[libreoffice-users] Word won't open some .doc documents created in LO
I'm in a writers' critique group who distribute our monthly submissions in .doc format for the sake of a member who doesn't think his system can handle .docx. (But that's a different issue.) One of our members composes his submission in LO Writer and saves as .doc (which several of us do). But for some reason some of us are having trouble opening that person's submissions in M$ Word (although they open fine in LO Writer). Yet the member who just uses Word is not having trouble opening the .doc file. (I suspect he has an older version of Word, but it's hard to get that information from him.) When I create a .doc file in LO Writer, I don't have trouble opening it in Word. The member whose .doc files we can't open tells me he's using Libra Office 24.2 on Windows. (I assume he means LibreOffice.) It appears that's a later version than the 7.3 I'm using on Windows. So is this maybe a bug in 24.2? -- Eric Beversluis www.ericbeversluis.com 2x Honorable Mention--Writer's Digest Contest -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ Privacy Policy: https://www.documentfoundation.org/privacy
[libreoffice-users] How to show the original without markup in LO Writer
In MS Word there are options to show all changes ("All Markup"), to show what the result of all changes would be ("No Markup"), and to show the original--i.e., document as it was before any changes ("Original"). "All Markup" corresponds in LO Writer to checking "Show" in the track changes menu. "No Markup" corresponds in LO Writer to leaving "Show" unchecked. But I can't find how to view the original in LO Writer (what Word does with the "Original" option). Is there something I'm not seeing? I find it useful when tracking changes to look at the clean original on occasion rather than trying to visualize the original through all the markup. -- Eric Beversluis www.ericbeversluis.com 2x Honorable Mention--Writer's Digest Contest -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ Privacy Policy: https://www.documentfoundation.org/privacy
Re: [libreoffice-users] Printer not showing in LO print dialog
This doesn't seem to be an answer (it's not an absence of scroll bars--the printer is just not listed). The scroll bars are there once I touch base with the Printer page in Settings and then go back to LO. I'm not happy with "it is what it is." It seems rather to be a bug in how the print dialogue works. Either something in Fedora 39 or in this version of LO. (7.6.6.7 (x86_64). It doesn't happen, e.g., with Document Viewer or Text Editor, which suggests it's something in LO. On 4/2/24 13:58, Paul D. When I have a LO Writer document open and tell it to print, the dialog only shows the Brother MFC printer and not the Brother black laser printer. Then I open Setting->Printers. Re: [libreoffice-users] shrink size and font size of styles sidebar
I'm sorry to keep coming back to this thread, but I continue to have the mysterious random change in the "minimumwidth" setting. It happened again tonight. When I searched the registrymodification.xcu, the entry that was indicated below was not there. oor:name="MinimumWidth" oor:op="fuse">false I went into Tools -Options-Advanced-Open Expert Configuration, reset the minimumwidth value to 'false.' Now the entry is present in registrymodification.xcu. As nearly as I can tell, this is what happened: I opened an old .odt document. It did not have some of the newer styles I've created, so I opened a new document that used my current default template and copied the content of the old document into the new document. The minimumwidth setting for some reason changed to 'true' at this point. I could no long squeeze the sidebar in the new document to the width I wanted. There was no entry for "MinimumWidth" in registrymodification.xcu. I changed the setting under Tools-Options... to false. Now the sidebar is working the way I want it to again and the entry appears in registrymodification.xcu. So is this a bug such that if I open an old document it somehow changes the configuration for my newer documents? Or copying the content of the old document into a new document changes the configuration? I'm using LO 7.4.6.2/ LibreOffice Community on Ubuntu 20.04. Thanks. Re: [libreoffice-users] Customizing styles and keeping them in templates in Writer?
