Re: [libreoffice-users] A tab bar would be highly useful.
I disagree. I often like to view documents simultaneously and it would be a real pain to have to keep tabbing between them. So if suck a feature is on the cards i would very strongly suggest that it be made optional (as is the case e.g. with gimp). Well, in the new version, the tabs are gone! Woe! I'd like to see them again! It was very useful to be able to switch from document to document by clicking on a tab, rather than having all of the documents in separate windows. Is it possible to implement this feature in a future instance of LibreOffice? Thanks. [libreoffice-users] spaces inserted or not when pasting
Hi, Im having difficulty understanding how writer handles soaces when copying/pasting. Sometimes i can select a word by mouse click, when no spaces are in the selection, but on pasting a space - leading ivthink but maybe its trailing- is also inserted. Yet if the same word is selected in the same way and deleted,a space is not deleted with it -which would be useful ss it would avoid introduction of double spaces in the document. Other times i make a selection which includes a leading or trailing space, but this space is stripped on pasting. Im still using an oldish version: 5.2.2.2 on ubuntu ; But it would be good if someone could either confirm that this was an issue that has been fixed in a later version; or explain why, and under what circumstances, spaces are included / added to / removed from a selection on the clipboard, as its mystifying and often irritating to me. Hi Ive discovered that a great way to position an image in writer is to drag it into an empty table cell. There's only onevthing i' m not liking and that is, writer seems always to add a 'border' underneath the image. [libreoffice-users] calc functionality question
Hi Ive just been using calc, i had a few cells in a column selected intending to fill down but unintentionally did something else, dragging somehow with the mouse as if moving the cells vertically. The text in the cells did not move, instead it vanished and i was left with a bold double outline around the cells that would have been the destination if the drag had moved the cell contents. Ctrl-z restored the cell contents in their original position, but the heavy black outline temained around the 'destination' cells and did not disappear even when selecting a completely different cell. It remains even after i perform the fill down with the cells that i had originally intended. I have a number of related questions: a) what does this heavy outline signify, what is its purpose? It doesnt seem to be involved with input in any way as it remains when a new cell is selected and that new cell appears to have the focus as normal. b) what did i do to get it - if i acctually want this at some future date, how do i go about getting it? c) how do i cancel it, and get rid of the heavy outline? Im using 1:5.2.2-0ubuntu2.1 (which i realise is a bit old but updating will have to wait until i have internet access on my computer to upgrade) Thanks /Gary -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ Privacy Policy: https://www.documentfoundation.org/privacy

Re: [libreoffice-users] table spacing default?
Thanks for reply, i'll look into that. The tables i am using dont all have the same dimensions, it's only the spacing below that is (nearly always) the same, to adequately space the following text from the bottom of the table. I can always add an extra row at the bottom since my tables are borderless; but if they weren't this wouldn't be possible. With other rows i can change row height to alter the spacing but this won't work on the bottom row. /G. On Fri, 28/9/18, Regina Henschel wrote: Subject: Re: [libreoffice-users] table spacing default? The problem appears to be in the target document as if i undo the paste and just type some text and hit enter, i get a page break before the new line (and no, the ctrl key hasnt got jammed down). Any ideas what might cause this? [libreoffice-users] side by side tables
PS to previous post I know i could do this by having one "giant" table and just leaving some empty columns &/or rows but it would be more flexible to have two tables as then they could for example have different row heights if necessary. [libreoffice-users] side by side tables
Hi Ive found out how to resize tables so they dont take up the full page width (though to be honest i usually find it easier and more flexible to simply include an additional empty column to right and left and adjust widths as required) but what i would really like to be able to do is to have two (or perhaps more) tables juxtaposed horizontally. Is there a way to align tables horizontally (without resorting to frames, which i tend to find are a right pain in the proverbials)? [libreoffice-users] Autocomplete can be but...
