According to Apache's System Requirements page for OpenOffice, yes 4.1.9
can be used on Windows.
https://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/sys_reqs_aoo41.html

You may upgrade to the latest version if you wish.

Strongly recommend check the specs of your laptop vs Windows 10 system
requirements. Personally I wouldn't use Windows 10 on anything less than an
i3, with SSD and 8GB RAM.

Re: Windows 10 version 1903

2020-01-20 Thread Peter Kovacs
Hi,

I am not able to find any issues to 1903 related to OpenOffice.
Can you please link them in a new topic?
I would like to check if we need to fix something.

What I could find out 1903 is a functional update and not a security one.

However Sally will not have to fear much. Your files are independant objects
in your computer. They should not be affected. But to be on the save side do a
copy of all important work.
I am not a windows user. I have Not an overview what you can do to prefent the
loss of your work.

What works if you have an internet connection is to use Google drive or dropbox
to store them at some service.

What works if you have a SD card drive in your laptop is to copy your work onto
the SD card and Therefor secure it from the update.
There are also CD burners that can write to a CD.

If you provide more information what computer you use maybe I can provide more
details.

There are also software products helping you in general to create safety copies
of your files.
If OpenOffice makes trouble then report here. We will help you as much as we
can.

Re: Windows 10 version 1903

2020-01-19 Thread Alan B
Hi Sandy,

I have Windows 10 v 1903 with LibreOffice. Not the same as Open Office, I
know, but both come from the same code.

LibreOffice works fine on my pc and has been on it since it was Windows 7.
I has continued to function through all upgrades... Windows 7 --> Windows
10 (whatever the earliest release was) --> all the other Windows 10
upgrades through and including Windows 10 v 1903.

I've also done some searching to see if there are issues with Open Office
on Windows 1903. It seems some people are having issues with Open Office on
Windows 1903. Whether that happens to you will only be known if you try the
upgrade.

If you try the upgrade and have problems then there are two solutions I've
seen. Upgrade to the latest version of Open Office which people report
sometimes resolves the problem. The other option is install LibreOffice
which doesn't seem to be experiencing the problem and is reported to work
without issue.

I hope this information is helpful and is enough for you to decide what you
want to try next.

I encourage you to update Windows. It is the most widely used pc operating
system in the world and because of that the most widely attacked. Not
updating it leaves it vulnerable to attacks.

Download from the official site - https://www.openoffice.org/

Look for "I want to download Apache OpenOffice" and click on it to get to
the download links. Click on "Download the full installation".

Version 4.1.6 is Windows 10 compatible.

It will pick up your historic documents.

I suspect that if you use a non-Microsoft email and browser, you will
be able to open documents received in your choice of application.

It has nothing to do with the email or browser your always able to open
each file with whatever program you prefer

just select Open with... from the pull down menu in Windows Explorer.

If you want your selection as default select Always use this app to
open .??? files

Also, you might delete MSWord if you never use it, but first make sure
that OO will open all files that Word will.

put onto my computer without me being aware of it. I later found
that the Options I had previously set for languages, which was
English (Australian) had been changed to English (USA).

If you needed to set your OpenOffice language to "English
(Australia)", it may be that your original Windows installation was
incorrectly set to Microsoft's default US locale and language. If you
had configured Windows to Australian settings, these may have instead
been inherited automatically by OpenOffice. When Windows 10 was
installed, one of the first things that should have been done - if
this didn't happen automatically - was to ensure that the regional
and language settings in Windows itself were again set appropriately.

I'm surprised that upgrading Windows should change your OpenOffice
options, but perhaps - since you say this was done without your
knowledge - you will not know whether a fresh installation of
OpenOffice was made or whether your OpenOffice profile was
unhelpfully deleted by whoever did the job in your absence. You can
easily reset the language options, of course - exactly as you
describe. But the best way is to get the Windows settings right first.

This changed formatting such as dates in all my OpenOffice Calc
files. When I reset the formatting in the Options all the dates
became corrupted and ended up being shown as a four year and one day
difference in everything. The only thing I could do then, apart from
going through all the settings for OpenOffice in the Options in case
anything else had been changed, was to start new files for
everything I was currently wanting to use from the date I found the
errors. The old files I have retained are of very little use to me now.

You are right to say that you should have been able to attend to this
- very easily, I hope - in the OpenOffice options. Dates are stored
as the number of days from a date origin. There are three choices for
this origin - for consistency with other software - and these are
provided at Tools | Options... | OpenOffice Calc | Calculate | Date.
(The one-day difference between one pair is to cope with Microsoft's
erroneous belief, built into Microsoft Excel and itself inherited
from Lotus 1-2-3, that 1900 was a leap year and that 29 February 1900
existed. It didn't.) One pair of these options differs by exactly
four years and one day, so resetting this to whatever you had
previously used may have solved your problem instantly and without
reconstructing your spreadsheets.

I sympathise with your predicament and don't mean to belittle your
problem. Indeed, these matters are so interdependent on various
settings and software versions that - despite my confident belief - I
do not guarantee what I've suggested.

Lucy Blake -

I upgraded my laptop from Win 8.1 to Win 10 about three months ago, just
after New Years.

I had no issues.

The upgrade went fine.

There is a learning curve from Win 8 to Win 10.

I did back up all my files (not programs, but files) to an external hard
drive as a precaution, but had no file issues.

I recommend that if you do upgrade that you back up all your files to an
external hard drive before proceeding just in case something goes wrong.
Better safe than sorry.

Hallo,

portieren.

Norma, good plan to back up before major work on the pc.

Regarding ...don't want to loose existing files... so long as the Windows
10 install is done as an upgrade and not as a new installation your data
files will not be affected.

Just yesterday I monitored an upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. Only
two programs were affected. They were related to CD burning and authoring,
were reported not compatible during the upgrade, and were programs that
were preinstalled on the pc when it came from the factory.

I expect that AOO will be compatible and will not be affected by the
upgrade. (This is only my expectation and not based on actual experience as
I have not upgraded a Windows 8.1 pc with AOO to Windows 10.)

I suggest doing the upgrade to 4.1.1 whenever most convenient for you
before or after the Windows upgrade process. Since you're already familiar
with Windows 8.1 perhaps before upgrade before so you can do it without
also having to navigate through a new interface.
