Subject: [libreoffice-users] Table of Contents, again

Good evening
I had much trouble with TOCs over last few months.
In a few instances I SOMEHOW managed to get almost what I wanted.

Now, working on a different file, completed the ePub version, try to set
up a TOC.
Heading 1 + Heading 2 properly set, as far as I can tell.
Tools -> Heading numbering set properly (I hope).

Still, inserting a TOC that is supposed to show Heading 1 + 2 includes
EVERY paragraph of the entire document.
Working for hour to set this straight, I still "do not get it".

Could someone please point me to the thing that needs fixed.
Thank you
Thomas

Re: [libreoffice-users] Strange style application behavior.

2024-05-17 Thread Chris J.

Hi.

Hi Chris,

without an example it is nearly impossible to reproduce and help here.

You know there are character styles also? If you have set a character
style, which defines the font to 12 pt, you could also set the
paragraph style with a font of 18 pt. The font will appear with the
special defined character style (and 12 pt).

Regards

Robert

Yes but I've never used one, deliberately anyway. In theory all the
chapter files were all build form the same template, so I'm at a loss on
this one. I will add a character style to my template.

Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] Strange style application behavior.

2024-05-15 Thread Chris J.

Hi.

This is just an observation at the moment. It was easily fix. I wouldn't
bother mentioning it except that it happened twice in two different files.

Ubuntu 23.10

LibreOffice 7.6.6.3

I've set up three styles for story writing; paragraph indented, chapter,
and scene break. They've all been working just fine, until today.

I was in a story from before I made these styles and was removing direct
formatting and applying my stiles, I'd done everything else to this
chapter and was back at the top applying the chapter stile. I clicked on
the chapter name, went to the stiles side bar, and double clicked on the
style I wanted, my chapter heading. The space above and below the
chapter number was right as were the bold number and centering. But the
font size, which should have been 18pt was 12pt. I checked the format
bar and it said 12pt. I edited the stile and check the font size and it
was 18pt. I tried clicking the stile twice more but nothing changed. I
change the size to 18pt manually.

The next two chapters were fine. When I put the cursor in the chapter
number an double clicked the style it did the expected. The next file
had same problem described above. All the other files went as expected.
This only happened twice, so far.

I'm putting this out there to see if anyone has run into this.

[libreoffice-users] Table Of Contents

2024-05-09 Thread Chris J.

Hi,

I'm in the manual (Yes, I've read it) at "Creating a Table of Contents".
Based on the first paragraph it looks like the default is to key off a
heading. Makes sense. I did create my own heading style based on Heading
1. This is what I'm using for chapter numbering. I made a few changes,
font is TNR, there's space above and below the chapter number so the
first line of text is half way down the page, the chapter number is
centered. Each chapter is its own file. The whole has to be combined
into a Master document.

When I put the cursor wherever I want the ToC in the Master document and
insert it there, the only thing I get is the text "Table Of Contents".

No chapter numbers, no page numbers, no nothing, just Table Of Contents.
Clearly I'm doing some wrong here. No idea what.

HELP. Thank you.

Hi,

Ubuntu linux 23.10

LibreOffice 7.6.5.2

Before I had figured out what styles could do in Writer, I made the
newbie mistake of hand formatting everything. You can see where this is
going. I only needed a massively huge three styles to do everything I
needed. Most story submissions are pretty much the same format
requirements. If I even need another I just make new style. Very handy.

In both cases I have the same problem, although the first is a tad more
complicated as there are tabs to be removed. I have three styles. For
stories that's all you need; chapter heading, paragraph, and scene
change. At least that's all I've ever needed.

So, question; is there a way to automate the application of the styles
and remove the tabs at the beginning of paragraphs. Normal find and
replaces doesn't cut it. Otherwise I'm forced to go through several
books by hand.

Thank you.

The detail is interesting, and also helps to understand the context. I'm more
familiar with page styles than with sections, but a quick search suggests that
sections will do what you need. If your changes in the number of columns always
occur at page breaks, page styles might be more elegant, but whatever works for
you ... :-) Good luck with getting your father's poems printed the way you want
them.

page

I wanted to avoid defining page styles since this requires, I assume, switching
back and forth between styles on some pages and is more sophistication than I
want to get into. Also it would require me to thoroughly understand styles.

My father, or maybe my stepmother, had typed in his collection of poems years
ago on a semi-fancy paper and assembled them into a “book” held together by a
cerlox binding. He gave copies to his sons and daughter and possible to one or
two other family members or family friends. I’m trying to retain the
appearance of his pages in my digital copy. Unfortunately, my father died in
2018 so asking him about any of this is impossible.

I had planned to type and enter his poems into a text document of some kind
years ago but entering it all by hand was onerous since I’m not a touch typist
and I stopped this endeavour.

But more recently I have discovered that OCR (optical character recognition)
has improved vastly since the last time I tried it. I discovered, while doing
something else, that I could photo the pages of his book with my cell phone,
then use Google Lens to select and copy just the text from these pages. I
mailed the text to myself. Then saved the text into page files (rtf (rich text
format) files) and the text was preserved and there was almost never any
extraneous characters.

