Hallo,

bitte keine Distro-Wars auf dieser Liste. Ich hatte Knoppix nur erwähnt 
weil es gerade für den Zweck des Ausprobierens entwickelt wurde, recht 
bekannt und ausgereift ist. Dass andere Linux-Distributionen auch 
Live-Systeme anbieten, hatte ich ebenfalls erwähnt.


Jede(r) Linux-Nutzende hat ihre/seine Gründe dafür, warum er/sie die 
Distribution nutzt, die sie/er nutzt. Diese Gründe kann man sachlich 
diskutieren. Aber bitte nicht auf dieser Liste.


Ich schreibe dies nicht, weil es hier "off topic" wäre, sondern weil 
eine solche Diskussion geeignet erscheint, einen Linux-Anfänger zu 
verwirren, und daher kontraproduktiv sein kann.


Ich rate AnfängerInnen, trotz eigener Präferenz, immer, die 
Linux-Distribution zu nutzen, die auch der "Nachbar" nutzt. Dann kann 
man dort Hilfe erhalten, die man als Newbie sicherlich braucht. Später 
kann man dann noch immer wechseln, wenn man einen Überblick gewonnen hat.


Das Schöne an Freier Software ist, dass man in der Regel eine teilweise 
ziemlich große Auswahl hat. Das Problem ist allerdings, dass man meist 
zumindest vorläufig eine Wahl treffen muss.

Ein Punkt ist mir noch unklar:

ja, das könnte sein. Windows 11 scheint mir eh die schlechtere Alternative zu 
Windows 10 zu sein.
Wie funktioniert das mit Linux Live? Ich würde das gern mal testen.
An der Absenderadresse hab ich übrigens nichts geändert. Keine Ahnung, warum da 
INVALID drangehängt wurde.

Da Microsoft rein zufällig auch mit Office-Software Geld verdient und oft
genug unlautere Methoden zur Durchsetzung eigener Interessen angewendet
hat, kann man sich da manches zusammenreimen.

Hast Du mal probiert, ob das mit Linux auch passiert? Mit einem Live-
System läßt es sich ja ohne Risiko probieren.

BTW: Wie funktioniert das denn, hier eine andere E-Mail-Adresse als
Absender erscheinen zu lassen, also z.B. das INVALID anzuhängen?

Wenn man ein altes Notebook rumliegen hat, warum nicht Linux Mint und
darauf Openoffice installieren? Und vieles andere. Läuft alles so viel
zuverlässiger und schneller als unter Windows.

Ich bin bei meinem Hauptrechner bei Win10 geblieben. Auf dem Laptop mit
Win11 habe ich laufend irgendwelche Schwierigkeiten, allerdings arbeite
ich dort nicht wirklich mit Openoffice, bzw. entwickle dort nichts.

Ansonsten mach eine ganz minimalistische Version, die abstürzt und gib
den Link dazu in die Gruppe mit der Beschreibung, wann das abstürzt.
Dann kann man das auf anderen Versionen nachprüfen.

Warten wir mal die anderen ab, vielleicht hat dort jemand eine bessere Idee.

Hallo,

es könnte sein, dass du große Bilder verwendest, die dann auf
Bildschirmgröße geschrumpft werden und das in großer Anzahl. Dann stürzt
das nicht unbedingt ab, aber braucht vielleicht eine Stunde um das alles
neu zu berechnen. Oder was ähnliches. Die Erfahrung mit den großen
Bildern habe ich auf jeden Fall gemacht.
Auch das automatische Speichern kann Probleme machen, wenn du
gleichzeitig etwas machst.

Ansonsten musst du mal sagen, was du genau als letztes gemacht hast.

This may or may not help, as I am running OpenOffice on a Linux machine; 
however, I did have that same problem. 

First thing for me was to make sure that I had purged my system of any 
competing application (notably, LibreOffice). I am uncertain how to go about 
this on your machine, as I haven't used other systems in a very long time. 

