Hello!
Compute nodes are also gluster nodes or they are separate?
Host resolution between al 2/4 nodes is OK?
Did you try to create volume from Ovirt interface? ..and not from cli?

Re: [ovirt-users] Communication errors between engine and nodes?

2015-03-19 Thread Gabi C
Hello!

FYI:
updated 2 days ago 3 hypervisor from my setup to latest 3.5-patternfly ,
rebooted nodes, and engine and the error seems to be gone: no longer got
heartbeat exeeded.

 Hi Roel,

You can change this setting in two ways.
 - you can update it in db directly as you stated (not recommended)
 - use engine-config -s vdsHeartbeatInSeconds=20 but prior to running
 this command
you need to update config file
 /etc/ovirt-engine/engine-config/engine-config.properties
with vdsHeartbeatInSeconds.type=Integer. This config value is not
 exposed by default.

 Thanks,
 Piotr

If I would like to change the heartbeat value, do I have to update the

 another way (e.g. config file)?

Unfortunately log entries that you copied give me almost no information
 about nature of your issue.
There are few things that we can do to understand what is going on with
 your setup.

Heartbeat functionality provides means to detect whether we still have
connection with a host. By default heartbeat timeout is set to 10 seconds
but it can be modified by setting vdsHeartbeatInSeconds.

In general whenever there are no incoming responses nor heartbeat frame
is not received engine will invalidate the connection and will attempt to
recover. If reconnection was successful you want see any other consequences
of loosing single heartbeat. I would explore stability of your network so
if the network is busy or you loose network packets from time to time this
kind of entries in the log are expected. You can increase heatbeat value
and see whether it will work better for your env.

If you confirm that your network is stable we could explore the issue
further by setting debug level logging for your engine to understand
exactly how the messages are processes by a host and when we receive
 responses.

VM's still continue to work correctly and the storage domains (NFS
shares) are still connected and reachable on the nodes, at the exact time
 that this issue is happening.

Contacted our network engineer to see if he could see a load increase
on our network, or could see any latency, errors, etc.
Unfortunately he could not detect anything yet (he is still
 investigating this).

Looking at older posts I assume that upgrading the engine should be

  Hi,

maybe a stupid one. Just want to make sure that nothing goes wrong. We
plan to make a rolling upgrade of our landscape going to 3.5.1 in
 december.
So we always need some hypervisor nodes up and running during the
 process.

Looking at older posts I assume that upgrading the engine should be
sufficient, while hypervisor nodes with vdsm 4.14.17 (from 3.4 repos) and
the active VMs keep on running. The start of the engine after the upgrade
should catch up and resync all states.

Afterwards I clean hypervisor hosts one by one and clean/reinstall it
 into
 the cluster?

  Thanks in advance.

  Markus

Yeah, it sounds like the same issue, which is to be fixed (as much as
oVirt matters) in ovirt-3.5.1. The underlying libgfapi
 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1093594 may take longer to
 solve.

[ovirt-users] Cannot create disk image on storage domain NOT master

2014-09-17 Thread Gabi C
Hello!

- 1 oVirt Engine (not hosted), 4 nodes, 3 in Default datacenter, 1 in a
local-storage type datacenter;
- Recently upgraded from 3.4.2 to 3.4.3;

DefaultDatacenter has, along mandatoryISO and Export domain, two
storage domains storage_gluster2 aprox 550Gb and storage_gluster3

As you can guess :-), the three nodes serve also as gluster bricks, each
with 2 bricks in the above mentioned storage domains, both in replicated
mode.

Master domain is storage_gluster3.

After create new VM, trying to add new disk on storage_gluster2 , which
is NOT master domain raise (ovirt-engine.log)

 1. no downtime should happen, as you can upgrade hosts by moving
them to maintenance, which will live migrate VMs running on them.

 2. fedora 18 is EOL, so 'yum update' isn't going to help here.

 3. re-install host should refresh vdsm and its dependent packages if
the repo's configured have newer versions. when the host is in
maint, you can simply run 'yum update' on the host, then
re-activate it (of course reboot if kernel got updated, etc.)