Because this capture process lost the line structure of the poems, I had to
edit every page file and re-establish the poem line structure. That’s all done
(including correcting some minor spelling and grammatical mistakes in the
process) and I am now trying to assemble the poems into a single Word document
using LibreOffice.

My ultimate plan is to use this file to print copies of his poems into
hardcover book copies. One of my brothers has lost or misplaced his copy of
the cerlox book already. I know there are relatively inexpensive places to get
a small number of books like this printed so I will distribute his poems to
family members and possibly friends as a more durable medium for his poetry.

Sorry for the detail but just thought you might be interested.
Another person was very helpful and suggested using sections for the 2 and 3
column pages. So, I’m going to try that approach since it sounds excellent.

I had 3 ideas actually based on what I saw in the LibreOffice Writer manual.
I wondered if Frames, or Sections, or Tables were the best approach since it
looked like any of these might work.
Having 3 tables side by side on the same page might work but I think text for
that page would have to be manually inserted into the tables and it wouldn’t
flow automatically from the first to the second and to the third table.

I wasn’t clear on the application of frames or sections to do this which is why
I thought I’d ask the support email.
another person wrote me and basically suggested a section as the best solution.

But your suggestion was much appreciated.

Thanks,
Keith

2024-03-19 Thread W. Robert J. Funnell, Prof.
Keith -

Have you considered defining 2-column and 3-column page styles? Press F11 to
see the Styles dialogue; click on the icon for Page Styles; right-click on
'Default Page Style'; and click on 'New'. There's a tab for Columns. When you
want to switch page styles, you can do Insert > More Breaks > Manual Break.
Then select 'Page break' and the desired style for the next page.

[libreoffice-users] Saving an odm as a docx in editable form.

2024-03-02 Thread Chris J.

Hi.

LO 7.6.4.1

Ubuntu linux 23.04 with updates.

I have an odm master compiled from chapter files. I want to save it as a
docx in editable form. There was a way to do this. It was a little
kludgy, You had had to go through an odt intermediary file. But it worked.

In 7.6.4.1 this no longer seems to work. Some place there is a write
only/write protect attribute. Does anybody know where this is in
7.6.4.1? Yes, I've RTFMed. I've run into several places where the
documentation does not match or is not as clear as it might be for
7.6.4.1. Most editors/publisher want docx. They need to make comments
and edit the text. This can't be done in read only mode. I need to turn
that off. Yes, Edit->edit is checked.

Thank you.

Re: [libreoffice-users] A curiosity.

2024-01-27 Thread W. Robert J. Funnell, Prof.
Chris -

Writer recognizes a paragraph by the fact that you pressed the Enter key. If
you select Formatting Marks in the View menu, you'll see paragraph symbols (¶)
where Writer thinks there are paragraph breaks. Whether the first line is
indented or not should be controlled by the paragraph style that you're using,
not by explicitly using the tab character.

(One way of editing the current paragraph style is to right-click somewhere
inside a paragraph and then, in the menu that pops up, select Paragraph and
then Edit Style, and look under Indents & Spacing. It's recommended to use the
Text Body style for most of your paragraphs, not the Default Paragraph Style.)

Hi.

This isn't so much a problem as a curiosity.

Running Libre Office 7.6.4.1 on Ubuntu linux 23.10.

In Writer, very simple format that matches most submission requirements,
nothing fancy. New paragraphs get indented with a tab. Very often, not
quite always, There's a little green squiggle under the first character,
double quotes for dialogue, or a word, narration. That little green
squiggle means Writer has a question or suggestion about something. If I
left click on it, very often it tells me I should delete the white space
in front of it.

I'm confused. Does Writer know from paragraphs or not? Is there
something I should be doing to signify a new paragraph other than tab?

Re: [libreoffice-users] disappearing impress.

2024-01-12 Thread Chris J.

Hi.

LO 7.3.7.2
Linux 6.1 environment
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS
Release: 22.04
Codename: jammy

I am experiencing something I remember having before, but I forget how to
deal with it.

Somehow, when I try to open an impress file, it is nowhere to be found.
The Icon in the system tray shows an impress file is open, but it is
nowhere on the screen.

spreadsheet and writer files open normally, it only affects impress.

Not sure if this is what you're seeing. I've occasionally run across a
similar problem in Writer. I open the file but apparently nothing shows
up on the screen.

However, in my case, what seems to be going on is that the normal window
size I use to open documents has defaulted to something ridiculously
tiny. I've either found them accidentally or but systematically
minimizing each and every other window I have open until the only thing
left is this tiny little upper left hand corner of a window which is
usually up near the top of the screen. It's is there but gets lost in
all my other windows. On finding it I can very carefully grab the lower
right hand corner and drag to expand it fully. Saving it at that point
solves them problem...until the next times it happens.

