Hi Folks, I regret to report that Moblin, my hope for a mobile linux, is dead. My hw is Asus, EeePC 1000, 1GB ram, 40GB disk. Anyone running FC (11 maybe?) on hw like this? Wow! i fired this email off when i got home last night and it stirred quite an exchange. however, a bit of background will show my reaction is not a knee-jerk on my part, just the culmination of a path turning sour. i used to work for danger before M$ bought it out. i enjoyed the mobile sidekick platform we provided despite its targeted youth market. its use for google/email on the go was Great! this is what i must have in my truck. when i later got laid off last spring, i decided to look for a way to use Linux in a similar portable form factor. after some looking about, the hot setup seemed to be a netbook and moblin. i chose moblin as i reasoned that backed by Intel (motivated by atom sales) should be a solid platform/open src steward to begin on. i selected a product direction of OBD to USB reasoning there may be a few gearheads in the fedora crowd that should also enjoy a window to their automotive computers. the project kept me busy all summer while i looked for new work. however, i was less than overwhelmed by the moblin desktop. in a landscape precious screen, they dedicate 1/3 to twitter/social networking(waste), 1/3 to the last jpg's i've looked at (yawn), and a paltry 1/3 for my desktop with icons calendar space. 1/3 is not enough. i really just want a mobile fedora; i have it at home work, i use it, i like it. as for meetoo, err, meego, its just another social centric os trying to compete with M$ products yet to be released. i hate a deployment that hides all the behind the scenes stuff i want to know about. moblin died for me because it failed to live up to my needs. my next posts will focus on adapting fc11 to a small form factor. thx again to all that reported using fc on the eeepc. as for meego, you and the kids have fun, i got work to do. I also make a few gui tweaks that I am used to doing on older hardware (getting rid of gradients in window borders and so on). HELL No! Trading one flakey vendor for a closed vendor is no plan. I am going to track down best practice for shoehorning fc11 to my netbook. I'm probably misunderstanding what you're trying to do, but here's how I do it: on my Aspire One: 1. Download a live cd 2. Install livecd-tools 3. use livecd-iso-to-disk to place the iso image on a bootable USB stick 4. fc12 tap not working EeePC

how to enable 11N wireless?

Before you go looking too far, if you're a Gnome user, clicking on the NM applet shows similar information -- the ESSID names are listed, along with a mini-bargraph of signal strength and icons for encryption and for peer-to-peer. Something's wrong then, as it does, here. And that'd be the only way it could work and let you pick another network to connect to (by listing all that's currently available to you). i'll play with it for awhile and see how it goes. i've been having fun 'war driving' with my netbook. i guess the next app i'll want is a hotspot map! :) while there are hotspot maps, so far, for my area its very under populated. thx again, jackc... this wont help you , but for scope... i have fc12 on my netbook. it initially came with the chipset you have now. i swapped it out for an Intel wireless card and my wireless connects are fine out of the FC box. i found the rt2860 support very flaky over the xandros/moblin os's so that is why i swapped it out. my only gripe is i lost my 11n support from moblin... :( On 03/15/2010 02:22 PM, Kevin Martin wrote: I've installed a wireless nic that is rt2860 based. FWIW, the kernel is the 2.6.32.9-70 version. Any help, thoughts, or prayers appreciated. I don't understand why the Mode entry in /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not seem to have any relationship to the Modes shown in the System/ Display gui. I coded in 1920x1080 in xorg.conf. The Display gui shows 1024xsomething and 1280x960. dealing with states of drowsiness, FC12, netbook

On my old asus laptop (running f11 i think) this didn't work properly, though it would try to resume. If you don't want it to hibernate at all, you need to change the power profile. quick heads up here, i swapped versions a bit too starting out. i got snarled by the .skype dir remaining that yum didnt remove. installing a second Skype version got real bizarre results. i finally moved .skype .skype- and reinstalled the cited version, then i got happiness. I kept digging deeper on this problem and this am found the solution (or at least one solution, there may be others). it amounted to moving the keys in my .ssh to *.bak names, logging out, logging back in, logging into the remote server, exiting, moving the keys back to their proper names and loging into remote again, this time with no pwd reqd!!! gotta love google and james wagner (jimmyg.org). Normally that is handled with routing. I've hit a couple bumps in this investigation. the boss first said check into comcast cable (static ip's available), but then he was assuming it was a t1 serve that could be bonded with our current t1. so far, t1 cable modem are separate, discreet options. i found mushroom networks and they offer a bonding appliance that says its smart about load balancing, e.g. using all bonded lines. mark pointed out vyatta, that looks interesting too. and it was reduced to less than a 1/3 of total screen in useful space.
When moblin died, i bailed and have been using fc12 on my netbook since.
I am Much happier. My netbook, on a recent holiday, was the perfect
travel companion...
My only glitch was wifi reception in a BB that was made of Really solid
wood( i had to work near the router).

Since most external drives already have NTFS on them you will need to use something else to label the drive. However, the automount should work regardless of a label. In the case of NTFS you may need to install the ntfs-3g package to get automount to work. My files seem configured appropriately. Unfortunately, the system does not come up on the network. And, when I check Available to all users in nm-applet, the connection is dropped and disappears from the wireless list. FWIW, it works fine on my netbook. Hi Folks, I just loaded VLC on my netbook and was able to view my recent manta ray night diving video. However, given its normal power saving procedure, it dims the screen shortly after the video starts. Is there any prevailing wisdom how to handle this feature during a video display? On my F13, the first screensaver menu entry runs the xscreensaver-demo which I am unable to kill, even via sudo, even with signal 9. I hope some fedoral developer sees this :) So, select the second screensaver entry and that will bring up a gui for you to set what to do when idle. You can uncheck the box and it will not blank the screen. Great! suggestions for png markup
Hi Folks, I work in a web-based application provider context. As there are issues/comments regarding the display of application, its common for me to use the screenshot tool to grab a copy of the screen display to a .png file for support to address. that part is fine. What I am missing is an easy way to markup a .png with boxes, arrows, etc to further communicate what it is about the .png to be addressed. gimp seems too heavy weight for this, OO's draw isnt that friendly, and ! am unaware of other options. This is where y'all come in, anyone got a good suggestion for my missing markup tool? Last year, I was working for M$ and vista had one nice feature, a simple screenshot/markup tool in one app. Thats kind of what I am looking for in terms of usage... anyone?
