Re: [ovirt-users] Upgrading oVirt-Node-NG from 4.0.3 to 4.0.6

2017-02-13 Thread Fabian Deutsch
Hey Thomas,

you should be able to run yum update on Node to get it updated to the
latest version.

If this fails, then you can still download the rpm from jenkins (will
need to dig out the url) and the manually yum install the rpm to
update node.

Yes - nmtui or nmcli are the tools you can use here to get your host

Yes, true that you need to do manual partitioning when choosing to use a RAID.

For manual partitioning there are a few constraints which we did not
document yet - patches are welcome!

The constraints are:

- Use thin LVM
- /boot on a separate partition
- /var on a separate LV
- / on a thin LV

This should allow you to perform the installation - If I do not miss anything

This is the URL yuo want - It contains the builds based on the latest
stable release.

Tho I see that it wasn't updated lately.
Sandro, can we publish a new ISO for 4.0.3?

In the mean time you can take the iso from

Nice that the status issue could be solved.

For adding Node, you can either add the host by gpoing to Engine and then
add the host, or you can use vdsm register on the host to register it to
Engine.

Hey Anantha,

please use the latest iso from:
http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/ovirt-3.6-snapshot/iso/ovirt-node-ng-installer-ovirt/

http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/ovirt-3.6-snapshot/iso/ovirt-node-iso/
is our vintage image, and it has known problems with some storage
setups.

Let me know if ovirt-node-ng-installer-ovirtworks for yuo.

[ovirt-users] [ANN] oVirt Node Next Beta

2016-04-27 Thread Fabian Deutsch
Hey,

the just released oVirt 3.6.6rc1 release marks the first official oVirt release
which is accompanied by oVirt Node Next (Beta).

Since it's pre-alpha release a few weeks ago, Node has seen a lot of testing
and fixes, which brought it to the beta level.

If you have not yet started to test oVirt Node Next, this is the time to do so.
Take a look at the quick-start guide to see the next steps [0].

What is oVirt Node?
oVirt Node is a ready-to-use OS image, containing all the OS and oVirt packages
needed to act as host for oVirt Engine.
The image can be installed in minutes, can be administered using Cockpit [1],
and provides a safe upgrade and rollback mechanism.

Where can I learn more about oVirt Node?
A quick-start guide, and links to additional documentation can be found on the
oVirt Node Project page .

I am not sure if you want to uninstall/remove a node - then you need
to clear the storage - or if you want to reset it - in this case I'd
recommend to reinstall.

This is by design. The idea is that you use the TUI to configure the
initial NIC, all subsequent configuration will be done trough Engine.

This is a valid point - you can not configure Ndoe from the TUI to
connect to more than two networks.

What you can do however is to temporarily setup a route between the
two networks to bootstrap Node. After setup you can use Engine to
configure another nic on Node to access the storage network.

The other option I see is to drop to shell and manually configure the
second NIC by creating an ifcfg file.

Note: In future we plan that you can use Cockpit to configure
networking - this will also allow you to configure multiple NICs.

Hey Christoph,

first thanks for the report.

As Ryan wrote, you need to drop to shell, then all logs are in /var/log.

The problem seems to be an old code fragment which assumes sysV init scripts.
I wonder why we did not encounter it earlier.

Could you file a bug about this issue?

Hey Timothy,

oVirt Node 3.6 is now silently released continuously.
See http://www.ovirt.org/Node for links to the right Jenkins job for

Hey Kevin.

In the last months we went over to only release oVirt Node through Jenkins [3].

The main reasons is that the Node team was focused on stabilizing
Node, instead of improving the release process.

For the old isos in [1] - We should probably remove them and point to
the continous builds.

I've also updated the links on the main Node landing page:

Ah yes, both builds were quite old.

If you want to give it another try, I'd suggest you try out some
builds which are not older than a week, they should be working much
better.

You mean, it should default to the i.e. jenkins url?

Our experience was that it was quite unreliable to pull ~3GB of data
from the internet, thus we recommend to download the OVA and host it
manually.

The strat-up can then fail, because sudo requires a ty, but this isn't

That's a nice idea and we actually actively investigated to use Atomic Host.
Atomic is pretty strong on quickly building and deploying trees. It
also provides the nice features to rollback in case of accidents, and
also has a vibrant community.
But we encountered a few issues i.e. Atomic has tough requirements on
how the root filesystem must look, and how packages can touch/change
the root file-system. Besides that we were seeing issues when it comes
to support a wider range of (multipathed) storage hardware. To just
name two issues.

So for now we don't aim to build Node an the foundations of Atomic.

But we are working on an approach which is similar to Atomic and
allows us to address some long standing issues and make Node much
easier to use, maintain, and customize.

Stay tuned for news on the Node development road-map.

Actually a good point which I also had on my mind.
The main focus of Node will be to host VMs, but having basic container
support to host containers for supporting a feature is surely
something interesting.

> *) add Open vSwitch direct support (not Neutron-mediated); there are related

This will need work on the vdsm side before it makes sense to pull
this into Node.

