  So just to clarify some of the issues you mentioned;

Hosted engine wasn't designed for a 'single node' use case, as we do

elsewhere or even on the same server if no better alternative.

I hope you will keep this configuration in your design space as you move
 forward.
As you can see it is likely to be a popular one. At a previous employer,
everybody in our development group had a single (powerful) machine
running VMware vSphere, with a hosted vCenter, to use as a development
 VM testbed.

It's likely to be popular for people with few resources who want to run
 in a fully supported configuration.

HA is great, but not every environment has the resources/requirement to
support it. oVirt has a lot to offer even a leaner environment and I
hope those environments continue to get attention as the product
matures. For example, I hope there is a reasonable story around upgrades
to future releases for single-node hosted configurations.

Having said that, it is possible to set global maintenance mode
as a first step (in the UI: right click engine vm and choose
  ha-maintenance).
Then you can ssh into the engine vm and init 0.

What is the recipe for a clean startup after shutdown?
Can we do 'hosted-engine --vm-start' while the system is in Global
 Maintenance mode?

 Thanks,
  Bob

Hi Bob,
If all you need is a way to run VMs, then Kimchi[1] from the oVirt
eco-system can be a better solution, as it's designed for a single-node
use case. If you wish to run ovirt in a vm you can run a VM with Kimchi
and install the engine inside. Also, coming on 3.5 is the ovirt appliance[2]
which will simplify it.

If I'm missing something please share your thoughts.

As for clean start after maintenance, I'd expect hosted-engine
--set-maintenance=none
will allow the agent to start the VM automatically. If this is not the
case please let us know.

Thanks,
Doron

Well I don't think Kimchi is a solution
to the problem Bob mentioned.

What you want (and what you get at Vmware btw)
is _one_ solution to start on a single node (laptop or server, whatever)
and which is able to scale to manage 100 Hosts or a complete data
center.

I doubt kimchi can do this.
oVirt could be tweaked to do this.

Other thoughts?

 Yes the host is up.
 Please see below

seems that the engine try to send null in the parameters to vdsm,
unfortunately your version (3.4) has a bug that cause the parameters not to be
printed,
so i can't guess exactly what is null (fixed in
http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/25713/ )

the only thing i can advise is to start looking for the error:
first, select the cluster in the clusters tab, make sure in the sub tab you see
a valid 'Cluster CPU Type' (should be the name of your hosts processor)
and 'Emulated Machine' (should be 'rhel6.4.0' or 'pc-1.0')

if so, is regular run (not run once) works?

can you try maybe trying on a new vm? (hopefully something is wrong only with
this vm configuration..)

the only thing left is to look in the db (vm static table) and look for
suspicious null values

Hi Sven,
Referring to Bob's mail, he mentioned people with little resources, and also
a development use case- running VMware vSphere, with a hosted vCenter, to use
as a development VM testbed.
These are valid cases for Kimchi, where all you want to do is simply run a VM.

If you want to be able scale up to 100 hosts or more, you can definitely start
with 2 hosts, which is the hosted engine use case. The reason why I mention it,
is that additional hosts will require proper network and storage configuration,
which basically mean you want to plan ahead even when you begin with a modest
deployment of 2 hosts.

I do not think a single-host use case is technically impossible, but we need
to understand a VM may die, and in a single host setup this may have additional
implications. So why get into troubles instead of planning your way or using
the right tool for the task. Just imagine using a 5.4 Kg hammer to hang a
picture
frame on the wall.

Re: [ovirt-users] Can HA Agent control NFS Mount?

2014-05-27 Thread Sven Kieske
So now I have to ask, what is the purpose of ovirt-all-in-one?

Just for tech demos at events?

I can live with any solution, but I feel it will limit ovirts adoption
and the use-cases should get better documented.

There are still many beginners asking very basic questions on this ML
and I think this shows the lack of a better documentation for the first
steps to take for a working ovirt environment.

Or what do you think?

  Hello,

I'm writing to the list in reference to helping setting up a user group
  in
  China.

As the oVirt community develops rapidly, there is a growing number of
  users
from China who have deployed oVirt, even in their production
  environment.
However, there is hardly voice/feedback from these users.

