Re: Change of background color

2019-10-21 Thread Chuck Spalding
You can change the background color at

OpenOffice > Preferences > OpenOffice (group) > Appearance

(That's the sequence on a Mac. Windows might be different.)

For the "Document background" selection, choose Automatic (above Black in
the list).

To be a bit more clear than the previous response, I believe you want

Format -> Page... -> Page

and then set the page margins.

The Borders settings define a line border around the text area defined by
the margins.

Re: [AOO-Templates]

2020-01-29 Thread Chuck Spalding
Alan,

Your guidance sort of works for me (OO 4.1.7 on Mac OS 10.12.6). If I do
not have any document open, the menu selection *File > From Template...*
works as expected. But if I have any document open (Writer or Calc), the
selection *File > New > Templates and Documents* does nothing—the *Templates
and Documents* dialog does *not* open as claimed in the documentation.

I can't resist mentioning that it's not obvious that one should look at
documentation for version 3.3 when using version 4.1. Also, it's
"interesting" that the *What's New* section of the documentation page
 contains only two items
from 2013. (Yes, I know it's a volunteer organization.)

The text refers to version "20200*2*01", but the link goes to version "20200

https://sourceforge.net/projects/aoo-extensions/files/17102/51/dict-en-20200201.oxt/download

When I double-click on an OXT file (with OpenOffice 4.1.7 for Mac),
OpenOffice freezes (and has to be forced quit). I eventually got the file
to be read ( a few days ago), but unfortunately I don't remember how I did
that.

Re: Using Open office

2020-02-20 Thread Chuck Spalding
David,

OpenOffice can read/modify/save files in DOC/XLS format. One can even set
preferences to use those formats by default when creating files.

I don't know why, but the OpenOffice community seems to strongly resist the
use of DOC/XLS file formats instead of the "native" ODT/ODS formats.
There's a long posting
 on the
OpenOffice forum about file formats. The claim is made that saving content
as a DOC/XLS file will "almost certainly ... lose content and/or
formatting" (that's stated in bold, red text near the top of the posting).

If that's an issue for your files, then the proposed PDF approach seems to
be the easiest solution.

Personally, I have *many* files in DOC/XLS formats on my Mac, and I use
OpenOffice exclusively. (My reason for using the "foreign" formats is to be
able to use the Quick Look feature to see file contents without actually
opening a file with OpenOffice.) I do not exchange files with others, so I
don't know what compatibility problems there might be, but working in those
"foreign" formats seems to be fine within my system.

Hello,

Please note that "Apache" has the domain name "apache.*ORG*", not "apache.

Regarding how to contact "Apache", have you tried looking at their website?
(When I do a Google search for "apache", the apache.org site is listed at

You could also look at the OpenOffice website

As somebody else wrote earlier, please calm down. You are not being ripped

Re: Microsoft has converted my OpenOffice documents

2020-03-23 Thread Chuck Spalding
They probably did not "change the files". They probably changed which
program will, by default, open files with various file types (e.g., DOC and
XLS).

If that's the case, you need to change the file-to-program associations.
That does not involve any change to the file contents.

I have the "opposite" question: I *want* the behavior the original poster
described.

How do I configure OpenOffice (on a Mac) to use Gmail as the mail
"application"? The method suggested to the OP doesn't seem applicable,
since Gmail is accessed through a browser—that is, the "application" is the
browser.

I tried putting the path to the browser in Preferences > Internet > E-mail

(For the record, I do not have the Apple Mail application configured, since
I never use it.)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: MAC OS - Still cannot eliminate OO icon from Mac desktop when program running

2020-05-26 Thread Chuck Spalding
Dan,

It appears that that you are opening the OpenOffice program from within the
downloaded dmg file (i.e., from the window described below). That file
contains a virtual disk that contains the program and other files. You are
supposed to copy the OpenOffice program from that virtual disk to the
Applications folder on your computer.

The steps for installing OpenOffice on a Mac are as follows:

1. Download the OpenOffice distribution file
Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.7_MacOS_x86-64_install_en-US.dmg.

2. Double click on the icon for the dmg file (i.e., wherever it got
downloaded to), which will (a) mount the virtual disk contained in the dmg
file, which creates an "OpenOffice" icon on the desktop, and (b) display
the virtual disk's contents in a window named "OpenOffice" (which is the
"screen" referenced in the instructions that you quoted).

