John Jason Jordan joh...@comcast.net dijo:

I have LO 3.5.7.2 on Xubuntu 12.04. I am creating a document that has
18 pages of front matter, after which I want to start page numbering (I
don't need numbers on the front matter). I want page 19 to be numbered
page 1.

OK, I figured out that the footer is turned on in the page style.
That's cool, because I want a left and right page style anyway. I
modified the default left and right page styles to turn on the footer.

Then I applied the right page style to page 19 and the left page style
to page 20, after which I noticed that Writer had thoughtfully applied
right and left page styles to all the remaining pages in the document.
Cool.

Unfortunately, Writer also applied right and left page styles to the
first 18 pages also, so they now have the footer on them as well. I
don't want the footer on the first 18 pages. So I applied Default page
style to the first page, after which I noted that Writer had
thoughtfully applied default to page 2, and 3, and 4 ... and continuing
to the end of the document. No! I want only pages 1 - 18 to have the
Default page style. So I went to page 19 and reapplied right page, and
to page 20 and applied left page, and again Writer applied them to the
first 18 pages as well.

After some poking around I discovered that is controlled by the
Organizer tab, where you stipulate the following style. Unfortunately,
the selection is a drop-down that contains only the styles that
currently exist. You must choose one of them. There is no None of the
above option. Whatever you select, as soon as you apply that page
style to a page the style specified in the Organizer for the next page
will automatically be applied to the end of the document.

What this boils down to is that all the pages in your document must
always be the same style.

Should I just give up on Writer for this project?

Hi since LO 4.1.0 impress always starts  presentation in slice 1, no matter

this or is a bug?

Thanks in advance

Re: [libreoffice-users] was: LWP documents

2012-01-28 Thread soumalya ray
very well said.

On 28 January 2012 20:44, webmaster for Kracked Press Productions
webmas...@krackedpress.com wrote:

The issue back then was everyone had their own proprietary file format,
since there was no common one that could be used by any company, except
txt and other formats that did not keep the file's formatting properly.
No company would allow you to use their proprietary formats.

The there was a movement to create a common file format that everyone
could use. In the end, that set of document formats developed into the
 Open Document Formats.

Now any company can use this non-proprietaryset of document formats to
create, read, or edit documents created by other companies' packages.

Yes, it was total chaos. I remember having to manually edit some document
files in a text editor to remove the formatting codes so it could be read
by a different word processor, since the facility did not have that
package. That worked for some formats, but not others. Now there is one
standard ODF, although Microsoft would say it is their formats.

Yes MSO formats have dominated the field of what formats are used, but MS
did not share its proprietary formats with the competitors. OOo and LO had
to reverse-engineer its ability to read MSO formats. MS did try to get its
XML based formats [docx and such] made into an International standard,
but would not give up control of its development, which is a requirement to
make it fully an open standard - no one company can control an open
standard, since it would have its development controlled by an
international committee of companies and groups of people/users who want to
make it better. MS wanted to publish a version of their standard in a
way that there would be still proprietary parts to the open standard that
required MS products to use them properly. Also they wanted to decide what
would be done to that standard without any other company/group having a
say. This is a sore subject for some of us, with all of MS's legal [and
illegal] behind the scenes politics [and bribery] to make their open
formats be THE international standard after the vote decided on ODF as the
[one an only] ISO standard for office document formats.

Chaos was the past. Greed is what is going on now. The true use of a
free open format by most [hopefully all] of the office packages should be
our future. LO uses ODF as their default. As changes are proposed and
developed, LO should modify its filters/programming to use those
modifications of ODF properly in their created/edited documents. LO/TDF is
not in control of that format, but can offer up proposals to make it work
better in the real world of office use. MS wants every user to use their
open formats, but you must use their office package to use it fully and
properly. MS does not want to hand over the ability of its competitors to
read/write/edit files created with their packages, so that users no longer
need to use its office package. That was the way of most of the word
processors and office packages in the past. Most of them, excluding MS,
have decided that it would be better to go with the international movement
and be able to properly read/write/edit a single fully open set of document
formats, instead of forcing users to buy their package to read/write/edit
files that were created with their packages. It is better to use an ISO
 set of document formats.