I've followed those steps, and I can get VMs migrated *to* the updated
 nodes. I have two worries:

   1. VMs migrated to the updated nodes cannot be migrated back to the
old nodes. So once I start, it's all-in or nothing. Is that to be
  expected?

on fedora hosts this can happen, since there is no live migration
 compatibility between fedora versions.
 on .el6 hosts this shouldn't happen[1]

   2. Once all the nodes are backed up, is there a fairly sure-fire way
to update the master engine? Is that documented somewhere?

 a. you should be able to upgrade engine or hosts regardless of each
other.
 b. the setup (upgrade) script takes a db backup just in case. if you
happen to run it in a VM, snapshot/backing it up doesn't hurt as
well.
 c. if upgrading to a new minor version, note to change in the upgraded
engine the cluster and DC level to benefit from new features.

 Thanks!

[1] there is a known caveat is you have selinux disabled on some machines
 and enabled on others.

 Hi,

On our second oVirt setup in 3.4.0-1.el6 (that was running fine), I did a
yum upgrade on the engine (...sigh...).
 Then rebooted the engine.
This machine is hosting the NFS export domain.
Though the VM are still running, the storage domain is in invalid status.
 You'll find below the engine.log.

At first sight, I thought it was the same issue as :
 http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2014-March/022161.html
 because it looked very similar.
But the NFS export domain connection seemed OK (tested).
I did try every trick I could thought of, restarting, checking anything...
Our cluster stayed in a broken state.

On second sight, I saw that when rebooting the engine, then NFS export
domain was not mounted correctly (I wrote a static /dev/sd-something in
fstab, and the iscsi manager changed the letter. Next time, I'll use LVM or
 a label).
So the NFS served was void/empty/black hole.

I just realized all the above, and spent my afternoon in cold sweat.
Correcting the NFS mounting and restarting the engine did the trick.
What still disturbs me is that the unavailability of the NFS export domain
should NOT be a reason for the MASTER storage domain to break!

Following the URL above and the BZ opened by the user (
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1072900), I see this has been
corrected in 3.4.1. What gives a perfectly connected NFS export domain, but
 empty?

PS : I see no 3.4.1 update on CentOS repo.

Which is the proper way of keeping nodes up to date?

I tried from WebUI, after putting node on mainetnance

Host is in maintenance mode, you can Activate it by pressing the Activate

here
.

but no effect, so I guess that installing ovirt repo and
fedora-ovirt-preview repo is the proper way, right?

Install Windows on a IDE drive; add a second image virtio-scsi.
After the installation finishes install the driver for the unknown
controller you find in device management with 'update driver'
Shutdown the vm, change the boot disk to virtio-scsi or virtio-blk

Did you change back to your W2K8 iso after loading the driver?
The installer displays a very misleading message if you don't have your

[ovirt-users] Storage domain - defining fields

2014-04-25 Thread Gabi C
Hello!

My setup 1 engine Fedora 19 ovirt 3.4 managing 3 nodes Fedora 19 + ovirt
3.4 updated; those nodes acts also as gluster server for 2 storage domains,
each domain 3 bricks replicated ( so 3 bricks each).

I have one questions regarding the fields one have to complete when
defining a new storage domain and its importance.

First, field *Use Host* - you have to complete with one of the nodes. Of
course you can use any of the host in cluster, *but which is its
significance/importance*? * If you reboot that node, you suppose to have
any issue with the storage?*

The same question with field *Path* - gluster case - *Path to gluster
volume to mount* formatted as HOST:VOLUME , where host can be the same
as above mentioned field- *Use Host* or any af the gluster cluster
member; *which is its significance/importance?*

*Again If you reboot that node, you suppose to have any issue with the
storage?*
My experience with rebooting these nodes*, *after moving VM's and putting
it in Maintenance was good*,* until yesterday, when after such reboot I've
got some corrupted VM images, and subsequently I had to restore them.