3. *In that "OpenOffice" window*, drag the "OpenOffice.app" icon to the
"Applications" icon (also in that window—it is an alias for the actual
Applications folder). (You appear to have dragged the "OpenOffice" icon
from the desktop to the Applications folder, which is not the same
thing—different name and different source location.)

4. Close the "OpenOffice" window.

5. Select (single-click) the "OpenOffice" icon on the desktop, and select
File > Eject "OpenOffice". (You could also right click [or hold down
Control and left click] on that icon and select Eject "OpenOffice" from the
menu that is displayed.)

6. Drag the downloaded dmg file to the Trash (or save it somewhere for
[unlikely] future use).

Then, to use OpenOffice, double click on its icon in the Applications
folder.

If you want to avoid having to go to the Applications folder (or the
Launcher?) each time you want to use OpenOffice, you can keep its icon in
the Dock permanently.

I hope this helps,

Chuck

P.S. For the record, I have not looked at the instructions posted on the
OpenOffice website.

Re: MAC OS - Still cannot eliminate OO icon from Mac desktop when program running

2020-05-26 Thread Chuck Spalding
Dan,

I don't know how you did it, but you do not have the OpenOffice
*application* in your Applications folder. (You could [single] click on
that icon and type Cmd-I [File > Get Info]. If I were a betting person, I
would bet the Kind is "Volume", not "Application".) Furthermore, I can't
imagine how clicking on the disk icon would go directly to the application.

You need to remove whatever "OpenOffice" icon you have in the Applications
folder, and start over. After double-clicking on the downloaded dmg file, a
window named "OpenOffice" will open. *Staying totally in that* *window*,
drag the icon "OpenOffice.app" and drop it on top of the "Applications"
icon *in that window*. Then, when you open the Applications folder, you
should see "OpenOffice.app" (with a size of about 400MB), and Get Info will
show it as an Application.

I just thought of another possible source of confusion. You have two
Applications folders that can come into play. One is the "system"
Applications folder (e.g., at the path /Macintosh HD/Applications), and one
is in your "personal" Applications folder (e.g., at the path /Macintosh
HD/Users//Applications). You want the OpenOffice app to be in
the "system" folder. However, regardless of which Applications folder
contains the "mystery" file, I don't understand the behavior you describe.

Good luck,

Chuck

Re: Spreadsheet

2022-03-29 Thread Chuck Spalding
Karl,

If I correctly understand your objective, try these steps:

1. Enter the desired multiplier in any cell (e.g., 1.05 for a 5% increase).
2. Select that cell and copy to the clipboard (i.e., Edit > Copy).
3. Select all the cells you want to modify (e.g., click on the first cell
and Shift-Click on the last cell).
4. Select Edit > Paste Special...
5. Click on the "Multiply" selection under "Operations".
6. Make sure "Numbers" is selected in the "Selection" choices, or simply
select "Paste all".
7. Click on "OK".

If you don't like the result, you can select Edit > Undo: Copy to restore
the previous values. (Don't ask me why it's "Undo: *Copy*" when you just
did a *Paste*. ;-)

Note that the "Multiply" selection in the Paste Special dialog is retained,
so you will need to be careful if you next want to use Paste Special for a
different behavior.

Re: open office

2024-02-14 Thread Chuck Spalding
The response below seems to me to be not very useful for the original
poster.

The way to start a text document is to select File > New > Text Document.
(That's the "File" menu, "New" menu item, and "Text Document" in the
submenu.)

The way to change the margins is to select Format > Page..., and then
select the "Page" tab in the popup window. After making selections in the
popup window, click on OK to have the changes take effect (or Cancel to
have the changes ignored).

Assuming that you have the default toolbars, the font can be changed with
the pulldown list accessed in the second field on the second row. (If you
hover the pointer over the field, you'll see "Font Name".) The font size
can be changed with the next field to the right.

You're supposed to be able to change the font color with a toolbar tool,
but it's not working for me now. Instead, select Format > Character..., and
then select the "Font Effects" tab in the popup window. (The font name,
style, and size can be set on the "Font" tab in that popup window.) After
making selections in the popup window, click on OK to have changes take
effect (or Cancel to have the changes ignored).

This website might be helpful: https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/ . A
previous response provided a link to user manuals.

Good luck,

Chuck
