Thank you Dennis! I don't use open office as many other "super users" might
but it definitely serves my purpose nicely. Keep on doing the great job!

Yes, I think it would be a serious loss. Not just for up to 50 million users,
but also for the stability of the OpenDocument Format and for users who would
be better served in the future.

At the same time, the practical limitations are what they are and it depends
more on those who can develop the software and not so much on those who benefit
freely from using it.

You can get the SDK from https://www.openoffice.org/download/ (see
right column); we only have one Windows build, so you won't find two

This was an exceptionally bad e-mail from Dennis, that was interpreted
in an exceptionally misleading way by people who for some reason would
profit from a wrong interpretation. I see it as a "what if" game, but
a very bad one.

You can follow the discussion on the dev list and you will see that
active developers are feeling disappointed by the message but are
still thinking that the best solution is just to continue working on
the next release as usual. This, of course, won't make news.

In addition, every hardcore developer knows that windows, *nix'es and

are full of backdoors to begin with - not only in the kernel, but in
many other apps and libraries.

But hey ... it's the nature of the age we are living in.

end of Apache?

2016-09-02 Thread Felmon Davis

folks,

the following statement is of interest to users of OpenOffice:

Contemplating the possible retirement of Apache OpenOffice

Outgoing Apache OpenOffice project management committee (PMC) chair
Dennis Hamilton has begun the discussion of a possible (note possible
at this point) shutdown of the project. "In the case of Apache
OpenOffice, needing to disclose security vulnerabilities for which
there is no mitigation in an update has become a serious issue. In
responses to concerns raised in June, the PMC is currently tasked by
the ASF Board to account for this inability and to provide a remedy.
An indicator of the seriousness of the Board's concern is the PMC been
requested to report to the Board every month, starting in August,
rather than quarterly, the normal case. One option for remedy that
must be considered is retirement of the project. The request is for
the PMC's consideration among other possible options."

more details at:
I think the article is from 09/01/2016.