Also, it might not matter so much with a different system. Most Linux systems 
install LibreOffice by default, and moreover keep trying to uninstall 
OpenOffice and to install LibreOffice instead. So that part may or may not 
apply to your situation, but it's worth considering. 

Second is the actual trick that I used to get OpenOffice to run without 
crashing. After trying to start OpenOffice by clicking to open, and by trying 
to open various office documents with OpenOffice, it occurred to me to try a 
plain text document (that is, with the extension .txt). 

I just clicked on the plain text document, and used the "open with" dialog, 
then chose OpenOffice, and bingo! it worked. It's been running without a 
hitch ever since.

Maybe you are waiting too short, and he (computer, system) does not manage
to load everything?
After turning on the computer, wait a few minutes after you think you have
finished charging all drivers, processes, etc.

The response below seems to me to be not very useful for the original
poster.

The way to start a text document is to select File > New > Text Document.
(That's the "File" menu, "New" menu item, and "Text Document" in the
submenu.)

The way to change the margins is to select Format > Page..., and then
select the "Page" tab in the popup window. After making selections in the
popup window, click on OK to have the changes take effect (or Cancel to
have the changes ignored).

Assuming that you have the default toolbars, the font can be changed with
the pulldown list accessed in the second field on the second row. (If you
hover the pointer over the field, you'll see "Font Name".) The font size
can be changed with the next field to the right.

You're supposed to be able to change the font color with a toolbar tool,
but it's not working for me now. Instead, select Format > Character..., and
then select the "Font Effects" tab in the popup window. (The font name,
style, and size can be set on the "Font" tab in that popup window.) After
making selections in the popup window, click on OK to have changes take
effect (or Cancel to have the changes ignored).

Lose your HTML file there, remember that it has the name Index.html.
Choose such a server so that uploading your site from your computer is

And now. Check if your site works.
Remember, however, that your site written in Open Office will be larger
than written in pure HTML.

Welche Meldung ist denn das?

Was machst Du denn?
Falls Du die Freigabe meinst, dann lautet die Antwort "nein".

In letzter Zeit kommt es zu mehr Fragen von Menschen mit MacOS auf ihrem 
Rechner.

Dazu kann ich schreiben, dass die Meldung "... unerwartet beendet" anfangs auch 
nach dem regulären Beenden des Programms durch den user auftauchen kann. Doch 
nach wenigen Malen gibt das Betriebssystem Ruhe. Ich vermute einen Fehler in 
MacOS, da diese Meldung auch nach dem regulären Beenden von Apple-eigener 
Software auftauchen kann.

Did you try unchecking the box? The change should be kept until again 
changed.


Note however that if the box is not checked, files will be saved without 
an extension, which may cause you unexpected problems.

Was ist mit der Auflösung des Monitors? Sind da die korrekten Werte

but maybe because it was all white. My File Manager is dark background.

I have renamed OpenOffice to OpenOffice.old and opened it, and it didn't
crash. I didn't have many settings, so I'm not going to stress over it.
I'll have to find the files I had open, but that's another issue.

Thank you for providing me with information relevant to Open Office. I love
to be able to ask questions and get information from this terrific,
supportive, mail list.

Writing '%AppData%' is meant to be instead of specifying 
'C:\Users\username\AppData'.

I think that 'OO Software > OO ShutUp10' is related to 'O ShutUp10', some 
kind of privacy tool. I think the OpenOffice folder that you're looking for may

Open Office crashes immediately after it loads the pages.
I'm not 100% positive that this is only an Open Office problem. I'm running
Windows 10 and this is Open Office 4.1.13.

My desktop computer was refusing to load the Start menu, so I rebooted it.
It froze and didn't do anything for about 45 minutes. I hit the power
button and restarted it again. It restarted and ran updates. My friends
advised me to run a check and fix program. SFC whic is System File Checker
> sfc /scannow. It came up with a list of things that were wrong, but it
said it fixed everything. Then, when I tried to start Open Office, it
loaded fine and opened the pages and then crashed! It's done it over and
over.