> hear that Cockpit is coming, so why not Kimchi too? ;)

Yep, Cockpit will be part of the game on Node.
Kimchi might be problematic - not because of Node - but because of the
way how libvirtd is tuned towards vdsm.
The last time I looked the issue was that libvirtd is not consumable
by kimchi anymore, once vdsm has configured it.
And to me it looks like this does not really fit anyway right now,
because the current assumption is that Engine has the full control
over VMs - and this would be not true anymore if you could use kimchi
to administer your VMs.

Hey Kyle,

on the Node TUI you can only configure one NIC.
Any additional configuration must be done through Engine.

  Hey Patrick,

currently we are not publishing official isos to resources.ovirt.org,
  instead please
use the ISOs build in our CI:

Out of curiosity, why is still not 'official' ?

The final bit to do the publishing is just not yet in place.
That final bit will take the ISOs from our CI and publish them, whenever an
oVirt update is happening.

But in the end, the isos from the CI and the officially released ones, will be
from the same build process.

Re: [ovirt-users] ovirt-Node + hosted engine question

2015-07-14 Thread Fabian Deutsch
- Original Message -
 Hi All.

As I was perusing my e-mails from this list earlier today one that
caught my attention was one that had to do with ovirt-node and hosted
engine. It appeared as though it is possible to install hosted engine
 on a ovirt-node host, and indeed, when I installed ovirt-node into a
VirtualBox VM to poke around, there is a hosted engine option in the
menu where you can enter a URL for an ISO/pxe source for OS installtion.

Hey,

I just want to clarify the following questions:

1.) Is it possible to install ovirt-node, and then install a hosted
 engine?

Yes.

2.) If the answer to 1.) is Yes, does it require some sort of
NFS-enabled storage, or can you confgiure local storage on ovirt-node
and install the engine to there?

Currently you can install hosted-engine on eitehr NFS or iSCSI storage

3.) Is it possible to create NFS-enabled storage on ovirt-node?

No.
Maybe you technically can, but I can just strongly discourage to do that.

4.) Can you install the hosted engine onto external NFS storage, then
move/migrate it to local storage on ovirt-node?

I strongly believe not.

I am thinking of a lab situation where there is only one server, but
gobs of RAM and storage. Running ovirt-node as the host would require
fewer space resources (not that I would necessarily be hurting for
space, but any extra I could squeeze out would not be unwelcome).

Maybe this will work in future, when we can also configure some storage
server on Node. But for now that is not supported.

  Which one of these ?
Moreover, reading Fabian statements about bonding limits, today I
  can try
to switch to a config without bonding.

 vm is a complicated term.

`brctl show` would not show you a vm connected to a bridge. When
 you
WOULD see is a vnet888 tap device. The other side of this device is
held by qemu, which implement the VM.

Ok, understood and found it, vnet2

I'm asking if the dhcp offer has reached that tap device.

No, the DHCP offer packet do not reach the vnet2 interface, I can see
only DHCP DISCOVER.

Ok, so it seems that we have a problem in the host bridging.

Is it the latest kernel-3.10.0-229.7.2.el7.x86_64 ?

Michael, a DHCP DISCOVER is sent out of a just-booted guest, and OFFER
returns to the bridge, but is not propagated to the tap device.
Can you suggest how to debug this further?

Dump packets including the ethernet headers.
Likely something interfered with them so the eth address is wrong.

Since bonding does this sometimes, this is the most likely culprit.

We've ruled this out already - Roberto reproduces the issue without a
 bond.

To me this looks like either a regression in the host side bridging. But otoh
it doesn't look
like it's happening always, because otherwise I'd expect more noise around this
issue.

Thanks for answering, my considerations below.

…

We also removed all firewall rules, checked iPXE and I also saw the
  requests
going out, but no replies getting to the VM.
But here it sounds like it isn't specific to bonds.
After all I did not find the solution yet.

In our config, I can see the DHCP offer until the hypervisor bridge interface
 toward vm

Just to make sure, is your setup:

NIC -- bridge -- VM?

Or is a bond involved?

It is probably a good idea to install the oS with a static IP, and then
switch to dhcp to then use tcpdump inside the vm to see what is reaching
  the inside.

Already done. Vm do not acquire the IP address and, on the vm side, tcpdump
 shows only requests.
At the same time, the DHCP offer s detected on the bridge if of the
 hypervisor.

With static IP, vm works fine.

Yes, it only seems to be around dhcp.

If you don't have a bond involved, then please reopen the bug abaove, and we
try to find
someone to look at it.

2015-07-03 Thread Fabian Deutsch
- Original Message -
 Hi Dan, guys

Sorry for very late follow-up, but we had a lot of other topics to fix just
before to go back on this one.

We have tried another approach just to check if the kernel of the vdsm iso
image used to install the host could create the problem I've reported to the
 list.

Now we have reinstalled the same hardware with latest CentOS 7.1, fully
 updated.
Installed vdsm, then joined the oVirt cluster.

Well, we are observing the same behavior as before.
No DHCP offer is reaching the booting VM, and:

brctl showmacs bridge_if show us the booting vm mac-address
tcpdump -I bridge_if show us the dhcp offer coming from dhcp server.