Now these office packages will be used if and only if they are determined
to be the best/easiest package for the users to get their word done.

LO and other FOSS packages include the idea of best to include free in
 its definition.

For many of us, with limited budgets and other issues, choose free over
 paid packages.

Why pay for software when you can legally get software that does the same
thing for free? FOSS package creators do not have the must make as much
profit attitude as companies like MS does. That attitude is what drove
the file format chaos of the early days of desktop computing. Now that
that industry has grown out if its childhood years, we need to survive its
teenage years. The concept of true openness of the Internet hopefully
will make its adulthood a much better place, with less chaos and with a
more grown up attitude like what people should teach their children to
 make them a better adult.

Indeed, you can not add the same function twice this way. The work-around
for this is a duplicate of the original field in the source table.

As for the title of the complete chart, I can add that at the top of the

Try using FORMATCOLUMNS then select on many on the dialogue box.

If you are trying to have variable indent you can set the tab stops on the
ruler (ViewRuler) to where you want them. Then you can tab over.

Another possibility is to use a table without showing any borders.

In your command terminal run the commands:

 latex myfirstlatexfile.tex
 bibtex mybibliography.bib
 latex myfirstlatexfile.tex
 latex myfirstlatexfile.tex

View the file with the command:

 xdvi myfirstlatexfile.dvi

As an example (there are other possibilities depending on your LaTeX
 installation), convert to pdf:

 dvipdf myfirstlatexfile.dvi

View file in pdf reader (evince or xpdf):

 evince myfirstlatexfile.pdf

The example should demonstrate the power of LaTeX; beautiful pdf
output, perfect rendering of maths, automatic formatting of text,
 excellent organisation of references.

If you want a structured document containing references, maths and
consistent formatting, use LaTeX. If you want to write a quick
document without the need for maths or references, use a word
processor such as LO. There is no _requirement_ to use LaTeX with LO.
Personally, there does not seem to be a good reason to try and
incorporate LaTeX code into LO, unless LO wants to become a user
 interface to LaTeX, like LyX.

In the formula editor you can use shortcuts for subscripts (_) and

   Hi,

This is the first public announcement of a new project I started to
 create
an ODF backend for AsciiDoc. For those who don't know AsciiDoc,
 AsciiDoc

semantics, and as such, ideal for creating consistent documentation,
   articles and O'Reilly books ;-)

http://www.methods.co.nz/asciidoc

Being able to convert from AsciiDoc to ODF (onto other formats through
LibreOffice) is something that always appealed to me, and lead me to
create unoconv for non-interactive conversions, and get
involved with docbook2odf. However XSLT is not something I can
 introduce
with great confidence at companies as part of a technical documentation
workflow and docbook2odf was not the easiest to maintain.

The ultimate goal is for people to write basic documents in AsciiDoc,
convert them to ODF, PDF or Word documents while applying a style in
 the
process, without having to launch LibreOffice. However LibreOffice
 could
be used to visually fine-tune the styling and using it in future
conversions in order to give your documents a common identity
   (aka. corporate identity).

Result: no more messing around with XSLT or XSL-FO, and much more
 options

initially opened. I don't know if this still happens or not, but the
following fixed this issue for me (running Ubuntu 11.04) and others who were
 having the issue back then:

/*Change hosts setting in hosts file for LibreOffice on Ubuntu 11.04:*/

/In terminal, do gksudo gedit /etc/hosts/

/Add line as shown below: For instance, *127.0.0.1 don localhost don.(none)
 Originally it looks like this
 *127.0.0.1 localhost
 127.0.1.1 galaxy
*Add a line so it looks like this:*
 127.0.0.1 localhost
 127.0.1.1 galaxy
 127.0.0.1 galaxy localhost galaxy.(none)
 *save*
*Now OpenOffice.org Writer and Calc open fast when the network connection

choose bengali(as its my native language).keyboard shortcut appear in the

anyway when i need to type,i just clicked on it and bengali gets
activated.its system wide-works in firefox, chromiun,LO.you need not to
install any separate language pack for it to work.just the font.since
sanskrit uses devnagari script (also used by hindi),so that should not be a
problem.
but as i've said this is for ubuntu lucid;dont know about trisquel

