[libreoffice-users] Limit or stop scrolling

2021-08-18 Thread Gary Collins
HiIs it possible to limit, or stop altogether,  the automatic scrolling,
usually nigh on uncontrollable, that happens when content is dragged from one
document window to another? I dont think this problem is specific to LO but its
probably most frustrating with LO and someone here may well have the answer.

[libreoffice-users] Diacritics with macron

2021-04-12 Thread Gary Collins
Hi Im writing a document including classical Greek and im having trouble
finding how to get some of the diacritics with macron. Most accented charshave
their own unicode but macron with accent etc requires combined diacritics. Ive
found out how to get acute / grave accent with macron by combining macron
character with u+0x301 / u+0x300 respectively but i cant locate unicode to
combine breathings with macron, or combined  breathing and accent with macron.
Can anyone help me out? Im using lo 6.0.7.3 with ubuntu 18.04.8.ThanksGary

Hi
I have a table m×n in calc that i would like to reduce to a single column with

Re: [libreoffice-users] A tab bar would be highly useful.

2019-02-22 Thread Gary Collins
I disagree. I often like to view documents simultaneously and it would be a
real pain to have to keep tabbing between them. So if suck a feature is on the
cards i would very strongly suggest that it be made optional (as is the case
e.g. with gimp).

So, the previous version of LibreOffice had
 tabs, allegedly only because I
run it on a Mac. Well, in the new
version, the tabs are gone! Woe! I'd like
to see them again! It was very useful
to be able to switch from document to
document by clicking on a tab, rather
than having all of the documents in
 separate windows.

Is it possible to implement this
feature in a future instance of
 LibreOffice?

 Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] spaces inserted or not when pasting

2019-01-22 Thread Gary Collins
Hi,
Im having difficulty understanding how writer handles soaces when
copying/pasting. Sometimes i can select a word by mouse click, when no spaces
are in the selection, but on pasting a space - leading ivthink but maybe its
trailing- is also inserted. Yet if the same word is selected in the same way
and deleted,a space is not deleted with it -which would be useful ss it would
avoid introduction of double spaces in the document. Other times i make a
selection which includes a leading or trailing space, but this space is
stripped on pasting.
Im still using an oldish version: 5.2.2.2 on ubuntu ;
But it would be good if someone could either confirm that this was an issue
that has been fixed in a later version; or explain why, and under what
circumstances, spaces are included / added to / removed from a selection on the
clipboard, as its mystifying and often irritating to me.
Thanks,
Gary

[libreoffice-users] lo writer image in table border issue

2018-12-03 Thread Gary Collins
Hi
Ive discovered that a great way to position an image in writer is to drag it
into an empty table cell. There's only onevthing i' m not liking and that is,
writer seems always to add a 'border' underneath the image. This is NOT spacing
to contents, which is 0, nor is it down to the image dimensions as it seems to
be a constant height for various images. What i'd like is a way to make the
lower border of the cell coincide at least more or less with the bottom of the
image. If i try to do this by dragging the border up to the bottom of the image
it jumps back down when i release the mouse button. Is there a way to achieve
this?
Lo 5.2.2.2 0ubuntu 2.1.
If its possible in a later version but not in mine i'd be interested to know
that too.
Thanks

[libreoffice-users] calc functionality question

2018-11-09 Thread Gary Collins
Hi
Ive just been using calc, i had a few cells in a column selected intending to
fill down but unintentionally did something else, dragging somehow with the
mouse as if moving the cells vertically. The text in the cells did not move,
instead it vanished and i was left with a bold double outline around the cells
that would have been the destination if the drag had moved the cell contents.
Ctrl-z restored the cell contents in their original position, but the heavy
black outline temained around the 'destination' cells and did not disappear
even when selecting a completely different cell. It remains even after i
perform the fill down with the cells that i had originally intended.
I have a number of related questions:
a) what does this heavy outline signify, what is its purpose? It doesnt seem to
be involved with input in any way as it remains when a new cell is selected and
that new cell appears to have the focus as normal.
b) what did i do to get it - if i acctually want this at some future date, how
do i go about getting it?
c) how do i cancel it, and get rid of the heavy outline?

Im using 1:5.2.2-0ubuntu2.1 (which i realise is a bit old but updating will
have to wait until i have internet access on my computer to upgrade)

Thanks
/Gary

[libreoffice-users] paste from calc to writer table

2018-09-29 Thread Gary Collins
Hi
What i'd like to do now is select part of a row of cells in calc and copy the
contents to a corresponding part of a row of cells in a writer table. Can i do
this?
It seems paste (= paste calc) inserts a text box, paste unformatted inserts all
the format marks as characters, paste rtf enters all the text into every
selected writer cell.
Build 1;5.2.2-0ubuntu2.1

Thanks

Re: [libreoffice-users] table spacing default?

2018-09-29 Thread Gary Collins
Thanks for reply, i'll look into that. The tables i am using dont all have the
same dimensions, it's only the spacing below that is (nearly always) the same,
to adequately space the following text from the bottom of the table. I can
always add an extra row at the bottom since my tables are borderless; but if
they weren't this wouldn't be possible. With other rows i can change row height
to alter the spacing but this won't work on the bottom row.

Type U+0161 and then press Alt+X, for example.
 Alt+X is a toggle. You
 can use it also to
look, which code a character has.

Insert special char doesnt seem to be able to
find the chars i want, but
 maybe i'm
 not doing something right.

The special character dialog works, but you
need to know which font has
 a glyph for the
character. Otherwise the character will not be shown in
 the selection pane.

   I have
a workaround using calc; i can enter the hex codes as text
 (row
 1) and (row 2) use a formula
 =UNICHAR(HEX2DEC(A1)) filled acrosd
adjacent column and finally copy row 2 and
 paste as unformatted text
 into writer. This
works but is rather longwinded to say the least. It
does show that its not a problem with the font
 or with writer's ability
 to display the
required chars; its just that i'd like a way to enter

them directly into the writer documext.