I've heard two possiblities. One is a hardware problem, but the computer
seems fine and is running on an SSD.

The other is resetting the Open Office User profile. I had problems with
that. I don't think my computer matches the description in the directions.
Or maybe I just can't see it. (I'm a little bit visually impaired.) I
couldn't make this work:

Isn't AppData the same in >  This PC > Local Disk(C:) > Users > MyUser >

updates, too.


rename folder %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 (windows)

If this solves the crashes, would you mind to zip and send me the 
profile?


I have a theory why this happens, but it would help to have

I don't know if you received any reply, I haven't seen any on the list. 
To clarify, I have one question: Do you by any chance use Base as well, 
i.e. do you have a database open when working on the other documents? If 
so, you need to make sure that changes to the database (e.g. forms or 
fields changes) are being saved, else this may lead to a tremendous lag. 
Saving the database is different from changing changes to the contents 
of a field. You have to go to the general database window and choose 
save from the menu (or click on the save icon).
Beyond that, I have not experienced such issues, but I am using Linux 
and not Windows.
In any case: if there is malware involved, it hasn't come from 
OpenOffice, at least not from the package, if you installed it from the 
official website. There are many ways malware can become active on your 
PC, mostly it's via an email, but it can also be via a document (macros) 
etc.. If Malware causes the problems, it's most likely not helpful to 
reinstall OpenOffice, but you should then use a good virus and malware 
scanner to identify and remove it.

Das kann nicht helfen, denn höchstwahrscheinlich ist das
OpenOffice-Profil defekt.

Versuchen Sie mal es einfach umzubenennen (OpenOffice muss dafür
natürlich komplett beendet sein).

Wenn Sie dabei Hilfe brauchen gerne nochmal hier melden, ich habe gerade
keine Zeit die Details herauszusuchen.

if I should download the 4.1.14?   When you say to   'quit' open office, the 
only option close to that would be to delete.  I'm afraid to delete it, as I 
have journals on my computer back 35 years, and they are all in .odt format.  
When I open windows explorer, I did not see the folders app to 'view hidden 
folders' but I did "view hidden items".  If you advise me to install Apache 
Open Office 4.1.14, should I uninstall 4.1.6 first?  
I've been typing from a handwritten journal 1983-87--and yesterday I retyped 7 
pages that were lost from the last two days, and right after I saved it, I 
tried to open it, and the only one by that name that would open was missing a 
whole month of 7 typed pages.  In an effort to open it, I now have 6  folders 
of the same name in 'recent files' and they all tell me 'The requested 
operation requires elevation."  
I have been unable to find my user information.  but maybe if I have the later 
edition it would work.  Again, thank you so much--I've really made a mess of 
things in my new computer, and need a lesson on organizing.  I'm having trouble 
seeing what is on the C drive and what is on my flash drive--I'd like to move 
all the flash drive docs over..

photorec aus der Programmsammlung "Testdisk" kann das - nicht nur in der 
Theorie. 



Allerdings, und das sage ich aus eigener Erfahrung, ist eine Datenrettung 
damit nicht unbedingt simpel. Und vor allem nicht in nur 2, 3 Minuten gemacht.
Wenn Du noch nicht damit gearbeitet hast steht Dir einiges an Arbeit bevor.

Der bessere Weg für die Zukunft? Immer ein, bessere mehrere bewußt angelegte 
Backups seiner Arbeitsdaten griffbereit haben.

Wenn Du die mailing-Liste abonniert hast, bekommst Du automatisch alle

Gar nicht, es sei denn, dass Du regelmäßig ein externes Backup Deines Systems 
anfertigen lässt.
Wenn Du eine SSD als Festplatte hast, wird der freigegebene Bereich nach dem 
"Löschen" in aller Regel nicht direkt wieder überschrieben. Diverse Programme 
bieten einem die Chance, wenigstens Teile von gelöschten Dateien zu finden und 
weiterzunutzen.

