Re: [libreoffice-users] i have questions about licensing in libreoffice.
The Oracle purchase of Sun allows oracle to claim ownership in application software which the whole world contributed to? Is that correct? Under prior patent law, it was not the first to file but the first to invent the objects of a patent that had the valid claim to actual patent rights? Under current law, I understand it now to be the first to file gets all? Is that correct. How does patent law work? A claim is made by filing the claim with the patent authority Who has a valid claim one who invents or one who files. Think of it this way.. MR. Island discovers how to make an island from the sand found at the ocean bottom.. Mr. Island uses his discovery to produce a brand new island the size of the USA State of say Georgia, The Island is now in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean 450 miles off the shore of New York City. between London and New York City. Dr. Patent, LLB, a Lawyer, sees that the mind of Mr. Island has produced [invented] a very valuable method, A method that many people would pay a lot of money to know about because they too want to build their own private Island in the middle of the ocean. Dr. Patent tells his congress, look guys I want to own the method Mr. Island invented, please change the law so that i can own his method. Congress debated the issue and decided that many wealthy people would like to own the products (inventions) of other people´s minds; so Congress passed a law that lets the person who want to own the Island and the person who desire to own the useful method invented by someone, to be able to claim ownership in the Island and in the method to produce the island. Tangible property law created, out of thin air, ownership rights based on boundary of the property. To claim ownership in the Island file that claim in the form of a deed. Intangible property law created, out of thin air, ownership rights in useful ways to do something. To claim ownership in the method used to build the Island, file a patent. So on with the story, So to claim ownership in the Island (Mr. Island built) Dr. Patent filed a deed, and had a judge order Mr. Island off the Island, because the island is now owned by Dr. Patent This is so, Dr. Patent told the judge, because I have the only deed ever filed to claim ownership in the land. Mr. island has no deed. The judge had no choice but to evict Mr. Island. Dr. Patent told Mr. Island, if you will file a claim of ownership (that is, a patent) in the method used (invented) to build your Island, I will pay you enough for it, so you can live comfortably ever after (say $1 million USD)-. Mr. Island was broke having been kicked off his own Island so he signed the patent claim Dr. Patent wrote up for him, with the Patent office. The patent office issued to Mr. Island a patent, which Mr Island then sold to Dr. Patent for $1 Million USD). So Mr. Island went to another place in the Atlantic and used the method Mr. island invented to build another Island.. and filed a deed claiming he owned it. As soon as Mr. Island moved onto his new Island, Dr. Patent filed a patent lawsuit, claiming Mr. Island, infringed ¨the method to build Islands¨ patent owned by Dr. Patent. The patent court awarded Dr. Patent $1 million USD for patent infringement and ordered Mr. Island to pay Dr. Patent $1 million USD before the day was out. From thin air the congress obliged Dr. Patent, and converted public lands into private ownership by writing the tangible property law (DEEDs) and again from thin air congress created a way to for investors and others to own the products of the human mind of inventors (methods of doing things) intangible property law. Dr. Patent licensed the right to use the patent he obtained from Mr. Island for $500,000; thus far 50 islands have been built using Mr. Islands method owned by Dr. Patent. $500,000 * 50 = $25,000,000 profit earned by Dr. Patent. In short, Congress made it possible for Dr. Patent to steal both Mr. Island´s Island and his invention of a method to build such an island. The story explains why the top 1% own as much as the entire 99% other percent own. Patents and deeds transfer ownership from the public to the private domain, and ownership transfers wealth from non owners. Re: [libreoffice-users] LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Awards - "Office Suite of the Year" - vote
I think one of the premier office suites is LO.. its basically amenable to anyone´s need provided that persons trying to use it develop sufficient understanding to use it, which is usually not the case. What makes LO precious is that no one can buy it to park it. Should Linux Questions reach to the monopoly assistance provided by governments and others to foul LO as a major competitor..denying user access by outlawing a better free product from a costly less product...? Laws and policies which designate allowed product are monopolist.. Seems to me Linux Users might award a wrongful Monopoly of the y;ear award and market the reasons for the award globally. Many people claim that there are no alternatives to MS Office and that "even if there were" they would still have to use it. Many others claim to have tried all the alternatives but that nothing is as good as MS Office. It is good to have a place that consistently rubbishes such idiots. Re: [libreoffice-users] i of the most disturbing things about 5.0 libreoffice