Error message follows :

Exit message: cannot read header
'/rhev/data-center/mnt/glusterSD/10.125.1.194:gluster__data3/5fe658b1-43ff-4bfd-97d6-28217cf415df/images/321ad473-3741-4825-8ac0-6c416aa8f490/1a21454d-9931-4ed8-ba38-7126528664a1':
Input/output error.

Did I miss some step(s), beside moving VM's and puting node in maintenace,
before reboot one host node, servig also as gluster node?

Any hint, link would be appreciated!

No, thank you for reporting this.

The patch still awaits verification http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/26254/

I would very much appreciate if you can apply it on your host's vdsm,
re-add the QoS profiles, and report if life is good again.

fedora-virt.preview repo on the node in order to upgrade also libvirt and

[Users] VM satelit is down. Exit message: 'int' object has no attribute 'replace'.

2014-03-31 Thread Gabi C
Hello!

3.3.3 migrated to latest stable 3.4.0

3 nodes F19

KVM Version:1.4.2 - 15.fc19
LIBVIRT Version:libvirt-1.0.5.9-1.fc19
VDSM Version:libvirt-1.0.5.9-1.fc19

oVirt Engine Version: 3.4.0-1.fc19

Upgraded took place with 3 Vm up and 2 down: first upgraded engine, then
after freeing one node at a time node of and updating it.

After upgrade when I try to run any of the 2 powered down machines, I get
VM . is down. Exit message: 'int' object has no attribute
'replace'.

Any ideas?

You didn't upgrade kvm and libvirt as per the upgrade notes. You need
to add the virt-preview repo when on Fedora and run yum update. Check the
 release notes for 3.4

You've very likely experienced the same problem reported here
 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1067064

A fix was already been committed.

 About kvm and libvirt, you only need them on the nodes running hypervisors;
engine itself does not depend on them.

Hi Joop,

1. I did disabled firewalld/iptbles on both nodes and engines.
2. Disabling selinux: when setting to permissive via /etc/selinux/config
(and of course unpersist/persist them - /config/etc) doesn't work
( as write this I've just reboot one node with the above modification and
when I try to ssh node I get connection closed by... - of course selinux
is enabled; after setenforce 0 ssh is OK.The only way I manage to diasble
selinux was

mount -o.rw,remount /run/initramfs/live
edit grub.cfg and add selinux=0 to kernel line

3. one strange issue: after I reboot nodes, trying to ssh raise ssh warning
WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED! so I have to remove host
entry from .ssh/.known_host in order to connect
4. I am about to check name resolution
5.I have glusterfs also on both nodes. After I put nodes on maintenace,
stop gluster volumes and rebooting nodes caused gluster volumes to
dissapear from engine web interface

Thanks

If the installation ends, either with or without error, it will give you a
log location. Upload the log to a paste.bin and mail the link.

 @Gabi,
There should be more info in either the vdsm.log on the SPM server or in
the engine.log on the engine server, see above for lettings us know what
 the error is.

Having installed oVirt, probably dozens of times, I have some guidelines:
 - temporarily disable firewalld/iptables (if all works, enable should
still work, scripts with rules are generated and location is given)
 - make selinux permissive either via setenforce 0 (until next boot) or via
/etc/selinux/config ( survives reboots), dont disable it!
 - make sure fqdn work in both directions between engine and host(s)
 (either using /etc/hosts or DNS)
 - make sure NetworkManager is disabled and network enabled

 Hi,

my advice would be the following:

for nodes use either a full
minimal centos or fedora and install ovirt.org
 repo on top of that.

 then everything works.

the node.isos provided by ovirt are in pre-alpha
 state to be honest.

sure you still have to disable selinux
 (or better configure it correctly).

But you have no problems with configurations which are
not persisted and as a bonus you can install
$your_favourite_tool on the node, such as tcpdump
 nmap etc. for debugging.

Again: I would strongly advise against useing
the node.isos from ovirt.org at the moment.

There is just too much stuff not working
or bugged, even simple things like network
 configuration.

local - they do not have a SAN of any sort anyhow, and they do not care
 about live migration, etc.