Have you looked, whether Ubuntu has a direct
 input method? On Windows it
 is possible to
use the numpad for direct input, although I prefer the
 U+hexnumber method of LibreOffice.

[libreoffice-users] insert before table at start of doc

2018-09-28 Thread Gary Collins
Hi
If i have a writer doc with a table inserted right at the start before any
text, but later i want to insert some lines of text before that table, ive
found i can do this by converting the table to text, inserting the lines and
then converting the text back to table; but is there a less tiresome way? Can i
for example somehow just move the table down, or set the insert point before
the table, or cut and paste the table itself? (it seems that the cut operation
leaves an empty table behind, although subsequent paste *will* paste a new
table and not just the cut table data).
Thanks

individually for each new table, but i haven't found a way to do this. Is it
possible?
Thanks

Thanks for reply; i have indeed used cell mreging to achieve tewuired
formatting, but as for sections, that's given me something new to play around
with.

 Yup.
 o Insert a Section.
o In the section, choose the
 appropriate number of columns. This
applies with your section only, not the
 whole page or document.
o Insert your table in the first
 section.
o Insert a column break in order to
move the insertion point to the
 next column.
 o Insert your second table.
 o Etc.

You can achieve some of this by
judicial merging of table cells - in
this case cells within the one column
of the table but not others, or
 differently in different columns.

 I trust this helps.

[libreoffice-users] table spacing

2018-09-26 Thread Gary Collins
Hi,
I can now answer my own question about spacing to contents in a writer table.
Ive found 2 ways to achieve this. One is to use a custom number format, which
has to be done on an individual cell basis; the other is to update the style
applied to the table contents, this will affect the whole table, or of course a
separate style could be used where required, this would be back to a per-cell
basis

[libreoffice-users] tables: spacing

2018-09-26 Thread Gary Collins
Hi,
I have a writer table in which one column contains numbers and the next
contains text. The numbers are of course aligned right and the text aligned
left; but they run into each other. Is there a way to adjust spacing to
contents (as in calc) or do i have to introduce an empty column between them (
possible, as my table is borderless).
Build 1:5.2.2-0ubuntu2.1
Thanks

[libreoffice-users] strange problem with text flow

2018-09-26 Thread Gary Collins
Hi
Ive got a strange problem which i havent encountered before. Im in writer and
have cut and pasted some text from one doc to another. The problem is that a
page break has appeared between two of the pasted lines which wasnt in the
original document and which i cant remove by positioning the cursor and hiting
delete. There is plenty of space on the page in the target doc for the pasted
text. The problem appears to be in the target document as if i undo the paste
and just type some text and hit enter, i get a page break before the new line
(and no, the ctrl key hasnt got jammed down).
Any ideas what might cause this?
Thanks

[libreoffice-users] Autocomplete can be but...

2018-03-12 Thread Gary Collins
I often find autocomplete extremely useful so i don't like to turn it off; but
it comes complete with its own set of frustrations. I don' t know if developers
read this list so this could well fall onto stoney ground, but IMO - and i
stress that, IMO - it would be nice if:
1) LO could make a distinction between backspace and delete. It is often
inconvenient if, when typing but not looking at the screen, and realising i
have entered a wrong character, to press backspace, enter the character i
should have entered, continue typing, and some time later to spot that the
backspace hasn't worked because it merely cancelled autotype suggestion. I
would suggest that rejecting autotype should be seen as a delete forward
operation (after all, the characters in the suggestion have not been typed yet)
and so delete key should work as it does; but backspace should actually work as
it would without autocomplete and should delete the last character typed (as
well as cancelling the autotype).

2) Hitting enter did NOT accept the autotype, but some other key or
combination of keys was necessary to accept the suggestion; It is just too
easy when entering text to forget to press delete and so end up with a word you
didn't intend, again especially when not looking at the screen, in which case
you wouldn't be aware that autocomplete had kicked in. I'm not sure *what*
exactly i would suggest for this, but it should be something that is not
regularly used to terminate a word or a line to explicitly accept the
suggestion (maybe shift-space??) Having enter accept the suggestion is
particularly tedious when entering text in calc, as it advances to the next
cell and you then have to double click to 'correct' the text.

Just some thoughts, that maybe will set someone else thinking.

[libreoffice-users] autocomplete of selection

2018-03-11 Thread Gary Collins
Hi,
I've noticed that LO has a nasty tendency to try to second-guess what i want
(almost always incorrectly) when trying to select text, automatically
extending my carefully selected start/end point to the beginning/end of a word.
Is there a way to turn off this "festure"? It's extremely irritating. If it's
significant, ive got lo 5.2.2.2 under ubuntu.
Thanks,

Sorry i thought i had replied to list but it seems i was mistaken. Ive got it

[libreoffice-users] automatic fractions

2017-10-30 Thread Gary Collins
Hi
Usually its a useful thing to have fractions like 1/2 converted to a single
character but sometimes its better if the characters are kept separate, eg if
used along with other fractions that dont have a single character
representation, eg 5/7.

Is it possible to cancel the conversion on a one-off basis, ie without having
to alter preferences, conversion tables or whatever?

Thanks

Re: [libreoffice-users] frames

2017-09-20 Thread Gary Collins
It seems using teplace doesnt achieve what i want because if the replacement
image has different proportions from the original it is distorted when it is
inserted and that is exactly what must NOT happen. I want the height of the
images to match but the width to vary as necessary to keep the image ratio
correct.