I was wondering about the same thing Philip mentions, but then I saw that when I opened a new document, all the custom styles where there. But then I realized that it's probably because there is already some dummy text in my template which appears in a new document--it helps me remember what's in the template. Without the dummy text, clicking on "All Styles" or "Custom Styles" is likely necessary. I hope that works for bunk3m. In the sidebar panel (Ctrl-F5) which displays the styles, I had never noticed the selector at the bottom which by default shows 'Applied styles'. With a new blank document, there'll only be a default paragraph style displayed. When I clicked on the drop-down list and selected 'All styles', there were all my custom styles. The only other thing I can think of is that there's some step in creating and saving the template that you're missing. Unfortunately neither the default or the report template kept the list styles or paragraph styles created in either. Re: [libreoffice-users] double-spacing within an outline
Here's a theory that a bit of testing seems to support: What if, when one hits 'return,' the 'block outline' style has not been applied because there's nothing on the new line. If then, one hits 'return' again, Writer is not longer following up on any particular style so it reverts to the default style. Tending to confirm this: typing just a blank space before hitting the second 'return' retains the 'block outline' style. The behavior of the toolbar 'ordered list' icon shows what's happening. When in 'block outline,' the icon for 'ordered list' is darkened. If I hit two 'returns' in a row, the 'no list' icon is darkened. Fn-F12 restores the 'ordered list' setting--the 'ordered list' icon is darkened again. On 12/16/22 12:54, Eric Beversluis wrote: I do have 'block outline' specified as next style. Re: [libreoffice-users] Keep losing my default template for LO Writer--found workaround.
I tried the techniques indicated (https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile) to create a new profile, but the templates problem was not corrected. When I open Manage Templates it shows my custom template but won't let me set it as the default template. When I click on my custom template it will open a document properly. So why can't I make it my default template? I checked the path for templates in Tools/Options and the path includes the folder that holds my template. (Which one would expect, since the template does show up in the Manage Templates dialogue.) I even replaced the profile with the profile from my backup from before I upgraded to 7.3* from 7.2*. That didn't solve the problem either. WORK-AROUND "SOLUTION": I had to open the template and then make believe I was creating a new template using "Save as Template." That gave me the option to set it as the default template (once I said it was OK to replace the existing template with that name). Obviously the upgrade did not save something but the problem wasn't with the profile. I've got a book-length document heavily formatted in LO writer, which I've exported to rtf. I'm trying to understand exactly what gets included in that new file. When I open it in WordPad on Windows it shows what I would expect an rtf document to look like--a continuous document, no page breaks, and minimal formatting. When I open it in LO on Linux, however, I get a strange output with some but not nearly all of the odt formatting that I assumed would be stripped out when saving as rtf. When I try to open it in WordPad in Wine, Wine freezes up. (Don't know if Wine is otherwise working properly, since I haven't really used it.) What I'm concerned about is what will happen when I try to import this rtf into Scrivener or use it to generate an epub version. So, again, my question is what all is included in that new rtf file and do I need to do anything to get a 'cleaner' rtf file. Thanks. Each row contains the customer name, the line item, amount, and rate at the end of the row, I put in payment and date. If I have more than one payment because the invoice was split then I just record outward In subsequent tabs, I manually make a copy of the invoice template, fill it in, making sure it matches the data in the entry line, print to PDF and email it. It is a royal pain in the butt but I only do two maybe three invoices a month so it's tolerable. However, since the pattern is predictable and repeatable, it should be possible to generate an invoice from one of my entry lines. I think at this point, I'm about ready to give up using Calc in word for anything more than filling in a form and doing all the calculations by hand on paper and pencil. That said, I still need to build a produce invoices and track when they were paid. Since your accountant told you to never touch a book keeping system again, that gets a little tricky. I'm hoping for something that lets me stay in the libreoffice ecosystem. To track income, a possible solution is a write document, that is changed according to function. I've attached an example to this email. File Properties Custom Properties is where to go to change most of the information in the document. * Replace