  Hello Winston,
You can do the following - works for openoffice on debian 6.0, I suppose
 that's the same for libreoffice:

   * download sanskrit font sanskrit2003.ttf (

 http://www.omkarananda-ashram.**org/Sanskrit/itranslator2003.**htmhttp://www.omkarananda-ashram.org/Sanskrit/itranslator2003.htm-

 http://www.omkarananda-ashram.**org/Sanskrit/sanskrit2003.ziphttp://www.omkarananda-ashram.org/Sanskrit/sanskrit2003.zip)
   * copy sanskrit2003.ttf to /usr/share/fonts/truetype (that should be
the right path, but I'm not sure on your distro)

I just click on the font and a font preview window pops up with an Install
 Button
I use Ubuntu [Debian], and that is how I install fonts. All my fonts
appear in a .font hidden folder. So if they need to go into the folder you
listed, the need to go into the hidden one as well.

There is a font named Devnagri. I have seen over 200 versions of that
 font.

* supposing you have Gnome (if you use KDE let me know), go to
System -- Preferences -- Keyboard and choose the tab
Disposition (that should be the english name)
   * click add, choose By Nation, select India, click add
again, then close the keyboard preferences window
   * if it doesn't appear by itself, add a keyboard indicator on the
Gnome menu panel -- right clic on the panel, click add to panel
 and select Keyboard indicator
   * once you have the keyboard indicator on your panel, select indian
 layout, then open libreoffice writer
   * if the keyboard layout has changed... go back to indian again
   * select sanskrit 2003 font
   * and finally... write in sanskrit! :)

 Namastè! or I'd better write... नमस्ते :)

I've been thinking a lot about this lately as many of my clients are
coming to LibreOffice from Microsoft Office and I deal with both packages
quite a bit. Many times, one of the first things I do once LibreOffice is
set up is to show clients how to save in Microsoft format as opposed to
.odf. It's actually one of the first questions they ask. Lately, I've been
wondering about the wisdom of an open source package actively supporting a
secret format like the Office ones.

Would it not be preferable to support *only* saving in the open document
format and then providing a plugin for Microsoft Office users who needed it?
IMHO, allowing users to save in secret formats just continues the problem.
They're still using proprietary software, just packaged a different way.

  Thoughts?

  Cheers,

just checked it in both LO 3.3.4 and 3.4.3.'97 format (ie,ppt) showing the

*.doc format or *.ppt and reopen it, and it's different. Also, I've been
using Open Office / LibreOffice regularly for 1.5 years now, and I still
cannot find how to control bullets and numbering as easily as I could with
MS Office. For any document I have to send to a collaborator who uses MS
Office, I need to keep it primarily in the MS format to increase the chances
that I will at least know what is being changed without warning!

For example, in LibreOffice 3.4.3 Impress, create a dashed line and
save it in MS PowerPoint 97 format. Close then reopen it. When I did that
just now under Windows 7 x64, the line style was lost and it displayed
solid. If I do NOT have to share it with an MS Office user, then I keep it
in Open Office format. Otherwise, I must convert at some point to MS
format, and I should do that regularly at least until I identify at least
 one incompatibility problem.

  Best Wishes,
  Spencer

When there is a requirement to use an MS suffix, use Save As to do a copy

It's a good idea to do a search for similar bugs to see if someone has

 track-down
 exactly what the problem is.

In general i would say avoid the newer MS formats until they work better in
other programs. The older ones are more widely compatible with other
 programs.
The new formats (ending with X) do have the advantage that you can rename
 the
ending to .zip and then open as though they were a normal compressed
 file.
This helps extract pictures and things which is especially useful if the
 file
has been corrupted. So, MS have caught up with OpenDocument formats in
 that
 way.

 I made it this way:
 - I set the style to List 1 cont.
 - I set the background of List 1 cont. to a graphic and select the
  desired graphic from the filesystem
 - I indent the first line of List 1 cont.

