Since there is a newer version (4.4.4.3) available, I downloaded and installed it. However, I now have under (Mint) Menu - Office TWO Libreoffice items each (Writer, Calc etc.). In the newer version I am not able to modify / install an extensions. I get errors like: Error while installing extension Alternative searching. The error message is: an error occurred during file opening The extension will not be installed. Error reading data from the Internet. Server error message: Could not read status line: Connection reset by peer. General Internet error has occurred. Somehow I suspect, the old package gets in the way (this kind of trouble with extensions has NEVER happened on any computer with ANY OS before) and I would like to remove it ... but don't know how. Software Manager and Synaptic Package Manger show only ONE version of LibreOffice: 4.4.4.3. Is there a trick to do this? What are the chances this will solve the extension problem? I am also wondering why the newer version did not replace the older one. Thank you. Is possible to achieve that task or need to look for an alternative way to find out? Regards in advance and wish you all have a very nice 2013 beggining. Are you using Calc to do this? If not what are you using? How are you setting up your calculations? When you created the time format, how did you do it? (I need a step by step description.) I opened Calc and formated column A with HH:MM:SS.000 in the Format code box. Then I clicked the green check. What I saw in the Format list was 13:37:46.000. Then I entered times in A1 and A2. Finally I entered =A1-A2 in A3. I got an answer in the format I had created for column A. Hi Dan, thanks for the quick response I found the problem, my locale setting does not recognize the '.' as decimal separator. So, replacing it witch a ',' did the trick. :-) -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

On Mon, May 14, 2012 at 7:27 PM, webmaster-Kracked_P_P webmas...@krackedpress.com wrote: Were you one the 2nd page when you tried to add the footer? Yes, of course! I even just tried again to be sure. Was there some odd/even page formatting controls enabled? No, not that I see. I had turned off the footer on that one page specifically. Why you are having the problem may be some portion of the coding that sees the odd pages with footers and then will not allow you to create/edit ones on the even pages. I do not think that it is an odd / even problem. I specifically removed that footer from the single page. Oin fact, I think that I had to give the page a custom style. I just checked Format - Page - Organizer and I see that the page has name No Footer. I cannot seem to change it to the default style, though. If I remove the name then I get a message that the name is already in use. And none of the options on that page set the page to the default style. I currently do not use 3.5.x. I use 3.4.6 on Ubuntu 10.04/GNOME and 12.04/MATE. I should try it now that it is at .3, but will stick with 3.4.6 for a bit longer on my default Ubuntu 10.04LTS desktop. How about this, as a work around for now: do a Edit/Select All and copy the document. Then, while the original document is open, to a File/New/Text Document and then enable the footers option. Then paste the text to the new document and deal with the footers. This should work. If it does not, then there must be some problem in the LO version itself. Actually, I tried that but 1) I would like to learn to use LO properly, and 2) this page has some killer tables that are difficult to copy. Re: [libreoffice-users] ePub?
Even if you use this extension, the results you get depends upon the complexity of the original document. A simple text document ought to convert well. My documents contain text, figures in frames, tables, and two different types of lists. I have to use another program, Sigil, designed to edit ePUB documents to get the results that I want. As an example, the following link contains two files named Introducing Base (ODT file at the top of the list; ePUB at the bottom of it): http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/base-guide/draft-lo3.4. I did not use writer2epub. Instead, I used Calibre for the conversion from ODT to ePUB and the Sigil to do quite a bit of editing. Both of these programs are open source. (Feel free to download the ODT version of Introducing Base and then use writer2epub to convert it to ePUB. Then compare the difference.) I just did a simple test. I had a simple text document containing only several paragraphs that were first line indented that I converted using writer2epub. The first line indented paragraph style has a setting for the amount of indention, but the conversion did not include this setting. To get really good results converting ODT documents to ePUB, you need to understand styles and xhtml. (The underlying files for a ePUB document are written in xhtml.) It also takes a considerable amount of time to edit the xhtml to give the document the quality you want it to have. I had no need to create epub files but it's always good to have information from someone that if have done :-) --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Escuelas Libres :: Porque la educación es mucho mejor cuando es libre www.escuelaslibres.org.ar --- LiberTICs Cooperativa Ltda. www.libertics.com.ar --- Para entrenar, cualquier programa sirve. Re: [libreoffice-users] exported PDF file size
I was wondering how this has gone so far? Have you been able to get significant reductions? Pdf itself is a compressed format so it might be possible to simply increase the compression rate although that might significantly reduce quality. I sometimes open pdf in gimp and re-save as gif but again there is sometimes a loss of quality and anyway it might well not be appropriate for what you need. If the 20Mb size is inconvenient for email or posting onto a website then perhaps a different metod of transferring the file might be better? Usb-stick, memory card, Cd, perhaps one of those tiny business card Cds, and then normal postage? Hi Tom, I've been playing around with formats trying to get a significant file size reduction but just a few kb in some files. I have been watching this thread and have to ask the obvious question. Are the pictures sized to the desired size before inserting into the document? If not try that. I have found that can make a huge difference. I know many people keep pictures in very high resolutions which is fine, but if you just put a large picture into the document and resize it there it still takes up the full storage size of the original so thus makes very large documents which translate into large PDFs. Hi almost all of them are screenshots, but not full screen images just a menu or a bar for instance Likely they are not too large, but have you looked at their actual sizes to verify their size? Hi All, I have also been watching this thread with interest. For comparison, after much testing and manipulation I have been able to get quite respectable PDF files which illustrate ~40 high resulotion