We have also tried to remove ANY firewall rule.

It isn't a PXE issue (gPXE 0.9.7) but only a DHCP process issue. Infact, if
we install a vm manually and assign a static IP, it works fine.
If we switch to dhcp, the vm don't get the dynamic one.
In this case, tcpdump on vm shows only the DHCP discovery, not the DHCP
 offer.

 Any further suggestion/hint ?

I've observed this behavior in bug

with direct LUNS, trim commands are not supported despite having the LVM
config in the VMs set up to allow it.

Hey,

IIUIC you try to get discard working for VMs? That means that if fstrim is
used inside the VM, that it is getting passed down?

The command line needed for qemu to support discards is:

$ qemu … -drive if=virtio,cache=unsafe,discard,file=disk …

I'm not sure which qemu disk drivers/busses support this, but at least virtio
does so.
I'm using it for development.

You could try a vdsm hook to modify the qemu command which is called when the
VM is spawned.

Let me know if you can come up with a hook to realize this!

 Hi Fabian,

 I use Node version 3.5 - 0.999.201504280933.el6. I cannot use an el7 version
now because our nodes are on HP servers and we need the cciss module.

There are a few things we can try:
0. Please provide ps axZ from the running node with the failed libvirtd
(attach or paste or send to me in private)
This will help me to see if it's the issue we saw before.
1. The ovirt-node version that is used in your build - to find out if our fix
is in
2. Try a Node build from today, which should have the fix

 Hi Fabian,

I finally succeed to build an image with the two plugins. I needed to use two
edit-node commands to incorporate the plugins in the ISO.

Hey Kevin,

great that this worked for you.

Tho I wonder why edit-node did not take several plugins at once, it should.

And those RPM will be available on http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/

Tolik,

those are great news! Finally we have regular ovirt-node builds again,
that means stable ovirt-node-iso buidls are in sight!

Re: [ovirt-users] Hosted Engine on oVirt Node Hypervisor

2015-03-25 Thread Fabian Deutsch
Hey Jason,

- Original Message -
I'm setting up some new oVirt infrastructure, and wanted to give hosted
engine a try. I downloaded and installed the oVirt Node Hypervisor ISO
(3.5-0.999.201502231653.el7.centos) on one of 3 nodes. One of the
options in the hypervisor menu is Hosted Engine. This requires an
Engine ISO/OVA URL for download. The thing is - as far as I can tell,
there is no download link for this ISO/OVA on the ovirt release web
site. I also can't find anything in the documentation that refers to it
(or even this menu in the hypervisor). I did find this after some searching:

Yes, you are right, the documentation of Hosted Engine is currently ... sparse.

 http://jenkins.ovirt.org/user/fabiand/my-views/view/Node/job/ovirt-appliance_engine-3.5_master_merged/oVirt-Engine-Appliance-CentOS-x86_64-7-20150319.424.ova

(Now replaced with a build from 0322). I asked on the ovirt IRC channel
and was told that this might work, but because of new functionality
introduced recently that it also might not. If the feature is available
in the node ISO, shouldn't there be an appropriate release of the hosted
engine ISO/OVA that works hand in hand with the node that I've
downloaded? If it's not there because it isn't ready, isn't this
functionality something that should be added to maybe a beta node
release and tested before being released into the stable node hypervisor
 release?

Yes, the problem here is with the ovirt-appliance.
We did not start building images based on the 3.5 status of the appliance.

I'll see if we can get up a builder for the ovirt-3.5 branch up quickly.

I asked on the IRC channel whether it might be possible for me to
kickstart my own engine from the node. I ran into trouble with that as
well. On the installed node, I can only configure one network
interface. This is, of course, intended to enable ovirtmgmt for
communication with engine which would take over and configure everything
else for you. Of course, when you don't yet have engine installed and
need to get it, this leads to a chicken and egg problem. To kickstart
engine on node, I need an IP (from mgmt), an image (I guess it could
come from the mgmt network), but then I also need access to the external
network (on another NIC) to be able to install the appropriate ovirt yum
repository, and download the engine! If I installed my own node
manually instead if using ISO, I guess I could configure the network,
and make it work, but I'm trying to take advantage of the work that has
already been put into node to make this all possible.

I believe I saw a corresponding bug for what you described above.

Does it help if you temporarily add a route to your management network's
router, which enables the hosted-engine host to access the relevant networks
(external, storage, …)?

Greetings
fabian

Anyway, I'm certainly interested in any feedback from users who have
been able to make this work. I guess I could kickstart one node as an
engine, create the virtual image there, suck the ova down to the mgmt
server, install node, then use node to re-suck down the hosted engine
image, but it just seems like a lot of extra work. Somehow I think it's
intended to be a little more straightforward than that.

 Jason.

   Hello,
   on my all-in-one installation @home I had 3.5.0 with F20.
   Today I updated to 3.5.1.

it seems it modified /etc/multipath.conf preventing me from using my
   second
   disk at all...

My system has internal ssd disk (sda) for OS and one local storage domain
and another disk (sdb) with some partitions (on one of them there is also
   another local storage domain).

