Beautifully put. And right on target.
Yes, "Open Source" products (like Apache OpenOffice) aren't for
everyone. Millions of AOO users (I doubt if anyone really knows how many)
dearly LOVE it. Part of that "love" is not paying anything except your own
initiative & talents in making it work for YOUR chores. That, and the joy
in knowing you're no longer pouring cash into Bill Gates bluejeans.
Spend a few minutes learning what AOO can do for YOU. And by all means,
contribute by helping others like yourself sort out the quirks for the
benefit of us all.

Dear Dennis, I'm not sure where you received your copy of OpenOffice,
it's a free OpenSource program, so there isn't really a company you're
dealing with. You received responses from people just like you. Your
initial email was kinda rude itself, so you received kinda rude responses.

OpenSource isn't for everyone, it takes a bit of individual
responsibility in learning, using, and a simple bit of respect when
asking for help.

It seems you may be more lucky with buying a product that includes paid
support. I personally haven't gotten great support for paid programs
either, however I still try and be as respectful of those I'm contacting
paid or free. You might want to try engaging in a conversation from that
perspective.

With OpenSource you too should understand ANYONE can send ANYTHING they
want to you, so be ready for the delete button, and keep an eye out for
the emails that are the gold that do indeed help you.

Sincerely,

Shari

How do you know they don't work if you weren't able to download them?

It's not our program. We are only users helping each other out. Nothing
more. This is the user's mailing list, it's not a paid support or anything
(the email address is ”us...@openoffice.apache.com”, that should tell you
something). This is very clear when you subscribe to the mailing list; I
don't know why some people don't seem to be able to read.

Hi,

(1) please download a new copy from www.openoffice.org/download/.

(2) if you continue to have difficulty then please provide details about your
antivirus program and the exact warning message you are getting.

Remember that everyone here on the list is a user like you and a volunteer.

Hi -

Would you please provide details about which templates you had trouble with so
that it can be investigated by a volunteer. There have been some issues with
our templates site.

Please keep in mind that all support and development of OpenOffice is done by
unpaid volunteers. If you still want help then please provide details of the
exact URLs that failed.

Dave

Re: RUDE

2018-04-30 Thread Howard Blum
No employees for this, only volunteers.

You are blaming the FREE application for most likely sounded like an issue
with your computer and not the application.

If you want to make demands of a customer support team of employees go buy
Microsoft products and pay for the ability to bad-mouth a product.

Bye bye.

If you sent it here, it is NOT an employee - which would be obvious by the
email address. This is a group of people from all over the world in a forum
where you can ask for help.

Attached is a #10 envelope "template" with your name in the Sender
box, just fill in the correct data and save the changes. You can
change the fonts to whatever you like. Leave the addressee blank
until needed then just fill in that info when needed and print,
then don't save those changes and it reverts back to just your
sending data and ready for the next use!

It's worth saying that it is more sensible to save your work as a
template than as a document as you have here: then you can lose the
scare quotes around "template"! Go to File | Templates > | Save...
and save your template, probably in My Templates. Your work is
saved as a .ott template instead of a .odt document. When you need
to use it, you can find it via File | New > | Templates and
Documents... or in the drop-down menu from the down-arrow next to
the New button in the Standard toolbar or using the Templates...
button on the start screen.

The advantage of this method - designed into OpenOffice - is that
when you invoke the template you are presented with a new, unnamed
document based on that template instead of the template itself. So
you don't need to remember not to save the changes after you have
complete individual document based on the template. We've all made
the mistake of overwriting a previous document unintentionally!
Indeed, you may want to save individual documents you create based
on any template.

We all work a bit differently and I have have a folder on my desktop
with many .odt files that I can double click on that open in
OpenOffice. I then fill in the areas needed, be they for an envelope
or a custom made business letter, etc. and then print. If I need to
save the document, I just give it a file name and a place to live,
otherwise I close the file without saving. I choose not to use the
built-in template feature in OpenOffice, whatever makes you smile!

For the avoidance of doubt, I'm perfectly happy, of course, that you
should choose to use an awkward and fragile technique. My purpose in
writing was to ensure that your audience were not distracted by this
and knew that there was a convenient and reliable method built in to
the product.