Ich versuchte, eine neue Version zu installieren. Das klappte aber nicht.
Firefox 108.0.1 (64-Bit) Windows 10
Wenn mein Open Office Writer speichert, wenn beim Video auf Firefox das Bild 
stehen bleibt, dann sind in der gespeicherten Datei nur Doppelkreuze zu sehen. 
Bei den 1. beiden mal merkte ich, das Videobild auf Firefox steht, nur der Ton 
läuft weiter, also noch schnell speichern, bevor der PC ganz abstürzt. Das war 
mein Fehler. Statt des Textes nur noch Doppelkreuze. Nur in einem Zeichensatz 
kamen andere Zeichen. Wie kann ich meine Dateien retten? Beim 3. Mal speicherte 
Open Office Writer schon, als das Firefox-Video-Bild stehen blieb. Da konnte 
ich nichts mehr gegen das Pech tun. Aber ich hatte vorher "Sicherungskopie 
immer erstellen" angekreuzt. Das kontrollierte ich nach dem Absturz. Aber 
wie+wo finde ich diese Sicherungskopie? Kann ich auch die vorletzte Speicherung 
aus den gelöschten Dateien wiederherstellen? Wie?
Mehrfach nach dem Absturz (aber nicht nach allen Abstürzen) hat Open Office 
seine Einstellungen vergessen, auch die zum Speichern und zuletzt geöffneten 
Dateien. Darüber habe ich mich sehr gewundert, wie das passieren kann. Kann ich 
das ändern?

Mein Open Office Writer stürzt sehr oft ab. Oft stürzt er sofort nach dem Start 
ab, ohne daß ich damit arbeitete. Wie kann ich das ändern?

Deine Beschreibung passt auf einen überforderten oder auf einen defekten 
Rechner. Ob das eine oder andere tatsächlich stimmt, kann ich nicht beurteilen.

Sicherungskopien werden in der Regel im Benutzerverzeichnis von OpenOffice 
abgelegt. Es wird immer nur die letzte Version gespeichert. Falls Du zukünftig 
auf ältere Versionen einer bearbeiteten Datei zugreifen möchtest, solltest Du

Dies deutet auf ein defektes Benutzerverzeichnis. Dieses kannst Du gefahrlos 
umbenennen. Wenn OpenOffice es dadurch nicht mehr finden kann, wird ein neues 
angelegt.
Durch das Umbenennen des "alten" Verzeichnisses bleiben alle darin 
gespeicherten Dateien zugänglich, also auch Deine backups, die Du durch 
Doppelklick öffnen kannst.

Oh, and here's how you might have achieved this. Did your extra 
couple of words perhaps start with a capital "A"? Your typing finger 
may have slipped slightly, so that instead of Shift+A you actually 
typed Ctrl+A (easily done). This is the keyboard shortcut for Select 
All (otherwise Edit | Select All), and this would have selected all 
the existing material before immediately replacing it with what you 
continued to type.

What almost certainly happened is that you somehow managed to select 
(highlight) all of the existing text before you looked down to type 
the extra words. If you have any part of your text selected when you 
type, what you type simply replaces the selected material - in this 
case, all of your text. That is not a bug, but instead the way all 
such applications work.

There is a simple way: just use Edit | Undo: Typing (or Ctrl+Z) to 
undo those two words and recover your previous text. But it may be 
too late to do this if you have performed other actions in your 
attempt to recover the earlier material. If you had typed more than a 
couple of words you might want to copy that first, before undoing the 
typing, so that you could then paste the additional text back where 
it should have been.

No - at least, not as simple a bug as your description would suggest!

"Schleife"? Du klickst also eine der drei Möglichkeiten an und dann bekommst Du 
dieselbe Meldung erneut?
Übrigens ist diese Meldung eine vom Betriebssystem und nicht von OpenOffice. 
Also hat macOS ein Problem erkannt.