You can do this - by anchoring the
frames in a header or footer. Note
that the frames themselves do not need
to be physically at the top or
bottom of the page to achieve this:
they can appear anywhere, as long
as the anchors are in the header or
 footer. Unfortunately, this means
that the contents of your frames will
also be identical on each page
 - which is clearly not what you want.

frames to help arrange a multitude of

I suspect this problem cries out for
 using a drawing (Draw) document,
 not a text (Writer) one.
o Set up a single page with your images
 for that page.
o Select the page in the Pages panel.
 o Copy.
o Paste the page - with identical
 images - as necessary.
o In subsequent pages, select each
image in turn and use Insert |
Picture... to replace it with the image
you need there. The new image
 will occupy the same space.

 I trust this helps.

Re: [libreoffice-users] frames

2017-09-20 Thread Gary Collins
Preliminary experiments show thst this could be just what i need, but im having
one msjor difficulty. Is it possible to replace an image within s group without
ungrouping first? I try selecting the image in the group, right click and
replace - which *seems* to do what i want until i try to move e group. Ths
shows me thatt what has actually happened is that the replacement image has
been inserted in the same screen position but is not psrt of the group, it just
overlays the image in the group, which remains the same. Am i doing something
wrong? Or does it not work in the way i thought it would?

that the frames themselves do not need
to be physically at the top or
bottom of the page to achieve this:
they can appear anywhere, as long

that the contents of your frames will
also be identical on each page

 using a drawing (Draw) document,
 not a text (Writer) one.
o Set up a single page with your images
 for that page.
o Select the page in the Pages panel.
 o Copy.
o Paste the page - with identical

Re: [libreoffice-users] frames

2017-09-20 Thread Gary Collins
Thanks Brian. I will play with Draw, havent usedit much before, to see if i can
fairly easily get what i need. Basically for images to be in a 'table'
formation, with text comments on each row. I want each image to have the same
height, but the length of comments, and hence possibly the height of each row
will not necessarily be the same. The ability to easily insert a new row would
be nice, but probably not essential.

[libreoffice-users] frames

2017-09-19 Thread Gary Collins

LO 5.2.2.2 ubuntu 16.10

Hello
I have an arrangement of frames on a page which i would like to exactly
replicate on all successive pages of the document. How do i go about this? Ive
tried saving as a template but a) i dont know if thats right for this and b)
even if it is i dont knoe how to get it to repest on every new page. Simply
loading the ott file doesnt seen to do it.

Is it possible to group frames and move/copy them ss a unit? Ive tried shift
click as per manual and ctrl click and combinations but cant seem to select
more than one frame at a time. And its S tedious moving individual frames.
When i try i find the document suddenly scrolls and the frame ends up in the
wrong place or (more often) disappears completely out of sight and i am forced
to undo and try again. There simply HAS to be a way to do this without pulling
all my hair out???

Thanks
Gary

As an aside i want to use the frames to help arrange a multitude of smallish
images which must be aligned in rows and _ stay_ that way. I think this *might*
be a fairly good way to achieve this but im definitely open to better ideas.

G.

[libreoffice-users] calc macro selected range

2017-09-17 Thread Gary Collins
Hi
Im writing a macro to replace a number of characters with corresponding
alternative chars wherever they occur in strings in a selected cell range. To
accomplish this im currently calling uno:executeSearch multiple times - once
for each character that needs to be changed. Problem is, when the first
character is changed the selected range changes to just those cells that have
been updated. So what i need is either a way to execute the search and replace
that leaves the selected range intact OR a way to read the initial selection
and reset to that selection after search and replace has executed (OR a better
way to go about this altogether). Can anyone help me out?

Thanks,
Gary

[libreoffice-users] calc autofill

2017-09-10 Thread Gary Collins
Hi
Ive noticed what appears to be an anomaly when using autofill (hope thats the
right word) in calc 5.2.2.2 in ubuntu 16.10

To illustrate, open a new spreadsheet and enter 1 in A1 and in C1, and "A1" in
D1 and F1.

Select range A1:F1 and fill down to row 2.

Then A2, C2 contain 2 and D2, F2 contain "A2"; note the strings have been
"incremented" as well as the numbers.

Undo the fill, hide columns B and E, select range A1:F1 and fill down to row 2.

Now A2, C2 contain 2 as expected but D2, F2 contain "A1"; the strings have not
been "incremented.

Does anyone else experience this? It seems véry strange to me but perhaps there
is a good reason for it?

(I have often noted inconsistent behaviour when cells contain strings having
some digit characters. Personally im not sure that "iincrementing" strings is
such a good idea anyway. Sometimes it is a help, often i find it a hindrance.
But in any case it would be good to know if precise behaviour is documented
somewhere)

Best

Re: [libreoffice-users] cant find main menu in ubuntu window

2017-09-02 Thread Gary Collins
Hi,
Thanks for the replies. Ive located my problem. As i said i'm new to ubnuntu
and i hadn't realised that the main menu is "migrated" from the LO window to
the main ubuntu header bar at the top of the screen. I did spend some time
installing updates and things so i dont know if that was also part of the
solution. As i said ive got quite a bit to learn over the next few weeks
especially and will have to get used to new ways of doing things.

 Hi,

it looks like you are not on your own. I found
 a link

There is a suggestion that you
get updates. I have seen this shown as a
solution elsewhere if you feel confident.

Strangely (to my mind) some less obtrusive characters with
higher unicode *dont* work. Its a bit of a mystery whats
going on, i can only surmise that there is somewhere a table
of 'blacklisted' characters which are not taken into
account for sorting purposes. This new (ish) sort order lark
has been a right pain in the proverbials for me, generally

Strangely (to my mind) some less obtrusive characters with
higher unicode *dont* work. Its a bit of a mystery whats
going on, i can only surmise that there is somewhere a table
of 'blacklisted' characters which are not taken into
account for sorting purposes. This new (ish) sort order lark
has been a right pain in the proverbials for me, generally

Re: [libreoffice-users] sort order

2017-03-12 Thread Gary Collins
Got it! I can replace the ''A" in my "Aa" with Greek alpha (or with Russian
'A') and it works perfectly, with the minor exception that the non English
characters look as if they have come from a different font. But I can live with
that, I think it's the best solution possible.