I often find autocomplete extremely useful so i don't like to turn it off; but it comes complete with its own set of frustrations. I don' t know if developers read this list so this could well fall onto stoney ground, but IMO - and i stress that, IMO - it would be nice if: 1) LO could make a distinction between backspace and delete. It is often inconvenient if, when typing but not looking at the screen, and realising i have entered a wrong character, to press backspace, enter the character i should have entered, continue typing, and some time later to spot that the backspace hasn't worked because it merely cancelled autotype suggestion. I would suggest that rejecting autotype should be seen as a delete forward operation (after all, the characters in the suggestion have not been typed yet) and so delete key should work as it does; but backspace should actually work as it would without autocomplete and should delete the last character typed (as well as cancelling the autotype). 2) Hitting enter did NOT accept the autotype, but some other key or combination of keys was necessary to accept the suggestion; It is just too easy when entering text to forget to press delete and so end up with a word you didn't intend, again especially when not looking at the screen, in which case you wouldn't be aware that autocomplete had kicked in. I'm not sure *what* exactly i would suggest for this, but it should be something that is not regularly used to terminate a word or a line to explicitly accept the suggestion (maybe shift-space??) Having enter accept the suggestion is particularly tedious when entering text in calc, as it advances to the next cell and you then have to double click to 'correct' the text. Just some thoughts, that maybe will set someone else thinking. [libreoffice-users] autocomplete of selection
Hi, I've noticed that LO has a nasty tendency to try to second-guess what i want (almost always incorrectly) when trying to select text, automatically extending my carefully selected start/end point to the beginning/end of a word. Is there a way to turn off this "festure"? It's extremely irritating. If it's significant, ive got lo 5.2.2.2 under ubuntu. Re: [libreoffice-users] automatic fractions
Sorry i thought i had replied to list but it seems i was mistaken. Ive got it sussed now, i have to *double click* in the cell and then *add a space* after the fraction before pressing ctrlZ (as the fraction was the only text in the cell, i didn't think to do either of these). Then it works just as i need it to. Thanks for your help. G. [libreoffice-users] automatic fractions
Hi Usually its a useful thing to have fractions like 1/2 converted to a single character but sometimes its better if the characters are kept separate, eg if used along with other fractions that dont have a single character representation, eg 5/7. It seems using teplace doesnt achieve what i want because if the replacement image has different proportions from the original it is distorted when it is inserted and that is exactly what must NOT happen. Re: [libreoffice-users] frames
Thanks Brian. I will play with Draw, havent usedit much before, to see if i can fairly easily get what i need. Basically for images to be in a 'table' formation, with text comments on each row. I want each image to have the same height, but the length of comments, and hence possibly the height of each row will not necessarily be the same. The ability to easily insert a new row would be nice, but probably not essential. G. [libreoffice-users] frames
LO 5.2.2.2 ubuntu 16.10 Hello I have an arrangement of frames on a page which i would like to exactly replicate on all successive pages of the document. How do i go about this? Ive tried saving as a template but a) i dont know if thats right for this and b) even if it is i dont knoe how to get it to repest on every new page. Simply loading the ott file doesnt seen to do it. Is it possible to group frames and move/copy them ss a unit? Ive tried shift click as per manual and ctrl click and combinations but cant seem to select more than one frame at a time. And its S tedious moving individual frames. When i try i find the document suddenly scrolls and the frame ends up in the wrong place or (more often) disappears completely out of sight and i am forced to undo and try again. There simply HAS to be a way to do this without pulling all my hair out??? Re: [libreoffice-users] sort order
Got it! I can replace the ''A" in my "Aa" with Greek alpha (or with Russian 'A') and it works perfectly, with the minor exception that the non English characters look as if they have come from a different font. Re: [libreoffice-users] vlookup case
