*In the versions before LibreOffice 5.x, whenever I saved something, the
SAVE tool was dimmed. If I did not save something, it was NOT dimmed. If
was easy and convenient for me to be able to know whether I saved something
or not. If it was not dimmed, I could easily click the SAVE tool, and it
was esily saved, easier and less time-consuming than going to FILE > SAVE
or SAVE AS. *

   Curiously wondering why you'd want this to be dimmed;
if it were so, then you would be unable to save the document ;-)

I updated my LibreOffice for Windows, and I am using 5.1.2.2. Several days

something.

I attempted to go to

I unchecked it, but I found that nothing changed.

How can I dim the SAVE tool when I save something?

Do you have

This sometimes means that the save button does not dim as you can still
save again.

Just a thought

[libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Damaged

2015-09-11 Thread Taang Zomi
I had my laptop computer (Toshiba Satellite L55-B5276; Windows 8.1)
repaired, and when I got it back, I found that my LibreOffice (4.4.4) could
not be used. I got a message:

==

LibreOffice 4.4.4 -- Fatal Error
---
The program cannot be started.

The service manager is not available.

("premature end of file:///C:/Users/
Taang/AppData/Roaming/LibreOffice/4/user/uno_packages/cache/registry/com.sun.star.comp.deployment.component.PackageRegistryBackend/commom.rdb")

Start setup application to repair indtallation from CD, or the folder
containing the installation packages.

[OK]

==

I did not understand what the message meant.

Thinking that I could repair it, I went to the folder where I saved the
program, and I clicked the program twice. When the the time came for
installation, I clicked "repair", and it was successfully installed. But
when I clicked LibreOffice 4.4.4 twice, the same message appeared.

Every time I clicked LibreOffice 4.4.5, 5.0.0 and 5.0.1, I got the same
message, except for the heading, which changed to

LibreOffice 4.4.5 -- Fatal Error
LibreOffice 5.0.0 -- Fatal Error
LibreOffice 5.0..1 -- Fatal Error

How can I use my LibreOffice again? What do I need to do?

Sincerely,

Taang Zomi

You mentioned 4 LO versions. From what I know on Windows it's not possible
to install more than one unless you use a specific software which name i
can't recall at the moment.

So the question is: why do you have so many version installed? And how did
you install them?

Thank you for telling me that it s inappropriate for me to cc individuals
in a list email. One of the email addresses is mine, and the two other
email addresses belong to two people who helped me in the past.

Yes, I paid t have it repaired. And yes, I would go back to them.

Did you pay to have it repaired? If so, maybe take it back to that place
and say they corrupted your software and you need it fixed.

BTW - I'm not sure if I'm speaking out of line but it's generally a no-no
to cc individuals on list emails ;) Just because they've helped you before
does not imply that they want to be cc'ed every time you need help as then
it's almost as if they are your not-paid personal support system :-D

Just for future reference - again, maybe they don't mind at all, but
generally on mailing lists it's frowned upon to cc people unless they've
explicitly told you that it's okay.

Best,
Joel

be turned right-to-left vertical. What I wanted was to turn it

Yes, this is possible with LibreOffice 4.4.

You can select if the text in a Table cell is rotated by 90 or 270 degrees.
You define this is Paragraph Style Position Rotation

Hope this helps.

*Dear Pedro,*

*Thank you for your kind participation.*

*You define this is Paragraph Style Position Rotation*

*I cannot find this. *

*I can only find Format -- Character -- Position -- Rotation*

*But to rotate a character is not what I want. I want the whole table to
rotate.*

Hi :)
Kinda ignore the 4th digit. It's the 3rd one that is much more important.

The 3rd digit is a lot like the Service Pack numbers used by Microsoft.
Just divide our 3rd digit by 2 and round down.

So, when you say 4.4.2, that is roughly like having Sp1 on the 4.4.x
branch. It is good but a lot of people would wait for the x.x.4. The
4.4.1 is in the same branch but doesn't have as many bug-fixes as the
4.4.2 Both have all the same functionality but the x.x.2 has solved more
problems and quirkiness so it is likely to be more easier to use.