At reboot I was put in emergency boot because partitions at sdb disk
   could
not be mounted (they were busy).
it took me some time to understand that the problem was due to sdb gone
managed as multipath device and so busy for partitions to be mounted.

Here you can find how multipath became after update and reboot
   https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mvS0FkMnNyMTdVTms/view?usp=sharing

   No device-mapper-multipath update in yum.log

Also it seems that after changing it, it was then reverted at boot again
   (I
don't know if the responsible was initrd/dracut or vdsmd) so in the mean
time the only thing I could do was to make the file immutable with

   chattr +i /etc/multipath.conf

The supported method of achieving this is to place # RHEV PRIVATE in
the second line of your hand-modified multipath.conf

I do not understand why this has happened only after upgrade to 3.5.1 -
3.5.0's should have reverted you multipath.conf just as well during each
  vdsm startup.

The good thing is that this annoying behavior has been dropped from the
master branch, so that 3.6 is not going to have it. Vdsm is not to mess
with other services config file while it is running. The logic moved to
  `vdsm-tool configure`

and so I was able to reboot and verify that my partitions on sdb were ok
and I was able to mount them (for safe I also ran an fsck against them)

Update ran around 19:20 and finished at 19:34
here the log in gzip format
   https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mvWjJDTXU1YjRWOFk/view?usp=sharing

   Reboot was done around 21:10-21:14

Here my /var/log/messages in gzip format, where you can see latest days.
   https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwoPbcrMv8mvMm1ldXljd3hZWnM/view?usp=sharing

   Any suggestion appreciated.

Current multipath.conf (where I also commented out the getuid_callout
   that
   is not used anymore):

   [root@tekkaman setup]# cat /etc/multipath.conf
   # RHEV REVISION 1.1

   blacklist {
   devnode ^(sda|sdb)[0-9]*
   }

 I think what happened is:

 1. 3.5.1 had new multipath version
 2. So vdsm upgraded the local file
 3. blacklist above was removed
(it should exists in /etc/multipath.bak)

To prevent local changes, you have to mark the file as private
 as Dan suggests.

Seems to be related to the find_multiapth = yes bug:
 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1173290

The symptoms above sound exactly liek this issue.
When find_multipahts is no (the default when the directive is not present)
I sthat all non-blacklisted devices are tried to get claimed, and this happened
above.

Blacklisting the devices works, or adding find_mutlipaths yes should also
work, because
in that case only device which have more than one path (or are explicitly
named) will be
claimed by multipath.

My 2ct.

Ben, can you confirm that this is the same issue?

   defaults {

Re: [ovirt-users] Problem wiht ovirt-node

2015-01-05 Thread Fabian Deutsch
Hey Chhristopher,

please see my inline replies.

- Original Message -
Looks like that 12/22 ISO doesn't run the installer that I can tell. I
really haven't had any good luck with any of the recent ovirt-node stuff
which is such a shame. My last installation using the 3.5-pre ISO would
install and then fail at grub/boot afterwards. I'm not sure if I'm doing
something wrong there, but I'm more or less taking all defaults in the
 install, so it is unexpected.

Can you give some details on the exact failure?

Besides that we know (and this is actually the reason why there is still no
official
Node 3.5 release) that there are issues with a lot of hardware, due to changes
to
udev, device-mapper, multipath, and kernel. And it took some time to really
identify and solve those issues with changes in our code.
Some recent patches (which landed just before and after christmas), are
addressing these issues.

We are currently in progress of giving this patches some wider testing,
but we are optimistic that these changes will address most of the hardware
problems.

And we'll also do another scratch build to allow you to test those patches as
well.

I feel like enterprise-level virtualization relies upon having the minimal
OS/install in order to match the other hypervisors. I hate to think of
just going to minimal CentOS/RHEL installs, but perhaps that's my best bet
 to get up and testing.

What can the community do to help this along? Perhaps requiring equivalent
ovirt-node releases along with every release of ovirt may put the
motivation behind it? I'm willing to help test, however I can't put my
original environment in a constant state of change, obviously. I'm willing
to build up some scenarios if that helps get to a
stable/installable/functioning ovirt-node. Those of us trying to prove
this out vs. vmware/ESX need this.

There are many ways to help. Testing - like you did - are an important (but
sometimes
painful) aspect, and I really appreciate that you continue to test!

So as mentioned above, there will be a new scratch build with more fixes
related to
hardware support, and please watch this list for the link to the build.

That build will also pickup some recent hosted-engine fixes.

Thanks
fabian

The idea of leveraging Fedora roles is a nice idea.

Surely an RFE can be opened against ovirt-node (the hypervisor part of oVirt),
but we need to see how this will fit into our plans.
I'm concerned that it will require a lot of work to create such a role, but
we'll only benefit on Fedora.
And currently we are quite focused on CentOS, because it's quite well received.

Speaking about benefits, I also wonder what benefits are. This needs more
investigations before we can answer it from the Node side.

we are using a old version of ovirt node 3.1. Also I test ovirt node

1, In ovirt node 3.1 , it seemed I can't upgrade ovirt node ,because of
 Hostvg's existence.
In Hostvg , something like ssh keys are stored here, I know this is
important . Is it possible to let the node inherit these things ? so that
I can upgrade the node without remove things in hostvg .

