style sheet. It is
lost as soon as I try to save it in .doc.

I cannot seem to replicate the first line indentation in Word, because it
does not have the option, I have found no way to work around this.

If your version of Libreoffice is v.3.5.2, please check the section on the
3.5 Features page that is entitled: ODF 1.2 Conforming Documents, (you'll
find the section near the bottom of the page).

I generally get details like that from DistroWatch
 http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=ubuntu
Details about each and every package included in a distro is beyond the
scope of a decent press release announcing the new release. Also why
would TDF keep a record of what each distro uses?

Distrowatch really isn't for that.

For Ubuntu I've been documenting that here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LibreOffice
It's also the first result in most search engines if you search Ubuntu
LibreOffice.

You can also check here:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=libreofficesearchon=namessuite=allsection=all

Debian and other derivatives have similar sites:
http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=libreofficesearchon=namessuite=allsection=all
http://packages.trisquel.info/search?keywords=libreofficesearchon=namessuite=allsection=all
(actually, identical)

TDF could keep a record to distribution-specific records/links such as
the above, I think it's useful, but ultimately it's each distro's job to
make that information available (which they do, see above).

[libreoffice-users] Calc: cell protection + cut paste

2012-04-11 Thread miakoiv
Hello,

I made really nice project for my customer with Calc because we didn't want
to use Excel, but now we are in trouble, because in Calc you can't protect
the formulas in cells from cust + paste modifications.

Cells are protected and documentation says that when the cells are protected
you are not able to modify the formula. But that's unfortunately not true.

If a protected cell reads data from non protected cell and the user decides
to cut + paste the information, the orginal formula in the protected cell
will be modified. And that's a very bad behaviour in my opinion. It should
prevent cut + paste, because to allowing to do the cut + paste requires
modification of the formula and that should not be allowed since the cell is
protected.

It's totally impossible to tell customer to undo exact the same cut + paste
that he/she just did. Especially they propably wont notice the mistake until
it's too late.

Does anyone have any usable solution for us? I'm are getting desperate here
because I need to fix these errors every week.

Is this a known bug or is this designed behaviour? I'm really keen to know
because if this is a real feature, then we have no choice but to use
something else here.

Yours,

Mikko Koivisto

Hi Russ,

Well it works for me.

I have to do the following:

With the document open,

ToolsOptionsUser
Change user name information

Close the options dialog

FileProperties

With the checkbox 'Apply User Data' ticked,
click the RESET button

Close the properties editor

FileExport to PDF
I'm exporting as PDF 1.5, picks the name change up
every time.

Despite its name, the parallel install does not install the software but
just copies the executables into the chosen directory. So nothing will be

The only thing you have to take care is that your user profile does not get
altered. For this you should tweak the UserInstallation line of the

BONKERS.
If I use File-Send-Document as email then it DOES call the default

Using the mail merge to email function in LO there is NO RECORD of the

If you could get to sending mail via google's smtp server google should

I wonder if there is a port setting in one of the LO configuration files?

 FileProperties

Re: [libreoffice-users] LOo 3.5.1.2 upgrade in Ubuntu Natty does not 'see' old templates

2012-04-11 Thread Don C. Myers

Hi Fabian,

I've been using Ubuntu for 3+ years. A few years ago I had some issues
with the Ubuntu OpenOffice packages. It might not have been their fault
since I had non-repo versions installed when I did an upgrade. To fix
that problem, I did a complete uninstall of the Ubuntu version and
installed the official OpenOffice version. Ever since then I've used
only the official OpenOffice version before LibreOffice came along, and
the official LibreOffice version from http://www.libreoffice.org/. they
aren't as pretty, but functionality has been very good. I've been
running 3.5.2 on Ubuntu 11.10 and also 12.04 Beta 2 without any issues.
And the recent documents function works perfectly fine in the
LibreOffice version in Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04 Beta 2. Here is how I do
my install: (This is for the 64 bit version.)

Download LibO_3.5.2_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz to the desktop.
Right click on it and extract it to the desktop. This will give you the
folder LibO_3.5.2rc2_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US

Run the following terminal commands to install it:
1. sudo apt-get remove libreoffice*.*
2. sudo dpkg -i
~/Desktop/LibO_3.5.2rc2_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/*.deb
3. sudo dpkg -i
~/Desktop/LibO_3.5.2rc2_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/desktop-integration/libreoffice3.5-debian-menus_3.5-202_all.deb

If you need help for the 32 bit version, please let me know.