thanks for the reply.. When in 16.04 I pushed f4 or attempted data> Relative/absolute References I got 5.1.4.2 no references found.. reply.. nothing else.. copy from one sheet to another sheet in the same and only open my installed Libre office calc spreadsheet session still gives a full cell by cell reference to the cells in the original copied from sheet.. The newly created by copy sheet its almost as it the reference is working in reverse.. When i want something from another sheet i just type =(sheet name, and then I find the cell in the external sheet and click on it and hit return. ON return I examine the formula content of the cell in my working sheet and find it is referenced to the copied from cell in the external sheet.. virtually the copy mechanism for my purposes remains useless. While i like some features of 5.1.4.2, it is not stable and things have been moved around quite a bit. OK, but more documentation is needed on the help keys and i would be glad to help with some of that,, if needed. What I think is needed is standard training program.. not help in this place or that but in a standard place. using a standard spreadsheet populated with a standardized set of data. Every cell is has the standard known content; that would allow all help and training to be done by example.. as the frustrated learners become familiar with the standard content they will grasp much quicker the instructional intent of the words and the numbers of words needed to explain will be reduced by a lot as everyone will understand and have loaded for the instruction the standard content training module. this would be extremely useful when upgrades and version changes move things around .. It would also make it possible fore everyone to understand where to send persons looking for answers.. for example got to standard training module 9ll that explains what to do or how to and that training modules always works with the standard content spread sheet.. Try "un-anchoring" or setting cells to "Relative References" (no "$" in the formulas) before copy & paste. Absolute references ($'s) can be set for the row, column and /or sheet in a formula. This impacts the results of copy and paste within a sheet, between sheets and between files / workbooks. This feature can be quite useful but is a bit hard to explain so search the LibreOffice help for "relative addresses" for more information and do some tests to see how it works. [libreoffice-users] i of the most disturbing things about 5.0 libreoffice
Its messed up.. it does not function smoothly and if something is posed one sheet and worked on it for a couple of days and you want to copy part or all of the stuff on sheet 1 to sheet 2 you discover that it its not possible to copy the contents of one sheet to another sheet in the same open Libre office session the new copy in sheet 2 is a reference back to sheet 1.. each cell in sheet 2 has appended to the cell numbers a reference back to the copied from sheet 1. ( instead of =(2+4) nows has (sheet1.a2) + sheet 1.a4 so how do you make the data on each sheet (the copied from and the copied two independent of each other? In earlier versions when you copied data and computations from sheet 1 to sheet 2 the data and computations operated independently of each the copied from sheet. In 5.0 each copy references the data and calculations to the copied from sheet and when you make entries in sheet 2 its very very slow and but if you really want a surprise delete the data from the copied from sheet and the data in the copied to sheet disappears as well. What a mess.. Libre Calc keeps things in sheets.. so on sheet one you do a bunch of calculations and decide to copy that part of your work to the next sheet sheet 2 then you look at the stuff in the cells on sheet two and they are referenced back to the sheet 1. making working on sheet 2 slow, difficult and rendering calc nearly inoperative and virtually useless.. LO 3.5.7.2 does not do that.. and it should not be done that way the sheets should be able to be copied and made independent of each other. Is there some way to do that? I have many years experience with libre office and I am beginning to see it fall apart right in front of my eyeballs. Very disappointing What a shame. I like 3.5.7.2 but this 5 in 64 bits is for the birds.. unless someone can fix it I will go back to the earlier versions. I recommend 5 be redesigned to fit the earlier very successful versions of Calc.. Libre office has been the world´s open source flagship.. until now. -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