Thanks

Re: [libreoffice-users] regular expression for calc

2017-03-12 Thread Gary Collins
Hi Brian
I wish i could say it did help but unfortunately not. It works with the whole
cell contents but doesnt seem to pick out a word within the cell. For instance,
one of my list has contents "X1 G43". Now if I have "X1 G43" in the cell Xn
(using your example) i get count 1 returned which is correct; but if i have
"X1" in cell Xn it returns 0, which is clearly wrong (at least as far as my
requirements are concerned). And yes, i do have regular expressions enabled in
Calc > Calculate. My version is 5.2.2.2 x64 and im using 64bit windows 7.

 Try
 =COUNTIF(range;"\b"&"\b")
 - where "range" represents the column of data and Xn
 represents the
cell containing the code to be counted. Remember that you
 need to
have Tools | Options... | LibreOffice Calc | Calculate |
 Enable
regular expressions in formulae ticked (which is the case by
 default).

 I trust this helps.

Re: [libreoffice-users] vlookup case

2017-03-11 Thread Gary Collins
Wow! Thanks i'll look into that and maybe try to adapt it. The strings are of
variable length from 1 to 3 characters. What i came up with (bypassing VLOOKUP
altogether) was
=CONCATENATE (MID ($J$2, FIND(LEFT (A2,1), $J $3),1),IFERROR(MID($J$2, FIND
(MID (A2,2,1), $J $3),1," "),IFERROR (MID ($J $2,FIND (MID (A2,3,1), $J
$3,1),1," "))

(I think); which takes each character from the string in A2, gets the position
of that character in the string held in J2, then extracts the corresponding
character from the string held in J3 and concatenates it to the result. In the
case of the string being less than 3 characters, MID () will return an error
which will result in " " concatenated instead. Null string would have been
better but in my case space works just as well.

Its very cumbersome (and more so because in my actual file the strings J2 and
J3 are in fact located on a different sheet); but it does what i need and thats
all i demand of it!

Best
Gary

 I was doing some testing
with single characters, but then saw it was three
characters. Originally, just used the code of
 the character, changed code to
 ascii, but
with 3 multiple each value to get a number that matched.
In both put the row number in next column.

Put the match field in C15
both the formulas work, both formulas give the
 row.

[libreoffice-users] sort order

2017-03-11 Thread Gary Collins
Hello
Id like to know if there is a character, preferably some sort of discreet
punctuation mark, that will come *after* z in the sort order when using natural
sort. My problem is that i have some codes beginning Aa which really speaking
should come after Z. As a number of up to 3 digits follows the letter(s) in
each case, im getting A# followed by Aa# then B# which really wont do. I have
to use natural sort as i need eg A12 to come after A3. Ive tried a few
punctuation characters and some special characters but i cant find one that
works. Any light that can be shed on this would be very welcome indeed. I
really dont want to have to precede Aa with a z if that can possibly be avoided.
Thanks
Gary

[libreoffice-users] regular expression for calc

2017-03-11 Thread Gary Collins
Apologies if this appears twice; im not sure if there was a problem with
sending...

Hello,
I have a column each row of which contains a sequence of one or more codes
separated by a space. In case it will make a difference each code consists of a
letter (ooccasionally 2 letters) followed by a number of up to 3 digits (and
occasionally ends with a letter) eg X1 Aa12 D7a etc.

I want to obtain a regular expression for COUNTIF that will enable me to find
out how many times a particular code, contained in another cell, occurs in the
column. I was thinking that \b to detect the word boundaries should help but i
cant quite get it to work; im not sure if this is because it is assuming a word
boundary between the letter and the number or if it is simply my incompetence
as usual.

Does anyone have an idea what may be the best way to achieve this?

Thanks
Gary

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: sorting in calc

2017-03-10 Thread Gary Collins
Thanks, yes, theres some really helpful info in this reply. I had thought of
using a lower value but it hadnt occurred to me to hide it using formatting
(and of course i didnt want it to show). The methods of converting to text are
very useful to know. In the end i did indeed use the TEXT function in a
formula, and conditionally substituted a blank where the string was shorter.
Again not exactly elegant but it works and thats the main thing. It would be
helpful to be able to define a nonstandard sort order but i dont think thats
easily possible in a case like this (?: but im very willing to be proved wrong
on that ) Again i think i'd be into the realm of macros!

Thanks

 What
about some value less than any of your real
data are (or can be)? What is the range of your

numerical values? In practice, this is
 unlikely
to span the entire range that Calc
 can handle. If
 your values are all positive
 and non-zero, for
 example, then zero will
 do. Otherwise a sentinel
 value such as -999
 might suffice.

 If you
don't want this number to appear in your
list, you can hide it using Conditional
Formatting with a cell style having its font

colour set to white (or whatever is your
 cell
 background colour). Alternatively, you
 can set
the cell format of your range
itself to something like [WHITE][<=0]0;0 .

But the number would still be
 there, of course,
 so you'd have to take
 care if you did any
 calculations on the
 range such as AVERAGE().

 No: changing format of cells
 already containing
 values never changes the
 stored values
 themselves. But there are two
alternative easy ways to do this:

 o In another column, enter
 =TEXT(Xn;"0") (or
 whatever is a
 suitable format string).
 o Fill down the
 column.
o Select the new values and cut.
o Paste them over the originals, but using Edit
 |
 Paste Special... (or Ctrl+Shift+V),
 selecting
Numbers but not Formulae in the
 Paste Special dialogue.

 o
 Select the range of values.
 o Go to Data |
 Text to Columns... .
 o In the Text to
 Columns dialogue, under Fields,
 click on
the column header (probably currently Standard).
o In the "Column type" drop-down,
 select Text.
 o OK.

