castor is someplace on your machine defined as the linux node's hostname.

dhcp-client does deliver the defined hostname in the dhcp

What does 'hostname' report? and 'hostnamectl' report as the hostname?

Hostname gives castor and hostnamectl gives castor static and a lot of
information like bios version , type laptop , OS version etc. etc.

Openh264, ffmpeg,etc.

2023-11-29 Thread Ger van Dijck

Hi Fedora/Linux Lovers,

I have the impression that the problems with Fedora-Cisco-Openh264 and
FFmpeg gives me the idea  of  "The ever continued story of
Coronationstreet".

When I do an dnf update I get the following message:

Fedora 39 openh264 (From Cisco)-x86_64 Errors during downloading for
fedora-cisco-openh264.

Statuscode 404 for
https://codecs/fedoraproject.org/openh264/39/x86_64/repodata/repomd.xml
(IP 18.133.140.134).

Cannot download repodata/repomd.xml : All mirrors were tried.

Failed to download metadata for "fedora-cisco-openh264".

I found a solution in downloading  Repo Terra 39 Fedora  and could
install openh264  :  And all , you dont believe it functioned.

I had a very helpsome discussion with Tom Horsley, Samual Sieb,Jef
Walton and Go Cames.

When giving dnf info openh264 I got from Terra 39 Fedora installed
packages : Repos Terra 39 Fedora openh264 Fedora URL

Linux Lovers,

With my respects to Andre Robatino , Samuel Sieb , Harald Labes , ja (?) ,

Giving Dnf install ffmpeg creates the following message :

Error/Problem

ffmpeg.6.0-16.fc39.x86_64 from rpmfusion requires
ffmpeg-libs(x86_64)=6.0-16.fc39 but none of the providers can be installed.

Conflicting/Requests

Nothing provides libopenh264.so7 (64 bit) needed by
ffmpeg-lib.6.0-16.fc39.x86_64 from rpmfusion.

So by the way the Tor browser is inable to play videos.

Question : How to solve this problem ?

Broken Packages DNF update /Dorian Rosse/Tom Horsley. FFmpeg / VLC.

2023-08-10 Thread Ger van Dijck

Hello All,

In the recent past I had problems with skipping packages with broken
dependencies : ffmpeg-libs , libavdevice : Dorian Rosse adviced to
install with  " rpmfind ffmpeg-libs and libavdevice".

No result.

Tom Horsley did advice  "dnf swap ffmpeg-free ffmpeg --allowerasing".

Result  skip broken dependencies ffmpeg (new !) , ffmpeg-libs ,
libavdevice : So no result.

I solved the problem with dnf update ffmpeg --allowerase and all
problems where sollved.

Now Tom has a new problem with VLC player. Well so have I : What is
wrong with ffmpeg ?

Dnf wants to update Live 555 to 2023.06.20-2.f38 , when doing so the vlc
player cannot be launched anymore.

So I found the following solution "dnf install vlc" : The result a
downgrade on Live 555 and big surprice all (VLC) runs fine !

So do not update Live 555.

One way or another I have the impression that DNF is for the most of us
to complex.

Nice to hear from you all.

Teamviewer/Quickassist install Windows XP ?

2021-12-20 Thread Ger van Dijck

Hai All,

Maybe a strange question because it concerns not Fedora : Teamviewer
does not support Windows XP and Windows 7 anymore .

So the question is how can I download and install Quickassist for
Windows XP and Windows 7 ?

I am not in love with Microsoft.

Any help would be usefull.

Regards,

Ger van Dijck.

Well of course it doesn't. There's a space before the final .org that
makes it into an invalid url.

Hay Joe

Quite right this is a type error !  In the application when I choose
Applications /System Tools /Problem Reporting the URL is spelled
correctly .  What now ?

Has it something to do with Bugzilla ?  I think it is very important to
report problems so that we can create a solution .

Hi George ,

A bit late but :

How to install Clonezilla:
===

1 . rpmfusion-(non)(free)-release-34.noarch.rpm is inslalled.
2 . https://github.com/rpmsphere/noarch/tree/master/r gives no such file

3 . rpm -Uvh rpmsphere-release*rpm gives file not found by
glob:rpmsphere-release*rpm.

4 . dnf install clonezilla therefore gives no result.

Be so kind to inform me,

socks ) and then reinstall with dnf install , but I get the same
result the torbrowser-launcher crashes , so I think I have to delete
all of the in the past installed tor issues. How do I delete or move
the whole bunch as you suggest ?

Before updating I got the message "The browser has to be updated and
maybe has been hacked".

As Paul pointed out a mismatch in the update version or a python problem ?

Opera Mail & Browser after upgrading Fedora31 to Fedora32 . Ed Greshko.