Working quite well as far as I work with .odt file format.

If I try to save the document as .doc (2000/XP), then read it with an MS
Office 2010 Word, the indentation is OK but no background (no custom bullet,
 just a blank gap).

How to setup a custom list bullet then export it to .doc (2000/XP)?

PS: exporting to .docx makes me run into this known bug

saving to .doc until it's solved.

 Thank you.

On 4 September 2011 21:05, Tom Davies tomdavie...@yahoo.co.uk wrote:

Lol. NO. ;) lol. That would give you all my passwords for everything!

Ok, the simple one is something like
 1. take the website name and reverse it
 2. add 1 to each character so that a becomes b, b becomes c etc
 3. replace certain letters with special characters where possible, eg L
 might
always be ; (the key next to it or m becomes or something
Some sites don't allow special characters so i tend to have a simpler
 version
where letters become numbers for places such as ZdNet.

That sort of thing. So just decide on the rules you are going to use and
 keep
that a secret. Then you can generate your password for each site quite
 easily.
The trick is to avoid making your rules tooo complicated! You have to be
 able
to apply it easily without using penpaper or leaving a trace of how you
calculated the password. So it has to be easy to remember but difficult
 for
other people to guess at :)

 Hi Soumalya Ray and all,

I've been using Ubuntu for about 2 1/2 years, and have been through
 versions 8.10, 9.04, 9.10, 10.04, 10.10, and now 11.04. In my early days
with Ubuntu, the only way to get major upgrades to Open Office, Firefox,
etc., between versions, was to download them and install them directly. Yes,
I know everything is supposed to come from the Ubuntu repository, and for
the most part I do that. But not with previously Open Office upgrades, and
now with LibreOffice. I've seen posts here saying that the repository
versions are better. They are fancier, and tailored to the distribution. But
from time to time I've had functionality issues. I've never had any issues
with the downloads from Open Office and now LibreOffice. Therefore I follow
instructions I found several years ago on the Internet to upgrade Open
Office, and that I've modified for LibreOffice. You need to tweak these
instructions for each new release of LibreOffice with respect to the the
version number and also the menu information. These instructions have worked
perfectly for me many times on many computers, all running some version of
Ubuntu. But you will be leaving the Ubuntu versions.

Here are the directions for LibreOffice 3.4.3 32 bit for Ubuntu, and I
 would assume other Debian varities:

Download the Debian version from The Document Foundation
 (LibO_3.4.3_Linux_x86_install-**deb_en-US.tar.gz)
If it was not downloaded to the desktop, move it from the download location
 to the desktop.

Right click on the file and extract this file to the desktop. This will
give you a file called LibO_3.4.3rc2_Linux_x86_**install-deb_en-US/DEBS/

Open a terminal, and enter the following commands:
 sudo apt-get remove libreoffice*.*

 sudo dpkg -i ~/Desktop/LibO_3.4.3rc2_Linux_**x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/*.
 **deb

 sudo dpkg -i ~/Desktop/LibO_3.4.3rc2_Linux_**x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/**
 desktop-integration/**libreoffice3.4-Debian-menus_3.**4-302_all.deb

 sudo dpkg -i ~/Desktop/LibO_3.4.3rc2_Linux_**x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS/**
 desktop-integration/**libreoffice3.4-Debian-menus_3.**4-302_all.deb

CAUTION: I have never run multiple versions on the same computer. These
instructions will remove any and all versions presently installed and
install 3.4.3 only. In all instances, all of my default settings, such as
Java version, have remained in tact.

If you are using Unity, you will need to drag the new icons for the new
 version to the launcher bar.

Just a quick note for everyone else who has spent ages balancing the
 advantages
of the 3.3.x line with the 3.4.x branch. The 3.4.3 should give the
 advantages
of both. It is only just released so it's worth looking in the release

It's probably best to install alongside whichever release you are

This is the release i have been waiting for :)
Good luck and good work all :)

Every member must be an adult with a disability. That is one way I

Finding these old computers and giving then new homes, is another way of
volunteering. It is hard to find ones that either work or can be cheaply
made to work, with monitors the hardest to find. But for those who do not
have a computer, any old slow working computer, that can do basic office
work and access email and web pages through free dial-up access, is worth
 while to them.