Maybe try to learn to create a CV using only plain text. Wouldn't be

Lot depends on where the documents origin.
If you have influence on the initial state (ie.e. they are from
LibreOffice), you can try with e.g. some of the list styles.
In my experience maybe the representation is not always exactly the
same, but at least well enough to be effective and distinctive.
And if the file finally passes you or someone else with LibreOffice,
re-applying the desired list style might be simple and fast.

Ah well, you see I make some 'presumptions' in this case.
Anyway I hope it does help a bit.

This gets more bizarre, in a subsequent version of the same document, Word
now opens the file just fine and displays the first line indents as
intended, even though that formatting function does not seem to exist in
word as part of paragraph formatting in the same way as it does in LO.

As Brian already explained: it does exist in Word.
But the difference between certain parts of the document may be caused
by the fact that it's an old document and that somewhere the last years
(2 to 4 ...) changes have been made to paragraph indentation and such,
in a necessary rework for lists and numbering (ODF specs).
So where the information represents the same on your screen, it may have
different attributes, causing different export.

Hmm. this does not really help, I guess, only explain ;-)

Well, I run that version under Vista without any problem.

Given your description, and assuming that the rest of the suite
functions properly for you, I'd guess it's a missing java configuration.

Start LibO - not Base, select
ToolsOptionJava
ensure that you have a java engine selected.

If there was not one selected, do so - close the options dialog and exit
the application - next startup you should be good to go.

validation. You can paste arbitrary cells over validated cells which is
also an unexpected effect when you believe in security on document level.

You could uninstall the OOo and then reinstall it later if you have unlimited
download.  The settings tend to get saved but you might want to back-up your

2012-04-11 Thread avamk
Hello,

Thanks for your quick replies!

I really don't think my pictures are too big at all! I've made slideshows
with Apple Keynote or Micro$oft Powerpoint with almost a hundred slides,
that were very multimedia heavy (including videos, high resolution images in
MBs each, etc.), and they run *flawlessly* with transitions, etc.

I also tried installing LibreOffice on other Macs, and get the same problem.
In all cases they grind to a halt as soon as I begin adding things other
than pure text/bullet points to the slides...

Sounds like this is an issue specific to LibreOffice Impress running on the
Mac??? Am I the only person experiencing these performance issues? But if
so, why did the other Macs I tried this on also have the problem?

I think LibreOffice should be built so that it can handle multimedia rich
presentations in Impress!

I would really like to find a solution to this, but otherwise I guess I need
to stick with Apple Keynote for the foreseeable future... :(

Despite its name, the parallel install does not install the software but
just copies the executables into the chosen directory. So nothing will be
 wiped out or changed.

The only thing you have to take care is that your user profile does not get
altered. For this you should tweak the UserInstallation line of the

Just remember that they (Ubuntu) is talking about their version
of LO. When you download LO from the DF website, you do not run into
this problem. Presently, on Ubuntu I have the following files in
the /opt/ folder: libreoffice3.4, libreoffice3.5, lodev3.5, ooo-dev,
ooo-dev3, openoffice.org, and openoffice.org3. I can run soffice from
any one of these folders (those which have a program folder).
The Applications Office contains Apache OpenOffice,
Openoffice.org3.4, and LO 3.4.6. (After installing LO 3.5.2, I installed
the file in the desktop integration folder. I wanted 3.4.6 to be listed
in the Office menu rather than 3.5.2 which over wrote the settings of
3.4.6 in the menu.)

Hi :)
You are welcome.  I think i would move in 3 directions at roughly the same
time.  Hmmm, well maybe i wouldn't go for the 3rd option as my coding is
probably fairly lousy
1.  Keep using the one that does work, ie Apple Keynote but still use Writer
and Calc etc, just not Impress except for just playing around
2.  Test the idea about shrinking some of the images (byte-wise not in physical
size) using Gimp (which is free and OpenSource
3.  Join the Devs Team for a little while and maybe try working on an Easy Hack
or 2 and see if i could build-up to working on Impress to improve it.  Even if
you don't get that far it might free-up some time for other devs to look into
Impress more.
4.  Get a couple of mates to join in with the coding idea as a race to see who
gets the furthest fastest, perhaps make it part of Google's Summer of Code or a
college project or something.