Wow! Thanks i'll look into that and maybe try to adapt it. The strings are of variable length from 1 to 3 characters. What i came up with (bypassing VLOOKUP altogether) was =CONCATENATE (MID ($J$2, FIND(LEFT (A2,1), $J $3),1),IFERROR(MID($J$2, FIND (MID (A2,2,1), $J $3),1," "),IFERROR (MID ($J $2,FIND (MID (A2,3,1), $J $3,1),1," ")) (I think); which takes each character from the string in A2, gets the position of that character in the string held in J2, then extracts the corresponding character from the string held in J3 and concatenates it to the result. In the case of the string being less than 3 characters, MID () will return an error which will result in " " concatenated instead. Null string would have been better but in my case space works just as well. Its very cumbersome (and more so because in my actual file the strings J2 and J3 are in fact located on a different sheet); but it does what i need and thats all i demand of it! The methods of converting to text are very useful to know. In the end i did indeed use the TEXT function in a formula, and conditionally substituted a blank where the string was shorter. Again not exactly elegant but it works and thats the main thing. It would be helpful to be able to define a nonstandard sort order but i dont think thats easily possible in a case like this (?: but im very willing to be proved wrong on that ) Again i think i'd be into the realm of macros! What is the range of your numerical values? In practice, this is unlikely to span the entire range that Calc can handle. If your values are all positive and non-zero, for example, then zero will do. Otherwise a sentinel value such as -999 might suffice. If you don't want this number to appear in your list, you can hide it using Conditional Formatting with a cell style having its font colour set to white (or whatever is your cell background colour). Alternatively, you can set the cell format of your range itself to something like [WHITE][<=0]0;0 . But the number would still be there, of course, so you'd have to take care if you did any calculations on the range such as AVERAGE(). No: changing format of cells already containing values never changes the stored values themselves. But there are two alternative easy ways to do this: o In another column, enter =TEXT(Xn;"0") (or whatever is a suitable format string). o Fill down the column. o Select the new values and cut. o Paste them over the originals, but using Edit | Paste Special... (or Ctrl+Shift+V), selecting Numbers but not Formulae in the Paste Special dialogue. o Select the range of values. o Go to Data | Text to Columns... . o In the Text to Columns dialogue, under Fields, click on the column header (probably currently Standard). o In the "Column type" drop-down, select Text. o OK. Surely your lookup formula just needs to ascribe some numeric value outside and below this range instead of the blank character or empty cell that you may have at present? I trust this helps. Re: [libreoffice-users] vlookup case
Thanks for very helpful reply. It does seem to be a big drawback with these functions. I'll certainly try it but ive found a workaround that im using at the mo: ive defined two strings in adjacent cells and using string functions to find the position of a character in one string then extract the corresponding character from the other. Much less elegant and it was quite tiresome to implement but ive at least got it to work, in the limited cases that im using it so far. If i extend it to transliterate strings of arbitrary length (for now the max length ive needed is 3 chars) then i guess i'll probably have to get into macros. Thanks G. Then try: =INDEX(B1:Bn;MATCH(1;EXACT("text";A1:An);0)) Note that this is an array formula, so when you have entered it you must complete the process by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Enter. [libreoffice-users] named data ranges
Hello again I appear to be experiencing a problem with named data ranges lo 5.2.2.2 x64 win 7. Q. Is it possible and permissible to define overlapping data ranges? I want a range named mdec which will be A1:B25 and another xlit B1:C25 (the col B values are common) to use in lookups. I have set them up and they appear ok in the Define Database Range dialog. However, when i try to enter xlit as the range in a formula i find that it automatically gets changed to mdec. Im going now to try with the ranges defined explicitly instead of using the names, but i wonder if this problem sounds at all familiar to anyone, and if theres anything i can do about it? Re: [libreoffice-users] sorting in calc
Hello all, Ive managed to solve my problem in a roundabout way. To give the context, i have a column containing strings of length 1 to 3 which may contain nonstandard characters and which i must sort in a specific order (not the usual alphabetic order). To achieve this i have a table assigning a number (col B) to each char (col A) in sheet 2, defined as a range 'xlit'. On sheet 1 column A has strings to be sorted, columns B-D contain number to represent char 1,2,3 of the string. I obtain these numbers as text, using a formula of the form =IFERROR(TEXT(VLOOKUP(MID (Ax,y,1),xlit,2,0),"General"")," ") where x is the row containing the string and y is 1,2 or 3 for the appropriate char of the string, returning the number as a string or " "if the character doesnt exist (string is of shorter length). I can now order my strings by sorting on columns B,C,D in that order. Perhaps there might have been an easier way to do it, but it works and thats what counts Gary -------- On Thu, 9/3/17, Gary Collins <gcatl...@yahoo.co.uk> wrote: Subject: Re: [libreoffice-users] sorting in calc To: "Gary Collins" <gcatl...@yahoo.co.uk>, "Dries Feys" <dries.f...@tvh.com> Cc: "users@global.libreoffice.org" <users@global.libreoffice.org> Date: Thursday, 9 March, 2017, 9:12 Hello Dries Thank you for your reply. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: How to find out which fonts are used in an Open Document?