Having my computer do volunteering with distributed computing projects is a
third way for my to volunteer, one that does not stress my back and neck
injuries, plus it is done 24/7/356 in the background without much
maintenance/input on my part except for choosing which projects to work with
and how much CPU time I allow the system to use. I am now in the top 1%

With working on the old P-III system, I decided to make a simple stripped
 down
CD distribution/install disc for LibreOffice. It is not browser based
 like the
original NA-DVD, but these old CD only systems would be quicker to not to
 use a
web browser to deal with the install files.

This way, those who do not have a DVD drive and do not have broadband
 access,
will be able to install LibreOffice.

I have included 3.3.x and 3.4.x Windows installs, the JRE, the
 documentation
 folder, and some basic dictionaries.

I added a PDF printout of the LO web site Windows installation info and a
Read-Me-First document that tell the person to install the JRE first
 [since you
get an install error freezing the install till JRE is installed].

Right now it is 697 MB. K3B states that I have 5.5MB free space on a CD,
 so the
CD is as full as it gets.

I could have more space if I choose either 3.3.x or 3.4.x versions, but I
 wanted
the users to have that option.

I also have more than half, I believe, of the extensions that was on OOo's

Subject: [libreoffice-users] Re: Always starts in Recovery mode when

Also, users may not understand the bug is caused by footnotes. Any
 document
with more than one footnote or endnote in a paragraph will crash every
 time,
from what I understand. But to diagnose the bug, you have to Google and
Nabble and Bug search on recovery or lock file because you have no
 idea
it is the footnotes causing the crash. In fact, if you only have one
document open, it does not even seem like a crash. The only evidence of
 the
crash is that you do not return to the Libre Office main screen, but that
would be normal in MS Word, for example. You are left with a lock file,
 and
on restart you have a confusing choice about Recovery - it may actually
 be
best NOT to do the recovery, assuming you saved your file before the
 crash.

So how could people complain about this bug, if they do not know it is
caused by footnotes? I was a very diligent bug hunter, so I found it.

In the case of a mailing list, there are two alternatives of
subscribtion, message by message, or the digest. Suppose that the link

question Message by message, or digest. The fellow can check the right

There is a Gnome font adding application, but most distros don't include

Adding fonts to the windows version of LE is simple, just add them to the

them in LE just as in any other applications.
But in Linux (I'm using Linux Mint 11 x64) I can't figure out how to get
 it

  *what I have tried:*
  1) copied the fonts to /usr/share/fonts/truetype/windows-fonts, updated
the font cache doing sudo fc-cache -fv, they show up using fc-list, but
 they
  didn't show up in LibreOffice.
  2) opened the font in font viewer and clicked install, same as above.

I'd prefer a solution that can be automated (I'm about to install
 hundreds
of fonts), but everything is appreciated.

  Thank you!

Re: [libreoffice-users] Displaying behaviour from old OpenOffice installation?

2011-08-09 Thread soumalya ray
interesting behaviour.waiting to listen others' comments

On 9 August 2011 12:11, brad brad46...@gmail.com wrote:

Hi. I've been running OpenOffice 3.3.0 on my Slackware 12.0 Linux
distribution (2.6.28.6 kernel). It's been running fine, except its
formatting of Microsoft Word documents doesn't marry with Word itself. I
have to run up Word if I want to make totally sure that indented columns
line up, lines don't overflow the right margin, etc. And when I open a
 Word
document that I've 'fixed' to look right in Word back in OpenOffice it'll
look unaligned, even though in Word itself it isn't.

Then, today, I installed LibreOffice 3.4.2 on a Fedora 14 virtual machine,
having read a comment that LibreOffice does a much better job of emulating
Word. Sure enough, LibreOffice worked perfectly in that virtual machine -
 rendering documents just like Word.