Da wir nicht wissen, was Du tatsächlich im System verändert hast, können wir 
auch keine konkreten Detail-Hinweise geben.

Hast Du schon mal probiert, das Backup aus Time Machine zu nutzen um den alten 
Zustand wieder herzustellen? Wenn nicht, dann würde ich dies als erste Maßnahme 
probieren. Dies funktioniert - so viel ich weiß - nur Ordner für Ordner.

Da Du ja den Migrationsassistenten nutzen konntest, würde ich, wenn die 
vorherige Empfehlung nicht realisierbar wäre, diesen Vorgang wiederholen, damit 
Du wieder zu einem funktionierenden System kommst.

Close Apache OpenOffice, open your file manager and browse for the
folder where your file is stored. In that same folder check for a file
that looks like .~lock..xxx# where .xxx is the same as the name
of your file eg. a filename test.odt would have a "lock" file  named
.~lock.test.odt# Delete that lock file, then open your file again and
the file should no longer be locked.

it may also be that that your logon name (hence ownership of the files) has 
changed with various changes of Windows versions over the years.  A solution 
may be to allow the file to open in read-only (i.e. locked for editing) format, 
and Ctrl A, Ctrl C into a new document.

I had that problem after I updated Open Office. I had to disable Avast
Ransomeware Shield to get documents unlocked. All other Avast and McAfee
protections stayed in place.

Had the same issue with the last two updates of OpenOffice on Windows. It 
resolved itself after either starting and closing AOO or after rebooting 
Windows or after doing both, I don’t remember which resolved it.

very closely related program called LibreOffice.

I stumbled across a solution by pure luck. When I would double click on the 
OpenOffice app icon, it would throw this error message. I right clicked and 
then clicked “open” and it worked fine. I closed out and doubled clicked the 
icon and then it worked that way too. Thanks for the responses, this will be 
helpful with other software.

Ich kenne die Bedienung von Kapersky nicht, es muss aber die Möglichkeit
geben, ihm "grünes Licht" zu geben und OpenOffice zu vertrauen.

Sam,

As previously stated to fix: highlight the problematic cell(s) and choose 
Format/Cells/Borders and set borders to what you want them to be.

This happens if you Copy (or Cut) and Paste. This action will pickup all 
formatting and paste it into the target cell(s). To prevent this from happening 
Copy (or Cut) and Paste Special, this allows you to decide what you actually 
paste into the target cell(s).

Did you download the update from the Windows Store or from 
https://www.openoffice.org/download/ ? When I ran the installer from the 
official website it did unpin OpenOffice from the taskbar when it removed the 
older version but when I pinned the new icon it placed the regular OO icon on 
the taskbar.

do you have a shortcut on the Desktop with the Seagulls logo (round blue icon 
with 2 white flying forms)?
If so you can pin that shortcut to the taskbar. It will show the Seagulls (at 
least at my Desktop)

Otherwise you might try to create a new shortcut on the Desktop and then change 
the icon
to the Seagulls logo.

The default full installation at my machine did indeed make a white rectangular 
icon on my Desktop. I changed it to the Seagulls logo and now all is well :-)

Note that you cannot install ANY classic Windows app on Windows 11 in S
mode!

Apache OpenOffice is available in the Microsoft Store but it will not be

If you want to do a complete "reset" you need to reset the profile, too.

The profile is not touched during install if it is existing and contains 
all sorts of configurations. Tutorial for Windows 10 at [1]


Then go to [2] and download the installer. Make sure you select 
Protugese Language.

Because of lack of development manpower there is at present no 64 bit 
OpenOffice for Windows.  However, 32 bit OpenOffice will run OK on 64 bit 
Windows.  Note that, if the installed OpenOffice requires Java, one must 
download and install a 32 bit Java, which will run alongside any installed 64 
bit Java.  Then the installed 32 bit Java must explicitly be selected (one time 
only) in OpenOffice /Tools /Options /OpenOffice : Java