Invoice with Pro-Forma Invoice, Quote, Receipt, Estimate, Statement or other appropriate * The item, and the price are changed in properties. # Use your standard price, for the pricing. # Change description in the pricing block, when you change the item. # Change quantity in the pricing block, for the specific client; There are three lines for discounts: * Two are for deducting specific dollar amounts; * One is for deducting a specific percentage; Then, if the correct tax rate is in the description field, it automatically calculates the appropriate tax, if the correct amount is listed in the description field. (The accompanying template is wrong. Tax is not 97.5%, but 0.975%. ). Tracking number is for SH, if needed. Then you have a line for any deposit / down payment that was made/were made. Put this amount is the item column. The next line is how much was previously paid. This excludes any deposit/down payment that was made. This also excludes any payments made today. (There is no easy way to ensure that no errors are inadvertently made here. For some reason, that cell doesn't automatically add numbers together.) The next line is how much was paid today. Put this item in the item column. Under quantity put how it was made. cash, cheque, credit card, debit card, something else. The final line is how much is still owing. When everything is correct * Save the document with the client's name, form-type, and date of the original request, or invoice number; * Export the document as a PDF, then email the PDF to your client, and to your bookkeeping email account. (The bookkeeping email account is an email account whose sole function is to store PDFs until you, your bookkeeper, or your accountant can go through them, and do the correct accounting procedure with them. Some caveats about using this: * The forms have to be correctly labelled as to what they are; * You have to use the same document, for everything from initial estimate to final receipt; * Previous payments have to be double checked, to ensure that the numbers are correct; To track outgo, the simple solution is: * Cash is completely prohibited; * Use a debit card for all purchases --- this includes rent, utilities, taxes, and everything else under the sun that your business uses; * Request both a paper and digital receipt for all purchases; * In a spreadsheet, One @ One page is for outgo: # use one row per purchase: # Columns are for: record #, date, time, place, card present/not present, vendor, vendor address, item purchased, cost of purchase; * lease payments are included in this sheet; * Payments on outstanding debt is included on this sheet; * Either you or your accountant or your book keeper needs to reconcile that spreadsheet with your bank withdrawals at least once a week; @ One page is for income; # use one row per payment: # Columns are for: invoice #, date, time, client name, client address, initial amount of purchase, amount paid today, amount still owing, how payment was made; * Either you or your accountant or your book keeper needs to reconcile that spreadsheet with your bank deposits at least once a week; @ One page is for leases, and debt. # use one row per payment; # Columns are for: record #, date, time, place, card present/not present, vendor, vendor address, item purchased, initial balance, amount paid, current amount owed; * This sheet duplicates payments
[libreoffice-users] LO Writer won't let me manually hyphenate a name.
I've got a name 'Bruinsma' that LO wants to hyphenate between the 'u' and the 'i'. I'm trying to get it to hyphenate between the 'n' and the 's'. LO won't let me. I go to tools-language-hyphenation with the word highlighted, but there's no way I can get it to move the hyphen. If I put my cursor where I want it to hyphenate and click 'hyphenate', it just closes the dialog and leaves the hyphen in the original place. There also doesn't seem to be a way to tell LO not to hyphenate that word at all. As I read the manuals, I should be able to just use 'ctrl plus -' to manually place a hyphen. But this doesn't work either. Using LO Version: 4.2.8.2 Build ID: 4.2.8.2-6.fc20 What am I missing? Re: [libreoffice-users] LO Writer won't let me manually hyphenate a name.
thanks. I tried what Tim suggested. It then will break after 'Bruin' until I enter more characters. Then it breaks after 'Bru'. So it wasn't that the manual break wasn't working--it was insisting on breaking automatically before it got to the manual break. So I need some way to stop it from breaking after 'Bru' when it wants to do that. Either only let it break after 'Bruin' or keep it from breaking altogether, as John suggested. But I don't want to turn off automatic hyphenating for the entire paragraph style. It looks like there's a method for preventing hyphenation in the name altogether--in 'writing aids' under options, by adding the word to a dictionary followed by '='.That seems to have done it. I think I've also finally found how to prevent auto hyphenating at undesired points (like 'Bru-')--certainly not intuitive: inserting 'No width no break'. Thanks for the suggestions. [libreoffice-users] LO in dedicated accessibility task.