I have a vague recollection of this, or something very like it, cropping up before. If it is not already an area marked for development, I think it should certainly be. I think that if a font is being replaced, the reader of the document should be given the ability to easily ascertain that this is the case. Perhaps somewhere in document properties there should be a tab or something to list the names of each font used in the document, giving original name together with associated replacements, if a replacement font has been used; and/or an option to open a dialog box for any font not found, and the replacement that will be used, at the time of opening a document. /Gary From: PedroTo: users@global.libreoffice.org Sent: Saturday, 6 February 2016, 0:06 Subject: [libreoffice-users] Re: How to find out which fonts are used in an Open Document? [libreoffice-users] Inconveniences of time format
Hi I've got a column in calc 4.3.2.2 to contain the length of video clips; it's formatted to Time>876613:37:46. The first inconvenience is that, when using autoincrement the times are incremented not by 1 second but by 24 hours. Whilst i understand that this is due to the way date/time is stored, with the date as integer and the time as fraction, i think it is not exactly intuitive. I feel that it might be much more convenient if LO would take the formatting into account and increment by 1 second (or, to be more precise, by 1 LSD to the chosen format). Similarly, when entering such times i think it would be more helpful to give precedence to the LSD, so entering 8, for example, would be interpreted as 8 seconds (rather than 8 hours as is cuŕrently the case) and 8:40 as 8m40s. Again, this interpretation should be format dependent. What does anyone else think? Re: [libreoffice-users] copying text with formatting from a web page
I've just tried this in firefox. A couple of things: 1) access to the file save option seems to be indirect - but maybe there is a way to customise this, I haven't got time to check at the moment; but 2) much more importantly - it does indeed save as a single file, but the formatting is *awful* nothing like the original page, and pictures, graphics, etc are not there - just links. That's not what I want to see when I open a webpage file, I want to see the page (more or less) the same as it was originally when I opened it online. Which raises another issue: I save pages for later viewing on a machine that doesn't have an internet connection. I'm assuming that an internet connection will be essential to follow any of the hyperlinks in the file, which would render the format useless for my purposes. best,/G. Re: [libreoffice-users] copying text with formatting from a web page
Tom, That's a good suggestion, perhaps I should have thought of it. I will give it a go. In general, I use MS because it has been the only one I know capable of handling .mht files, and I save web pages using that format because I find it *much* more convenient to have the page saved in a single file, rather than as a file plus a folder. Perhaps other browsers can now open these files now? I don't know, I haven't got around to checking recently. You know how it is, you find something that works for you and just stick with it - kind of inertia. I had a reply privately from Brian, though, which suggested that it might be due to the type of formatting used in the .css - using "vertical-align", and if so, that LO probably wouldn't recognise it. I checked the file in a text editor and that is indeed how the superscripting is generated in these pages. I have since found a workaround which is not the most convenient but will at least allow me to get done what I need to get done. best,/Gary From: Tom Davies <tomc...@gmail.com> To: Gary Collins <gcatl...@yahoo.co.uk> Cc: "users@global.libreoffice.org" <users@global.libreoffice.org> Sent: Friday, 9 October 2015, 18:25 Subject: Re: [libreoffice-users] copying text with formatting from a web page Hi :) So Microsoft's Internet Explorer only plays well with Microsoft Office? Err, is there any surprise there? Have you tried with other web-browsers? Internet Explorer often seems to be a pos imo and ime. Each release of it seems to have a load of different 'issues' handling internationally agreed standards (yes, Microsoft ARE involved in setting those standards!). So websites sometimes have to write extra code specifically aimed at certain versions of IE. At best IE seems to behave more like a trojan as it's so often found to have remarkable security issues. MS usually put out at least 1 or more security patch per fortnight to deal with some critical problem or other. Please, please, please try Chrome, Safari, Opera, or anything else. Even Firefox's worst releases appear to be better than IE. There are a huge range of web-browsers available for free and quite easy to download and install. Personally i would probably paste anything off a website as plain-text and then add back the formatting myself. There are a few websites i kinda trust but in general i'd try to avoid risking pulling dodgy formatting and what-ever else across into another program/app. Sorry for the tone here! Good luck with all this! Many apols sand regards from Tom :) On 9 October 2015 at 15:54, Gary Collins <gcatl...@yahoo.co.uk> wrote: Should've said, I'm using 4.4.3.2/G. Re: [libreoffice-users] copy cell format