So I promptly went back to my 'real' machine and installed LibreOffice.

However LibreOffice is no different! When I open up a document it looks
exactly as it used to in OpenOffice (i.e. the text is unaligned, unfaithful
to how Word would render it). Also the icons in the various menu bars
 don't
look at all the same between LibreOffice running on my host machine versus
how it looks on the Fedora 14 VM.

I move the existing OpenOffice installation out of the way (by renaming the
/opt/openoffice.org* directories) and did a 'ps' listing to make sure that
the executables that I was running were all coming out of
/opt/libreoffice3.4. Clicking on the Help/About menu tells me that I'm
 running LibreOffice 3.4.2.

Right now I have no idea what to look at next. I guess something is
 hanging
around in my Slackware host machine that's telling LibreOffice to do the
wrong formatting? Is it possible that different versions of shared
libraries could cause LibreOffice to look and render quite differently?

 Many thanks for any tips!

wider range of formats and is more compatible with a wider range of other

 2003.

Are you sure you are saving as Doc rather than DocX? The DocX used by
 default
in MS Office 2007 2010 is not able to be read on earlier versions of MS
 Office
without installing extra an extra patch. Do they have problems opening
documents from anyone else or do they keep quiet about that? Again it
 would be
a good reason for upgrading to LibreOffice because it can read both.

In LibreOffice or OpenOffice choose to Save As Word (97/2000/XP)
 (scroll
back up the list 1 place) rather than the default Word format. Or as
 Graham
says use Rtf to avoid the whole issue.

At work i set the older MS Office formats as the default by going to
 Tools - Options - Load/Save - General
Then down at the bottom use the 2 drop-downs to set
Text document = Microsoft Word (97/2000/XP)
 Spreadsheet = Microsoft Excel (97/2000/XP)
 Presentation = Microsoft Powerpoint (97/2000/XP)
For the last 2 it's 2 back up the list as 1 back is a template which is
 well
 worth avoiding.

On the same page about halfway up i tend to change ODF format version
 right
back from 1.2 Extended (recommended) to 1.0/1.1 because MS Office 2010

2007 can just about read those. I don't know why they haven't tried the
 newer
spec, it's not exactly hidden or difficult or anything. I think the 1.2
 was not
around in 2007. Further down in the Writer section - Compatibility i tick
 all
the boxes just as the extra finesse.

ideally it should have been browser independent, but it is not so.

so i used the useragent changer add-on in firefox and completed the

my question is simple-when firefox able to fill up the form with the
add-on,why are they forcing us to use IE?i mailed them but nobody
 replied.

It could have been much worse. The designer of the form could just as well
have used MS-specific coding that would have made it impossible to use any
browser other than IE, thus insuring that only Windows users could be
accepted into the post-graduate program while Linus users (members of a
lower caste) would be excluded. Count your blessings.

The reason nobody replied to you is that they think you are a crank or
 madman.

My question is why would a designer use MS-specific coding?

I remember being told that people should never design a site that requires
the user to use one browser over another. You must test out your site to
make sure it runs on several browsers to make it readable/usable to
 everyone.

That designer must have used software that creates IE specific code
results. They still exist, but I sure would not use one. If he/she wrote
the form in a specific scripting language, like Javascript, Perl, PHP, etc.,
then there should be no reason to create an IE specific coding for the form
 site.

Firefox has a large market share, 10-15%. Then there is Mac users. There
is about 10%, as I have read, of college users using the Mac. IE only would
stop those users from filling out that form, along with the Linux users.
This is a problem and the designer should have not caused it.

Yes there is an IE simulator add-on for Firefox, but how many people know
about it? I forgot about it till it was brought up.

I wonder if the designer was a MS fan and did not want any non-MS person to
have an easy time filling out this required form?

It sounds like you need to columns if statements to select the data
 needed.

The if statement format is =if(condition=true, true
statement/action,false statement/action). For example column d has the
BMI data, a possible if statement is =if(d230,D2,). The execution is
to determine if the value in D2 is greater than 30, if true copy the
value of D2 into the cell and if false enter nothing. The last is a
method so you have a column of numbers and empty cells for functions
 like sum, average.

