[libreoffice-users] Intro to LibreOffice Presentations
Hello everyone- Awhile back I created a couple of LibreOffice presentations that I used to help teach the basics of LibreOffice to our elementary school teachers. There are two presentations; the first one covers Writer and Calc, and the second one covers Impress. You can download them from here: Introduction to LibreOffice - Writer and Calc: ODP http://www.jordanschool.com/wp-content/uploads/LO-Presentation.zip PPT http://www.jordanschool.com/wp-content/uploads/Jordan-LibreOffice-Presentation-11-28-2012.ppt PDF http://www.jordanschool.com/wp-content/uploads/Jordan-LibreOffice-Presentation-11-28-2012.pdf Introduction to LibreOffice - Impress - By Aaron Johnson: ODP http://www.jordanschool.com/wp-content/uploads/LibreOffice_Impress_Presentation_Created_by_Aaron_Johnson.odp PPT http://www.jordanschool.com/wp-content/uploads/LibreOffice_Impress_Presentation_Created_by_Aaron_Johnson.ppt PDF http://www.jordanschool.com/wp-content/uploads/LibreOffice_Impress_Presentation_Created_by_Aaron_Johnson.pdf Anyone is welcome to take these and modify them as you like, I just ask that if you change them that you take out my name (Aaron Johnson) and also remove Jordan Catholic School from the presentations as well... This is the default style in the table where your paragraph properties are stored. By default this has indents and spacings of zero. When you past other text into the table, you also paste the other text style which may have the indents. I think that is what I must have done because in some of the cells -- but not all of them -- I did paste text from elsewhere. You can highlight the table and select table contents as the style, or when you paste you can EditPaste SpecialUnformatted to paste without copying the style. Useful to know that. I also noticed another default paragraph style called Table Headers which also has default indents and spacings of zero. This one defaults to centering any text in the cells; whereas Table Contents starts text at the extreme left -- also useful to know. Le 12/03/2013 21:16, Tom Davies a écrit : Hi Tom, Apparently it also doesn't work on Macs although i'm entirely certain how far that goes. For example could Base as a front-end on a Mac read MariaDb as a back-end on a Debian server. Presumably it does but i don't know of anyone that has tried it. Last time I looked, the mariadb server and client programs and libraries were only available via the ports installation system. This is a no go area for me on my OSX server, which is the machine I was using to build LO and the native mysql connector. The ports system on my Macbook screwed up the LO build by installing libraries that conflict with the ones used by the LO build process, so I stopped using my Macbook for building LO ages ago. As far as I know, there are no pre-compiled MariaDB binaries for OSX. Irrespective of the above, the changes being made in the mysql connector code should allow the connector to be built on all platforms where LO can be built, even if libmariadb is not already present. If the builder wants to use a system-present libmariadb, then there is also a compile time option to enable that. Otherwise, the aim is for the libmariadb source code to be downloaded at compile time. This currently works on Linux (from my build log on a 32bit OS), but I am still awaiting the results of test compilations on my OSX server. [libreoffice-users] Re: Problem with MySQL after upgrading OpSys
Le 12/03/2013 15:37, Tom Davies a écrit : Hi Tom, My quick, probably inaccurate guess is the connector. Is the system 32 or 64bit? Clearly a GnuLinux. Is the MySql on the same computer or on a separate server? It has nothing to do with the connector. We are talking about the (in)correct setup of the combination : - web server (apache or lighttpd ?) ; - mysql server ; - PDO or PDI or mysqli PHP and/or apache modules ; - phpmyadmin (which is called MyAdmin in PCLinuxOS - a dumbass name change for no apparently good reason IMHO, but hey) Ian has established that he can access his mysql server from the command line, so the daemon is running. However, what he has not shown us, and the following is directed to you, Ian : - is the apache daemon (web server) running - my guess is yes, if the phpmyadmin login page actually loads ? - which modules are installed in the web server ? - which PHP version and libraries (modules/plugins) are installed ? The error message that Ian posted is well known, a cursory search on Google brings up : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13357561/error-1045-cannot-log-in-to-mysql-server-phpmyadmin and http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1228893 just for starters. Things to remember : - phpmyadmin needs to have an id/pwd combo in order to be able to communicate with the mysql server. Usually, this is asked for by the post-installation scripts of the distrib you are using, but sometimes, this can go wrong, leading the user to think that phpmyadmin has been installed and configured successfully when in fact it has not. After all, the whole point of phpmyadmin is to be able to administer your mysql server via a web interface, so it generally requires extensive privileges at the mysql user account level ; - the file config.inc.php, which is required in order to be able to log into the mysql server from the php scripts. Sometimes, this file does not get copied, or configured correctly, resulting in the inability to log in - the most frequent reason is that this file contains wrong or absent information for a default pwd/id combo (hence the links above explaining this point); - as Girvin mentioned, the my.cnf options have changed in more recent versions of mysql with regard to network access, both locally and remotely, meaning that even on a locally hosted mysql server instance, it can be necessary to change the my.cnf file in order to get access via TCP, even from a local IP address such as 127.0.0.1 Alex -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