The 3.3.6 has a very high Sp number. Sp3. So it's had all the bug-fixes
and smoothing out that it's branch is going to get. However the first
two digits show that it's quite an old branch now. A bit like having
Windows 98 with Service Pack 3. It's very solid and reliable but it lacks
a LOT of functionality (and compatibility with Microsoft formats) so it is
probably a good idea to upgrade.

In your position i would guess that 4.3.6 would be an ideal version for
you. 4.3.5 would be ok. 4.3.4 would probably be tolerable.

I try to give my clients and colleagues versions with a high Sp number,
almost definitely over x.x.3 - but for myself i try to use the newer branch
so i can try to spot any problems or even positive new things that my
friends and colleagues might have trouble adjusting to.

I hope that clarifies things a little bit! Does any of that help you
understand more about the version numbers or does it still seem a bit
random?
Regards from
Tom :)

With any module opened--Writer for example-- from the Main menu, check
enable the View -- Sidebar feature.

Default docked position will be on the left side of frame.

The Styles and Formatting Content panel is the second Tab button under
Properties.

The Sidebar can be undocked from the right side and float. Or it can be
docked left side.

If you are not seeing the Styles and Formatting content panel in the
Sidebar that would be a real problem suggesting configuration errors
needing a clean user profile, and maybe another round of installation.

So, make sure the Sidebar feature is checked active. Also, that it is not
collapsed onto the right margin (unchecking and checking from the View menu
should open it).

Post back if having done that you do not see the Sidebar with the Styles
and Properties panel.

No bug, the Styles and Formatting dialog window was removed for the 4.4
release.

It is now only present as a Content panel in the Sidebar Deck. The F11 key,
or Styles Formatting button, will open the content panel in the Sidebar.

Sidebar opens by default to the Properties panel, but should toggle to the
Styles and Formatting panel when accelerator or the toolbar button is used.

Fwd: [libreoffice-users] Styles and Formatting Not Working

2015-03-05 Thread Taang Zomi
As I have written in my first question, I use Windows 8.1.

Complying with Tom's advice, I uninstalled LibreOffice 4.3.5.2, and I got
back Styes and Formatting.

In order to be sure, I uninstalled 4.3.5.2 and installed 4.3.6.2. The
Styles and Formatting remained with 4.3.6.2.

I uninstalled 4.3.6.2 and installed 4.4.0.3. Then I lost the Styles and
Formatting. I uninstalled 4.4.0.3 and installed the lastest version,
4.4.1.2. The Styles and Formatting remained lost.

Then, I uninstalled 4.4.1.2 and installed 4.4.0.3. The Styles and
Formatting was not there.

Finally, I uninstalled 4.4.0.3, and installed 4.3.6.2. I got back the
Styles and Formatting.

So I will stick with 4.3.6.2.

There seems to be a problem with 4.4.0.3 and 4.4.1.2.

Thank you -- Brian, Tom, and Tony -- for your help.

Right. You've still not answered most of the questions - including what

what happened, please, when you tried the various ideas suggested to
retrieve the window?

Er, do you mean that the Styles and Formatting window does not appear? Or
does it appear but then not function in some sense? Can you successfully
select the type of style using the buttons at the top of the Styles and
 Formatting window?

o What happens if you go to Format | Styles and Formatting?
 o Or press F11?
o Or click the Styles and Formatting button in the Formatting toolbar?
 o Or press Alt+O, Y?
o Or click the Styles and Formatting button in the LibreOffice sidebar?

 Have you restarted LibreOffice?

 Have you restarted your computer?

Have you merely lost the window off the screen? Are you using Windows?
o When you press F11 (or whatever), does the LibreOffice title bar become
dimmed - indicating that another window (the one you have lost) has taken
 focus?
o With the main title bar still dimmed, press Alt+Space and then M.
o Press any of the keyboard arrow keys once.
o Now move the mouse until the outline of the missing window is somewhere
 central.
 o Click the mouse.