2020-05-03 Thread Ger van Dijck

Hi all , Hi Ed ,

I did some thinking and studying : A long time ago I found somewhere
opera-stable-54.0.2952.71-1.fc29R.x86_64.rpm but I don't know and have
fotgotten where .
I installed it and in the version fc29, -fc30, and -fc31 it runs fine. In
the version fc32 the application won't launch : So I reinstalled it and
got the message already installed.
I can imagine that this old rpm (fc29) is outdated ,so the question is
where can I find the newest version (opera-stable-68.0.3618.63-0 ((fc32R))
.x86_64.rpm if it exists and install it and then try to launch this newest
application onder fc32 ?

Second problem : Also a long time ago , don't ask me when or where I found
opera-12.16-1860.x86_64.rpm and installed it. Purpose was and is the
possibility to use opera mail wich long ago was under fedora to use and
since the browser was separated opera mail is not running under fedora .
In the versions fc28 , -fc29 , -fc-30 and -fc31 no problems runs fine . In
the version fc32 it is gone . So I tried the reinstall it and got the
following messages

Libgstreamer-0.10.so.0
Libgstbase-0.10.so.0
Libgstvideo-0.10.so.0

are missing.

How going on ?

Kind regards ,

Ger van Dijck.

Opera Browser and Opera Mail under Fedora 32.

2020-05-02 Thread Ger van Dijck

Hi all,

I upgraded Fedora31 to Fedora32 and suddenly missed Opera Mail and Opera
Browser.

Question : Is there a way (rpm) to install  Opera under F32 ?

I had a solution under F31 : For the Browser I did install Opera stable
and for the Mail agent I did install very long ago a older version (I
belief 12) with the browser and mail combined .

Any help would be usefull ,

* I should do a back-up, and

F31 seems to have had more problems than the past several (6+ years) of
releases. I don't have any data; that's just my impression based on
this list. (I am curious what actual data would show.)

I (Ger van Dijck) had no problems upgrading Fedora30 to Fedora31.

question 1:
In addition to doing a back-up and making a live image USB stick, what
preparations should I make to, within reason, minimize the probability
of problems when I do the upgrade?

Just make a backup.

question 2:
How do a make an f30 Fedora Workstation Live image on my USB stick? I
found a place in the Fedora website to do f31, but I seriously want f30
for this.

Install Fedora Mediawriter : It is easy to work with and needs no further
explanattion.

Thank-you!

That's no surprise. Some authors deliberately create broken DVDs in an
attempt to foil piracy. Because the discs appear to work in some of
the players that they test, they assume that what they've done is okay
(Sony did a similar stupid stunt with audio CDs years ago).
And then there's just manufacturing incompetence. One of my DVD
recorders creates crappy broken discs that spew out similar errors to
your logs. Its discs may or may not work in some players, or work
partly (e.g. you can start the disc playing, but if try fast-forwarding
or rewinding, it instantly fails).

I agree . So try another DVD , but .

I installed VLC as follows rpm -ivh
http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpm-fusion-free-relase
stable.noarch.rpm

Then the same but now change free in nonfree , then dnf install vlc

optional dnf install python-vlc.

Succes.

When doing so I did not encounter any problem.

Scanning with HP4620 . Ed Greshko.

2019-03-10 Thread Ger van Dijck

Hi Ed ,

When running scanimage -L only the laptopcamera is discovered as scanning
device (Dell Inspiron 3741). So the scanning function is missing .

Your explanation for the Bonjour software is clear : So I did following :
I installed root-net-bonjour-6.14.04-1.fc29 , and root-6.16.10-3.fc29 ;
both x86_64 . (Avahi etc.)

Then I did run hp-get < ipnumber > (All In Officejet HP4620 on WLAN.)

And praise the Lord ! Everyting functionates , running hp-check I get 2
warnings ( HP printer is not hplip installed and /.hplip/hplip.conf
could not access file , no such file or directory ) and 1 error ( Cups
packcage is missing or not running ).

So the scan problem is solved , but I still can not follow the logic :
Maybe out there is someone who can explain.

I must thank all of you for help , Ed Greshko in particular for his
patience .

One other thing to check.

With the HP4620 on the network run

scanimage -L

the important thing is that this command uses Bonjour (which use mDNS,
or Multicast Domain

Name System) to discover devices on the network.

If, and I tested this on my HP 8710, if Bonjour is disabled in the
printer's web interface

then it will not be detected as a scanner.

This also answers my own question about how the URI is determined at
least in one case

If I have Bonjour enabled on my printer I get 2 devices.

device `hpaio:/net/HP_OfficeJet_Pro_8710?hostname=hp' is a
Hewlett-Packard

HP_OfficeJet_Pro_8710 all-in-one
device `hpaio:/net/hp_officejet_pro_8710?ip=192.168.1.166=false'
is a

Hewlett-Packard hp_officejet_pro_8710 all-in-one

If I disable Bonjour I only get 1 device

device `hpaio:/net/HP_OfficeJet_Pro_8710?hostname=hp' is a
Hewlett-Packard

HP_OfficeJet_Pro_8710 all-in-one

I'm guessing that the single entry is as a result of installing the
printer/fax/scanner

under hplip. But I've not yet determined where that entry comes from.