screen images. The PNG files, which show various tasks, range from 5KB upto 189.6 KB. Together they total 2.9 KB. These images were created using Shutter using default settings. Merged with a relatively small HTML file of 43KB, they merge to a 2MB PDF (note the PNG are converted to JPG). This process is done outside LO but illustrates that image rich files can be created that can be presented in relatively small PDF. Another example, using LO... 6.8 MB ODT file with detailed high resolution maps could be compressed to a 2.6MB PDF file. I could of made the resulting PDF smaller by sacrificing map quality but decided that this was a good balance between size and image clarity. On a side note - experimentation has shown that tables can cause file bloat more than some image types. Experiment with empty files to see what gets the best result. When creating technical reports I always insert an image twice as large as the size they will be presented in the report and allow 60% compression when creating the PDF. This seems to be a good combination. Nice tips Simon thanks --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Escuelas Libres :: Porque la educación es mucho mejor cuando es libre www.escuelaslibres.org.ar --- Para entrenar, cualquier programa sirve. Re: [libreoffice-users] exported PDF file size
I think the only thing that can make an effective difference is ro reduce JPG compression and the image resolution in the PDF Options screen But you should test some different values to find out one setup that fits your needs and keep your images readable. tried that but snapshots become unreadable, too blurry even with 95% quality compression ratio --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Escuelas Libres :: Porque la educación es mucho mejor cuando es libre www.escuelaslibres.org.ar --- Para entrenar, cualquier programa sirve. Re: [libreoffice-users] exported PDF file size
Hi :) I tend to save pictures in 3 different formats to see which gives the best result for the least size. I would always keep a copy of the original. Gif tends to be about 1/10th the size of jpgs or pngs but it doesn't work well on smoothly changing shades so some of the pictures on pages 15, 17, 19, 20, 26, 57, 79, 81, 111, 116, 120, 127, 135, 136 and 139 might not work well but all the rest will probably be better as gifs. To change formats in Ubuntu just install gimp I've got it and use Save As ... the change the file-ending from .jpg (for example) to .gif. Sometimes png is lighter-weight or sometimes jpg although usually those 2 formats tend to be better for photos. Png tends to be higher quality than jpg but it is also often lighter-weight. Not always tho which is why i try all 3 before committing myself to 1. Note that just changing the format of an image can cause it to degrade a bit or even a lot and changing the entire document to pdf can cause further errors to creep into images. At the moment all your images looked fine to a quick squint test. Do you have all the separate images available to work from? Can you create a new folder for testing different formats? will play with that thanks --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Escuelas Libres :: Porque la educación es mucho mejor cuando es libre www.escuelaslibres.org.ar --- Para entrenar, cualquier programa sirve. Hy Everyone! I'm new here, don't know how this mailing list works, so sorry in advance for every stupidity from me. I'd like to ask if the libreoffice developers are planning to make a GUI like the one used in Office 2007/2010? I like that style quite much and I find it much more useful than any before. Or because not everyone likes it, it could be an optional GUI, or maybe a plugin or extension. Ok. I manually imported an image. I then stretched it to take up the full size of the slide. I then sent to back. I saved it and re-opened it and it appears now. However, in my mind, we shouldn't have to do it that way. It's a pain and not very intuitive. We should be able to just change the background on a slide by slide basis. Re: [libreoffice-users] Problem with Impress.
So are you saying not to replace the background on those slides but instead import the image as a picture and then send it to back? as I said on previous message my problem was related to master pages, in that case setting a different background on each master page didn't work. But importing the images and then send them to back did. So, give it a try and tell us. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Escuelas Libres :: Porque la educación es mucho mejor cuando es libre http://www.escuelaslibres.org.ar/ --- Para entrenar, cualquier programa sirve. Daniel How are installing LIbreoffice? From the Ubuntu helpfiles https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+question/147517 They recommended installing through terminal the first time using the following instructions: Open a terminal from Applications→Accesories→Terminal and copy and paste the rows below please copy a row a time then press enter: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install libreoffice-gnome libreoffice-pdfimport libreoffice-presentation-minimizer sudo apt-get install libreoffice-presenter-console libreoffice-report-builder-bin mozilla-libreoffice give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LibreOffice I used these instructions for a Ubuntu 10.10 derivative (Pinguy) and had no problems. Hi Jay I was omitting the first step, remove openoffice. So after apt-get purge openoffice* everything works like a charm --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Escuelas Libres :: Porque la educación es mucho mejor cuando es libre http://www.escuelaslibres.org.ar/ --- Para entrenar, cualquier programa sirve. Re: [libreoffice-users] Problem with Impress.
I posted this before but haven't seen an answer in awhile so I'm doing it again. I hope this is the right place to report issues. Perhaps I'm just not using the program correctly. I made a slideshow presentation using the basic default theme. I changed the background to a single jpg graphic I found which was applied to the whole thing. However, I wanted to change the background to something else for two slides. I changed the background on those two slides and told it not to apply it to the whole presentation. I saved the presentation. Even though I saved it, when I opened my presentation later it did not save the backgrounds on those two slides. It changed the backgrounds back to the master background. How can I get that to save? Hi Troy I had a similar problem using master pages Ismael Fanlo from spanish community found the solution[1]. Where you need a different background pictures must be inserted and then, arrange send to back. hope that helps, regards [1] http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/es/users/msg00060.html --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Escuelas Libres :: Porque la educación es mucho mejor cuando es libre http://www.escuelaslibres.org.ar/ --- Para entrenar, cualquier programa sirve.