This is a bit of a repost because someone forwarded part of my query from the accessibility list to this list. I'm using LO writer because it works with naturally speaking with full select and say capability Frequently I find myself needing to record notes or job task entries or something of that nature and given that my hands are not in wonderful shape, it is really painful to do all the mousing, switching context then positioning the cursor to start recording a note. I really need to just say something like log task entry and have it start up in the log file according to some internal logic defined in my speech command What I say to invoke the editor isn't really important. It usually calculate the filename based on the context such as time of day, and task . What's important is that I find a way to achieve the following behavior: 1. There is at most one instance of file open in the editor at a time 2. If there is no instances of the file open, open one 3. When switching window context to the open editor window for a given file, position the cursor at the end of the file 4. Autosave dictated data so that no need for recovery is necessary when we started the other after shutdown what I'm having the most trouble with is maintaining a single instance of the open file. I don't know how to tell if LO is open or if it can tell if it has already opened the the file and simply switch to it for focus. The second problem is the autosave without needing to do a recovery. What I would like is the ability to trigger a save command automatically whenever LO loses focus or a timeout happens. Any pointers? Re: [libreoffice-users] State of password support.
I don't know if this is relevant to Massimo's case but it might be: I had a problem a while back with Fedora 15 (and I don't remember which version of OO or LO): I would discover that I could open a password-protected spreadsheet without being prompted for the password. It turned out that it had something to do with Fed 15 shutting down w/o prompting to save an open and changed spreadsheet. When restarted, the spreadsheet would open without password protection. The workaround seemed to be to do a 'save as' at that point and check 'save with password'. More recently this hasn't seemed to be a problem, but I think it has happened once or twice, though I didn't bother to try to figure out why. Re: [libreoffice-users] Feature Request: Lack of Outliner Functionality a Deal Breaker for Me
I've been using opml editor (on Windows, unfortunately) which seems to do all these things. Once stuff is in place it can be copied and pasted into a LO document, I believe. When all the major Word Processers came along--MS Word, Word Perfect, etc, the lack of outliner functionality kept me with my archaic outliner until MS Word beat the functionality of PCOutline. I used outlining as my main method of work when a full-time technical writer in the 90s (e.g., Fujitsu Software in San Jose). While working for a java house, I was so influenced by the negative developer reactions to MS, that I've been wishing to move to OpenOffice or LibraOffice ever since they came along. But you don't have the functionality that I need, and furthermore, the discussions of outlining on this forum seem to miss the whole point, from my point of view. I'm a very motivated wannabe LibraOffice user who currently can't make the switch, because although I'm retired and writing fiction, the power of an outliner for writing in all genres is something I can't live without. So my reasons are complex--sorry about that--but tl:dr will not allow you to understand them. Please take the time. I really want to quit Microsoft Office forever and ever and ever. Thanx. The first functionality I need might seem mickey mouse, but it's the foundation for everything else. This is that in Word's outliner view, there's a button in front of every paragraph that I can drag and drop up and down. It's like cut and paste, but a lot faster. Combined with other features, it's extremely powerful. The second functionality I need is to be able to collapse things. In an article of 25 paragraphs, I can hide every line except the first line of the paragraph, thus allowing me to see the entire article of 25 paragraphs on the screen at the same time. This allows me to completely rearrange the entire article by drop and drag. For editing a single sentence or paragraph, I insert a return between sentences, phrases, and even words, drop and drag these elements into a new order, and delete the returns. Voila! A much better constructed paragraph or sentence in a snap. The third functionality is to collapse things within headers. For instance, if I've interviewed a dozen people for an article or if I've brainstormed 5 pages of random ideas for a blog or a chapter in a novel, I create headers for different topics and then drag and drop paragraphs, quotes, ideas, etc into the headers or buckets I've created. When one header becomes too full and fills too much of the screen, I collapse it, so that it hides all