FWIW that link is unusable for me. As are each of the others below. They
all take me to
https://help.libreoffice.org/latest/en-US/text/swriter/main.html

which sits there apparently constantly reloading the page. This is
using FF 115.11.0esr with the NoScript add-on that is set to disable
scripting on 'new' sites such as this one is to my browser.

wget appears to fetch and save the correct new_help.html but I haven't
investigated to see what FF finds so objectionable.

Ami/Chris

If the problem occurs with Thunderbird as well as with LibreOffice then
the problem is not with LO, but most likely in your desktop
environment. So you need to take your problem to your distro's mailing
list or forum rather than an LO mailing list.

Because a previous version works, and they don't want to leave

Why are you top-posting a new post instead of responding to what
aguador wrote? Please learn email etiquette (and bug reporting
etiquette!)

And why are you ignoring the suggestion, given that is what is already
posted as a workaround in the bug report you linked to? If it won't
work for you, you need to explain why.

Indeed, I wasn't even aware that the concept existed until I read this

It's an 8-page document and opens exactly as I would expect with each
page shown above the next page. I'm not sure how else to expect a
document to be shown?

If you can see the whole document, it sounds like you need to adjust
the zoom level (View Menu/Zoom) and choose Entire Page or somesuch.

I found one 5 pages long at visitengland and one 3 pages long at

[libreoffice-users] how to remove wasted space on a graph

2023-07-02 Thread Dave Howorth
I'm trying to draw a graph in LO calc for the first time. It's a time
series so very wide and not too high. I've managed to draw a graph that
is roughly what I want but there's a lot of wasted space at the left
and right ends (before and after the data). The data covers a fortnight
(i.e. 14 days) but the graph shows two blank days before the graph and
another two days after it. How can I reduce or eliminate that wasted
space?

(There's a lot of wasted space above and below the graph too but that's
not so important)

Also, is it possible to make the graph wider than the screen so that it
needs a horizontal scroll bar, as a separate feature to scrolling the
whole spreadsheet window?

TIA, Dave

Easier yes but a lot less helpful. It doesn't help anybody understand

In addition to all the other good suggestions, you might want to check
whether there is a backup of it. On my computer everything is under
~/.config/libreoffice and there are many files in a backup directory a
couple of levels down from there. You can check whether backups are
enabled using the Tools/Options/'Load/Save'/General menu/dialog and you
can check the exact place in Tools/Options/Libreoffice/Paths

In addition to what everybody else has already offered I'd ask why you
think you need a template? Has the GP asked for some particular format
of spreadsheet? How will they use the information after you submit it?

That doesn't sound very sensible. What if I'm writing a document that
includes text in an L-R language as well as text in an R-L language?
(both horizontal). Maybe one included as a quote in the other?

As Johnny says, we probably need more information to help. #VALUE
normally means that the number is too big to fit in the space it is
allowed. You should be able to see the value by selecting the cell and
looking at the contents in the display above the top of the sheet. Or
make the cell bigger, or reduce the font size :)

There seem to be some problems with typos, or perhaps language
problems. I assume (always dangerous!) that 'bigs' means 'bugs' but
what does 'still version' mean? Also, in the reference (2) (BTW it is
usual to use [] for references rather than ()) there's no mention of
bugs apart from a link to another page, so I have no idea what is meant.

Given the apparent language problems, it is perhaps better to spell
things out in more detail rather than choose the shortest possible
words and heavy abbreviation.

I don't think that does what I want. I would have to select every cell
that has a $ amount, and no other cells, and apply the £ currency. But
that also might change the other format aspects - commas and number of
figures after the decimal point and so forth.

What I'm looking for is something that I can apply to the whole sheet,
and that just changes $ to £ wherever it occurs.

[libreoffice-users] changing currency in a spreadsheet

2022-04-24 Thread Dave Howorth

I have a financial spreadsheet that was designed in the USA but I live
in the UK. Is there any way in LO to change all the cells that are
formatted as numeric $ amounts to be the same format but using the
equivalent numeric £ format instead?

I don't think there's any logic in the spreadsheet that depends on the
currency, it's just doing numerical calculations on the values. But it
would be easier to look at if it was in £ rather than $ everywhere!

Cheers, Dave

What investigation have you done? Why do you think the problem is with
LO rather than with mojolicious or somewhere in between?

Also, what is runcmd()?