Hey,

could you please explain the exact flow you tried?

  2, I made a ovirt-node-iso 3.5 version myself . But when I try to
install it , it fails because the issue of selinux .

In shell mode , type localectl ,it shows this . after setenforce 0 ,
 localectl will work well .

What branch did you use to build your iso?

And for SELinux denials: Catch /var/log/audit/audit.log and create new rules
using
audit2allow.

Thanks to everyone for the answers. That helps clarify some basics for
me. I prefer to try and implement ovirt-node for the reasons stated
  above
(small, defined OS with a smaller security/management footprint), but
  now I
debate using CentOS 6 or RHEL 6. I feel that oVirt-node is very
  important
to being able to get an environment up and running securely without too
much overhead, but perhaps I need to consider minimal OS installs +
  latest
gluster release + 3.5 oVirt at this time.

oVirt node can (btw) be deployed using PXE (Foreman, Cobbler), USB and CD
  media, and virtual media.

That very much interests me since I utilize Cobbler currently for all of my
provisioning. I would assume that basically one would kickstart it like
any other RHEL-based release. Are you aware of any document that describes
 Cobbler+oVirt-Node by chance?

Hey,

for Node it's a bit different.
You can just use the kernel+initrd and some kernel arguments to deploy it via
PXE.
No kickstart needed.

Our documentation is a bit lacking the details, but you can consult this docs:
http://red.ht/1xNNXak
http://red.ht/1vkmLRc

The should work for Node as well.

One thing I was curious about is gluster support in oVirt-node. What is
the current status as far as glusterfs version and saving settings, etc.?

The pre-release build from today contains glusterfs-3.6.

Great! Thanks for the information. I've downloaded that ISO and I'm
working on getting that deployed on a couple of test blades.

Great!
Let me know anything you would let us to know :)

I sincerely hope that this is not answered elsewhere as I've done
  several
searches and have yet to find a solid answer. I have three (what I
believe
to be) basic questions (with perhaps some subs there):

 1) What is the latest oVirt-node release and where would one
  download it
(I appear to only see 3.4 -based releases of the ISO available)? It
  is
3.5-based and/or is there an upgrade path? Which glusterfs release
  is
 currently included with oVirt-node?

Hey,

there are some 3.5 pre-release isos available here:
http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/ovirt-3.5-pre/iso/

They are quite old. The reason why there is still no Node, is that we
  are
experiencing
installation problems after CentOS 6.6 got released.

That is why there is no Node for 3.5 yet, becuase we don't want to
  provide
a Node which is dead on arrival. This ain't fun for anyone.

 2) As I understand it, newer releases of oVirt-node allow you to do
  an
installation of the self-hosted engine at this time. Is that
  correct?

Yes, that will work. Due to problems mentioned above, we still need to
  do
some
fixes to the hosted-engine part of Node, but once they land, HE will
  work
on Node.

 3) Is there any functionality that one would be losing out on by
deploying
oVirt via oVirt-node vs. using full-OS installation? Which is the
  more
 recommended?

Yes, ovirt-node is not as customizable as a regular host.
I.e. you can not (easily) modify the boot process, or install custom
  rpms.

Sometimes this is seen as a restriction, other see this as a well
  defined

ignorance. I
appreciate any feedback and information that you could share.

No, no worries. There weren't any Node updates (besides the weekly
  meeting
minutes)
for a while.

We still traget to release Node for oVirt 3.5 ASAP.

Re: [ovirt-users] Latest ovirt-node release/installation

2014-11-14 Thread Fabian Deutsch
- Original Message -
I sincerely hope that this is not answered elsewhere as I've done several
searches and have yet to find a solid answer. I have three (what I believe
to be) basic questions (with perhaps some subs there):

 1) What is the latest oVirt-node release and where would one download it
(I appear to only see 3.4 -based releases of the ISO available)? It is
3.5-based and/or is there an upgrade path? Which glusterfs release is
 currently included with oVirt-node?

Hey,

there are some 3.5 pre-release isos available here:
http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/ovirt-3.5-pre/iso/

They are quite old. The reason why there is still no Node, is that we are
experiencing
installation problems after CentOS 6.6 got released.

That is why there is no Node for 3.5 yet, becuase we don't want to provide
a Node which is dead on arrival. This ain't fun for anyone.

 2) As I understand it, newer releases of oVirt-node allow you to do an
installation of the self-hosted engine at this time. Is that correct?

Yes, that will work. Due to problems mentioned above, we still need to do some
fixes to the hosted-engine part of Node, but once they land, HE will work on
Node.

 3) Is there any functionality that one would be losing out on by deploying
oVirt via oVirt-node vs. using full-OS installation? Which is the more
 recommended?

Yes, ovirt-node is not as customizable as a regular host.
I.e. you can not (easily) modify the boot process, or install custom rpms.

[ovirt-users] oVirt Node 3.5 build available for testing

2014-11-14 Thread Fabian Deutsch
Hey,

finally we reached a stage again where we can provide an oVirt Node.
The following oVirt Node ISO contains the oVirt 3.5.0 packages.