If you need to reference a cell on another sheet you use this notation
sheetname.cell or if you are referencing cell b3 on sheet3, sheet3.b3.
and in the formula =if(sheet3.b334,something,something else)

If you leave the true action or more commonly the false action, the
result in the cell will be TRUE or FALSE. Example, =if(b235,,a2+b2) and
=if(b235,a2+b2). In the first example your answer is TRUE or a2+b2 and
in the second is a2+b2 or FALSE. The TRUE and FALSE are Boolean values
not characters, a common trait in spreadsheets and one that catch new
users. If you want a text value you must use true and false (upper
case if desired). Note also, in the second example the false clause was
omitted but there must be a true clause.

Yes, hence the use of TCO (=Total Cost of Ownership).

Macs usually have a much lower TCO than MS because systems are less prone
 to
malware and need less maintenance. Also they are a status symbol so who
 cares
if it actually works or not?

TCO is not just licensing and re-training costs but includes a ton of
 other
factors. Such as time taken to roll it out across a large number of
 computers
along with patches, updates, settings. New or updated Support Contracts
 or
 in-house IT Staff training.

Of course OpenSource can usually mitigate against the re-training costs by
allowing products to be installed alongside existing competing ones
 allowing
migration in a series of steps
 1. Old system is kept as default so people can play with the newer one and
slowly get used to it. Training for a percentage of staff in rotation.
Roll-out can be done over a period of time. Compatibility checks.

 2. Newer system is made default but older one is still available, just
 more
difficult to get at. Follow-up training. Again this switch can be
 staggered
across the organisation rather than all-at-once.

 3. Older system stops being installed on newer or refurbished machines.

Costs will be higher, particularly in the 1st stage which can push people
 into
rushing it which ramps the costs up even more. Imo the 2nd stage is the
 one
worth giving the most time to. The first stage needs a fair fraction of
 that
time just to make sure things will work and that there are enough trained
 people
to help colleagues if there is trouble but it's only at the 2nd stage where
people will really take it seriously or even notice it at all.

Elected governments are seldom interested in longer term results. They
 need
fast results in order to get re-elected. It's tricky to get a longer-term
 view
without compromising important values. The Uk attempts it reasonably well
 but
it's far from perfect. Anyway the only relevance that sort of thinking has
 is
on how to set-up our own BoD and i think that's better discussed on a
 different
 list.

I started this thread saying that with a guy at the helm that was a MS
 high
executive and he would not be the one who would nudge the people under
 him
  towards using non-MS packages.

Yes, switching from MS Office to LibreOffice will cost time in man hours
 to
learn how to use it instead of MSO. Yes, there will be costs to export
 all of
MSO complex formatted files to version that are 100% readable by non-MS
packages. Yes there are a lot of different costs in switching even if the
  software is free.

I agree that having the original software and the new open-source one
 sitting
side by side on the same machine may help. Having all new or refurbished
machines include only open-source versions could help.

The big issue is to always spend the time and effort to train people in
 the use
of these new options. I did not switch to OOo/LO from MSO over night.
  As I
learned to use open-source versions, over paid ones, I slowly stopped
 using
packages like MSO in favor of the open-source replacements. The final
 blow to
MSO was when I decided to use Ubuntu as my default desktop OS.

In the end, if we want our local, regional, or country governments, to
 use open
source we need to voice our support for it. The more people who tell our
governments that we want to see them use open-source packages, the more
 likely
that they will hear what we are saying and see if it can be done. If our
elected officials do not do what we want them to do, we elect others we
 think
  will.

As stated before, the issue of long term contracts for MSO and other
 packages
can be a problem. But if and when those contracts are up for renewal, we
 need
to tell our governments to not renew them. If they are not, over time
 all of
these contracts will go away and then there will be none in the way of
 using
  open-source alternatives.

Is there a way to get whomever is in charge of the mail list program put

 people.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: help recovering? SOLVED

Admittedly a fairly unsophisticated user of the office suite, I overlooked

 Find the backup copy.