I admit that those instructions are confusing. Can you use the menus to go to
Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > General? There, under Settings, you
should see 'Measurement unit' and then 'Tab stops'. In that field, my
LibreOffice says 1.25 cm, meaning that I have tab stops set every 1.25 cm

This was the default setting. It seems to be what you want, and I don't know

you're describing sounds like the behaviour of the Tab key (on the upper left
side of my keyboard, with arrows on it). It sounds as though your tab settings

I type in text, the press the space bar and instead of the cursor going 2-5

In WordPerfect, I could set the Indents so that if I type text and then press
the spacebar the cursor would move 2-4 spaces to the right and then I could
press the space bar and the cursor would travel 3-4 spaces, etc etc.

How does one "set that up" in Writer?

I'm afraid that I don't understand what you mean.

For one thing, 'indent' refers to having the beginnings and/or the ends of
lines spaced in from the margins, which doesn't seem to be what you mean.

If you're referring to wide white spaces between words in a line, the only time
that happens with single space characters (that I can think of) is if (1)
you're using full text justification (both the left and right sides of the text
in a paragraph are aligned); and (2) you have a long string of unbroken text
(e.g., a very long word or a URL) that must be wrapped onto the next line. That
leaves a relatively small amount of text that needs to be stretched to fill the
distance from margin to margin, resulting in wide spaces between words. That is
more likely to happen if your text column is narrow.

Am I close to understanding what you mean?

In Libre, is there a way to ensure that indents on each line go across the

If not and you must use a Style, which Style have you found which gives you
incremental indeed in each line?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Libre Writer - Indents

2023-12-26 Thread W. Robert J. Funnell, Prof.
Charles -

Hi All,

Hope you're all enjoying good holiday cheer.

In Libre, is there a way to ensure that indents on each line go across the
page incrementally and not huge indeed each time you press the Space Bar?

If not and you must use a Style, which Style have you found which gives you
incremental indeed in each line?

Thank you,

Charles.

Re: [libreoffice-users] common to all pages header

2023-12-22 Thread Chris J.

Hi.

It's not the paragraph style but the page style you need to look at.
Typically a document has several page styles of which 'First page'
could be one - and that wouldn't propagate through to the other page
styles. The bulk of the document probably uses something like 'Default
page style' and that's the one where you need to insert your header
material.

Ah. It has become clear that my knowledge of ch. 8, 9, 10, & 11 in the

this deplorable state of affairs. While I have RTFMed, I have obviously

[libreoffice-users] LO Writer master document defaults.

2023-11-17 Thread Chris J.

Hi,

Ubuntu linux 23.10 and earlier, LO 7.6.2.1and earlier.

I've made a master document. The end result is a DOCX. I get this by
creating an ODT and then saving that as a the DOCX. So far so good.

However, the Master Document is read-only. This property propagates  to
the ODT and the DOCX. I discovered this when my editor reported he
couldn't add, delete, or modify text, he couldn't add comments, there
was something else too but I don't remember just now. The point I'm
making here is the DOCX was useless for the editorial process.

Is there a way to turn off/deactivate globally the read-only properties,
all of them, so that the ODT and DOCX don't inherit them? Is there even
a list of what all the read-only properties are?

Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] How did y DOCX become read only?

2023-10-31 Thread Chris J.

Hi.

Running LO 7.5.7.1 on  Ubuntu 23.04.

The goal here is to submit a DOCX to my editor who will do corrections
etc to the document and put in margin comments. Said DOCX has to be
read/write to do this. I've been assembling the DOCX by hand chapter by
chapter, which is a pain in the butt. Enter the ODM.

It makes sense to me that the ODM would b read-only. It's really just a
collection of links. To get the the DOCX I did the following Save as...
and exports, ODM -> ODT -> DOCX.

The Read-Only attribute of the ODM has propagated through to the DOCX.
Is there any way to remove this and make the DOCX read/write? I've tried
a number of things, no joy.  TY.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Save and Edit Text document

2023-10-29 Thread W. Robert J. Funnell, Prof.
If you already have a scanned image, you can convert it to text using OCR
software like Tesseract-OCR, which has already been mentioned. It is free and
open-source, and is available for Linux, MS Windows and Mac. gImageReader
(https://github.com/manisandro/gImageReader) is a nice GUI for Tesseract.
I would expect a scanner to give a better quality image, and thus better OCR,
than a phone camera.

If you have a paper document you want to turn into text, and your scanner
doesn't give you text output as an option... you can download Google Lens
and point your phone at the document and copy each page that way.

But the copied text is in your phone, so you'll have to email it to a
desktop or use another editor like google docs or calibra office to paste
into, then open that with libreoffice. But saving files as PDF isn't
good. PDF is a final output, used to make it hard for other people to edit
the file. That's the whole point of PDF, and why it's used so commonly for
finished work. use ODT format for libreoffice... you'll save yourself a lot
of headache. but when you send it, you do need to output it to another
form, PDF is best, but you can use .doc or .docx . but MS formats aren't
intended to be the working format for libreoffice, but a way to exchange
information to non-informed users.