Please go ahead, test it and provide feedback in case of issues.

https://fedorapeople.org/~fabiand/node/3.5/ovirt-node-iso-3.5.0.ovirt35.20141114.0.el6.iso

To learn something more about oVirt Node please visit
http://www.ovirt.org/Node
http://www.ovirt.org/Quick_Start_Guide#Install_oVirt_Node

Please note that this is still an pre-release, and we are aware that there are
still
issues with the hosted-engine part of Node.
But this part will see some (already pending updates) in the near future.

Re: [ovirt-users] Latest ovirt-node release/installation

2014-11-14 Thread Fabian Deutsch
- Original Message -
Thanks to everyone for the answers. That helps clarify some basics for
me. I prefer to try and implement ovirt-node for the reasons stated above
(small, defined OS with a smaller security/management footprint), but now I
debate using CentOS 6 or RHEL 6. I feel that oVirt-node is very important
to being able to get an environment up and running securely without too
much overhead, but perhaps I need to consider minimal OS installs + latest
gluster release + 3.5 oVirt at this time.

oVirt node can (btw) be deployed using PXE (Foreman, Cobbler), USB and CD
media, and virtual media.

One thing I was curious about is gluster support in oVirt-node. What is
the current status as far as glusterfs version and saving settings, etc.?

The pre-release build from today contains glusterfs-3.6.

- fabian

 Thanks again!

Can we instead break the heavier features to smaller phases, that are

Hey,

Re: [ovirt-users] importing a qcow2 disk into ovirt 3.5?

2014-10-21 Thread Fabian Deutsch
- Original Message -
I've just been doing some searching to try and work out how to get a vmware
 windows VM into ovirt.
It seems that the newest virtv2v has dropped support for importing from an
ESXi standalone machine - and now only works with vcenter. I didn't have
any success with using the current virt-v2v attaching to an ESXi host.

I've prepared the VM by first removing the vmware tools and have installled
the various virtio drivers, as well as running the 'mergeide' registry file
to enable IDE. I've used 'qemu-img' to convirt this VMDK file to QCOW2. It
does not appear that there is a straightforward way for me to import this
 new qcow2 disk into ovirt.

It seems my best option at the moment is to export the VMware VM as an OVA
and then try and use a newer virt-v2v to import this into ovirt.

Hey Paul,

I think the OVA is what you need for Engine.
Once you get that file you can import it.
So: Use the OVA offered by the VMWare thing, or use a script like this one:

http://jenkins.ovirt.org/user/fabiand/my-views/view/Node/job/ovirt-appliance_engine-3.5_master_merged/ws/ovirt-appliance/engine-appliance/scripts/create_ova.py
depends on https://github.com/redhat-imaging/imagefactory

To convert the qcow2 to an OVA.

- fabian

Alternatively I could construct a VM in virt-manager and attach the converted
qcow2 disk to it, and then use virt-v2v to import this into ovirt.

Can someone suggest an alternative course of action? It seems strange that I
can't just import a disk into ovirt, construct a VM and attach the disk.

Is there anything int he works to make this process easier?

 Thanks,
 Paul

I remember not so much time ago that VMware generated OVA format was NOT
 compatible for import into oVirt/RHEV
 see for example this thread:
 http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2014-August/027059.html

Oh, I didn't recall that a few minutes ago.

Did anything change in the mean time and is perhaps the new virt-v2v
available with ova functionality in it?

AFAIK the new virt-v2v is still not supporting OVAs.

That means, we need to create the ovas ourselfs using some script (like the one
above).

 Hi.

I have a issue with 3.1.0_master (20140912.0) on following hardware:

 ProLiant BL460c Gen8
 FLB Adapter 1: HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 554FLB Adapter

I can install node but when booting the server I get I/O errors as if LUN is
 offline.

Hey Raul,

can you describe these errors or provide a screenshot/log?

Logging into admin (TUI) console is not possible.

If I reboot and set the rootpw I can log in and see that /var/log is mounted
 read-only:

mount: cannot remount block device /dev/mapper/HostVG-Logging read-write, is
 write-protected

multipath -ll shows that all paths are OK, but if I look at dmesg ouput, I
see device-mapper: multipath: Failing path x:xx. was logged at boot for all
 paths.

I have successfully installed previous node iso version (3.0) and plain
 CentOS on this hardware.

Did you try booting in permissive mode (appending enforcing=0 to the kernel
cmdline).

Greetings
fabian

 Can you help?

In addition, I've uploaded this image to the oVirt public glance repository,

So, if you already have an oVirt environment, and you would like to play with
the new one using this appliance, all you need to do is import it as a
template, and create VMs from it.
 (see

for details on how to do that).

Haven't tested this image yet, but I'm importing it as a template as we speak
 :-)

Hey,

I just discovered that the appliance has issues and not root password can be
set.
I'm working on this, please remove it from glance again (kudos for uploading it
so quick!) and expect an update later today.

is IMHO related to graphics).
Once we know that I'll see if the bug below fixes it.

I'd need your help to verify that we are also including all relevant
dependencies.