the paragraphs already there, which cleans up the screen. When I'm done with this step, I have half a dozen headers, under which are many different ideas, all of which are completely hidden. So I drag and drop my half a dozen headers into the correct order. Then I open the first main header and create a bunch of subheaders. Once this is done, I reorganize all of the points in this first section into subsections or sub-buckets, collapsing them all as needed until everything is organized into a number of different subheaders. At this point, I can rearrange all of these subheaders into the best order that they belong in. I can even drag a subheader into a different main heading if I choose, where it will remain as a separate section. I can repeat this process as many levels as I wish. This feature in MS Word is fractal to nine levels. From a chaotic mixture of confusion emerges order, insight, and wisdom--in one single step. As a technical writer, I used to sit in a brainstorming meetings, write down every developer idea as fast as I could (including those I didn't understand at all), type it all sequentially, and then very quickly organize all of the ideas into a coherent whole. The developers thought I actually knew how to program. (Mwah-hah-hah!) I could never have done that with LibreOffice as it's now configured or OpenOffice, either. Without my Word outliner, I would have been a shitty technical writer, and I would never have been able to write the developer guides I wrote. As a creative writer today, I currently have a dozen projects that are percolating, as well as one major project that I'm focusing on. I just brainstorm for anything that comes up, drag the ideas into the proper buckets, and I never lose anything of value.

You're right, of course. We started talking about keys, but then somewhere the word 'button' started getting used to refer to keys. [libreoffice-users] page down in word processors
Something I've never figured out--and seems true of LO/OO as well as M$ Word: When reading through a document, one hits 'PgDn', but one doesn't get a new page--it only scrolls down some seemingly arbitrary number of lines. One has to scan the new screen to see what one left off reading and one may only have gotten a half page of new reading for the effort. Maybe I'm spoiled by e-readers. But maybe, even after all these years, I haven't figured out how to do this correctly in a word processor. Re: [libreoffice-users] page down in word processors
But the issue is now what it's called. The problem is that it doesn't screen down consistently, giving a full new screen save for a consistent one- or two-line overlap at the top. But maybe, even after all these years, I haven't figured out how to do this correctly in a word processor. I think you are missing the different functions of the two sorts of software. E-readers are what they say they are: readers. In other words, their users are using them to read documents. More than that, in general they will be reading the documents sequentially: when they get to the end of one page, they will next want to see the next page. And the only sense of page is as much as fills the screen of the display device. Word processors are quite different. In general, they are still fixated on printing the final document: the page size is the format of the eventual supposed printed version, not necessarily (and not usually) the size and format of the screen used for display. People usually choose settings that display less than a printed page of a document; if you were looking at such a screenful and then moved down a full page, you would unhelpfully have missed part of the text. But the bigger point is that a word processor is designed for editing, not reading. If you are editing at one point in a document and you now need to move down to a point currently off your screen image, it is not at all obvious - quite unlikely, in fact - that you would want to move to a following page. It is much more likely that you would want to be able to see some part of the document further down but whilst also still seeing the part on which you had just been working. The original model, then, is that no-one would read documents on screen but only from hard copy. It is interesting that software has been moving towards servicing screen reading, albeit rather slowly. Microsoft Powerpoint allows you to save a presentation as a slide show, in which case it opens for any recipient as for display, not for further editing. Microsoft Word has a reading mode, which displays screenfuls - not necessarily in the original layout - and in which your page down function works as you want. There is also a freeware Word Viewer available from Microsoft, intended for users without Microsoft Word installed. Again, since this is a reader and not an editor, it responds to page down requests by moving down a screenful. Oh, and try opening a read-only file with LibreOffice Writer: I think you'll find that it will now treat page down differently and move down (almost) a screenful. Should word processing and similar software provide an explicit reading mode for use in reading, not editing, documents? Possibly. Meanwhile, if you want something close to this behaviour in Writer, here's your workaround: just click the Edit File button in the Standard toolbar to toggle on this behaviour. I trust this helps. The first time this happened (sometime in Dec, as I recall), if I was prompted as I was today (that the document had been changed and did I want to save it), I would have just saved it--and only noticed later that it was no long password-protected. [libreoffice-users] #NAME? error in valid formula in xlsx format spreadsheet