So this table must indeed have a small, finite

range of values (presumably integers) in

 range instead of the blank
 character or empty

Re: [libreoffice-users] vlookup case

2017-03-10 Thread Gary Collins
Thanks for very helpful reply. It does seem to be a big drawback with these
functions. I'll certainly try it but ive found a workaround that im using at
the mo: ive defined two strings in adjacent cells and using string functions to
find the position of a character in one string then extract the corresponding
character from the other. Much less elegant and it was quite tiresome to
implement but ive at least got it to work, in the limited cases that im using
it so far. If i extend it to transliterate strings of arbitrary length (for now
the max length ive needed is 3 chars) then i guess i'll probably have to get
into macros.
Thanks
G.

Suppose your array has the values to be searched in column A
 and the
values to be returned in column B. Then try:
 =INDEX(B1:Bn;MATCH(1;EXACT("text";A1:An);0))
Note that this is an array formula, so when you have entered
 it you
must complete the process by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Enter. If
 you do
this successfully, the entire formula will appear in the
 Input line
surrounded by braces, but you cannot simply type these
 braces yourself.

This relies on EXACT() being the one function that *is*
 case-sensitive.

 I trust this helps.

[libreoffice-users] named data ranges

2017-03-09 Thread Gary Collins
Hello again
I appear to be experiencing a problem with named data ranges lo 5.2.2.2 x64 win
7.

Q. Is it possible and permissible to define overlapping data ranges? I want a
range named mdec which will be A1:B25 and another xlit B1:C25 (the col B values
are common) to use in lookups.

I have set them up and they appear ok in the Define Database Range dialog.
However, when i try to enter xlit as the range in a formula i find that it
automatically gets changed to mdec.

Im going now to try with the ranges defined explicitly instead of using the
names, but i wonder if this problem sounds at all familiar to anyone, and if
theres anything i can do about it?

Thanks
Gary

Re: [libreoffice-users] sorting in calc

2017-03-09 Thread Gary Collins
Hello all,
Ive managed to solve my problem in a roundabout way. To give the context, i
have a column containing strings of length 1 to 3 which may contain nonstandard
characters and which i must sort in a specific order (not the usual alphabetic
order). To achieve this i have a table assigning a number (col B) to each char
(col A) in sheet 2, defined as a range 'xlit'. On sheet 1 column A has strings
to be sorted, columns B-D contain number to represent char 1,2,3 of the string.
I obtain these numbers as text, using a formula of the form
=IFERROR(TEXT(VLOOKUP(MID (Ax,y,1),xlit,2,0),"General"")," ")
where x is the row containing the string and y is 1,2 or 3 for the appropriate
char of the string, returning the number as a string or " "if the character
doesnt exist (string is of shorter length). I can now order my strings by
sorting on columns B,C,D in that order. Perhaps there might have been an easier
way to do it, but it works and thats what counts

Format>cells>numbers and selecting text doesnt do it,
at least not in 5.2.2.2 under windows7. The format *appears*
to change in that the numbers become left justified like
strings but istext (cell) still returns false

[libreoffice-users] 'Accumulating' styles

2016-12-19 Thread Gary Collins
Hi,
Is it possible to accumulate character styles? By which i mean, i have, eg a
char style for a coloured background, applied to certain text selections. I
have another char style for small caps, applied to certain words in the text.
Now if one of those words also occurs in one of the coloured background
sections, is it possible to apply the small caps style without losing the
coloured background style that is already there? Or is it necessary to create a
unique style for each possible combination of features that may be required in
a text?
Thanks

Thanks for reply, Dave. I just tried this and it doesnt seem to work for

were apparently set as direct formatting in the original doc, which i think was
got by cut and paste from a pdf original. I now want to convert properly to

[libreoffice-users] Style from selection

2016-12-15 Thread Gary Collins
Hi,
A rather basic question: how do i create a new style from selection (lo 5.2.2.2
x64)? The guide i have says to click the new style from selection icon in the
styles and formatting window. Trouble is, i can't seem to find it. I have a new
style icon with a dropdown but that doesn't have a from selection option. And
it doesn't seem to be an option in the styles menu. I've tried looking for a
button in the modify toolbar window, but no joy there either. But it *must* be
somewhere?
Thanks,

[libreoffice-users] Strange things happening with page count

2016-12-14 Thread Gary Collins
Hi,
I have a long document (writer 5.2.2.2, x64; win7) which was fine until i
changed some of the defined colours (tools>options>color ; changed rgb settings
for some colours with modify). After OK the document went 'jittery;' i saved
and quit. When i reopened, all my footnotes seem to have been displaced and
the page count at bottom left began at around 999 (which i think is too low)
and gradually started decreasing; currently at 27 where it seems to have
stabilised. Scrolling through the document shows page boundaries seem to have
disappeared. Any idea what's going on?

[libreoffice-users] Remove applied character style

2016-12-13 Thread Gary Collins
Hi,
My question: is it possible to remove an applied character style from a text
selection without changing anything else?
Situation: i have a character style which i apply to individual words and
phrases in footnotes. If i apply this style to the last word in the footnote
(quite frequent), then make edits in the main text , possibly adding further
footnotes, then decide to add some words to the end of that footnote, the added
words will also have that character style applied. That is not usually what i
want. Can i remove the style from the added words only?

Thanks,

[libreoffice-users] Marginal references

2016-11-14 Thread Gary Collins
Hi,
I'm wanting to prepare a document in writer with a main text body(justified)
and marginal references on the right (and possibly also different ones on the

be tied to their relevant paragraphs. If a subsequent reference is added and
this makes the references exceed the height of the paragraph, following
paragraphs must shift down to accommodate. Is there a way to achieve this?
Thanks

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: How to find out which fonts are used in an Open Document?