Steps I would be thinking of trying:
(1) add debugging prints to the mojolicious code so you can see exactly
what arguments are passed on each occasion
(2) for some case where the problem occurs run LO directly from the
command line with the same arguments and see if the problem occurs

Obviously it wouldn't be a good idea to expose an unpatched
vulnerability on a public bug reporting site. If that is what is being

Well that's the absolute basis of the whole conversation, so that's
absolutely the first thing I did!

Don't care. They all behave the same or similar.

No I suggested it was not a bug and that it did work exactly as
everybody else expected it would and as documented apparently (I didn't
check the documentation :) You needed to actually read what I wrote
after that one sentence and try to understand the whole message.

The documentation thinks what's a bug, exactly? Alan claimed that if
you try to print as a PDF then everything gets printed, without any
choice. You appear to be stating that the documentation coincides with
reality, which is exactly the ooposite and what I said. Thus what Alan
claimed is a bug is NOT a bug. Or are we somehow at cross purposes?

I don't think that's a bug. If you select Export as PDF, you are shown
a dialog box that offers a choice of exporting the whole spreadsheet or
a selected region etc. Similarly you can Print to File if you want
another way to print just part of a spreadsheet to a PDF file.

I don't believe that '>'and '<' used as operators are regular
expressions. They are parts of more general 'criteria', which the
documentation

implies are 'wild cards'. But searching the documentation doesn't reveal
any definition or even explanation of what a wild card is :(

So I think the answer to your question is that the definition of
regexes supported is indeed
 but
that the particular criterion you are interested in is not a regex and
thus not documented there. Perhaps somebody else knows where such
criteria ARE documented?

Don't take it personally. It's just a quirk of list netiquette. It's
considered rude to post a private message to somebody as a result of a
list postings, unless specifically invited. Plus by posting it to the
list Brian makes sure that any other people who were also in any doubt
about what had gone before also have the same new information to
clarify their thinking. So there's no criticism of you intended.

He perhaps could have chosen slightly better phrasing to avoid
irritating you, but such events are part of life on a mailing list,
where not everybody has perfect skills in written English plus a
considerate personality.

Maybe it is worth posting a sample presentation that works for you

so you could test his presentation to see whether it works or not for

Apparently it is possible, since the OP originally stated:

"The original file is so formatted that there are font settings for
English and Japanese.
When I work at home (right now) I select the relevant columns and
change the language setting to German."

For that to be the case, the original file must encode the language for
individual columns.

Why on earth would you think 'kill' might mean changing a list address?

It means reducing the number of users of it to zero. i.e. the number of
users who use the mailing list and do not use the forum. The mailing
list will cease to exist as an entity. It will fall off its perch.

In my experience it becomes a way of forcing the email users to use the
web forum instead. The only purpose the email interface serves in
practice is notifying of web posts.

Even a bridge as Sophie suggests is likely to kill the mailing list
IMHO.

I seriously hope not! Discourse works OK as a forum but the mailing

Sorry, I haven't really been following, but is the distinction between
an 'en' locale and an 'en.US' locale important; and why do some
dictionary locales use '_' as a separator and others use '.'?

I can only speak for myself, although I suspect others also think
similarly. I prefer the medium of mailing lists to that of forums in
general. It may be to do with previous experience and age in general.
So I use mailing lists whenever they are available, and forums only if
I must. Hence I subscribe to this list, and ask questions here when I
need to and otherwise use a search engine to find relevant pages on the
web, which might include hits on the forums.

FWIW, the 1.2 spec is still available free from
https://docs.oasis-open.org/office/v1.2/

I don't know if the words are everywhere identical with the ISO
version * but certainly the words you quote are the same.

* Does anybody know whether they are the same? The Oasis document has a
section at the begininning prohibiting changes to the document and
prohibiting removal of that section, so I would hope so!

The ISO version is also publically available from
https://standards.iso.org/ittf/PubliclyAvailableStandards/index.html

I suppose you must be talking about the cost of a paper copy from ISO.
I expect you're free to print a downloaded copy if you wish.

What do you mean by 'the maximum value' of a cell?

It sounds like you think cells have a history of their contents?
That's not the case. A cell has a value. If you then enter a different
value in the cell, it has the new value. It does not 'remember' the old
value. (Notwithstanding the ability of the UI to 'undo' editing -
that's something completely different).

So the entire notion of the 'maximum' value of a cell is meaningless.