In any case, knowing that they did not want to afford a VMware setup (which
is what I'm used to using), I proposed using oVirt to fill their needs,
having heard and read up on it a bit (It's open-source VMware, right?)
even though I had not used it before (I have however made single-node KVM
hypervisors for their group before, utilizing Open vSwitch, libvirt,
virt-manager etc., so I'm not completely ignorant of KVM/libvirt etc.)

In any case, I took one of their older servers which was already running
CentOS 6.5, installed the requisite packages on it, and in short order had
an engine server up and running (oVirt 3.3.2). That seems to have been the
easy part :-/ Now came the installation of a hypervisor node. I downloaded
and burned an ISO of the latest oVirt node installer
(ovirt-node-iso-3.0.3-1.1.vdsm.fc19.iso) and tried to install it on one of
their target Intel servers. On the 1st try I got to the end of the setup
TUI, invoked the Install link, and was promptly thrown an error (sorry, but
forgot what it was, something like press X for a command prompt, or
Reboot.) No problem, I rebooted, selected booting off the CD again, waited
until the TUI came up, and when I tried to move past the first screen, it
threw me out to a login prompt. OK, enough of that (the server takes a long
time to reboot, and then boot off the CD) - I then thought I would try it
 on
a VMware Workstation VM (yes, I get the irony, but VMware wkstn can handle
nested virt, so it's a great testbed platform for OpenStack, etc.) because
that would install a heck of a lot faster. That went a lot better - got the
oVirt node 3.0.3 installed on the first try.

More pain was soon to follow, however. I logged in and started configuring
the node. The TUI was easy enough - much like an ESXi node ;) I set the
 NIC
to IPv4 static, entered in the correct IP info, registered a DNS name for
the IP I had assigned, and then tested pinging the engine, all was good. I
then moved on to the section where you define the engine. I entered in the
FQDN of the engine, verified the key fingerprint, and clicked the Save and
Register link at the bottom. That seemed to work, so I completed the rest
of the TUI, and then looked at the oVirt engine web UI. There was my new
node, ready for authorization. I clicked the link to authorize it, and
 after
a while, the UI came back with Install Failed status. Hmmm. So I went
 back
to the node's TUI, and now some of the screens said that the IP addr was
unconfigured? I went then to the Network screen, and sure enough, the NIC
 at
the bottom showed Unconfigured. WTF? So I went and entered in the correct
info back in the IPv4 section, and then arrowed down to the Save link and
clicked it - and the next screen said something like No info needing
changes, nothing to do. Wh? Went back to the network setup screen, NIC
still showing Unconfigured even though the IPv4 info still was there. I
did a ping test at this point from the Ping link on the network setup page,
and what do you know - I could still ping IP's (the engine, the default gw,
etc.) But as I moved around the TUI, other screens still said that the
network was unconfigured. Went back to the Web UI of the engine, put the
host in Maint, then tried to Activate it, still no go - Install Failed.
 Even
though I had configured the node to allow remote access and set a password,
and also verified via nmap that TCP port 22 on the node was indeed
listening, when I tried to SSH into the node as admin, I immediately got a
connection closed message, so that failed as well. Went back to

 From webadmin UI

 1) Go to Data Center TAB

 3) From the Storage TAB in the bottom select the old ISO
 4) Press the Maintenance button
 5) Press the Detach button

Now you can attach a new ISO

I moved to oVirt Node - 3.0.3 - 1.1.fc19 on both nodes an updated the
 engine

the only bug I encounter was the one related to ssh-selinux,
 circumvented by
  setenforce 0.
Of course, every time I reboot nodes I had to go to console and manually
  setenforce 0

Is there a bug for the oVirt Node for this?

 Antoni,

can you tell what log files to look at to find out why that storage
domain vanished - from a Engine side?

And do you know what files related to gluster are changed on the Node
 side?

 Gabi,

could you please provide the contents of /config/files on the Node.

Glusterfs data goes under /data directory which was automatically
configured when I installed the node.

Yep, /data is on the Data LV - that should be good.

Hello!

