I found a "disappointing" solution, by uninstalling 7.6.4.1 and
installing 7.5.9.2so now opening Hybrid PDFfiles in Writer works
perfectly, even with my original profile. Not that I have any problem

Are there any issues with running the latest version of LO on a Win 7

None that I have encountered, running version 7.6,2.1 on both a Win 7

the same as on Win 10 and 11.

Upon reflection, I think you should file a bug report, because there is
no justifiable reason why a document/spreadsheet style should be
prevented from overriding global preferences. In fact it defeats and
contradicts the software's styles concept.

There is no conversion of the original file when you open a non-native
file type and Libre|Office does not have the facility to redact or
delete documents. Possibly, what you did was to open a .docx file then
save it in .odt format, which means your original .docx file is still
somewhere on your computer. If your original .docx file has been
deleted/redacted, then you would have to have done that with another
program (eg. your OS file manager). If you are saying that the new .odf
document does not render with exactly the same appearance as the
original .docx file it could be that the original had a complex
structure that the save/export filter was unable to accurately translate
it with the same appearance as the original. Unfortunately, the newer MS
formats are something of a moving target for the creators of our
save/export filters and there can be no guarantee of a a perfect
translation.

your OS (Operating System - eg. Linux, Mac, Solaris, Windows, etc.) and

Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc - Can't highlight a column and set background shading

2023-07-02 Thread DaveB

Hi David

Can't recall ever seeing a "Highlight" button in Calc, I think you mean
that you previously added the "Background Color" to the toolbar with the
"Customise Toolbar" facility.

I can't offer much to help you restore your original settings, other
than to rename/delete your user profile (last resort) but as an alternative:

1. Click the column header.
2. Right click in the highlighted area to open the context menu.
3. Select "Format cells" from the context menu.
Keyboard alternative to steps 2 & 3 is Ctrl + 1
4. In the "Format Calls" dialog click the "Background" tab.
5. Click the "Color" button and choose the required color.
Obviously click OK.

Hope that helps.

Been using Open Office and then LibreOffice since 1993.  Used to use
Bugzilla occasionally in the past.
. . . This is my first post to this mailing list, to seek support from
the community.

I have a spreadsheet I've been using for 3 years.  I modify it
occasionally.

I have previously selected a column and clicked the "background
highlight" icon with color of yellow selected - that would turn the
entire column yellow - it no longer works!

I suspect I "thrashed around" and changed something about the Toolbars
that has caused this problem.

I just uninstalled and re-installed Libre Office on my Windows 7
Professional desktop computer - LibreOffice 7.5.4.2.  I did this to get
away from any "unintended" changes I may have made.  It did not fix any
of the problems noted in the next paragraph.

I also seem to have changed how the toolbars display:  They have the
"system blue" background color, the icons seem larger or different, and
the "background highlight" tool seems to be different - has black "ab"
over yellow line.  See attached screen shot.
*_. . . I can no longer highlight a cell or column of cells and change
the background to yellow._**_

_**_
_**_This is the problem I am reporting and for which I am asking for
help._**_

Urgency:  I am "dead in the water" on my number one priority task.

Calc Guide 6.2. We (The Documentation Team) always take captures of the
guide we are writing about. As much as we would like to, we cannot cover
every possible visual difference between each operating system.

The conclusion to this thread is that Ctrl+- opens the dialog in both
Linux and Windows (cannot speak for macOS), but the D key only functions
as described by Brian under Windows, which is why Linux users don't see
the underline. Although less convenient, Linux users can use the up and
down arrow keys can be used to select the required option.

Hi Stephan,

Thanks for taking the time to reply, but as I said in response to Regina
and others later in this thread: "Today I started the computers
(Win 10-2004 x64 & Linux Kernel 5.8 x64) running LO 7.0.1.2, opened the
odt file and the relative links worked perfectly." I am unable to
discover or explain why it did not work initially.

My issue now is to find a way to get those relative links working in an
exported PDF copy of the file. I have tried several different export
options, but clicking the links in the PDF file always returns the "File
 not found" error.

Best Regards
Dave

PS. I am subscribed to the list so the cc isn't necessary. ;)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Create a relative hyperlink to file?

2020-09-20 Thread DaveB
Hi Regina & all,

Even though I was following instructions to the letter I must have been
doing something wrong wrong yesterday. Today I started the computers
(Win 10-2004 x64 & Linux Kernel 5.8 x64) running LO 7.0.1.2, opened the
odt file and the relative links worked perfectly. I am still unsure of
how to explain the appearance of absolute paths over the links when
writing up the user guides, but that is a different issue.