2016-02-09 Thread Gary Collins
I have a vague recollection of this, or something very like it, cropping up
before. If it is not already an area marked for development, I think it should
certainly be. I think that if a font is being replaced, the reader of the
document should be given the ability to easily ascertain that this is the case.
Perhaps somewhere in document properties there should be a tab or something to
list the names of each font used in the document, giving original name together
with associated replacements, if a replacement font has been used; and/or an
option to open a dialog box for any font not found, and the replacement that
will be used, at the time of opening a document.

Indeed it does show the original font but it is not efficient to have to
click on every text box on every slide to check the font (especially because
several fonts can be used in a single text box).

I'm really hoping that someone has a magical extension that does this :P

[libreoffice-users] Inconveniences of time format

2015-10-31 Thread Gary Collins
Hi

I've got a column in calc 4.3.2.2 to contain the length of video clips; it's
formatted to Time>876613:37:46.

The first inconvenience is that, when using autoincrement the times are
incremented not by 1 second but by 24 hours.

Whilst i understand that this is due to the way date/time is stored, with the
date as integer and the time as fraction, i think it is not exactly intuitive.
I feel that it might be much more convenient if LO would take the formatting
into account and increment by 1 second (or, to be more precise, by 1 LSD to
the chosen format).

Similarly, when entering such times i think it would be more helpful to give
precedence to the LSD, so entering 8, for example, would be interpreted as 8
seconds (rather than 8 hours as is cuŕrently the case) and 8:40 as 8m40s.
Again, this interpretation should be format dependent.

What does anyone else think?

Re: [libreoffice-users] copying text with formatting from a web page

2015-10-20 Thread Gary Collins
I've just tried this in firefox. A couple of things:

1) access to the file save option seems to be indirect - but maybe there is a
way to customise this, I haven't got time to check at the moment; but

2) much more importantly - it does indeed save as a single file, but the
formatting is *awful* nothing like the original page, and pictures, graphics,
etc are not there - just links. That's not what I want to see when  I open a
webpage file, I want to see the page (more or less) the same as it was
originally when I opened it online.

Which raises another issue: I save pages for later viewing on a machine that
doesn't have an internet connection. I'm assuming that an internet connection
will be essential to follow any of the hyperlinks in the file, which would
render the format useless for my purposes.

Hi :)  I've just seen that option in Chrome too.  It's a little more awkward.
From the icon with 3 horizontal lines go down to "More Tools".  Then "Save
page" gives a dialogue with options at the bottom to save as a single file or
as proper html.
Thanks Jorge!  It's nice to find or be told about these things :)  Regards from

2015-10-16 Thread Gary Collins
Tom,
That's a good suggestion, perhaps I should have thought of it. I will give it a
go. In general, I use MS because it has been the only one I know capable of
handling .mht files, and I save web pages using that format because I find it
*much* more convenient to have the page saved in a single file, rather than as
a file plus a folder. Perhaps other browsers can now open these files now? I
don't know, I haven't got around to checking recently. You know how it is, you
find something that works for you and just stick with it - kind of inertia.
I had a reply privately from Brian, though, which suggested that it might be
due to the type of formatting used in the .css - using "vertical-align", and if
so, that LO probably wouldn't recognise it. I checked the file in a text editor
and that is indeed how the superscripting is generated in these pages.
I have since found a workaround which is not the most convenient but will at
least allow me to get done what I need to get done.

Hi :)  So Microsoft's Internet Explorer only plays well with Microsoft Office?
Err, is there any surprise there?
Have you tried with other web-browsers?  Internet Explorer often seems to be a
pos imo and ime.  Each release of it seems to have a load of different 'issues'
handling internationally agreed standards (yes, Microsoft ARE involved in
setting those standards!).  So websites sometimes have to write extra code
specifically aimed at certain versions of IE.  At best IE seems to behave more
like a trojan as it's so often found to have remarkable security issues.  MS
usually put out at least 1 or more security patch per fortnight to deal with
some critical problem or other.
Please, please, please try Chrome, Safari, Opera, or anything else.  Even
Firefox's worst releases appear to be better than IE.  There are a huge range
of web-browsers available for free and quite easy to download and install.
Personally i would probably paste anything off a website as plain-text and then
add back the formatting myself.  There are a few websites i kinda trust but in
general i'd try to avoid risking pulling dodgy formatting and what-ever else
across into another program/app.
Sorry for the tone here!  Good luck with all this! Many apols sand regards from
Tom :)

Hi,
I'm copying some text from a web page (windows explorer) into a Writer doc; the
text copies OK, but I can't seem to preserve superscripting. I've tried normal,
HTML format and formatted text [RTF] as paste options; I can get attributes
such as colour pasted, but can't seem to get that superscript. MS Word OTOH
does preserve the superscript attribute, so it must be there on the clipboard.
Is there a way of coaxing this information into Writer?
Thanks,/Gary

Re: [libreoffice-users] copy cell format

2015-09-18 Thread Gary Collins
I think the problem being experienced is that the column widths are not copied
or adjusted to fit the contents. The best I can think of is to paste the data,
then select it and use Format>Column>optimal width. This may not be quite what
is required, but it may at least help a bit. /Gary

Sorry for just replying to email vs getting into LO and answering.  Just too
busy with huge biking event this weekend and am new using LO forums.

That said, if I understand that you want to copy the data from 1 spread
sheet file (1 or more rows/columns) and paste just the data into a file with
different column/row formatting, then use the "Paste Special" option and
only check the items in the "Paste Special" pop-up menu that you want.  Do
not check "Format" and the column/row format will remain unchanged.

Of course, the number of rows/columns you paste into should equal what you
copied.

Subject: [libreoffice-users] copy cell format

Good evening
I have been trying to find hints in the documentation, but had no
success so far.

I have (naturally) a number of sheets / files.
Sometimes I want to copy let's say the first row, which contains all the
names of the columns etc., to create a new document.
(not ALL documents use the same format)
Imagine there are 20-25 columns, most of which have different widths.