Mistake 2) Once you get a document created with the formatting and
styles that you want, but still blank, before adding the actual text,
save it as a template. Next time you want to create a new document do
'New > From templates' instead of just 'New.'

Most publishers offer a list of formatting requirements for manuscript
submissions, and many provide templates for major word processors, plus
LO also has numerous templates for manuscripts. There are also various
style manuals on the market. Why invent the wheel when someone has
already done it? Just open a new document based on the required
template, and there you are, ready to go to work.

[libreoffice-users] Styles

2023-10-22 Thread Chris J.

Hi.

A few details might change, but stories submissions to publishers and
editors have pretty much the same characteristics, in the States anyway;
1.00 inch margin top and bottom, 1.25 inch margins right and left, Times
Roman or Times New Roman font, 12pt, double spaced. Page numbers are
helpful and I put mine right justified in the header and centered in the
footer. Most want the title in the header right side. Some want the
chapter title in the header, left side. Some want a table of contents
which I read can be done in Write in the header I believe.

The first page of a chapter is a little different. There's some white
space at he top (I put 6 double spaced lines), then an a chapter number
or title, more white space (same), then a page by age repeat of the
above first paragraph.

One would think this should be possible with a couple of styles.

I can change an existing paragraph style with no problem. But setting up
a new one with the above attributes and getting it defined for entire
page/story is eluding me for some reason. It's driving me nuts to the
point that keep a couple blank formatted pages around as above and just
copy them to new stories.

Is there a list of common mistakes I can look at to try figuring out I'm
dong wrong?

[libreoffice-users] assembling an OTM into an EPUB.

2023-10-16 Thread Chris J.

Hi, all.

Subject says it. OTM -> EPUB so I can get it on a Kindle. Kindles can
handle PDF. However I'm told PDF is more graphics in nature and doesn't
necessarily work well with every Kindle as far as easy readability.

LO Writer Export claims to be able to do this. I get an error when I
try. Examination of this error indicates I need  5 or 6 other pieces to
pull this trick off and I can't find them all.

Enter Calibre which can translate a bunch of formats into another bunch
of formats.

Calibre dumps all my formatting it seems, no paragraph indents, no
margins, no centering.

I can assemble an OTM into an ODT and go from there to a DOCX for
submission. But I need to get it into an EPUB as well.

Any construction thoughts will be gratefully appreciated.

[libreoffice-users] Assembling a Master Document.

Hi.

Thank you for your replies. Much appreciated. The fog my be beginning to

I'm trying to create a Master Document. I did this once before. I'm
beginning to think it only worked because I was having really a good
day. I'm following the directions at

https://help.libreoffice.org/latest/ar/text/swriter/guide/globaldoc_howtos.html

This may be contributing to the problem.

Step 2: Where is this Text supposed to go, in the Navigator box or the
document?

Step 3 adding a file: I'm assuming this refers to the Navigator Insert
left pointing arrow. I click and hold, nothing happens. If I click on
the arrow's associated drop down next to it a four line menu drops but
all entries are dimmed out. Trying the line that says file of course
does nothing.

What am I doing wrong?

[libreoffice-users] after the fact page numbers

2023-09-25 Thread Chris J.

Hi.

Whole book, each chapter is a file. No page numbers. My bad.

Without going through each and every page, is there a way to propagate
headers and footers on every page with the requisite page numbers and
whatever else throughout a chapter. I realize I will likely need to do
this one chapter at a time.

I suspect this has something to do with a style sheet. I'm unclear how
to propagate throughout the document after the fact of the document's
creation, i.e. I've already written the book.

Also, If I manage this miracle. will the chapter numbers be properly re
sequenced if I concatenate all the chapters. That would really be nice.
I'll be doing that manually in LO Writer using cut-n-paste unless
there's a better more automated way.

Thank you.

A thought in passing - it would seem the OP's issue is that the UI has
changed, but he had no (ready) way of knowing in what way. In this case
a context menu item has been moved to the depths of a dialogue box.

Might it be a good idea, when this is done, to leave the original menu
entry in place, but have it just show an information box saying where
the item can be found and maybe give a pointer to [a web page with] some
hints on the matter? And leave that in place for several releases.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Writer- table of contents hyperlink problem

I just checked using LO 7.3 under Windows 10 with a document created 2 or 3
months ago, and the TOC links work fine, taking me to the appropriate section.
I checked with the same document using LO 6.1 under Debian Linux 10 and the
links worked properly there also.

I assume that you're asking whether Impress can save to .docx? I think the
answer must be 'no'. In any case, .docx files are no more open-source than
.pptx files are. Impress can save to either .ods format, which is really
open-source, or to PDF.

Can PowerPoint save to something like docx?
I think that is a more opensource file format.

