Hi :) The marketing list believes the 3.5.x branch is more stable than the 3.4.6. There is not much we can do about that on this list. You need to take this to the marketing list as they are the ones that are psuhing people into using the 3.5.x before many of us feel it is ready. If you are finding problems with 3.5.x then install 3.4.6. Btw sorry about the tone of this email i am getting a lot of flak from the marketing list for daring to disagree with them. Re: [libreoffice-users] Inserting comment causes Impress to close without warning
Hi :) Crashes often seem to be due to a wrong version of java but i can't imagine java being called for that sort of thing. Mac users especially should make sure they have the ultra-latest version. It is possible for most people to get the pre-release version of java 1.7u4 but i think it's tricky for Mac users. Pre-release means less malware but not necessarily completely malware free in java these days. 1. Java is a bit of a nightmare and best avoided if possible and it mostly is avoidable in LO. Tools - Options - Java and then uncheck the box to make sure LO doesn't use java. If it does need it for soemthing you are doing (perhaps an Extension/Add-on or maybe a wizard or Base might need it) then it generally just grumbles and lets you install or re-tick the box in order to carry on. I don't think people have lost any data but it might be best to back-up files (perhaps just do a quick copy of the file) until you feel comfortable. 2. Could you rename your UserProfile to see if that stops the problem from happening? Renaming the UserProfile removes any Extensions/Add-ons that might be lingering from previous installs or picked-up from a version of OpenOffice.org or maybe one of the other forks such as IBM's Lotus Symphony, that may have been on your machine at some point in the past. It also sets all the settings back to factory defaults (which may be different from the settings just after a fresh install). This is the fastest and easiest quick fix for most problems. 3. Please let us know which verion of LibreOffice and which platform (ie just Windows or not is usually enough but if you can be a bit more specific that helps). Click on the Help menu in LO and choose About to find the version of LO if you don't already know. 4. Install the official TDF version of LibreOffice directly from the official LibreOffice website http://www.libreoffice.org/download/ preferaby use the sentence at the top (Change sytem, version or language) to get the more stable 3.4.6 and then come back to the 3.5.3 if you can first at least get the more stable version working. The 3.5.3 has tons of extra features but does sometimes run into problems. 5. Reporting possible bugs to forums and mailing lists is a good idea just to check if it really is a bug or just something a bit wonky but fixable. However you might want to file a proper bug-report in which case these 2 links both get the same end-result https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/bug/ http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport But these are really for the upstream version directly from the official LibreOffice website and you might want to post against a specific version of GnuLinux, such as Ubuntu's bug-tracker system in Launchpad https://bugs.launchpad.net/ Regards from Tom :) --- On Thu, 3/5/12, Dan Lewis elderdanle...@gmail.com wrote: From: Dan Lewis elderdanle...@gmail.com Subject: Re: [libreoffice-users] Inserting comment causes Impress to close without warning To: users@global.libreoffice.org Date: Thursday, 3 May, 2012, 13:00 On Thu, 2012-05-03 at 04:20 -0700, chimak111 wrote: LibreOffice 3.5.2.2 Build ID: 350m1(Build: 202) on Ubuntu 12.04. If it does need it for soemthing you are doing (perhaps an Extension/Add-on or maybe a wizard or Base might need it) then it generally just grumbles and lets you install or re-tick the box in order to carry on. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Legacy Base reports won't open in LibreOffice 3.5
Hi :) Don't get me wrong! There are tons of good reasons for trying the 3.5.x. Tons of new features, probably better compatibility with MS's broken formats, nicer look and feel and generally sexier. It's the one i try first on machines i can access easily. It's just that stability is not it's strongest point! If/when i run into problems or on machines i can't often login as admin the 3.4.6 is the best choice. Tbh most machines here still have 3.3.3 or something like that and are quite happy even though was end-of-life ages ago. Still less vulnerable than MS Office which is invariably fairly ancient and seldom updated. If you are finding problems with 3.5.x then install 3.4.6. Btw sorry about the tone of this email i am getting a lot of flak from the marketing list for daring to disagree with them. If someone finds problems in 3.5.x we need to get bug reports before they install 3.4.6 again. Re: [libreoffice-users] ePub?
Even if you use this extension, the results you get depends upon the complexity of the original document. A simple text document ought to convert well. My documents contain text, figures in frames, tables, and two different types of lists. I have to use another program, Sigil, designed to edit ePUB documents to get the results that I want. As an example, the following link contains two files named Introducing Base (ODT file at the top of the list; ePUB at the bottom of it): http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/base-guide/draft-lo3.4. I did not use writer2epub. Instead, I used Calibre for the conversion from ODT to ePUB and the Sigil to do quite a bit of editing. Both of these programs are open source. (Feel free to download the ODT version of Introducing Base and then use writer2epub to convert it to ePUB. Then compare the difference.) I just did a simple test. I had a simple text document containing only several paragraphs that were first line indented that I converted using writer2epub.
The first line indented paragraph style has a setting for the amount of indention, but the conversion did not include this setting. To get really good results converting ODT documents to ePUB, you need to understand styles and xhtml. (The underlying files for a ePUB document are written in xhtml.) Hi Sharon, This is how I always upgrade LibreOffice in Ubuntu: For the 64 Bit Version: Download LibO_3.5.3_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz from The Document Foundation to the desktop. Right click on it and extract it to the desktop. This will give you the folder LibO_3.5.3rc2_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US Run the following terminal commands to install it: 1. sudo apt-get remove libreoffice*.* 2. sudo dpkg -i ~/Desktop/LibO_3.5.3rc2_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/*.deb 3. sudo dpkg -i ~/Desktop/LibO_3.5.3rc2_Linux_x86-64_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/desktop-integration/libreoffice3.5-debian-menus_3.5.3-2_all.deb 4. In Ubuntu with Unity, I then put new icons in the Launcher Bar for the portions I want there. I've upgraded 4 computers from 3.5.2 to 3.5.3 so far, without any issues at all. I've used this method for years with both OpenOffice, and now LibreOffice. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Inserting comment causes Impress to close without warning
Hi :) It's not negative about the entire community! It's very specifically about 1 specific part. The docs team are doing impressive work but does not have enough people to do everything that they want. No-one thanks them for their work. No-one even seems to know they exist and no-one here bolsters answers by pointing to relevant parts of the documentation as part of their answer. The number of devs reaches well beyond 3 digits but the docs team seems to hover around single digits. OpenSource projects are seldom applauded for their documentation but there are notable exceptions that are heroic. Why leave people with the broken bits when there is something awesome they might be missing out on? Tom. I have 28gbs spare on the hard drive, and that includes the trash can which has a few things in it yet to be deleted fully. Its all one big partition, / and /home all together so there is not an overfilled drive. If someone can tell me where to find my libreoffice profile then I'll delete it because thats where the problem lies I think. If it can be run as root or sudo but not as /user then that sounds like the users profile is corrupted somehow. So if some kind soul can point it out to me then i'll delete it. And I still haven't got any menu items for it. Other than that , if it still doesn’t work then its back to 3.5.2 for me as I need it for various things and its got to work, and that version does work. Thanks Sharon. Tom. Thanks for that, but there is NO .libreoffice folder. So the profile must be elsewhere, probably in /opt/libreoffice3.5/ ... somewhere.