In order to increase disk space I want to add a new disk drive to ovirt
node. After adding this should I proceed as normal - pvcreate, vgcreate,
lvcreate and so on - or these configuration will not persist?

 please try from engine:

 ssh -i /etc/pki/ovirt-engine/keys/engine_id_rsa root@node

this is similar to what engine is trying to do.

but as far as I see, the problem is within the selinux policy.

Still get those 'denied' in audit.log - node!

Because you are at permissive mode.

Now, what do you get in engine.log in this state when you trying to add
 node via webadmin?

I confirm that manual ssh works both ways.

I'll try to sniff.

   please try from engine:

   ssh -i /etc/pki/ovirt-engine/keys/engine_id_rsa root@node

this is similar to what engine is trying to do.

but as far as I see, the problem is within the selinux policy.

Re: [Users] Adding Gluster support after the fact.

Hello!

I have installed from iso
ovirt-node-iso-3.1.0-0.999.201310020841draft.vdsm.fc19.iso in Both mode.
When I try to check the gluster checkbox on the cluster edit page, then put
the node in mainenance mode an try to Reinstall I get
There are no ISO versions that are compatible with the Host's current

recovered from that, I still want to add this. Any help would be

Recommended way is to select 'Both' for 'ApplicationMode' during
 engine-setup.

But if you want to do this after engine-setup, you need to tweak a
database entry. You could find an option_name called 'ApplicationMode' in
the vdc_options table, change the value of the field to 255, then restart
ovirt-engine service. Now you should able to manage both virt and gluster
 in oVirt.

Just set check the gluster checkbox on the cluster edit page, put the
node/host into maintenance and reinstall it. It will install the gluster
bits and you'll be able to add volumes.

This is possible only if oVirt is installed in 'Both' (Virt+Gluster) mode.

 Thanks,
 Kanagaraj

Re: [Users] Adding Gluster support after the fact.

2013-10-29 Thread Gabi C
Hello!

Sorry, I was unclear about my instalation: so my management node is Fedora
19 with Ovirt-stables and ovirt-updates-testing repos enabled installed
with 'Both' - to be sure I 'grep' ed in ovirt-engine-setup
'ApplicationMode' and got 'select
fn_db_add_config_value('ApplicationMode','255','general');' ; my 2 hosts
(nodes) are virt-node-iso-3.1.0-0.999.201310020841draft.vdsm.fc19.iso. and
the problem is as described in my previous message.

 Hi,

no, when talking about both mode the ovirt-engine (management node)
 setup was the targeted installation.
if you did not install the engine in both mode, you need to tweak the
 DB or reinstall.

Re: [Users] Unable to install oVirt Node 3.0.1: Exception: RunTimeError('Failed to partition/format')

2013-10-22 Thread Gabi C
Hello!

It is a real RAID controller ServeRAID 8k that comes with IBM xSeries 3650.

First I hit this problem, tryin' to upgrade from 3.2 - i.e
ovirt-node-iso-2.6.1-20120228.fc18.isohttp://resources.ovirt.org/releases/3.2/iso/ovirt-node-iso-2.6.1-20120228.fc18.iso-
to 3.3 - ovirt-node-iso-3.0.1-1.0.2.vdsm.fc19.iso.
http://resources.ovirt.org/releases/3.3/iso/ovirt-node-iso-3.0.1-1.0.2.vdsm.fc19.iso...in
fact the message was Error 'Failed to set install bootloader' - see
http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2013-September/016434.html --,
message which appear in the last styage of upgrade ( 5 out of 5).

Then I rebooted, enter the RAID setup, erase the array, reinitiliaze the
disks, recrete the array with option full - this take some time to complete
but when ready the array was available. I also tried to create the array
with Quick option - this option immediately create the array and made it
available to the OS but in the background RAID controller was still
creating the array i.e. some disk operations and got same error.

 Hey Edgars and Gabi,

nice that both of you could solve this problem.
Could you tell what kind of raid it was? Was it a fake raid or a real
raid controller, and how did the raid setup look when it failed and how
 did it look afterwards?
I'd like to capture these informations to nail down this problem a bit
 more.

 Thanks