When you double-click, the character is inserted immediately and you stay in

Hi,

I have just taken an upgrde (with Linux Mint) from LO 5.something to
7.3.7.2. Lots of good things, but I'm really upset about the way
Insert Special Characters has changed. I used to be able to enter
a long string (one or more words) in Hebrew or Greek characters,
with them being compiled in a box below the character set, then hit
'insert' to put the whole thing into my document. Now, it seems as
though I have to do it one character at a time, which is much more
time-consuming. If there any way to get the old behaviour?

If I understand correctly, I think that all you need to do is click at one end

How do I cut a block of text between two bookmarks without dragging the

[libreoffice-users] Need help with LOBase

2023-02-19 Thread Pertti T . J . Rönnberg

Hi, LOBase experts
I have been working on a LOBase database where the fields of interest are
(a) the husband (=table ”t_man”) and his ”surname” and ”firstname”
(b) the wife (= table ”t_wife”) and her ”firstname” (husband and wife
have same surname).

I want the Report Builder to produce a list with the husbands surname is
in one column and the both first names are concated in another (e.g.
”Bond”, ”Harry & Linda”).
I have managed to in the query write a function that works OK as long as
the husband has a wife, but In case there is only a Harry -- no wife
Linda -- then the concate result is ”null”.

The question is how to build a concate function that covers both these
Report outprints:

”Bond, Harry” and ”Bond, Harry & Linda”.

My PC is a Win11 Pro; LO-version 7.4.5.1; HSQLDB

Grateful for any help

[libreoffice-users] Questions about LOBase

2023-01-19 Thread Pertti T . J . Rönnberg

Good afternoon LOBase experts,
and all the best for this new year!

Since years back I now again need to create a database preferable one
that can extract and print reports.
I noticed that LO has skipped ’Firebird’ and offers ’HSQLDB’ as a main
option.

_Questions:
_(a)     Is LOBase up-to-date and seriously still usable or shall I look
for another program

(b)     is JRE still needed (is it needed for the reports?)
-- if so what is the exact name of the JRE-version to be downloaded &
installed

-- are there anything special to know when installing JRE
(c) any advice regarding installing & using the ’modern’ LOBase?

Thanks for any help

Re: [libreoffice-users] double-spacing within an outline

2022-12-16 Thread W. Robert J. Funnell, Prof.
When editing a paragraph style, in the 'Organizer' tab you can specify 'Next
style'. Is that set to be your custom 'block outline' style? I don't really
understand why two Enters would kick you out if one doesn't.

A style purist would say that you should define a separate style with greater
spacing, rather than using blank paragraphs.

Subject: [libreoffice-users] double-spacing within an outline

I have a custom outline style that I call 'block outline' because it
doesn't use bullets or alphanumerics to head the different levels.

It's set to single space. But there are times I want to double
space--e.g., to make a greater break between "paragraphs" at a given
outline level. But when I hit enter/return twice I get kicked out of my
custom outline style.

Is this a "feature" of LO Writer outlining or is there some setting that
will keep me in the current outline style when I add an extra line
spacing? (The only thing that works now is to single space, add some new
text, and then go to the start of that "paragraph" and hit enter/return
again.)

Using Ubuntu 20.04 and LO 7.3.6.2 on Dell XPS.

Re: [libreoffice-users] hyphenation

2022-12-15 Thread W. Robert J. Funnell, Prof.
My assumption is that Chris is looking for help on when to hyphenate compound
adjectives (like 'the red-brown dog' but 'the big brown dog'), similar to how
LO has rules about when to hyphenate words at the ends of lines. Hyphenation of
compound adjectives involves a lot of judgment and personal taste. As far as I
know, there's nothing about it in LO.

Chris,

I'm not sure exactly what the problem is. I hyphenate things all the time with
no problems.

If Regina's suggestion is what you need, you can also insert the non-breaking
hyphen with Ctrl-Shift-Hyphen (much faster for me, anyway, then having to move
my hand to the mouse).

[libreoffice-users] hyphenation

2022-12-15 Thread Chris J.

Hi.

I likely know the answer to this. I'm looking for verification or a
better answer.

The only hyphenation ability in LO Write I'm seeing is for word
splitting and end of a line.

What I'd really like is help with compound adjectives. Does anything
like that exist in LO Writer?

Re: [libreoffice-users] LO Calc, limits(?)

2022-09-02 Thread Chris J.

Hi.

As Johnny says, we probably need more information to help. #VALUE
normally means that the number is too big to fit in the space it is
allowed. You should be able to see the value by selecting the cell and
looking at the contents in the display above the top of the sheet. Or
make the cell bigger, or reduce the font size :)

The formula was fine. But I'm guessing the text wasn't. I retyped and it
worked. Might have been an unprintable character or a misplaced bit.
I've run into this before with various versions of cut 'n paste but none
that I've solved in this context.

[libreoffice-users] LO Calc, limits(?)

2022-09-02 Thread Chris J.

Hi.

Is there some practical limit to the number of rows specifically, but
columns too, that an LO Calc spreadsheet can have?