Since I believe such underlines were implemented on Unix/Linux before
Windows, it's disappointing to me that the functionality isn't there in
the Linux implementation.

And in this case where there's a functional difference rather than a
visual difference, it would be nice to see that documented.

But thanks for explaining the situation. PS I think you mean R key

I think that page 334 describes master documents (suffix .odm) rather
than master templates (suffix .otm), which I see appear in the save
dialog as an option, so I'm still confused (or at least I was until I
read Regina's answer).

I'm confused 'otm' does not appear in that book? (Whatever a .OTM is)

If you want an underline, as opposed to a border, then if you edit the
style and choose Font Effects then the colour of the underline can be
chosen immediately to the right of the underline style.

The underlining only underlines the text itself. To 'underline' the
whole row, you need to set a border.

Why would you expect the formatting for a Header to be within a Table
properties?

Why didn't you select the header then styles/edit and then choose
an appropriate border? That appears to work as you wish.

I agree with those sentiments. I'm in the UK and Draw doesn't offer me
any choices I'm interested in, so I simply won't use it - it's not fit
for purpose IMHO. Why can't I use the same formats as you?

I've heard, but not experienced, that a Danish locale may be quite
useful, if the urge to use the program is stronger than common sense.

Traditionally monospace fonts have serifs becuase it makes it easier to
balance the spacing of the letters and so make the text easier to read.

Decoration of the digit 1 and the letter lower-case l is to avoid the
confusion between the two. Much as the various features used to
distinguish between the digit 0 and the letter upper-case O.

My copy of LO under Tools/Options/LibreOffice/Fonts has a dropdown for
Automatic or a particular font, and it has a check box for
Non-proportional fonts that is set, and which I assume it is using to
populate the dropdown, since I see only monospaced fonts in the list.

If you have these settings and it has selected a font that is not
'Non-proportional' then I suggest you investigate to determine whether:

- some proportional font has an incorrect attribute, causing it to be
  included in the list, or

- LO is ignoring your setting

In both cases a bug report would seem to be appropriate, but where it
goes depends on the diagnosis.

Every extra field added to a record creates another dimension in data
space. So you just need to add a column called, say, year that can take
each of the values 'A', 'B', 'C' or 'D' and then add that field to your
SELECT statement.

Sorry, I don't know very much about this subject, but AFAICT you are
blaming an innocent party here. The DMARC standard is, AIUI, an
ill-thought out disaster as far as mailing lists are concerned and the
blame should therefore be attached to mail providers such as Yahoo who
apply such a flawed standard without due consideration.

To me, it's more an indication to avoid Yahoo and its ilk than any
criticism of this or any other list experiencing such problems.

Note that the family name may not always be the last word. There are
various cultures where the family name comes at a different position in
the order, and even in English culture the family name may consist of
more than one word.

Or keep the two numbers in separate columns as before, but insert
another column just containing '/' in between them. It depends what the
result is to be used for.

Thanks.
(a) please don't send private copies of your replies to me - I am
subscribed to the list
(b) I doubt I'll be able to help you but as I said I doubt anybody will
be able to help unless you state the actual error message you're seeing.

PS personally I'm not going to click on a link and enable javascript
to download a file, let alone load the downloaded file into LO and
enable macros. I can be just as paranoid as you :)

FWIW, in private email you said "Click Next or move to the Last tab
then Validate, that's where the error pop ups." That suggests to me
that the error is in macro code that runs when you click Validate. You
might want to extract that code and look for problems, but unless you
tell us the error message as well as post that code, nobody can help
you.

Maybe if you stated which revenue service it is, and exactly what the

[libreoffice-users] confused about hidden cells

2019-11-02 Thread Dave Howorth
I have received a spreadsheet, which I've opened as a .xlsx and then
saved as a .ods. It has some hidden rows that I'd like to be able to
see. So I selected the entire sheet and went to the Format/Rows menu
but the Show menu item is greyed out. How can I unhide the hidden rows?

I note that a lot of the spreadsheet is protected cells. Does that have
something to do with it? (and if so what? :)

I'm running LO 6.2.6.2 on openSUSE Leap 15.0

TIA, Dave

Java is a computer language. If you want to run programs written in it
on a computer you need at least the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). If
you want to write programs in it, you need extra files and must install
the Java Development Kit (JDK) instead (it contains the JRE).