Thank you Philip.. I think i need to know the ¨file location¨ of the entry to see if it can be edited out using the command line at a shell interface in Ubuntu or maybe some other editing tool? The dialog box for entering the link details is extremely laborious using a mouse and if after selecting the bookmark you don't click 'apply' and then 'close', sometimes you may find you didn't get the right info entered into the 'target' box. As for deleting bookmarks, that is easy. Just click the bookmarks icon (the star) (or use Insert > bookmarks) and the 'Insert Bookmark' dialog box will show you a list of all bookmarks in the document. Highlight the one you want to delete and click the 'Delete' button. You can also check whether the links are correctly formed by right-clicking on the link, select 'Edit hyperlink' and in the dialogue box, check whether the target info corresponds with where you want to go. hth Philip -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

I Bookmark my index items and my index related content then I hyperlink them both ways example index Item 1 item 2 .. .. Body of the work content 1 content 2 .. .. . So that if I click on content 2 it will return me to item 2 and if I click on item 2 it will take me to content 2. to do this I have been using hyperlinks. so it takes two hyperlinks for each.. works great in all 32 bit writers I know about, but in my ubuntu 16.04 using 5.1.4.2 build 1.5.1.4.-Qubuntu1 it is not smooth.. sometimes the hyperlink works sometimes it does not work. sometimes the hyper link looses the hyperlink text and some it loose s the target book mark. I think the problem is in the bookmark..somehow entries there become corrupted? I have several item 1 type entries there that cannot be deleted or edited out or used by the hyperlink I need these messed up entries out of my bookmarks o be able to make smooth in sequence my work. Also in Writer, using an arrow to move up or down is not always placing the cursor in the correct place on the second line. For example, I type a line and, at the end, press up-arrow; instead of the cursor being at the end of that (shorter) line, it's at a seemingly random location within the text. For another example, if the cursor is in the middle a line and I press up-arrow the cursor is then at the end of the second (longer) line. I haven't been able to discern a pattern. Is this a known issue? I'm not familiar enough with the bug reporting system to find it. Since it can make a difference, I'm working in Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I've always loved the PDF output from LO's PDF converter. For some reason I've never been able to figure out, its PDF output seems sharper and crisper than the PDF output created by other programs, including LaTeX or LyX. It may just be me. I've also been impressed with LO's HTML output. It has a couple different options, either of which which will produce a fairly simple HTML file which can easily be edited further with any text editor. And, where an OpenDocument file is needed, you have it without any need for further conversion. I confess I'm fairly OCD when it comes to my endless search for the perfect document creation tool (which of course doesn't exist). In the FOSS world, I've tried everything from LO to LaTeX, LyX, Markdown, and ReStructuredText, but I almost always come back to LO. I usually try one of the other alternatives when I need to do something LO won't do only to learn later that LO would have done it quite well if I had only taken the time to learn it. Each election the party Oligarchs cull out all but 527 persons, and present them on election ballots, for the sheep in America to select their five each votes from (president(1/1),VP(1 of1), senate(2/100) and house (1 vote of 425). Adds to 527, but you get to vote for only 5 of them. Consider this link: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/08/02/meet-the-billionaires- manipulating-the-u-s-presidential-election.html NONE of these selected for you, salaried elected party puppets have delivered quality of life benefits to Americans. instead they respond to the needs of the Oligarchs. Worse, all have participated in curtailing much of the democracy Americans sought in defeating the British, and they have gone dark and hidden from view, their governing activities. These party puppets have installed hidden 24/7 technology designed to spy on, collect, store, and process our personal, health, and activity data for propaganda and future prosecutorial use? Our behavior is micro managed by computers interacting with our lives and their laws. The 527 puppets of the oligarch controlled political party system have federalized our local school systems and our local banks, monopolized the software and energy businesses, and moved them and the jobs that go with them overseas. The 527 puppets have given our tax monies to failed Wall Street Oligarchs and to foreign nations, http://www.presstv.ir/Detail/2016/08/13/479869/US-aid-Israel-illegal- (see dept of defense gag order WNP-136..) or they have used our taxes to conduct secret foreign wars and when pauses occur they have invented ways to convert our tax money into Oligarch wealth. According to http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/media-con2.JPG 90% of the media is controlled by 6 companies and 232 media executive. Scary? In desperation, many Americans are planning to write-in on the ballot a single candidate to occupy each and every elected office in the USA: hopefully, our write in candidate will win all 527 positions to remove once and for all the party system and their oligarchs from our nation: Sue Grommit, One Wake Up Lane, the Cloud. fudmier, 2015-16 From information mass comes a little knowledge: Education is a bureaucracy, learning is a biological activity, knowledge is bio - processed, available information; but knowledge may be incomplete, conflicting or wrong. exactly how do the keys enter into the software workings in LO . because as I understand it; a key code to function can be created for nearly any desired function? Re: [libreoffice-users] Internal Bookmarks