I think the problem being experienced is that the column widths are not copied or adjusted to fit the contents. The best I can think of is to paste the data, then select it and use Format>Column>optimal width. This may not be quite what is required, but it may at least help a bit. /Gary From: Jim QuinnTo: users@global.libreoffice.org; Thomas Sent: Friday, 18 September 2015, 12:17 Subject: Re: [libreoffice-users] copy cell format Sorry for just replying to email vs getting into LO and answering. Just too busy with huge biking event this weekend and am new using LO forums. That said, if I understand that you want to copy the data from 1 spread sheet file (1 or more rows/columns) and paste just the data into a file with different column/row formatting, then use the "Paste Special" option and only check the items in the "Paste Special" pop-up menu that you want. Do not check "Format" and the column/row format will remain unchanged. Of course, the number of rows/columns you paste into should equal what you copied. -Original Message- From: Thomas Sent: Friday, September 18, 2015 4:02 AM To: users@global.libreoffice.org Subject: [libreoffice-users] copy cell format Good evening I have been trying to find hints in the documentation, but had no success so far. I have (naturally) a number of sheets / files. Sometimes I want to copy let's say the first row, which contains all the names of the columns etc., to create a new document. (not ALL documents use the same format) Imagine there are 20-25 columns, most of which have different widths. But when I copy row No.1 from file A to a new file, no matter HOW I paste it there, it ALWAYS comes out with equal column width (+ the default height of the new document). That means, I have to reformat the whole thing EVERY time I do this. (not frequently, but also not a rare operation) In an ancient but VERY useful software = Lotus123 that requires only checking one box. If I understand the page: https://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Copying_Attributes_With_the_Format_Paintbrush correctly, "Form control is selected Not supported" means that Calc is not able to do what Lotus could do 20 years ago. Is that right? Or am I missing something? I am also under the impression, that the "paint brush" works ONLY within one file, but not across different files. Styles do not help either (as far as I can tell), since I could not find any tab there, where I can specify column width + height. Is there a trick? Is so, I would really like to know. Thank you. Just checked task manager again. Although LO was not listed under the applications tag, it seems there were *dozens* of soffice.bin and soffice.exe entries under the processes tag. deleting on of them suddenly opened up a whole load of document windows on my desktop - and also terminated the majority of those processes in the TM. I have tried that and it worked. What I did: Select a large numer of columns in Calc, and set the columns to the required width. You can then merge pairs of cells. Actually you don't have to do all of them. If you have 4 or 5 merged cells, just copy these a number of times to the other columns. And then you copy this to another row starting at the second cell, so that it gets indented. Now if you copy/paste these to Writer they seem to keep their widths. But you have to use Edit Paste Special Formatted Text. For me the column widths are preserved. O, yes, if you do something with the column widths in Writer, with Table Properties Columns, select 'Adapt table width'. This causes the table width to follow the sum of the column widths instead of being fixed. -- Piet van Oostrum p...@vanoostrum.org WWW: http://pietvanoostrum.com/ PGP key: [8DAE142BE17999C4] -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
Re: [libreoffice-users] Question about LO Writer and complex documents
I think that register is an important consideration. Colloquial language tends to be in a state of flux and dictionaries will always lag behind. Formal language tends to be far more conservative, and that, I think, is where proper is likely to be a more important consideration. Is either more correct than the other? Not really. It depends on the nature and purpose of the communication. But improper use of words and grammar will, of course, give the impression that the communicator has been poorly educated. (Again, that could be considered a loaded concept.) Where making a good impression is important, dictionaries are very useful tools indeed. /Gary From: Felmon Davis dav...@union.edu To: users@global.libreoffice.org Sent: Thursday, 30 July 2015, 21:48 Subject: Re: [libreoffice-users] Question about LO Writer and complex documents On Wed, 29 Jul 2015, anne-ology wrote: grammar skillfully employed procures meaningful communication, [see below for comments to your comments] yes, 'skillful' is not the same as 'proper'. or let's put it this way, 'proper' is ambiguous. it could mean 'according to some accepted standard' or it could be 'adept'. an act of communication can be 'improper' but apt or 'proper' but inept. some think 'the King and me' is 'improper' and should be 'the King and I'. aside from reasons of gentility they are equally fit to purpose. Re: [libreoffice-users] table with offset between rows