I've run into this before with my checkbook. The spreadsheet is arranged
such that down is back in time, the current amount is at the top.
There's a formula in one column that calculates the current amount in
the account. This is where the problem happens. I added some deposits
this morning and in the new rows at the top in the column which should
calculate the amount in the account I get the literal #VALUE.

The column with the formula worked perfectly up to this point. The sheet
has 2540 rows. I get there error gong from 2536 to 2537.

Thanks.

[libreoffice-users] Bounced messages -- what's that?

2022-08-22 Thread Pertti T . J . Rönnberg

Best LibreOffice gurus,

Approx twice a month since January I've got that mail (on this address
only; never before):

/from: users+ow...@global.libreoffice.org/

/"Hi, this is the Mlmmj program managing the mailing list. Some messages to you could not be delivered. If you're
seeing this message it means things are back to normal, and it's merely
for your information. Here is the list of the bounced messages: - 57967".///

I am not aware of any missing messages and obviously "things are back to
normal".
My PC (Win10pro, 16GB, AMD Ryzen 7, SSD) seems to work as expected.

I normally delete this message directly but decided now to ask.
Any ideas what this is about - and where can I see "message 57967"?

Thanks in advance

[libreoffice-users] output formats.

2022-06-27 Thread Chris J.

Hi,

First thank you for answers to previous questions. Took some fiddling
but it all worked. Phil, that trick with the page numbers was neat.

New problem. The Master Document works great for assembling. But
publishers and editors want DOCX files. The virtual document you get
from the Master Document method can only be saved or exported as ODMs,
txt, PDF or EPUB. Writer complained when I tried EPUB. PDF work but when
I tied to covert with Calibre Library everything past the first page
lost all formatting. Sometimes something in one document file format
won't translate into another. But the document format needed here is
pretty simple and straight forward. I don't know what's going on.

Is there a way to get this assembled thing back into DOCX?

[libreoffice-users] Styles etc.

2022-06-26 Thread Chris J.

HI.

Thank you, I'm beginning to figure out Master Documents. Still a few
issues but we'll get to them or solve them no doubt with the least
convenient method.

Book editors and publishers have submission formats they will accept.
They want a certain type face, size, margins and top and bottom space.
The idea use to be to get words count or ranges of same etc. This was
before word processors. They still want it that way.

I RTFMed and created a page style. There's no option to save page
styles, the closest is OK. But, when I looked at the list I got from the
bottom middle page stye menu there it was.

When I exited Writer and got back in however, my page styles was gone.
Is there no way to save these things or must delve into the mysteries of
the Template? Thank you.

You've missed the one Unicode point that does exactly what you require, but its
use will depend on the font in use.

U+2011 NON-BREAKING HYPHEN

You can enter via LibreOffice Special Character dialog, or LibreOffice's
Unicode toggle. That is you can type U+2011 and then +X to toggle the
glyph.

If the font in use does not "cover" the codepoint, you'll get a fallback
replacement or possibly the no glyph value for the font.

When added to canvas the non-breaking hyphen character will receive NPC
highlighting.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [libreoffice-users] Non-breaking dash/hyphen

  **EXTERNAL EMAIL**
This email originated outside of The University of Texas at San Antonio.
Please exercise caution when clicking on links or opening attachments.

I had always thought that the difference between a "dash" and a "hyphen" is
that the dash is a character (that is, will not break a character string),
while the hyphen hyphenates (that is, breaks at the end of a line if the
character string following the hyphen is too long to fit on the line). So,
needing a non-breaking substitute for that horizontal bar on my keyboard, I
invoked:
Insert > Special Character
to get (what I would call) a dash.

LibreOffice has such mid-height horizontal-bar characters in three character
groups:
"General punctuation", characters:
U+2010 (HYPHEN)
U+2012 (FIGURE DASH)
U_2013 (EN DASH)
U+2014 (EM DASH)
U+2015 (HORIZONTAL BAR)
"Mathematical Operators", character:
U+2212 (MINUS SIGN)
"Box Drawing", character:
U+2500 (BOX DRAWINGS LIGHT HORIZONTAL)

The five characters of the "General Punctuation" group mostly seem to just
represent different widths of hyphen (despite three being called FIGURE DASH,
EN DASH, EM DASH), in that in a character string each will end a line of
characters if the string following is too long to fit. Only the HORIZONTAL BAR
acts as a common character, such that the string of which it is a member will
not break there; but it is very long to be used as a non-breaking hyphen.

The MINUS SIGN in the "Mathematical Operators" group has a special operation:
It will break at the end of a line, but will itself move to the next line, to
stay with the character following MINUS SIGN.

The BOX DRAWINGS LIGHT HORIZONTAL character acts like the HORIZONTAL BAR --
that is, as a true, non-breaking character -- but is also too long to be used
generally as a non-breaking hyphen.

Is there a clean way to make a non-breaking dash/hyphen?

One possibility is to replace all characters by something else. For
example, in Find & Replace, turn on 'Regular expressions' (under
'Other options') and replace '[a-z]' by 'x'.