does this solution.. require that all subsequent entries made to footnotes must follow the field tabbed sequence? if not, how does LO distinguish between a field entry and and a text entry.. Do not write anything manually; use "Fields". > > How can I plant the marker in the original text and then reference it > in the footnote? There exists a lot of predefined markers, and therefore you seldom need to set bookmarks manually. After you have used Insert -> Footnote/Endnote your Cursor is in the footnote area. Now use Insert -> Field -> More Fields... -> tab "Cross references". In your case you need the Type "Headings". In the part "Selection" select the heading for which you will enter a reference. In the part "Insert reference to" you can select what information of the referenced heading will be shown. In your case you need to insert the reference three times, each with a different information. First use "Number" to get "6.4.2", second use "Reference" to get "Sessions Highlights", and third use "Page" to get "47". All will update automatically, if you made changes in the text, for example change the wording of the heading or insert/delete text parts which will affect the number or page. Re: [libreoffice-users] Goodbye to Open Office (maybe?)
Yes, but there is in the open source community a lack of the kind of open source that brought to the world such things as Linux and Libre office..its called need.. need has a market.. if i were running the open source.. i would give some real thought to getting potential users to vote for a product or a product change.. in advance.. the build it they will come does not work well.. instead should me it is needed there we will build it.. For example a few years back if anyone had said I will develop an alternative spreadsheet to compete with the vendors our here, as soon as 100,000 send in $20 each.. That money would have been 100,000 sales.. and each person would be tell developers what it is that got their $20 bucks. Right now if someone were do that with CAD, Libre Cad lacks so much, it is hard to call it competitive, I mean it cannot really compete with the commercial cad ware out there I would bet 500,000 people would any up $20 around the globe. Make a product on a dedicated os, so that the os is never a problem its invisible to the cad and it will reduce commercial cad to about the level of commercial word processors. the market must pay, but there is no need for a vendor to discover a market need, then get a patent, lobby the government and then get to government to make it a monopoly so the vendor can force the market to pay Linux was a project in which everyone that could participated.. because the need for such a product was extremely in need. Pretty much since AOo entered the Apache fold, it has had problems. Some were major, such as no release manager for months. Some were minor, such as an inability to produce documentation. However, the following quotes from https://db.apache.org/newproject.html apply to all Apache Projects, especially podlings: * «Orphaned products. Products which have lost their corporate sponsor (for whatever reason) do not make good candidates. These products will lack a development community and won't have the support needed to succeed under the DB umbrella»; * «Reliance on salaried developers. DB has strong ties to the business community. Many of our developers are encouraged by their employers to work open source projects as part of their regular job. We feel that this is a Good Thing, and corporations should be entitled to contribute to open source, same as anyone else. However, we are wary of products which rely strongly on developers who only work on open source products when they are paid to do so. A product at DB must continue to exist beyond the participation of individual volunteers. We believe the best indicator of success is when developers volunteer their own time to work open source projects.» When AOo went into incubation at AFS, it was an orphaned project, with an over-reliance of paid developers from IBM. When IBM pulled the plug on AOo development, AOo development came to standstill. As such, the long term prognosis of AOo is not good. The LibreOffice developers that split off refused to contribute code under the "Oracle" license and according to the words of Mark Shuttlworth "made their work hell". (Made the work hell of the remaining paid Oracle employees). Since also LibreOffice was allowed to take code from ApacheOffice but not in reverse (due to it restrictive license) (LibreOffice had a license that forbade it from being given back to Apache/Oracle OpenOffice) any updates only flowed in one way and provided the doom for OpenOffice. -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