Ah, I think I didn't state my problem clearly, as usual! What I mean is, I want the cells of the bottom row to be offset by half a cell horizontally from those in the top row, so that the vertical borders of the top row come halfway across the cells of the bottom row. (I'm doing a comparison of chronologies. Each cell width is to represent one year, but the starting point of the year for the bottom row is shifted by six months from the year start in the top row.) Technically, it should be possible to merge cells alternately, but there'll be a heck of a lot of cells (as many as I can reasonably get on a landscape page and still have room for a few characters in each cell; I'll have to experiment, but I reckon at least 40 - 50 in a row) so unless there's a way of automating that, it's out of the question. I'm guessing I'll have to have a separate table for each row; in principle that's not a problem; but I haven't worked out how to align the two tables (in writer); they seem always to expand to fill the page width and are quite difficult to resize afterwards. I'm guessing there must be a way to do this, I just haven't found it yet. If possible, I'd like to make the first cell of the row wider and have the rest adjust to a common width to the end of the table, but at the moment, at least, that's icing on the cake. I've tried importing a selected row of cells from calc into draw to do this, in theory I think this ought to work well, but the problem I'm experiencing there is that cell size and formatting don't seem to be preserved when pasting the row. I don't really mind how I achieve it, as long as it's not too tedious! It's not hugely surprising to hear it can't cope with Open Formats such .Odg. This is a typical problem of proprietary programs. By limiting their ability to use non-proprietary formats it can force people into vendor lock-ins. The problem is created by the proprietary tools but somehow it's the OpenSource ones that get the blame and 'have to' solve it. Open Source tools open things up to freely available formats that anyone can use in any suitable program and in the future it will be relatively simple to create tools that can read files saved in such open formats. Re: [libreoffice-users] [OT] Operating Environment Survey
The company I used to work for manufactured mass spectrometers and we used PDP 11s with software written in PASCAL to control the instruments and gather and present the data they generated. The biggest pain in the neck was having to use overlays to swap parts of the program code into and out of memory as required. These days, that sort of thing happens quite transparently, and unless you're into writing operating systems, it's not the sort of thing you're likely to come across. /Gary From: Tom Davies tomc...@gmail.com To: Tim---Kracked_P_P---webmaster webmas...@krackedpress.com; Gary Collins gcatl...@yahoo.co.uk Cc: users@global.libreoffice.org users@global.libreoffice.org Sent: Wednesday, 22 July 2015, 5:19 Subject: Re: [libreoffice-users] [OT] Operating Environment Survey Hi :) PDP11s look interesting! Then I started working at several colleges with those ghastly PDP/11 systems. One was the core for a large computer center with large tape units, and one was just a stand alone system with a drive platter and all of those dump terminals. That stand alone PDP/11 system is where I had to write/code/etc. a full general ledger accounting system using COBOL. Have you even tried to write a data entry system for an accounting system, so people could not type in the wrong info/data - like Feb 29th for a non-leap year or an account number that is not created, or other values that are not within the proper any of the data ranges. That was 3 time the coding size than all of the rest of the system, including the account query/search system and report generating systems. Yes, I remember those data cassette tape drive computers, before you could afford a dual floppy IBM PC/AT/XT clone. Then there were those 10 MEG hard drives. I saw the introduction of the PC based Hard Drive CD ROM drive, then burner Real Graphics above 640 by 480 I saw the introduction of the Bulletin board system that was interconnected so you had a primitive email address - mine was almost 80 characters