 German look for their version.

My guess is that your case worked out all right and in the guide they
might have had a previous example at some point in the last 10 years or so
that maybe didn't make it into the version of the guide you are reading.
Also when creating the guides sometimes weird things do happen and there
are never enough people in the team to get everything perfect.

MS Guides only need to be produced to cover 1 release every 3 or 4 years
and they employ tons of people to work on those guides. Their guides cost
quite a lot too so that they can pay people and make a hefty profit.
LibreOffice has a major new branch twice per year and relies on people
volunteering and in the few places where they sell it the prices are
extremely low. Even so most people just download the free versions from
the official website or the wiki. So, it's a completely different bottle
 of crisps.

The Draw and Impress Guides recently got taken on by someone that really
cares about them so quality has jumped up in the last couple of releases
but Math is still a bit iffy, at least until the translations from German
get done. Personally i am hoping the Docs Team are focusing on the Base
Guide this time and maybe worry about Math afterwards but people join the
team to work on issues that concern them and so that's what gets the most
attention. It works well because it means the people working on any
particular guide have a vested interested and are keen to get good quality
 results.

Oh, and if you have one of those keyboards, you probably do need to hold
down the Fn key in order to make the F3 key do its job afterwards!

Indeed, if you have (mis)interpreted the instructions as meaning that you
should hold down the Fn key and then press F3, the error message you quote
is exactly what you would see. On this type of keyboard, you need to type
f, type n, and then hold down the Fn key whilst pressing F3.

Dear Brian,

I do not have the restricted keyboard that you mentioned. There is no fn
key on my keyboard.

Taang Zomi

Then something strange is happening for you that doesn't generally.

I'm running out of ideas. Here's another couple of things to try:

o Open the AutoText dialogue (e.g. by pressing Ctrl+F3 as has been
 discussed).
 o Expand the Standard group.
o Does Formula Numbering appear in the list (as it should)?
o If you select it, does FN appear in the Shortcut box (as it should)?
o If not, someone has customised your set-up and upset the facility.

o At the top of the AutoText dialogue, ensure Display remainder of name
 as suggestion while typing.
 o Close the AutoText dialogue.
o In the text (Writer) document, type For.
o Does a small note window saying Formula Numbering appear?
o Whilst the small window is displayed, press Enter.
o Does the dummy numbered equation now appear?

Dear Brian,

Thank you very much for your reply.

Recently I became interested in linguistic phonology, and so I tried
LibreOffice Math. I rarely tried Math before. So I am a Math novice.

I guide I used was LibreOffice 3.3 Math, which was a bit old. Now I

I have some more questions which I hope I can post here in the near future.

No, I suspect that you are simply not following the advice given. *Don't*

forget about Math for the moment! In a text (Writer) document, type fn

How can I make -continuant, -nasal, and +voice left-justified, as follows?

You may need to reinstall, but first you could try renaming your profile.
I'm
sorry, but I don't know where in Win7 it is kept, but it's around somewhere.
LO will generate a new one on startup. If that works then you can begin

always open in the system-tray and that can interfere with LO. There have
been
other problems too but often people manage to have both so try it and see ;)
 If
you are unlucky both LO and OOo are free so you can try another way until
you
are happy. :)
Regards from
Tom :)

*Can OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice.org co-exist on the same computer?

Or do I need to uninstall OpenOffice.org if I want to install LibreOffice?*

Depends on your OS. For the most part you can install both if you download
from the respective site. Using repositories for some Linux distros has
been reporting problems.

No they can both be installed but the last installed will be the default
for the Open Document Format files. If you using Linux, install LO from
the repository may remove OOo as you install LO. Some distributions have
switched to LO in the next release cycle. I know Ubuntu replaces OOo
when installing from the repository.

With that info, yes they can co-exist as you will download from the
respective servers. Download and install each. You will have to decide
which you wish to be the default for ODF files.