Thanks

Lets first try to isolate your FC issure. So you are using the latest

should support Qlogic adapters out of the box (IMHO they are the best
 supported HBAs in Linux).
 Please try a:
 # lsmod | grep qxl
to see whatever the qxl module is loaded. Keep in mind you can run into
problems with other conrollers in your host, though I only had this with LSI

Further check on the FC switch if the N port is logged in and the zoning is

 Finally, check with

 Hi All:
To be honest I do not see any config file in the host node
/etc/ovirt-node inside, so even I put in the global maintenance mode I
still don't know how to change the host to the new IP address.

Hey Paul,

if you are using oVirt Node (btw what version are you using?), then there are a
couple of files, there is
/etc/default/ovirt

and the well known ifcfg files:
/etc/sysconfig/netwprk-scripts/ifcfg-*

And some other paths which are handled by vdsm.

And vdsm is actually managing the network configuration when a Node is
registered, that means, it can be that any changes to the configuration files
get overwritten by vdsm again.

Maybe Toni can say something about this.

And I am also not sure if Engine will still recognize a Node, when you change
the IP of the Node, without letting the Engine know about that.

Sandro, do you know how you can tell Engine that the IP of a Node changed?

Well, I think you can move the hosts to global maintenance, shutdown the
hosted engine vm, move the first host and the vm to the new network.
After that you should be able to move the other hosts to the new network.
When finished you can exit global maintenance.

Never tested such scenario so if any other can provide more info and maybe

Not sure about what happen with the certificates if they've been generated

Hey Paul,

yep - we are actually working on el7 support. And the current master should be
in a not to bad shape.

We still need to see when we switch to provide el7 based Nodes, which is not
only limited by the code readiness but also by the supporting infrastructure,
which needs to be migrated to el7.

- fabian

I see in the announcement for the RC that there is an el6 based node iso.

It looks like support for el7 as a host is coming along pretty well.

Ah, great !!! And is there a Debian flavor ?

No. Currently not.
But Node became more stable over the last months, and you might want to try
this snapshot build:
http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/ovirt-3.5-pre/iso/ovirt-node-iso-3.5.0.ovirt35.20140805.0.el6.iso

It is my favorite distribution ;-)

Not yet, and I don't know if it is on the roadmap.
you could maybe create your own, it's basically
 this workflow:
 install $distro
 throw out all unneeded stuff
 install virt stuff (libvirt+vdsm)
 apply hardening (selinux etc)
 create iso

I go with centos minimal and customize
 that myself, works really well.

I don't know if vdsm is already complete
platform independent (afaik it should be).

the initial development was all on fedora
and el6, so this is where it runs best atm.

but I know for sure there are plans to
 make it distribution agnostic, but
 I don't know if this includes a pre-created
iso for ovirt-node based on debian or gentoo.

maybe fabian can shed some light on the
 future plans.

The current Node can really only be created for Fedora related distrios, so
CentOS, RHEL and Fedora itself.
The reason for this is that all parts the build process is tailored around
Fedora related tools. Namely kickstarts, and lviecd-tools.

We are currently thinking about how we can change Node and make it more
friendly, the distro agnostic idea also goes into this thoughts - but there is
nothing concrete on that front yet.

Hey Jaco,

Cheers - I'll look for it give it a go.

Could I ask if an install-to-host option is available?
Also that the memtest image integrity tests are available at boot.

Yep - The installation is the default option.

I've also noted that there are not corresponding MD5 sums of images
available on sites, so it's tricky to validate/verify the integrity of
 images downloaded before flashing.

The iso is checking itself when you boot it up. But yes, let me attach the
md5sums of upcoming ovirt-node-iso builds.

[ovirt-users] Weekly oVirt Engine Appliance builds

2014-07-14 Thread Fabian Deutsch
Hey,

Finally there are weekly Fedora 19 based oVirt Engine Appliance builds.

They can be found in oVirt’s jenkins instance:
http://jenkins.ovirt.org/view/All/job/ovirt-appliance_master_merged/

An ova file is created, this can either be used with Engine or you can extract
it (it's a compressed tarball) and use it with four favorite virtualization
solution.

[ovirt-users] oVirt Node ISO for 3.5-pre

2014-07-08 Thread Fabian Deutsch
Hey,

here is another draft ISO which is intended to be used for testing with oVirt
3.5.

This ISO also provides for the first time the oVirt Node Hosted Engine plugin.

http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/ovirt-3.5-pre/iso/ovirt-node-iso-3.5.0.ovirt35.20140707.el6.iso

We've learned from the past: To circumvent some SELinux issues, please append
enforcing=0 to the kernel commandline on boot.

And please provide us your feedback, so we can take a look and address the
problem.

Hey Simon,

We basically need some patches to change the defaults on Node, to let
gluster work out of the box.

This would include persisting the correct paths and enabling glusterd if

 glusterd
 glusterd0:off 1:off 2:on3:on4:on5:on6:off

I then reboot the node and see the following:

[root@ovirt_node]# service glusterd status glusterd is stopped

 [root@ovirt_node]# chkconfig --list glusterd
 glusterd0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off

 [root@ovirt_node]# ls -l /var/lib/glusterd/vols/ total 0

No more gluster volume configuration files.