I seem to recall that this is actually a known limitation (bug) of the migration tool used internally by LO to copy over the user configuration from the 3.5.x series to 4.0.x. You should look for files bearing a xla/xlb extension in your previous 3.5.x installation and compare them with the ones in your current 4.0 installation. Alternatively, deleting your current 4.0 user profile and restarting LO to generate a new one, might do the trick as well. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Can't view/edit python macro samples
Hi :) OpenSource is about choosing the right tool for the task. NOT about making every tool vast and bloated by making it do everything badly. It's tricky tho. Exactly which parts of the programs would be used rarely and which would be used all the time by everyone. With some things it's obvious but this case is not. It would be nice to have a link somewhere about how to choose the right tools and what to look for, perhaps a recommendation somewhere like here https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Other_Documentation_and_Resources#Programmers Good luck and happy hunting! I have tested it under LO 3.3.4.1, 3.4.5.2, 3.5.5.3, 3.6.5.2 and 4.0.1.2 All crashed when I click on the miniature (on the Slide Pane) of any of the slides mentioned in the previous message. Aaron C Johnson wrote I always assumed that this was a native feature to odp and would not work properly in ppt format. When I open the ppt version it does not work properly, and yes the pdf just shows the OLE icon because a pdf isn't dynamic enough to handle something like that. Agreed for the PDF. But then what is the point of also distributing a PPT file which you know is incomplete/not functional? Aaron C Johnson wrote You're right, I justed tried to open it in LibreOffice 4 and it doesn't crash but the embedded pdf's do not load either... I'll have to try it on another computer with an older version of LibreOffice but I assure you it worked before and I was even able to extract the zip and open it on multiple computers running similar versions of LibreOffice so it must be some sort of regression bug... It doesn't seem to be a regression because it happens in all versions I tested. They should be in .../libreoffice/3/user/backup or .../libreoffice/4/user/backup depending upon your version of LO. I'm not certain where they would be in windows other than the path would include these same folders with the back slash instead of slash: ...\libreoffice\3\user\backup. Deleting all the files in the backup folder could take care of the problem. Also, when LO offers to recover the Base file, you should click Cancel. You will then have another similar message to which you reply accordingly. Finally, you might be give a chance to save the backup file (do not do it). Re: [libreoffice-users] [ANNOUNCEMENT] MySQL-Connector Extension
Hi Dan, Thanks again! Eureka! I had to add the .oxt file extension to the name. Now I can access a MySQL database stored on the Debian Wheezy system (MySQL 5.5) from my laptop client running Linux-Mint-Nadia. The systems are connected through a LAN. They are both 32-bit. I will test it more in the coming days and report on the results to you. I wonder about ONE thing: Even though I specify the name of the database for the connector, LO-Base displays ALL the additional databases that are defined on the server. This is unlike JDBC/ODBC where only the ONE DB mentioned in the definition of the LO-odb-file is shown in the list. Of course one can always specify MySQL-GRANT-statements as required. But somehow I would prefer to only see the intended DB. [libreoffice-users] Help! Sheets tab not showing in Calc
LibreOffice 3.5.6.2 Mac OS 10.6.8 I have a spreadsheet with 4 sheets. File has been taking a long time to save (10 seconds or so for a 650kb file). Auto-filter is currently on for at least one sheet. This morning I closed the file because after saving, the display of the grid was wrong. Auto-filter pop-up arrows and column headings were mixed up and wouldn't revert to the proper display. After closing with a save, when I re-opened, the last sheet I worked on opens, file says there are 4 sheets, but I can't access the sheet tabs to navigate to the other tabs. I've opened Calc options/prefs and made sure it was set to display sheet tabs in the window. No luck. I've spent 8-10 hours on this file with some complicated vlookups, formulas, etc. (most of which have been converted to data by now), and I need to complete it today or tomorrow and am a bit panicked. Can't think of anything else that would cause this, nor how to access the other sheets. Help please! Thanks! Solved: Re: [libreoffice-users] Help! Sheets tab not showing in Calc