But when I copy row No.1 from file A to a new file, no matter HOW I
paste it there,
it ALWAYS comes out with equal column width (+ the default height of the
new document).
That means, I have to reformat the whole thing EVERY time I do this.
(not frequently, but also not a rare operation)

In an ancient but VERY useful software = Lotus123 that requires only
checking one box.

If I understand the page:
https://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Copying_Attributes_With_the_Format_Paintbrush
correctly,
"Form control is selected    Not supported"
means that Calc is not able to do what Lotus could do 20 years ago.
Is that right? Or am I missing something?
I am also under the impression, that the "paint brush" works ONLY within
one file, but not across different files.

Styles do not help either (as far as I can tell), since I could not find
any tab there, where I can specify column width + height.

Is there a trick?
Is so, I would really like to know.

Thank you.
Thomas

[libreoffice-users] Can't start up LO5 any more

Hi,
I'm experiencing some problems; installed LO5 yesterday (windows) and it was
working fine; earlier this morning I had some docs open and it still seemed
fine. All documents have now been closed, but I can't seem to start up LO5 any
more.I've tried: double clicking a file in windows explorer
double-clicking a file saved to desktop (I suspect thi is exactly the same
thing)
double-clicking LO5 startup icon on desktop
selecting LO5 from start menu

- all to no avail. I checked the task manager in case it was somehow running in
an invisible mode (such things do happen - but no, it's not running at all
and I can't get it to run.
I will try a reboot at some stage - can't do that just yet - but does anyone
have any idea what might be preventing LO from running? Anyone else experienced
anything similar?
thanks,/Gary

Just checked task manager again. Although LO was not listed under the
applications tag, it seems there were *dozens* of soffice.bin and soffice.exe
entries under the processes tag. deleting on of them suddenly opened up a
whole load of document windows on my desktop - and also terminated the majority
of those processes in the TM. I suspect this is something that shouldn't
happen, but I'm not sure how I arrived at this state.

Yeah, this happens sometimes, it is not new to 5...

You got a 'zombie' process for each time you tried to launch it without
success.

So, the first time you try to launch it and nothing happens, don't keep
doing it, check for the zombie process right away, it will save you some
time.

This happens with other windows apps too, dunno why...

I have tried that and it worked. What I did:

Select a large numer of columns in Calc, and set the columns to the required
width.
You can then merge pairs of cells. Actually you don't have to do all of them.
If you have 4 or 5 merged cells, just copy these a number of times to the other
columns.
And then you copy this to another row starting at the second cell, so that it
gets indented.

Now if you copy/paste these to Writer they seem to keep their widths. But you
have to use Edit Paste Special Formatted Text. For me the column widths are
preserved. O, yes, if you do something with the column widths in Writer, with
Table Properties Columns, select 'Adapt table width'. This causes the table
width to follow the sum of the column widths instead of being fixed.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Question about LO Writer and complex documents

2015-07-31 Thread Gary Collins
I think that register is an important consideration. Colloquial language tends
to be in a state of flux and dictionaries will always lag behind. Formal
language tends to be far more conservative, and that, I think, is where
proper is likely to be a more important consideration.

Is either more correct than the other? Not really. It depends on the nature
and purpose of the communication. But improper use of words and grammar will,
of course, give the impression that the communicator has been poorly
educated. (Again, that could be considered a loaded concept.) Where making
a good impression is important, dictionaries are very useful tools indeed.

Re: [libreoffice-users] table with offset between rows

2015-07-30 Thread Gary Collins
Ah, I think I didn't state my problem clearly, as usual!
What I mean is, I want the cells of the bottom row to be offset by half a cell
horizontally from those in the top row, so that the vertical borders of the top
row come halfway across the cells of the bottom row.

(I'm doing a comparison of chronologies. Each cell width is to represent one
year, but the starting point of the year for the bottom row is shifted by six
months from the year start in the top row.)

Technically, it should be possible to merge cells alternately, but there'll be
a heck of a lot of cells (as many as I can reasonably get on a landscape page
and still have room for a few characters in each cell; I'll have to experiment,
but I reckon at least 40 - 50 in a row) so unless there's a way of automating
that, it's out of the question.
I'm guessing I'll have to have a separate table for each row; in principle
that's not a problem; but I haven't worked out how to align the two tables (in
writer); they seem always to expand to fill the page width and are quite
difficult to resize afterwards. I'm guessing there must be a way to do this, I
just haven't found it yet. If possible, I'd like to make the first cell of the
row wider and have the rest adjust to a common width to the end of the table,
but at the moment, at least, that's icing on the cake.

I've tried importing a selected row of cells from calc into draw to do this, in
theory I think this ought to work well, but the problem I'm experiencing there
is that cell size and formatting don't seem to be preserved when pasting the
row.

I don't really mind how  I achieve it, as long as it's not too tedious!

Thanks,
/Gary

Make a table with 3 rows.
Select the middle row and with Table Properties Borders select only the top

With the same row selected: Format Paragraph Indents Spacing, select Line

Re: [libreoffice-users] LO Draw to PS shapes

2015-07-30 Thread Gary Collins
Hi Tomyes, PS can handle formats like that, but I want to actually add the
shapes into the custom shape tool, which requires the .csh format. Full-blown
photoshop can handle creation of new shapes, but I use an early version of
Elements which doesn't have that functionality; hence my need to find some
alternative if at all possible.
I checked inkscape, but that doesn't give the .csh format either.

Hi :)
Inkscape has a lot of formats by default but i don't remember noticing
.csh.  Perhaps an add-on / Extension / plug-in?

Interesting to hear Photoshop is so limited.  Can it not handle standard
formats such as .Svg or .Eps?