 I've taken a look through
 http://www.ovirt.org/Node_Troubleshooting#Making_changes_last_.2F_Persisting_changes
but I'm unsure what needs to be done to persist this configuration.

To get glusterd to start on boot, do I need to manually persist /etc/rc*
 files?

I see files /var/lib/glusterd mentioned in /etc/rwtab.d/ovirt. Is this a
list of the files/dirs that should be persisted automatically? If so, is it
recursive and should it include everything in /var/lib/glusterd/vols?

TIA for any help with this.

  Simon

 Hi Simon,
it actually sounds like a bug to me, as node are supposed to support
 gluster.

 Ryan / Fabian- thoughts?

Hey,

I vaguely remember that we were seeing a bug like this some time ago.
We fixed /var/lib/glusterd to be writable (using tmpfs), but it can
actually be that we need to persist those contents.

But Simon, can you give details which configuration files are missing
and why glusterd is not starting?

Thanks
fabian

Either way I suggest you take a look in the below link-

Let s know how it works.

Fabian can reply to the rest.

Yep. Node has a read-only root filesystem, which has some overlays to
allow limited changes.

getting LVM volume group UUID overruns.

Do you mean collissions here, or can you explain it a bit more.

  I'm using direct attach fiber
channel, and everything looks good, but there appears to be some UUID
or Volume group name in my list of LUNs that matches some sort of lvm
key from the node root file system. This only happens on the node
that I installed from the iso. I built all of these nodes in a vm,
then set that image to boot. I did NOT copy that lun from one top the
others, nor are any of the hosts luns visible from any of the other
hosts. Not sure where to start. I'm going to reinstall from a
bootable cd directly connected to my blade and see if that clears up
  the problem.

Could you please explain abit more about your setup.
If you have a SAN, an all LUNs of it are visible by all hosts, and you
install Node on more than one host, then it could come to collsisions.

Node is using some predefined LV names, e.g. Root, which will cause
collisions if there are more LUNs with LVs which have the same name.

fabian

Subject: [Users] node spin including qemu-kvm-rhev?

I understand that there are ongoing discussions with the Centos people
regarding a suitable home for recompiled qemu-kvm packages.
Given that the ovirt node is our own spin, is there any reason why that
couldn't include the recompiled qemu-kvm packages that will then allow us to
use live snapshots and do live migrations? Itamar recently mentioned that we
already build these via a jenkins task.

Nodes built on top of a Centos install will still be an issue but I think
  its
reasonable that the ovirt-node iso could include these custom packages.
This way we don't have to potentially wait until 3.4.1 or 3.5 to get the
  live
snapshot/migration features. The caveat would be that these features would
only be supported if the nodes were all ovirt node iso based.

  What are people's thoughts?

Sounds reasonable as long as you understand mix and match will become an
 issue.
The questions is how do we differentiate between the nodes to make sure no one
 mixes them by mistake?

Hey,

yeah - that is also my concern.
oVirt node has a mechanism (in master) to expose that features are
present or not, but I don't know if vdsm has the capability to pass this
on to Engine, and if Engine has the logic to detect incompatabilities
based on the underlying qemu-kvm-rhev version.

I saw a post from Fabian that he had re-enabled jenkins builds of the
node image based on Fedora 19/20 (but not yet including the VDSM
plugin). Presumably the main goal of this is to ensure that things in
node land are OK for an upcoming spin based on EL7?

EL7 is one point, but there were users also asking for Fedora based
Nodes and we use Fedora for development, to have stable Nodes (at some
point later) based on CentOS.

If ovirt does go back to having Fedora and EL based node images in the
short term it would mean that live migration will work on the Fedora
 images.

The Fedora based images are at least for now available from Jenkins.

If it was also decided to allow the EL based node image to include the
recompiled qemu-kvm-rhev package the Ovirt release notes could then
say that when using an ovirt node image live migration is supported,
as is when a fedora install has the ovirt hypervisor packages
 installed.

What is this ovirt hypervisor package you mention?

- fabian

It would only be that an EL based system - built up to then also
include the ovirt hypervisor packages - that live migration would not
be supported - at this stage.
This can change when the details are further worked out with the
Centos people about how the updated qemu-kvm packages will be hosted
 and made available.
In the meantime, people that want to set things up so that live
migration is there can do so.

Once live migration is in place I think it would be interesting to try
and find out from people interested (or already testing ovirt) that
have VMware backgrounds/experience what they think is the the largest
outstanding issue feature wise when comparing ovirt to Vcenter. What
would stop them from migrating from vcenter to ovirt?

you could try sending text-only emails :)

By the 'ovirt hypervisor packages' I meant installing the OS first of
all and then making it into an ovirt 'node' by installing the required
packages, rather than installing from a clean slate with the ovirt
node iso. Sorry if that was a bit unclear.

Okay - thanks for the explanation.
In general I would discourage from installing the ovirt-node package ona
normal host.
If you still want to try it be aware that the ovirt-node pkg might mess
with your system.