To complicate matters, some programs need the JDK instead of the JRE to
run. It seems that the PlugIn is one such. It may be that you have the
JRE installed on your computer and that the computer is reporting this
as having 'Java' installed in order to simplify things for ordinary
people. If so, you need to find and install the JDK instead. (and
whoever decided that saying 'Java' instead of 'Java Runtime
Environment' was simpler and better needs shooting in the head :)

I'm afraid I can't tell you how to do that because I'm not familiar
with Macs.

There's nothing strange about having multiple desktops installed. Most

So it seems you're suggesting a different menu structure under

Ah, this is the first time that you made it clear that the problematic
behaviour is specific to LO and not to the same keys in other
applications. (at least, the first time you made it clear enough for me
to understand).

What output does xev give when you press those keys with the various

Not true. Copy does not have a universal accelerator unfortunately,
sometimes it is Shift+Ctrl+C or other things. So I sometimes use the
menu in applications that I'm not completely familiar with.

Also what OS?

In addition, can you post an example of the text/document that you
cannot format tabs for somewhere? Perhaps it is a data-dependent
problem, since tab stops work as you expect for other people including
me.

In mine (6.1.3.2) either works :)

But I get an unusable window to choose characters from if I follow
Budge's instructions. All the characters, and the window itself are far
too large and overlap horizontally. Vertically the window is taller
than my screen and not resizable.

If that occurs with a current version, I'd think a bug report was
appropriate. It's a surprisingly glaring bug.

That's a crazy idea that will lead to all kinds of obscure errors. Far
better to unconditionally return an error, IMHO.

Well, what I am saying then is that it is gmail's interface that is

Thanks, but this answers itself. If my screen or window has less
pixels, then why create more objects and try to represent them? The
chart software should be sampling the data appropriately to the
resolution.

And sure if I want to explore the detail, then I should be able to
expand a section of the X-axis. I'm thinking of something like the
graph module in emoncms, which handles this task with reasonable speed.

Correct, I'm using a line chart (i.e. the data I have are a number of
time series). Thanks for the info about how it behaves.

[libreoffice-users] what's the best way to make charts of spreadsheet data

2019-01-02 Thread Dave Howorth

I just made a chart of some data in LibreOffice Calc and was
disappointed both by the process (very slow) and by the results
(apparent lack of ability to modify the view).

I've used spreadsheets and LO Calc specifically sporadically over the
years to make calculations but wouldn't call myself an expert. I can't
remember the last time I tried to make a chart.

So I'm wondering if I've missed something in LO that would help me have
a better experience with this chart, or if there are better tools to
use to draw charts from spreadsheet data.

I'm running Version 6.1.3.2 of LibreOffice (actually the openSUSE
build for Leap 15.0). I'm running a machine with an i5-4460 CPU @
3.20GHz and 8 GB main memory. It's normally fast enough for whatever I
want to do.

My spreadsheet data is in columns. Column A is the dates and column B
is the times. Then ten columns of humidity data and eleven columns of
temperature data. There are currently just over 5000 rows of samples.

Making the chart was extremely slow. Every time I changed the Name of a
line of the chart I had to wait whilst it cycled through several steps
to make the change. Initially when I removed some empty columns from
the data range, it took an age to do so. etc.

Now I've created the chart and got some reasonable lines across it, but
what I hope are the dates and times along the X axis are just a mess and
I've no idea how to make them display usefully.

The Y-axis is reasonable from 0 to 120, although it would be nice to
trim the blank space at the top a bit, since the data can't exceed 100.

I haven't found any way to select individual points on the chart to
display the detailed value of that point or all the values at that
time. Nor do I see a way to temporarily hide individual data lines to
more clearly see other particular lines, for example.

If there's any way to do these things with an LO chart, and to speed it
up, I'd be grateful for any pointers. Or if there are better options
out there that can read .ods or .csv and display charts, that would also
be interesting.

TIA, Dave

As far as I can tell the problem is fairly fundamental. LibreOffice
uses a definition of 'significant figure' that is different to that
usually used in the scientific world. Specifically, they don't regard a
0 after a decimal point as significant :(

See https://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Number_Format_Codes

I'd suggest you have two easy options:
(1) use a 0.000 format and search using the formatted display option
(2) Display the frequencies in kHz so they are all whole numbers

Note that you could display the numbers twice in two columns. Once in a
column that's easy for you to read, and again in a column that's
formatted to be searched. The search column could be hidden.

PS I was going to suggest:
(3) Use scientific format to specify the significant digits
(e.g. ##0.000E+00)