For better spreading oVirt in China, and to help more Chinese users get
into touch with the whole oVirt community, I am going to help setting
  up
  a
  oVirt user group in China.

Things that the user group might help:
 0. translating articles, discussions, case studies on the oVirt
 website
 1. organizing online(irc, mailing list) and offline discussions
 about
  oVirt
 2. volunteering in test week
 3. bug fixing
 4. developing features related to localization

By the way, when translating articles, should we setup a new individual
website or just do the l10n work on http://www.ovirt.org? If the
  former,
should we keep the look and feel the same with the oVirt website?
  Great! I have some suggestions.

  1. If it is possible, we'd better rent a (virtual/cloud) server inside
China. Sometimes it's very slow to access ovirt.org. Maybe we can also
have a sub-domain name such as cnuser.ovirt.org, and make the outlook of
cnuser the same as oVirt main site.

  2. Considering the content, we can start by translating primary pages
and slides in ovirt.org. I think in China most of the technical people
are able to read English, so it is not necessary to translate all the
pages. We shall then provide new content that is different from the
oVirt main site. For example, successful customer stories, technical
experience sharing, and all the things you mentioned in the mail.

   Yes the host is up.
   Please see below

seems that the engine try to send null in the parameters to vdsm,
unfortunately your version (3.4) has a bug that cause the parameters not
 to
  be printed,
so i can't guess exactly what is null (fixed in
  http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/25713/ )

the only thing i can advise is to start looking for the error:
first, select the cluster in the clusters tab, make sure in the sub tab
 you
see a valid 'Cluster CPU Type' (should be the name of your hosts
 processor)
and 'Emulated Machine' (should be 'rhel6.4.0' or 'pc-1.0')

if so, is regular run (not run once) works?

can you try maybe trying on a new vm? (hopefully something is wrong only
 with
  this vm configuration..)

the only thing left is to look in the db (vm static table) and look for
  suspicious null values

 The table name is vm_static

What does glusterfs does actually? I have heard of it but never really
know its use.

With GlusterFS you can create a NAS out of standard x86 hardware. E.g.
you have 4 nodes with 1TB of local storage each you create a
distributed-replicated GlusterFS-volume which has a size of 2TB, but it
still works fine even if 2 nodes fail.

See gluster.org for more detailed information: http://www.gluster.org/about/

Also PLEASE how do i go ahead and setup ovirt to use the LOCAL STORAGE
of the physical nodes?

Simply put your host into maintenance mode (Host - Maintenance) and
select Configure Local Storage afterwards. You have to specify a
folder which should contain your vm disk images on this host and oVirt
configures the storage domain for you.

Thanks

Sure you can use the Local storage feature.

What's the reason you don't want NFS? IS it because you don't want
to have a dedicated storage or because you want to separate your vm
storages? If it's the dedicated storage you could have a look at
GlusterFS, otherwise you can for sure use the local disks.

Can ovirt do this?
It is ok to have ISO images on the ovirt-engine/management host
but i do
not want NFS or Shared storage when it comes to the hosts in the
infrastructure.

In oVirt 3.4.1 you have to use either NFS or POSIXFS - so there's a
need for a NAS...

Please advice.

Thanks!!!

Any kind of support subscription?

Sure - we can provide a support contract.

[ovirt-users] localdomain

2014-05-27 Thread Koen Vanoppen
Hi Guys,

It's bin a while :-). Luckily :-).

I have a quick question. Is there a way to change the default .localdomain
for the FQDN in ovirt?
I would be handy if we just had to fill in the hostname of our vm (we are
using 3.4, with the cloud-init feature) and he automatically adds our
domain in stead of .localdomain.

Kind regards,

Koen

So now I have to ask, what is the purpose of ovirt-all-in-one?

Just for tech demos at events?

I can live with any solution, but I feel it will limit ovirts adoption
and the use-cases should get better documented.

There are still many beginners asking very basic questions on this ML
and I think this shows the lack of a better documentation for the first
steps to take for a working ovirt environment.

 Or what do you think?