Having got the odt file working, I am now looking for a way to get those
relative links working in an exported PDF copy of the file. I have tried
several different export options, but clicking the links in the PDF file
always returns the "File not found" error.
Any thoughts or suggestions about this would be welcome.

Thanks for all your help.

Best Regards
Dave

Hi Robert,

Many thanks for taking the time to reply.

If you look at my original post and my reply to Regina the odt file and
the hyperlinked files are are already in the same directory, so I see no
reason why moving them to another location would change anything.

It really doesn't matter what appears in content.xml. The critical point
is that keyboard Ctrl+click on the hyperlink in the odt file generates a
"not an *absolute* URL" error.

Sorry if I have misunderstood or misinterpreted the explanation you and
Regina have kindly given, but I need to clearly explain this for
inexperienced users in the next edition of the official LibreOffice
Writer Guide.

Hi Regina,

Many thanks for taking the time to reply.

The odt document and the linked files are all in the same local directory.

I open the hyperlink dialog either by the menu, toolbar or keyboard
Ctrl+K. I do not manually enter the link. In the hyperlink dialog I
select the "Open File" button to the right of "Document > Path", see:
http://www.mediafire.com/view/33hc7qwbjtc7dlp/Hyperlink_Dialog.png/file
Selecting the file from the open file dialog ALWAYS adds the full
(ABSOLUTE) path to the hyperlink in the document.

Maybe I have misunderstood or misinterpreted your explanation, but I
cannot find anything in the hyperlink dialog that provides an option to
create a RELATIVE hyperlink to to another file.

I should add that part of my reason for asking this question is that if
I can get this to work it will form the basis of a section in the next
edition of our official Writer Guide, so so telling our readers to unzip
odt files is definitely not an acceptable option.

Thanks & Kind Regards
Dave

Thanks Krono, but this is way too complicated and inconvenient for the

Hi Philip,

Thanks for coming back on this. There was only ever one "TOC test.odt"
sample document, which had a title page "World's Most Amazing Book" and
a few "New Chapter" styled pages.

Thanks to Regina's explanation and your further clarification here, I
now understand the situation.

While it is IMO totally wrong to require the user to add ANYTHING to the
outline style generated content to obtain a working TOC, that is the way
it has been coded and we users just have to live with it.

Best Regards
Dave

Many thanks for the perfect explanation Regina.

While it's unclear why it was coded that way and is definitely not
intuitive, it does provide a solution.

When I have the time I will add a not to the on-line help and ask

check out the Getting Started and Writer Guides to ensure this point is
made clear in the next revisions.

When the Chapter Numbering dialog is first opened both the Before and

Look at my reply to Regina. My own invention is the word "Chapter" plus
a single space in the Before field.

Yes I am fully aware of how to create a TOC. However, I stumbled over
this issue when preparing a LibreOffice training session for a group of
novice authors and I wanted to work "by the book" so that they could
accurately use our help files and documentation for future reference.

I have unzipped both the origin documents that brought this issue to my
attention and the simplified example I created, but I have been unable
to find any issue with their internal structure.

I am having some difficulty working out what you mean by adding space
between the TOC and the (first line ?). Could I ask you to send me a
copy of your example file off list please?

onto the light_ambience.png It is so much nicer than the LO "battleship

I changed the directory and file name to exactly match yours.
My path =

No problem.

OK, so far.

Since I had changed my path and file name to exactly match yours, I
simply copied and pasted the above line into the edit field.
OK'd out of Expert Configuration and Options.

Not sure I fully understand what the above line means, but:

  * I tried immediately opening a new document. No persona.
  * I went back into Expert Configuration and my previous settings were
gone.
  * I again edited the settings and tried closing and restarting LO. No
persona.
  * Next, I went back into Expert Configuration and again edited the
settings, OK'd out of Expert Configuration and immediately when back
in again to find that my settings had already been lost.

If it had worked, it would have been a fantastically simple solution.
Maybe something has changed between your 5.4.6.2 and my 6.1.1.2 which
cases LO to ignore or drop Expert Configuration changes. Guess I will
just have to learn to love LO's boring "battleship grey" colors.

However, I thank you again for taking the time to try and help.

[libreoffice-users] Personas

2018-09-27 Thread DaveB
Hi Folks,

Firefox Personas (renamed Themes) no longer work in LO and there is a
proposal [1] to deprecate or replace them. However, I have 2 in my LO
profile on Windows, which I would like to have them in LO on a new Linux
install. I have copied the images into the equivalent Linux directory
and edited the advanced configuration file, but I cannot get LO under
Linux to show either of the personas. Obviously there is something else
it is necessary to configure.

Any thoughts or pointers would be welcome.