When you say 'the page breaks are off', do you mean that the page
breaks occur in different places? Are they off by only a little? Maybe
it's because the document uses a font that your system doesn't have so
the font is being replaced by a font with slightly different font
metrics?

I believe that sometimes the formatting won't be quite the same even
between different versions of Word, much less between Word and another
word processor.

Right-click on the frame and select 'Position and Size' from the

(This is based on an old posting that I found by searching:

I have never seen the behaviour you describe, with oversize characters

What version of LibreOffice are you using, and under what version of

Are you looking at something other than:

* The United Colors of Liberty: 20 colours --- shades and hues of green,

Both of those were extensively discussed back in 2010/2011.

That seems like something that should be corrected. What other actions

In the meantime, would it work to define a macro that does

[libreoffice-users] Remove redline markings and strikeout text

2018-01-06 Thread Eddie J
The title refers to a WordPerfect function that has existed since, I
believe, the DOS days. I could apply the "redline" font attribute on
text I added to an article, then apply the "strikeout" attribute on text
I didn't want in the article. After that, I could save the article,
save a copy under a new filename, and then run the aptly-named function
on one of the copies to generate a clean copy with my edits.

Does a similar function exist in Writer? It doesn't have to be those
two attributes, but anything that would highlight the "should I stay?"
and "should I go?" parts of the article and then easily generate a
clean copy would be very helpful.

Extra adulation if the markup attributes can be saved to .docx,
which my main publisher uses exclusively.

Thanks!

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Page formatting in writer goes nuts

2016-09-09 Thread Denis J. Navas

I adjust the following option.

Menu: Tools -- Options -- LibreOffice Writer -- Automatic caption --
untick "LibreOffice Writer image"

After that, when I copy an image it get a character anchor, but if I
insert an image from a file on disk it gets a paragraph anchor.

Can you clarify how you do "not instruct LO to add a frame" to get it
anchored as character?

If one adds an image in an out of the box new document (insert >

wrap" is a logical step, but that is not what you mean, right?

[libreoffice-users] Looking for LibreOffice version 4.3 for the Mac

2015-06-28 Thread M J Clark
Hi! I have some old Appleworks documents running on a Mac OS 10.6.8 - I
would like to convert these docs to a format that I will be able to use going
forward and read that I could use LibreOffice 4.3. (for the Mac)

When I go to the download LibreOffice website I cannot find this version - I
can find a Mac version for higher # operating systems than 10.6.8.

Where can I download a trusted copy of LibreOffice 4.3?

coding. I have a spreadsheet that contains a date stamp along with some

coded calendar (quick reference yearly calendar that I can print on a
single page). I found what seems to be a nice calendar template, but I
don't know how to connect the two. Suggestions and solutions are
appreciated!

[libreoffice-users] Making horizontal lines in Writer

2014-09-23 Thread J. Van Brimmer
I'm using 4.3.1.2 on Xubuntu Linux.

I am creating some lesson handouts for a class I'm going to be teaching. I
have to email them to our secretary, who has to read them in MS Office for
printing.

The documents are formatted in landscape mode.

In the document I enter a short text line, press Enter, then I type in
three dashes, press Enter, and waula, I have a horizontal line for the
students to write their answers on.
Sometimes I continue pressing Enter to automatically create as many lines
as I need.

This works fine as ling as I stay in .odt format. But if I save the
document in .doc format, and then open the .doc file in LibreOffice, some
of the horizontal lines are missing. I have tried everything I can think
of, but I can't get all of the lines to stick from .odt to .doc format.

I have read the Help page here:
https://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Drawing_Lines_in_Text
 .
But those tips don't work either.

I am being forced to work in Winbroke using BS Word. Help!

 Hi :)

here is that it makes uncompressed Pdfs fairly easily, or at least with

Yes, I created a test pdf from one of my lessons and sent that to her, and
she said that the lines came out as I had described over the phone. So I
think that's the route I'm going to use. I have no idea what she's reading
the pdf with, but probably Adobe Reader.

You'll still probably need to use boring and over-used fonts such as Times
New Roman, Arial or for that wacky, friendly look the infamous Comic Sans
to fit in with whatever he/she is likely to have on his/her machine.
Students love dull boring old stuff don't they?

There is another neat trick if you are going to give him/her the files on
a usb-stick and be able to click a couple of things yourself. The Portable
 Apps initiative
 http://portableapps.com/apps/office/libreoffice_portable/
It makes the programs/apps available without having to install them onto
the Windows machine. Then when you unplug the usb-stick the program
 becomes unavailable again.

That is definately a possibility. I used to use the PortableApps a lot
when I was MS bound at work. Now I have more liberality to use Linux, so I
have to learn how to interface with the MS world from the outside.

It might be worth testing this before relying on it. I'd want the Pdf on
the same Usb-stick and easy to quickly email in case her machine is tooo
 locked down.

I'm not sure how to help with the fonts but maybe it's something to think
 about next time.