Hi Sven,
All-in-one is classic-style installation (ie- not running in a vm), and indeed
was created for demo's. However it indeed may grow to support additional hosts
in a different DC, as the one it starts with is for local storage. This is why
I was saying that the issue is not technical but requires some understanding
of the admin to where he wants to go.

As for documentation, that's always an issue. Keeping docs updated is an on
going
task and we'd appreciate any assistance we get for it.

I am working through the setup of oVirt node for a 3.4.1 deployment.

I setup some glusterfs volumes/bricks on oVirt Node Hypervisor release 3.0.4
(1.0.201401291204.el6) and created a storage domain. All was working OK
until I rebooted the node and found that the glusterfs configuration had not
been retained.

Is there something I should be doing to persist any glusterfs configuration
so it survives a node reboot?

Many thanks,

Simon

Hi Simon,
it actually sounds like a bug to me, as node are supposed to support
gluster.

Ryan / Fabian- thoughts?

Hey,

I vaguely remember that we were seeing a bug like this some time ago.
We fixed /var/lib/glusterd to be writable (using tmpfs), but it can
actually be that we need to persist those contents.

But Simon, can you give details which configuration files are missing
and why glusterd is not starting?
Is glusterd starting? I'm getting the impression that it's starting, but
that it has no configuration. As far as I know, Gluster keeps most of
the configuration on the brick itself, but it finds brick information in
/var/lib/glusterd.

The last patch simply opened the firewall, and it's entirely possible
that we need to persist this. It may be a good idea to just persist the
entire directory from the get-go, unless we want to try to have a thread
watching /var/lib/glusterd for relevant files, but then we're stuck
trying to keep up with what's happening with gluster itself...

Can we

Thanks

Either way I suggest you take a look in the below link-

[ovirt-users] oVirt 3.4.2 branching

2014-05-27 Thread Sandro Bonazzola
Hi,
we're going to create ovirt-engine-3.4.2 branch tomorrow morning 08:00 UTC in
order to allow 3.4.3 development starting on 3.4 branch while we prepare
for 3.4.2 GA release.
So starting tomorrow morning, if you have patches targeted to 3.4.2 you'll need
to push them on 3.4.2 branch too.
Thanks,

Subject: [ovirt-users] workflow node installation

Hi,

I don't know if I'm doing things wrong but the workflow for node installation
is a bit cumbersome for me.

The things I have to do to get a node up in ovirt engine:

- install node image from pxe
- approve node
- put node into maintenance mode (storage not available)
- Setup Host Networks
- Sync network (otherwise I cannot save the network changes)
- Setup Host Networks again
- Save Network setup
- activate node

This seems problematic to me -- the host networks should be
automatically set when you approve the node joining a given cluster.

Are you setting up the host networks on the engine side, or do you have
to approve, log back into the node, configure networking, etc?

And this I have to do for every node. It could save me some time if I could
setup the networks on approval or engine puts it directly into maintenance
mode without the sync requirement.

Kind regards,

Jorick Astrego

yes I'm on nightly and my cluster level is 3.5 (i set this, but that is also
 causing another issue).

 engine version is 3.5.0-0.0.master.20140519181229.gitc6324d4

Ah, ok. So it's not the bug I was afraid of. It's simply about Vdsm not
reporting the 3.5 clusterLevel yet (as it does not have all of 3.5
feature committed to, or so I thought).

[ovirt-users] engine-setup : Failed to execute stage 'Environment setup'

2014-05-27 Thread Nathanaël Blanchet
Hello,

I deleted ovirt_engine_reports* database from postgres because I didn't want
anymore to use dwh after testing it. Now when I run engine-setup for upgrading
or configuring, I always get this error and I can't successfully end the setup
:
[ ERROR ] Failed to execute stage 'Environment setup': Cannot connect to
Reports database using existing credentials:
ovirt_engine_reports_20140527180625@localhost:54 32

What can I do for running engine-config?

Backup and remove /etc/ovirt-engine-reports/ovirt-engine-reports.conf.d/10*

And try again.

You probably need to remove /var/lib/ovirt-engine-reports/build-conf as well.