long. I saw the start of the WWW part of the Internet, which is what is now THE Internet, since most of the other parts [terminal based mostly] have either died or been converted to use a browser. Of course there are still parts that run via the terminal which I still use from time to time - mostly local to server communications. The domain I use for this email address - I own - was first created in the early '90, when you only had 14.4 dialup for most areas of the US, and has gone from one domain service to another, and my hosting service from one to another, till I finally settled on the one[s] I have been using for many years now. Yes I have seen the wireless phone go from the big brick technology through to the introduction of the smart phone technology. I now use a LG base model Android phone, since I do not need all of the wow-wee stuff. I do not need to use it for my every computer need, like some are touted. I have bought 3 Android tablets over the years. I still use 2 of them. And no, I do not like the hype of not needing a larger system - laptop or desktop - since a Android, IOSx, or MS OS claims it will do everything you will need. My desktop I am typing this from is an old 4 core running Linux Mint 16 with 4 hard drives internal, 1 OS and 3 data drives - adding up to 6.25 TB - with 3 external 2 TB drives for backup. I use to have 4 backup, till an internal 2TB drive failed and I needed my spare to replace it. I really wonder how you could get a tablet to have 6 TB of data storage. I also like to see these tablets find printer drivers to run the USB or network printing. I have enough trouble tryng to find a working Linux [.deb] printer driver for my newer printers, and I have not been able to get any of my android tablets to access any of my colored printers - just a older HP laser printer. I now look for Linux drivers BEFORE I decide to buy the printers. I have gone from punched card data entry to web-based data entry screens. I have gone from cassette tapes, through to floppies, internal/external hard drives, USB flash drives and SD cards. I have seen mainframe computers the size of a bedroom, down to a refrigerator. I have seen the IBM PC come out

What factors influence the choice? My first home computer was a BBC micro (anyone remember those?) That was back in the days when programming had to be really tight, only had 32Kb (yes, Kb) of RAM; long term storage was all external on cassette tapes, eventually upgraded to floppy disk drive (and the disks really were floppy). I've still got that computer and AFAIK it still works! My next machine was Acorn Archimedes, followed by RISC PC. It's a great shame that the marketing for those machines was so poor, leading to collapse of the company. The ARM chips had a great architecture and instruction set. After that, I got my first laptop, a Sony Vaio running windows XP. When I upgraded, which I was forced to do due to a machine failure, I got a laptop running Windows 7 - which is still my current machine. A better Windows, once I'd got used to it, but it had a real downer - couldn't get driver for my flatbed scanner - Canon didn't produce one. At work, in my first job I used a computer called a PDP 11 (ghastly thing); can't remember what the OS was called. In my second job I think we started off with some sort of mainframe, the details of which are hazy now. Later we migrated to Sun Spark workstations. In my last real job, used PCs running windows, I think it was XP at that time. Now in my office based voluntary work I use PCs with Windows 7. Did have a play with Win 8 on a laptop, but hated it. It might be OK for tablets, I don't know, but it was horrible to use with normal PC input devices. I have thought about upgrading to Linux but have never got around to it. This is mainly because of familiarity with certain software packages, especially Photoshop. I know there is GIMP for Linux, but it's not a patch - for one thing, it doesn't have the concept of adjustment layers; and that means that all my working files, which tend to be saved as TIFF with layer compression, can't be properly loaded and edited in GIMP.I also make use of a video editor (not free but fairly inexpensive) which can edit MPEG2 files without reencoding unchanged parts of the video, which makes it quite fast and doesn't lose quality. Something like that probably does exist for Linux but I haven't got around to looking, and familiarity is a big part of the story.Another thing is the convenience of plug and play when it comes to hardware - I don't think I've ever had to manually load a driver, everything seems to work out of the box and that's a very good thing, saves a lot of time and effort. I'm not sure what Linux is like in that respect, as I've had no experience. On my phone I have android and I tend to get on reasonably well with that. I'm not sure what I will do if I ever need to change computer again. /Gary -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