OK, after working on this more, I found 2 things. First, I was able to switch between the sheets using the Navigator (I double-clicked where it showed the number of sheets on bottom left of file window). Then I noticed that the scroll bar had been expanded to the entire width of the window, hiding the sheet tabs. I simply clicked the left edge of the bottom scroll bar and dragged to the right to uncover the tabs. Not sure how that happened, but it's working now. Whew! Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: [MariaDB Announce] MariaDB 5.5.30 now available
Dan, I don't know where I read this warning, in this forum or some other, but there should be a warning to users who convert to Mariadb from MySQL. Yes, they can convert to Mariadb, but they may not be able to go back to MySQL once they used Mariadb on the database. I have not yet made that transition, so I have no direct experience with this and cannot corroborate it. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: [MariaDB Announce] MariaDB 5.5.30 now available
Dan, That is another issue. It is good that you were able to get MySQL back when you needed it. I think what I read was that Mariadb changed the database itself somehow, making it incompatible with MySQL. Thus, all the work done on it with Mariadb was lost from the last MySQL-compatible database backup. That is scary - lost data. I just went searching again for where I read this caveat and came up with this posting by ppr:kut to LinuxQuestions.org on 1-31-13: I'm not sure what problems you imagine, but I'm not aware of any issues. You wouldn't be able to switch easily from MariaDB back to MySQL once you start using MariaDB specific features, but that's clear from the start. You can find this message and others on: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/replace-mysql-with-mariadb-in-slackware-4175447832/ Now that I read it again, it sounds like they might be talking about Mariadb user features, not database compatibility. Kind of like someone who moves from msoffice to LO can't go back because they like the LO features. I would like to know if anyone has tried to go back to MySQL from using Mariadb and how *physically* successful it was. Sorry about the confusion. Girvin Dan Lewis wrote: I agree. That will go into the chapter on using Base to connect to various data sources. I think that was originally scheduled to be chapter 8 or 9, but I think this chapter should be moved up to chapter 5. Personal experience: I used synaptic to completely remove mariadb including the config files. Then when I tried to reinstall MySQL, synaptic insisted on installing a mariadb file instead of the mysql file. So, I reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04. Now I have MySQL back. --Dan On 03/13/2013 02:08 PM, Girvin R. Okay, I just tested this on Windows XP SP3 (new installation) with LibreOffice 4.0.1.2 and it did not crash, neither when I extracted the zip, nor when I opened the odp directly from the archive without extracting (which is not the right way to open it obviously but I wanted to cover all bases...) However, the embedded pdf pages did not load the pdf files like they are supposed to... Also, I tried moving the pdf files up one level but it did make any difference... Agreed for the PDF. But then what is the point of also distributing a PPT file which you know is incomplete/not functional? The only reason why I created the ppt was for Microsoft Office users, and to demonstrate that a presentation in LibreOffice Impress can be saved in ppt format and work (almost) perfectly. It doesn't seem to be a regression because it happens in all versions I tested. Did the computers you refer to run Windows or another OS? When I created the Writer and Calc LibreOffice presentation I actually started to create it in LibreOffice 3.5 (or 3.6) in Ubuntu 12.04 and then I finished the presentation on LibreOffice 3.5 (or 3.6) on a Windows XP SP3 machine at our school. I am not having very good luck getting the embedded pdfs to load at all on any versions of LibreOffice, but I still am not having any crashes either... I would suggest that you try to rename Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\LibreOffice and try it again since this will restore all settings back to default. I need to try to load the odp version of the presentation on the computer that I made the presentation on and report back to you. Sorry for all of the headache. It's been awhile since I created it and I really just wanted to post it somewhere for people at least as a starting point if nothing else. Re: [libreoffice-users] [ANNOUNCEMENT] MySQL-Connector Extension
So, you also noticed this. When using the native connector, MySQL will display all of the databases for which the given user has been given access. JDBC/ODBC will only display the specific database that is listed in the database file. Some thoughts. If you are going to use the native connector for MySQL, group the type of databases contained in it according to use. Then allow one or a few users access to each group. With JDBC/ODBC, you have to have a Base file for each database. Or, you can right click in the list section of the database window to select Database Properties. There you can change the database you want to view. To view only one database at a time using the native connector, you would have to set the permissions so that only one user can access a given database other than the administrator. Then you can have base connected to MySQL and change the user name doing what I mentioned in the previous paragraph. Maybe you have a different method of switching databases when you need to do so. --Dan On 03/13/2013 12:46 PM, Heinrich Stoellinger wrote: Hi Dan, Thanks again! Eureka! Re: [libreoffice-users] Text-boxes. How to set up?