I didn't even realize one existed! But after continuing to review posts in
this excellent forum and getting a few ideas here and there about how to
stabilize my also-frequently-crashing office suite, I became aware of the
option in the Tools / Options menu that allows for a backup copy to be
saved. Once I found the Paths option and located the hidden subfolders
where backups and various other LibreOffice system files are saved, I
discovered (to my great joy!) the most recent backed up copy of that
 trashed
 file!

I thank all the folks that attempted to recover the document and offered
 suggestions.
But in this case, the simplest answer of all seems to have been just
 overlooked by everyone.
It's a complex set of tools and software, so it's not surprising that there
is a lot to learn if one wants to become a proficient user. The experience
and subsequent follow-up has taught me a lot.

I just really appreciate the hard work and dedication of the entire team of
folks who have made this open source solution even POSSIBLE and I thank you
all for your continued efforts at improving it.

Overall satisfactory and very beneficial results have been achieved.

In the csv import dialog is a preview of the data. Click on the column

There choose 'Date(YMD)'. Now the dates should be recognized as date already

 file.

I created an .xls file with OpenOffice 3.3 on OSX 10.6.8. Opening the file
now on OSX 10.7, OpenOffice shows the document correctly (row height
0,67cm), but LibreOffice shows the row height at around 0,44cm, which
 makes
about a third of the text to be chopped off.

The issue appears in about 7% of my .xls files, and on some the text is
chopped just slightly. It's not a big deal to re-adjust the row height for
 a
few documents, but this might be something the devs would like to look
 into.

One of the files with the issue can be found at:
 http://db.tt/uBzFayj

You can adjust height and width of all rows and columns simultaneously.
Click the space at the corner, top of the row numbers, left of the column
letters (this selects the entire spreadsheet)
next drag the first row bottom line downward as much as you like. It will
adjust all rows. Same for columns.

The Doc format is much better than the DocX for sharing with other people.
  Even
DocX files made in MS Office 2007 tend to go a bit wrong when viewed with
 MS
Office 2010 and similarly the other way around. Of course any MS Office
 before
their 2007 can't read DocX at all.

MS Office 2007 was the first MS Office to be able to read OdT format but
 they
use the old spec despite the newer spec being easier to find out about and
implement. The DocX spec is very secretive and even MS don't implement it
properly. So, it's better to use the older Doc format so that almost
 anyone can
 open the document.

To increase compatibility with MS Office go up to the Tools menu and then
right down to Options at the bottom. The pop-up contains many useful
 settings
and is well worth having a look at but for now just click on the + beside
Load/Save, then click on General. Somewhere in the middle is ODF
 Format
Version. Change the drop-down beside that from 1.2 Extended
 (recommended) to
1.0/1.1. Files saved in that format should be easily opened in MS Office
 just
by double-clicking on them. If you look just under there you can change
 the
Text Document format to Microsoft Word (98/2000/Xp). Similarly for
Spreadsheets and presentations although for those 2 you need to scroll back
 up
the list 2 places instead of just 1 otherwise documents get saved as
 templates
 which gets really messy.

 Good luck and regards from

DocX just wont work with this table in LibreOffice and i don't know why.
  DocX
does often have troubles of this sort so it's best to stick with Doc. DocX
'should' be smaller (as 'should' Odt) because they are compressed files.
  You

document that seems hopelessly corrupted and unrecoverable.

   Hi :)
Attachments get removed before the email gets to the list. Can you
  upload
   the
files somewhere and then give us a link? Alternatively you could use
 my

   happened.

The Doc format is much better than the DocX for sharing with other
  people.
Even
DocX files made in MS Office 2007 tend to go a bit wrong when viewed
 with
   MS
Office 2010 and similarly the other way around. Of course any MS
 Office
   before
their 2007 can't read DocX at all.

MS Office 2007 was the first MS Office to be able to read OdT format
 but
   they
use the old spec despite the newer spec being easier to find out about
  and
implement. The DocX spec is very secretive and even MS don't implement
  it
properly. So, it's better to use the older Doc format so that almost
   anyone can
   open the document.