Hi Mike,

Not a daft question, but Draw might be a better choice for what you are
doing. To center align text boxes in Writer you need to first change the
anchoring. When you initially draw the text box it is, by default,
anchored to the paragraph, which allows the box to be manually
positioned anywhere on the page. Select "Anchor" from the right click
context menu and choose "As Character", then set the paragraph to be
center aligned.

Hope this helps.

Hi Peggy,

Assuming you are using some version of Windows, Look for a file called
swriter.exe

The historical reason for the leading "s" is that the original software,
on which today's code is based, was called StarOffice and the word
processor component was called StarWriter.

Hi Ian,

I don't know if it has already been mentioned, but if you want to get to
grips with styles and templates I recommend you download and read a copy
of Bruce Byfield's book "Designing with LibreOffice"
http://designingwithlibreoffice.com/. Don't be mislead by the title, IMO
it is one of the best sources of advice about using LibreOffice styles.
Another useful resource is the recently published LibreOffice 5.4 Writer
Guide
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications#LibreOffice_Writer_Guide
which includes some very good chapters on styles and templates.

Hope this helps.

It doesn't seem to make any difference if you leave the en_GB installed
or not, the en_US edition is recognised and used in both cases.

Not a big issue for me, I've been married to an American for many years,
so I can accommodate their "odd" terminology & spelling ;)

Brexit!!! Who in their right mind could approve of it. This nonsense has
created many problems for me personally, so I sure as don't approve.

Peter: I was using Win 7_x64 Ult. and Philip gave the information in the
subject line of his original post. I switched to a fully updated Win
10_x64 box and got the same failure as previously reported.

Mark: You have almost nailed the solution. It's not the interface
language that has to be set, it is setting the global Locale to English
(UK) that allows the en_GB Help to work as expected. Thank you.

I am experiencing the same issue. The SHA256 checked download of
LibreOffice_6.0.0_Win_x64_helppack_en-GB.msi installs without any
problem, but calling help (F1 or menu) returns the "Not Installed"
message, although Windows installed programs shows the en_GB Help Pack
as being installed.

The problem does not appear when the en_US Help Pack is installed.

After some considerable testing, I came to much the same conclusion and
installed 5.3.7.1 on the client's machine. Surprising how fast and
smooth it runs under XP on a ratty old single core Pentium.

IIRC there was agreement at a fairly recent ESC meeting that XP support
would be dropped, but I wasn't able to track down the minutes of that
meeting to know which was the first version it applied to.

Yes unpatched XP machines are a large attack vector, but when you see
the number of security updates MS rolls out for the XP POS edition each
month it's obvious that MS are really knocking themselves out to keep
that edition patched. There must be a fair number of heavyweight
corporate/government customers MS wants to keep on-side. Let's all hope
that MS are working even harder to keep the UK's "/Windows XP for
Warships/" fully patched http://bit.ly/2ynpmys Could get a bit exciting
to have hacked nuclear submarines popping off Trident missiles.

I've checked LO security advisories http://bit.ly/2ykHcCn and there
doesn't appear to be anything in 5.3.7.1 that might case my client any
major headaches. He has a regularly updated copy of MS Security
Essentials installed, plus a fairly solid firewall and intrusion
monitoring setup.

Couple of options:

 1. Command line or shortcut "--nologo"
See:

[libreoffice-users] Which was the last version of LO able to run on Win XP?

2017-10-13 Thread DaveB
Please let's not have discussions about MS having ended support for XP.
There are still an enormous number of machines out there running XP SP3
POS Ready 2009, which MS are still actively supporting. MS most recent
XP update (October 2017) added support for TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 to XP POS
Ready 2009, See Microsoft Secure Blog: http://bit.ly/2ylRGDo

I have successfully screwed up LO on a client's XP POS Ready machine (my
fault for not testing on a VM first), by installing LO 5.4.2 over the
previous 4.4.7.2 install. The 5.4 installer completes without any
complaint, gleefully removing the old version, but on start up the
splash screen flashes and soffice dies without a murmur. Would have been
nice if the devs had added the very simple system check call to
installer and blocked the install. Yes, the information is there for
anyone who wants to dig down into the release notes:
http://bit.ly/2yjj2Ir But how many users read software release notes or
EULAs? It's also about time we updated the misleading "/System
Requirements/" page http://bit.ly/2yh0SHo which still reads
"/LibreOffice on a Windows system are as follows: Microsoft _*Windows
XP*__*SP3*_, Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows
Server 2012, or Windows 10/".

Two questions:

 1. Which was the last version able to run on Win XP?
 2. Are there any known security issues with that version?

Thanks