It's not hugely surprising to hear it can't cope with Open Formats such
.Odg.  This is a typical problem of proprietary programs.  By limiting
their ability to use non-proprietary formats it can force people into
vendor lock-ins.  The problem is created by the proprietary tools but
somehow it's the OpenSource ones that get the blame and 'have to' solve it.

Open Source tools open things up to freely available formats that anyone
can use in any suitable program and in the future it will be relatively
simple to create tools that can read files saved in such open formats.
Proprietary formats keep changing and so it becomes increasingly difficult
to read older files.

Tom :)

2015-07-23 Thread Gary Collins
The company I used to work for manufactured mass spectrometers and we used PDP
11s with software written in PASCAL to control the instruments and gather and
present the data they generated. The biggest pain in the neck was having to use
overlays to swap parts of the program code into and out of memory as required.
These days, that sort of thing happens quite transparently, and unless you're
into writing operating systems, it's not the sort of thing you're likely to
come across.

Hi :)
PDP11s look interesting!

A short article that claims the default OS was Multics;
http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/PDP-11-Programmed-Data-Processor-11
but that many put Unix on it.  Wikipedia gives a great long list of OSes that
ran on or could run on PDP11s;

As you can see in the url below Nuclear Power Plants are apparently still using
and plan to continue using PDP11's until 2050 !

a full general ledger accounting system using COBOL.  Have you even tried to
write a data entry system for an accounting system, so people could not type in
the wrong info/data - like Feb 29th for a non-leap year or an account number
that is not created, or other values that are not within the proper any of the

Yes, I remember those data cassette tape drive computers, before you could
afford a dual floppy IBM PC/AT/XT clone.  Then there were those 10 MEG hard

I saw the introduction of the PC based

CD ROM drive, then burner

Real Graphics above 640 by 480

I saw the introduction of the Bulletin board system that was interconnected so
you had a primitive email address - mine was almost 80 characters long.

I saw the start of the WWW part of the Internet, which is what is now THE
Internet, since most of the other parts [terminal based mostly] have either
died or been converted to use a browser.  Of course there are still parts
that run via the terminal which I still use from time to time - mostly local to
server communications.

The domain I use for this email address - I own -  was first created in the
early '90, when you only had 14.4 dialup for most areas of the US, and has gone
from one domain service to another, and my hosting service from one to another,
till I finally settled on the one[s] I have been using for many years now.

Yes I have seen the wireless phone go from the big brick technology through
to the introduction of the smart phone technology.  I now use a LG base model
Android phone, since I do not need all of the wow-wee stuff.  I do not need to
use it for my every computer need, like some are touted.

I have bought 3 Android tablets over the years.  I still use 2 of them.  And
no, I do not like the hype of not needing a larger system - laptop or desktop -
since a Android, IOSx, or MS OS claims it will do everything you will need.  My
desktop I am typing this from is an old 4 core running Linux Mint 16 with 4
hard drives internal, 1 OS and 3 data drives - adding up to 6.25 TB - with 3
external 2 TB drives for backup.  I use to have 4 backup, till an internal 2TB
drive failed and I needed my spare to replace it.

I really wonder how you could get a tablet to have 6 TB of data storage.  I
also like to see these tablets find printer drivers to run the USB or network
printing.  I have enough trouble tryng to find a working Linux [.deb] printer
driver for my newer printers, and I have not been able to get any of my android
tablets to access any of my colored printers - just a older HP laser printer.
I now look for Linux drivers BEFORE I decide to buy the printers.

I have gone from punched card data entry to web-based data entry screens.
I have gone from cassette tapes, through to floppies, internal/external hard
drives, USB flash drives and SD cards.
I have seen mainframe computers the size of a bedroom, down to a refrigerator.
I have seen the IBM PC come out

My first home computer was a BBC micro (anyone remember those?) That was back
in the days when programming had to be really tight, only had 32Kb (yes, Kb) of
RAM; long term storage was all external on cassette tapes, eventually upgraded
to floppy disk drive (and the disks really were floppy). I've still got that
computer and AFAIK it still works!
My next machine was Acorn Archimedes, followed by RISC PC. It's a great shame
that the marketing for those machines was so poor, leading to collapse of the
company. The ARM chips had a great architecture and instruction set.
After that, I got my first laptop, a Sony Vaio running windows XP. When I
upgraded, which I was forced to do due to a machine failure, I got a laptop
running Windows 7 - which is still my current machine. A better Windows, once
I'd got used to it, but it had a real downer - couldn't get driver for my
flatbed scanner - Canon didn't produce one.
At work, in my first job I used a computer called a PDP 11 (ghastly thing);
can't remember what the OS was called.
In my second job I think we started off with some sort of mainframe, the
details of which are hazy now. Later we migrated to Sun Spark workstations.
In my last real job, used PCs running windows, I think it was XP at that time.
Now in my office based voluntary work I use PCs with Windows 7. Did have a play
with Win 8 on a laptop, but hated it. It might be OK for tablets, I don't know,
but it was horrible to use with normal PC input devices.
I have thought about upgrading to Linux but have never got around to it. This
is mainly because of familiarity with certain software packages, especially
Photoshop. I know there is GIMP for Linux, but it's not a patch - for one
thing, it doesn't have the concept of adjustment layers; and that means that
all my working files, which tend to be saved as TIFF with layer compression,
can't be properly loaded and edited in GIMP.I also make use of a video editor
(not free but fairly inexpensive) which can edit MPEG2 files without reencoding
unchanged parts of the video, which makes it quite fast and doesn't lose
quality. Something like that probably does exist for Linux but I haven't got
around to looking, and familiarity is a big part of the story.Another thing is
the convenience of plug and play when it comes to hardware - I don't think I've
ever had to manually load a driver, everything seems to work out of the box
and that's a very good thing, saves a lot of time and effort. I'm not sure what
Linux is like in that respect, as I've had no experience.
On my phone I have android and I tend to get on reasonably well with that.
I'm not sure what I will do if I ever need to change computer again.