One way to do this is to 1. Use Draw to make your curved text-box. 2. Convert this box into a bitmap and save it as a PNG. 3. Use this as the background for your pages. 4. Use paragraph styles to place the text where you want it. (Use the Indenting Spacing tab of the paragraph style.) With the curves in the background, you might need to have several paragraph styles for differences in indentation. --Dan On 03/13/2013 03:05 PM, Tom wrote: Hi :) How can i make a nicely curved text-box that automatically keeps all the text inside the boundaries of the box? If you start the mysql server with --skip-privileges, then the user permissions table is ignored, but then I don't think that will work with phpmyadmin. [libreoffice-users] Help with sorting a CSV file using LibreOffice Calc
Hi, I'm having a bit of a problem sorting records in a CSV file using LibreOffice Calc. I have a CSV file that contains information about ethnic media organizations. The file contains 3 columns: company ID#, company name, and ethnicities. The first field contains an alphanumeric 6 to 8 digit string. The second field contains a plain text string which may occasionally contain fancy symbols. The third field contains a list of ethnicities relevant to the organization, delimited by double percent signs (%%). Here is an example record: 70f9d2,Acme Inc.,Mexican%%Chinese I have been trying to sort this file by selecting everything and clicking Data - Sort... When the sort dialog comes up I select column A and column B as sort keys 1 and 2, respectively. In the options tab, I am checking the box next to Range contains column labels because my file does include a header column. I am getting very strange results when I try to execute the sort. For some reason, a large number of records are disappearing as a result of the sort. I am saving a separate file containing the sorted version of the records. See command log below comparing the line count of both the original and sorted versions: $ wc -l company-ethnicities.csv 55261 company-ethnicities.csv $ wc -l company-ethnicities-sorted.csv 30815 company-ethnicities-sorted.csv A whopping 24446 records are being deleted somehow... why is this? Does LibreOffice Calc's sort feature also remove duplicates? FYI: The reason I am not using the sort shell command instead is because it is also giving me problems (for some reason it's mangling the CSV file and putting a ton of records into a single field and yes, I did try setting LC_ALL to C) Does anyone know what might be causing this? I appreciate any help I can get on this one. RE: [libreoffice-users] Bug 62303 - Enhancement request: Set default install folder under Windows to \LibreOffice\
Dan, Would cause no change for Windows OS installations. You'd still have to do msiexec.exe /A administrative installation each of which registers its own LibreOffice user profile and minimal Windows registry entries. So, you can have one full installation, and multiple functional but not fully integrated /Administrative installations. Just as it has been. Re: [libreoffice-users] Help with sorting a CSV file using LibreOffice Calc
Hi David, what is the sensitivity of this file? Could you drop it onto the list via the nabble interface? https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/nabble-mailing-list-interface/ Cheers On 03/14/2013 01:38 PM, David Gulley wrote: Hi, I'm having a bit of a problem sorting records in a CSV file using LibreOffice Calc. RE: [libreoffice-users] Bug 62303 - Enhancement request: Set default install folder under Windows to \LibreOffice\
The Wiki notes on doing the administrative installation are at this link., Along with a link to Florian Reisinger's LibreOffice Server Installation GUI extension for doing parallel administrative installs while avoiding Windows command line and msiexec.exe. Currently for Windows OS's only. https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Installing_in_parallel#Administrativ_Installation: Florian will have to address any issues of a non-versioned default installation folder on his installer extension. But should not be much of a problem. RE: [libreoffice-users] Put LibreOffice as unedited document viewer only
Open the document that you want to make read-only. Click the File | Save As ... menu. On the Save As change the name if you want to keep the editable version separate. If not, leave the name and location the same. On the Save As dialog, check the Save with Password. (Don't worry, that will be modified in the next step.) Click Save on the Save As dialog. When the Set Password dialog opens, *do* *not* enter a password. Instead, click the More Options Under the File sharing password part of the expanded dialog: 1. Check Open file read-only 2. Enter a password to allow editing. 3. Confirm the password. Now click OK on the Set Password dialog. This will prevent direct editing of the file. This is not fool-proof. It is possible to overcome the read-only condition without knowing the password: 1. Material can be selected and copied to the clip-board. 2. The document can be Saved As to another file, and that copy will not be read-only. (I just confirmed all of this with LibreOffice 3.6.4.3 on Windows XP SP3.) - Dennis -Original Message- From: jathan [mailto:jathanblack...@gmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, March 13, 2013 17:51 To: users@global.libreoffice.org Subject: Re: [libreoffice-users] Put LibreOffice as unedited document viewer only [ ... ] An apology for some ambiguity in my explanation. That I want to do with LibreOffice is use it in read-only mode by default in place of edit function as odfviewer: http://opendocumentfellowship.com/odfviewer, pptview for powerpoint presentations or Evince or Adobe Reader for PDF documents. That is to say that no document can be opened for editing without assigning permissions previously in LibreOffice, only use it as a ODF documents viewer. Thanks.