Regards from
Tom :)

The embedded version of HSqlDb is not as good as running HSqlDb as a separate

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Consistently poor Impress performance in Mac OS X

2012-04-11 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think if you can find an individual bug-report or two then you could add a
comment or try to raise their importance level but the chances are that they
would get reset.  Stuill a comment might be good even if the devs hate that
sort of thing.

The GnuLinux version is probably extremely similar to the Mac one.  Both Mac
(a version of Bsd) and GnuLinux are Unix-based platforms so most of the code
is identical.  Allegedly a lot of devs are not aware of the subtle differences
in Bsd and so they end up making the code a little less likely to work quite so
well on a Bsd platform such as Mac.  The Windows version is very different
apparently.

I have no idea how GSoC works.  Perhaps google it?  (sorry!)

Pertti,

As already mentioned Ubuntu has two light versions - xubuntu and lubuntu.

They differ from their name sake primarily by the windows manager they
use and the collection of file managers, editors, etc they promote. They
only really 'retain' their low overhead IF you use all the packages they
promote. As a word processor, I think both use AbiWord.

At the moment I am using xubuntu. Well actually xfce file manager over
the top of 11.10 ubuntu -- primarily to regain a typical menu driven
desktop rather than Unity, which is really nice and glitzy but atrocious
as a business interface.

If you intent is to use libreoffice then your main concern will be how
well it integrates with the file and windows manager for whatever linux
version you choose. Personally I would download the ISOs for the few
distros mentioned and *install them*. They are free except for the
download costs. If you download the DEB files for libreoffice you will
also be able to install it over and over without re-downloading it.

Why install rather than use the Live CD? Personally I find this is the
only real way of evaluating a distro with a particular hardware
configuration. For example, Ubuntu 11.10 sucks at recognizing my
twin-head screens. xfce just worked right out of the box. Go figure.

I suggest you clear your hard drive of all data and set aside an
evening. Load xubuntu from scratch then install libreoffice. Throw on
one of you most complex documents and spreadsheets and have a play. If
the machine is sluggish try lubuntu or any other low-memory dependent
distro. Once you have chosen a distro then customize it and work through
the inevitable issues that appear when setting up a new operating system.

People get quite excited about all this sort of thing so you have to be clear
about what you want to use the machine for, eg gaming platform, server,
web-browsing and officey stuff, multimedia centre, whatever and don't worry
about people being rude as they just can't help it and it can be funny to
watch the steam coming out of their ears.

I'm getting quite into the idea of trying Lubuntu which is very much lighter
than Ubuntu (what isn't!?!) but there are tons of choices.  Mageia is nice
and was based on Mandriva which was one of the prettiest distros.  I tend to
download a few different distros and make a Live Usb (bootable usb-stick)
or LiveCd/Dvd and then just try them out to see what works best and which i
like the look of on a particular machine.  A fun day playing around :)

Most distros now include LibreOffice by default but you can always download
and install the official TDF version from the LibreOffice website.

Ubuntu is made to compete with the latest Windows on top-spec machines.  It's
not really made for old or low-spec ones even with all the effects turned
right down it can be a bit heavy.

 May I ask for advice,
I have an old spare laptop (HP/Compaq NX9005) and thought of installing a
 Linux, e.g. Ubuntu on it.
are there other Linux-distributions than Ubuntu to be considered as
best for private/home use?
if Ubuntu, what version do you recommend to start with?
can I install Ubuntu without a LibO -- and install LibO separately ?
Or OpenO?
what LibO version is today best in the Linux/Ubuntu world?
 Thanks in advance

business because what if I truly don't like LibreOffice once I get it
loaded? Not saying that I won't but I've been in the computer business
since 1964 and know that not is all as it seems 8-)

That is not an issue at all. Forget all the other advise telling you
to uninstall OpenOffice before installing LibreOffice (LO). When you
install LO, it installs in the /opt directory and doesn't touch your
installed OOo application.