Why does she/he have to read them in MS Office anyway? I'd bet she
doesn't use MS Office to read Pdfs. At some point people decided it was ok
to have 2 pieces of software to read documents. Why not a third? It is
possible for her to have both MS Office for her own use and LibreOffice to
handle documents from people who don't want to pay exorbitant fees for
malware infested vendor lock-ins. Do all the students also 'have to' buy
into MS Office because the staff are given it for free?

Is it morally right for teachers to force their students to buy into
something in order to help ensure the staff get it for free? (Sorry, just
trying to give you arguments but they are unlikely to win you any fans!)
 Good luck and regards from
 Tom :)

Thanks.

I finally figured it out. Left click Inside the text box in a slide.
Then right click in the text box and select Bullets and Numbering.
Click on the Customise tab. For Number select None, and for
Level select 1 - 10. Click on OK. Now auto-bulleting is off for the
rest of the slides that are duplicated from that one. Only thing is,
that'll probably have to be repeated for each new Imress document. Oh
well.

o If you press Shift+Enter instead of Enter, you should get a new list item
without a bullet, although still with the same indent.

o To remove bullets and indents, select the material and click the Bullets

for use slide Master Pages After adding my text on the slide, I pressed
F5 to view the slide full screen. (I still have an old 1280x1024 monitor.)
At full screen, the colored background that was part of the Master Slide
only filled part of the background. How do I make it fill the whole
background?

I am using LOO Version: 4.1.3.2

It depends on how this master page has technically been created. There
exist two often used ways: Put the graphic into the page background
property, or put an image on the master slide. Therefore, please tell us,
which of the Available for use designs do you have used.

I have noticed that somewhere along the update path, the borders around
charts inserted into Calc have disappeared. I'm now using LO 4.2.3.3 on

Sorry, Willian, I know this doesn't answer your question, it's just that I

[libreoffice-users] Footnotes in LibreOffice 3.5.4.2

2014-03-10 Thread J. Van Brimmer
I'm using LibreOffice 3.5.4.2 on Debian Linux. After I create a
footnote on a page, say page 1, and create a footnote, let's say
Footnote # 1, how can I create a second footnote to reference the same
footnote #1? All I want for the second footnote is a superscript
numeral 1 in the body of the text. But, if I use Insert
Footnote/Endnote ..., all I see is Footnote, with the options of
Automatic, or Character. If I use Automatic I get the next number,
i.e. 2. If I use Character, and enter the number 1, which is what I
want, it creates a second footnote numbered 1. That's not what I want,
I just want two references in the body of the text pointing to the
same footnote numbered number 1.

Does that make sense? Any ideas?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Footnotes in LibreOffice 3.5.4.2

2014-03-10 Thread J. Van Brimmer
Okay, I got that. But it doesn't enter the number a superscript, it
enters it the same size as the text. I have to highlight the number,
right click on it, then select Style Superscript.

This is a little better, but still tedious.

 o Go to Insert | Cross-reference... | Cross-references.
 o Under Type, select Footnotes.
o Under Selection, select your existing footnote.
 o Click Insert.

 I trust this helps.

I have seen a problem that seems to be similar, but that was an earlier

for me and I couldn't repair it with LibreOffice, so I installed Apache
OpenOffice and opened it. Apache OpenOffice repaired the file for me and I
have been using it ever since, and since then the spreadsheet never got
 corrupted again.

That's probably not the solution you are looking for, I just wanted to say
that you are probably not the only one who had this problem, but I'm not
100% sure it's the same bug.

 Hi :)
I found that some files went a bit weird if they had originally been
created in Word as DocX (maybe as (Doc too but i haven't had enough

 Odt.

Similarly with some files created in 3.3.x and used in more recent
versions - and again with ones in 3.4.x. Ones in 3.5.x and onwards
don't seem to have the same problems at all. However, a lot of that
could be due to user-error. I had been using OpenOffice a little bit
over the years under Sun but only started using it seriously when it
became LibreOffice. During most of the 3.3.x and 3.4.x branch i had a
tendency to set the file defaults as MS ones instead of using ODF. It
was only by the 3.5.x branch that i committed to using ODF for
originals and since then i've had no problems.

Starting afresh solved the problems for me. I'd start by opening a
blank fresh new document using the latest release of LibreOffice.
Then copypaste(special) in as unformatted text. Finally apply styles
 and drag in images.

Granted, it is a LOT easier with most word-processed letters and other
fairly small documents. Spreadsheets are going to be a tad more
complicated because there's a tendency to have a lot of worksheets and
each sheet would need to be done separately.

On the other hand it might be easier to do using just remove direct
formatting without starting afresh in a fresh new document. Then it
might be just a couple of clicks per sheet.
 Ctrl A = Select All
 Ctrl c = copy
Ctrl Shift v = paste special
Ctrl m = remove direct formatting (it's the top item in the
 Format menu)

 Regards from
 Tom :)

Thanks for the tip Tom. I was hoping it wouldn't come to that, but maybe
I'll have to create a new, fresh spreadsheet. That would be a LOT of work
though.

Other than that, it would be useful to see the file when it is