Hi Ed ,

I hope I do not annoying you and hope this is the last question : Inform
me how I can able/disable Bomjour ?

So, run hp-plugin as root to download and install the Plugin.

How can I solve this problem ? _

You can solve this problem by not using this ancient, unsupported
piece

of software which contains a lot of unpatched security bugs.

There are quite a few PDF readers available in the Fedora repositories
(Okular, Evince, MuPDF, …) you can choose from. Very likely there's
already one installed that came with your DE. Otherwise, pick the one
that suits you best.

Hi,

I agree that choosing an OSS pdf viewer is the best. However is there a
viewer that can handle animation? This is the only reason I sometimes
use

acroread.

An example of what I am talking about is in this file (created by
LaTeX):

there is a file in there called stadoc.pdf which has the animation on
Page 5, Movie 1.

https://wol-prod-cdn.literatumonline.com/pb-assets/assets/20491573/Stat_AutClass_v4_rev-1508937938000.zip

When I try to read it in evince or okular, in the first case, nothing
happens with the animation. In the case of okular, I get a blank gray
square where the animation is. (All this with F28: I do not know if
upgrading F29 will fix that in the sense that if there is an upgrade to
evince or okular.)

Joining the chorus of those who use AdobeReader, two benefits:
- Adobe has tabs rather than individual windows in order to view several
documents at once;
- Adobe's save-as-text function sometimes works better than pdftotext;
since
there is no standardization of pdf files, sometimes one tool renders
the text

better than the other (YMMV)

I managed to install AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i486linux_enu.rpm and it works
correctly.

First:
dnf install libidn1.34-1.34-1.fc29.i686

Then,
rpm -ivh --force AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i486linux_enu.rpm

YMMV & fyi,

Problem AdobeReader after upgrade F28 to F29.

2018-11-02 Thread Ger van Dijck

Hi all ,

I did un upgrade from Fedora28 to Ferdora29 (x86_64) , I had to add in
the procedure tho option --allowerase .

The Acrobat Reader does not funktionate anymore : So I tried to reinstall
it with AdbeRdr9.5.5-1_i486linux_enu.rpm .

I get the message "build transaction failure , conflicting requests ;
nothing provides libidn.so.11 needed by AcrobatReader_enu-9.5.5-1.i486 .

How can I solve this problem ? _

Kind regards,

Ger, this is the Fedora list, not the CentOS list. Having said that,
CentOS 6 is quite old and you should consider upgrading to CentOS 7.

Suddenly I get the following massage :

The package download failed. Could not contact source "beid-release" ,

What does ths mean , and how can I correct it ?

It means you've enabled a repo called "beid-release" which is apparently
not available any more. You can find which repo file it's buried in by
doing (as root):

# grep -r "beid-release" /etc/yum.repos.d/*

You can bypass it by editing the file that contains that repo and
changing the line:

enabled=1

to

enabled=0

in that section and repeating the yum operation, or by doing the yum
operation and including the

--disablerepo=beid-release

flag. However, it'd be better if you aimed this sort of question at the
CentOS mailing lists.

Rick/Samuel , Indeed this was a repo not available anymore , I have
learned a lot:

Sorry for using the Fedora Net : I am so used to drop my questions there.

Problem solved , tanks.

In looking up the specs for this system

PROCESSOR / CHIPSET
CPU Intel Pentium 2127U / 1.9 GHz

And checking on the CPU on the Intel site

http://ark.intel.com/products/75191/Intel-Pentium-Processor-2127U-2M-Cache-1_90-GHz

Shows

Intel® 64 ‡ Yes
Instruction Set 64-bit

So, it seems you've installed Fedora 32 bit on a 64 bit capable system
and

unfortunately skype doesn't support 32-bit.

Then the next question is when having a 64 bit capable machine how I can
install instead Fedora26 32 bit a 64 bit version of Fedora26 ?

Thanks for the quick answer.

Ed Greshko wrote that he had no problems installing Skype 5.4.0.1-1

""his"" seize is 69 MB , mine 72,1 MB.

So I think the problem is the difference in the architecture : Are
there two

different versions ?

Yes, there should be 2 version. One for 32 bit and one for 64bit. It
seems as if
their site will detect your version depending on what your browser
reports to them.

So, the questions I would have are

1. What is the output of "uname -r" for your system.

2. How did you download? From the system you are installing? What
browser are you

using?

  Hi Ed ,

output uname -r is 4.11.11-300.fc26.i686.

downloading from the system I am installing Dell Inspiron 3721 under
Fedora 26 with the Firefox Browser.