Download both the tar.tz files for Debian -
https://www.libreoffice.org/download/?nodetect:
clink on Linux (deb): and your architecture (x86 for 32bit or x86_64 for
64bit). That will link you to (32 bit in this example):
https://www.libreoffice.org/download/?type=deb-x86
Select your language (English (US)?):
That gets you to:
https://www.libreoffice.org/download/?type=deb-x86lang=en-US
Click on the 3.4.6 (you can install 3.5 later if you wish and even run
3.4 + 3.5 + OOo 3.2 in parallel at the same time) and download both the
Main installer and the Help file. Those will download as:

LibO_3.4.6_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz

and

LibO_3.4.6_Linux_x86_helppack-deb_en-US.tar.gz

Open Nautilus and right click on the tar.gz and select 'Extract here'
for both files. That will create two directories:
LibO_3.4.6rc2_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US
and
LibO_3.4.6rc2_Linux_x86_helppack-deb_en-US

Open a terminal and cd to
LibO_3.4.6rc2_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS. Install:

/LibO_3.4.6rc2_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

That will install LO into the /opt directory as /opt/libreoffice3.4.
Now do the same for the help file:
/LibO_3.4.6rc2_Linux_x86_helppack-deb_en-US/DEBS$ sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Now create a menu by installing the desktop integration deb:
/LibO_3.5.1rc2_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/desktop-integration$
dpkg -i *.deb

I don't currently have a 10.04 installed, so if that gives you errors
don't try to install the again, and instead create your own menu.

On the top panel right-click 'Applications' and select 'Edit Menus'. Go
to 'Office' and click on 'New Item'. Fill in as:
Name: LibreOffice 3.4
Command: /opt/libreoffice3.4/program/soffice
Comment: whatever you'd like

To run: Applications|Office|LibreOffice 3.4

Sorry, can't help you with any of the rest.

 Thanks for the response, Tom.

I was able to find a copy of 3.5.1 at
 http://www.oldapps.com/libreoffice.php?old_libreoffice=7404.

After installing it, the .doc corruption problem disappeared. It seems
like 3.5.2 might have a problem with dealing with .doc files.

Correction - the only versions of LO the site is offering for
U.S. English - Windows is 3.5.2 and 3.4.6. I have not found an option for
  3.5.1

You might want to back-up your User Profile first or just rename so

LO generates a new one. Then you could test it to see if it's some

I recommend that you file a bug report with whichever ppa author you got

[libreoffice-users] Re: Calc: cell protection + cut paste

2012-04-11 Thread miakoiv
 miakoiv wrote (11-04-12 20:32)

If a protected cell reads data from non protected cell and the user
 decides
to cut + paste the information, the orginal formula in the protected
 cell
 will be modified.

 I don't get this.
When data, that is used in a formula is changed, removed, the result of
the formula will change, not the formula.

Example:

A1: 1 B1: 2 C1: =A1+B1 (result: 3)
A2: 2 B2: 1 C2: =A2+B2 (result: 3)

Now you protect cells C1 and C2. Now this is an important spreadsheet to
customer and their employees fill the data to cells A1, A2, B1, B2. And it's
of course important that the calculations are correct.

Now the customer enters data to A1 which was supposed to go to A2. He/She
cuts the data from A1 and pastes the data to cell A2.

This is the result:
(he/she wanted to enter 1 to A2, but entered it to A1 and then cut + pasted
it to A2. Then he/she entered number 2 to A1)

A1: 2 B1: 2 C1: =A2+B1 (result: 3)
A2: 1 B2: 1 C2: =A2+B2 (result: 2)

So the formula in C1 is now A2+B1 which is different than A1+B1 so it
changed. And since the cell is protected, you can't change it back to
correct one unless you cut + paste again. But if the formulas are also
hidden, then it's totally impossible to fix it anymore.

I've heard some comments like This is expected and wanted behaviour in all
spreadsheet applications., but then I would like to ask what's the point of
protection when you can't protect the formulas from even the simpliest user
errors? I know that this happens in Excel too, but there you are able to
prevent user from using cut+paste (and if googled, you'll notice that people
use this quite much just for this reeason).

If this is a wanted behaviour, it should atleast give a warning to the user.
Are you sure you want to cut + paste data? It will modify protected
formulas and you won't be able to fix those anymore and you will get wrong
results afterwards? So are you sure? :-)