TIA! I have an xlsx format spreadsheet with several formulas: =PRODUCT(SUM(months(10/21/2012,NOW(),1),months(11/6/2012,NOW(),1)) ,50) When I close and re-open the spreadsheet, the cell with the formula gives me the #NAME? error. The first time I saw this and after quite a while trying to determine what was wrong, I figured out that nothing at all was wrong with the formula. All it takes for the spreadsheet to do the calculation is to modify the cell. For example, changing just one of the months() functions to MONTHS() and then pressing enter will allow the cell to calculate the value, even though only one of the months() functions has been capitalized. In fact, thinking that there might be some option making the function be case specific, when I first noticed the problem, I had tried to capitalize the months() function, but when I hit enter, the upper case was subsequently changed to lower case and the calculation was performed anyway. When the spreadsheet is saved in ods or xls format, the formula is calculated as would be expected after a close/re-open and the months() is upper cased to MONTHS(). Since I know how to fix the error after re-opening, it isn't a big deal, but it sure would be nice not having to edit all the formulas just to get my calculations performed. Any idea why closing and re-opening the xlsx spreadsheet causes the formula to error when there really is no error? Other than saving in ods or xls format, any idea how to fix the issue? [libreoffice-users] document protection not working
I've got a Calc document that I've had for years with password protection on it. Suddenly the protection has stopped working--the document opens without any prompting for password. I went into File/Properties and reset protection. But it's still opening without password. When I go back to Properties/Security, the unprotect button shows. What can have happened? Thanks. Re: [libreoffice-users] document protection not working
Oops. I was setting the protection for change recording state. Password protecting the document is on the save as dialogue. Seems to be working now. Must have gotten unset somehow, though that presumably would have required my using 'save as' to save the document and unchecking the password box. Whatever. Thanks. Sorry, that is my best shot and i'm sure you have probably already tried it. My guess is that even renaming the User Profile wouldn't fix this one so i'm all at sea. [libreoffice-users] animation in an impress documennt
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1In11apApKozw_UOPAhVz0ePqns72_6652Dra34xWp4E/edit if you look at this document here (yes yes it's Google docs. It was easiest way to share and get comments from others) you'll see I'm trying to describe a different approach to speech driven programming. What I could use here from the LO folks is how can I implement a simulation of the user interface in impress. classfield = attribute get (extended class u'').strip() IDfield = attrib.get('xid', u'').strip() stylefield = attrib.get('style', u'').strip() I want the animation to go through the following script: type in classfield = shows speech bubble containing attribute get and then slowly type in the same words. Repeat the bubble and text several times for the rest of the line Then show the cursor move back to the attribute get and speech bubbles says toggle word. The phrase attribute get is replaced with new phrase after the old one transition out and the new one transitions in. I don't even know where I would start to look for the answers on this one. I would appreciate some help. Also, double-check all places where MIME Type strings are expressed, including in the mimetype file of the package. There should be no ,, ; or whitespace characters in the content values. Just copied the exact values from an existing file, so these should be OK. Only need 3 actually: application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text for the document itself, text/xml for all XML files and image/png for the images. As for your previous question: Finally, how are you producing the mimetype in the Zip package? It might be better to let LO do that. I'm not producing it, I'm copying it from an existing ODF document, so there shouldn't be any problem at all. I'll make sure the type written in it is actually the type written in the manifest.xml file for the root document though.
