[ovirt-users] Slides / Demo info to do a presentation to a small group.

2014-06-27 Thread Robert Middleswarth
I remember reading someone was working on putting together a kinda
starter kit for doing a presentation on oVirt. Can someone point me at
those resources. I recent joined a maker (hacker) space in my area and
part of what they do is workshops on different thing I would like to do
a workshop on oVirt. This will be a small group anywhere from 5 to 25
people so not a large number.

Thanks
Robert

For Ovirt/RHEV API, is it the same as libvirt API(it seems to me that

instead of using libvirt API?

Theforeman project is one open source project from redhat as well, and
it uses libvirt API to create KVM VMs, does it mean in order for
foreman to support creating VMs in Ovirt/RHEV cluster, it needs to use
Ovirt/RHEV API?

Re: [Users] Upgrading ovirt-engine from Centos dre repo

2012-08-01 Thread Robert Middleswarth
That is actually the same as beta1. Or the same version used on testing
day. To upgrade You have to.

Yum Remove ovirt-engine vdsm

After all the packages are installed. Make sure you are using his the
3.1 repo and not the devel one that is based on master but hasn't been
updated recently.

Yum install ovirt-engine

Run the engine-upgrade and it should give you should tell you something
about the version being the same but force-upgrade the setup.

Thanks
Robert

Attached is the log as requested.

it seems that you're using a very old 3.1 build, which we never
released during the beta process (afair).
this build is a x86_64 build, which confuses the upgrade script
(since new rpms are noarch).

I can't guarantee it will work fine (although I can't think of any
reason it won't), but using the --force-setup... parameter is a good
option.

Actually, we already fixed this bug upstream, but I'm not sure it
will get into 3.1.

Much appreciated.

Subject: [Users] ovirt-engine upgrade 3.0 to 3.1 issue

Steps taken:

Load up bare metal or a VM with FC16
Install 3.0 from http://www.ovirt.org/releases/stable/fedora/16/
Setup up something minimal (EG: engine-setup then setup a basic
datacenter/cluster/etc)
Add a FC16 or EL based node for fun as well and some VM's if
feeling
ambitious.

Back up database:
systemctl stop jboss-as.service
pg_dump -C -E UTF8 --column-inserts --disable-dollar-quoting
--disable-triggers -U postgres --format=p -f /temp/engine.sql
engine

Back up the following files within /etc/pki/ovirt-engine from a 3.0
install (preserve owner/group).
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/cacert.conf
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/ca.pem
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/cert.conf
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/01.pem
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/02.pem
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/ca.der
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/engine.cer
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/engine.der
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/database.txt
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/database.txt.attr
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/database.txt.attr.old
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/database.txt.old
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/keys/engine_id_rsa
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/keys/engine.ssh.key.txt
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/private/ca.pem
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/requests/ca.csr
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/requests/engine.req

Load up bare metal or a VM with FC17 (Upgrade from FC16 -- FC17 is
still rather messy)
Install 3.1 from http://www.ovirt.org/releases/beta/fedora/17/

Run engine-setup to get an initial setup.
stop ovirt-engine (systemctl stop ovirt-engine.service)

Copy the previously backed up /etc/pki/ovirt-engine files from
above
over top of the ones just generated (be sure to preserve
owner/group
EG: cp -a)

Drop the existing engine database: dropdb -U postgres engine
Create a new blank database: createdb -U postgres engine

Well, the problem is that you are creating here the database with createdb.
This creates all DB objects and runs all upgrade scripts.
Then when you try to restore from your file , you have problems, since
your file also tries to create the same objects.
instead of : createdb -U postgres engine
do :

echo create database engine; | psql -U postgres template1

Then continue on the next steps and it will work.

optionally, in your backup command:
instead of
pg_dump -C -E UTF8 --column-inserts --disable-dollar-quoting
use
pg_dump --data-only -E UTF8 --column-inserts --disable-dollar-quoting

then , createdb will create the db schema and your engine.sql will include only
insert

Eli
I am anything but a PG expert but exporting only the data then inserting
it on top of the upgrade scheme is a really dumb idea. It might work
today if the scheme doesn't change much but it could really breaks
things tomorrow if the scheme sees a massive change. You were correct
Just create the database restore then run the upgrade scheme.

Thanks
Robert

Populate with with the backup of the above 3.0 database:
psql -U postgres -d engine -w /temp/engine.sql

Can you please attach the engine.sql file so I will be able to
reproduce , thanks

Attempt to upgrade the DBschema via
/usr/share/ovirt-engine/dbscripts/upgrade.sh
upgrade.sh -u postgres

The DB schema upgrade will fail like so:

Running upgrade script upgrade/03_01_0260_add_job_table.sql
psql:upgrade/03_01_0260_add_job_table.sql:29: NOTICE: CREATE TABLE
/

My assumption here is that if the DB schema upgrade would work,
that
this should be the cleanest way to upgrade from 3.0 to 3.1.

The Version listed is really old. It is the beta1 builds. I would
upgrade to the latest builds and see if the problem continues since a
lot of problems were fixed since those builds were created.

3. Reinstall

Good to go right? Will this mess with vm's already running etc.

Pretty certain this will break things badly.

The un-test but the way that should work is.

Uninstall oVirt 3.0 do not engine-clean
Upgrade from Fedora 16 to Fedora 17.
Add the beta repo's
yum clean all
Yum install ovirt-engine
Run enginue-upgrade and follow it instructions

Since I was stuck at the DMV all day I haven't had a change to test
these instructions at all before doing these steps I would do a full
backup of the DB and a snapshot of the system. If you can clone the
system and do these steps on a clone even better.

Right now the built in volume controls only supports IP address on the
IP used in storage network. That is likely to change in the future. If
you want to use non-IP based one's they can be used you just have to
manually configure Glusterfs and just mount the share using posix fs or
nfs shares.

oVirt 3.1 is currently in beta and compared to 3.0 it adds a several new
features. One of the nice new features is glusterfs support. For it
intended use it works well but I personally think it needs to be
adjusted to for more generic use. The 2 main limits that effect me are.
1) Only oVirt nodes in the same cluster can be used as bricks to create
clusters. So you can't add in storage only nodes in the same oVirt
cluster as nodes. However you can create a cluster of just gluster only
nodes.

the long term plan would be dynamic clusters/services - a subset of
hosts with gluster, a subset of hosts with virt, some with both, in
overlapping clusters.
a more simple solution to this would be just allowing to specify at
host level if to use the host for gluster service and/or virt service
(so still same set of hosts in a cluster, just allowing to choose if
they are to be used for the relevant service).

A host level option would fix the issue.

 2) You can not change what interface / IP gluster uses, it will

always use the ovirtmgmt network. This is a weakness as many people have
an independent network just for storage and they can't use them with
3.1.

sorry, i don't understand this one - only the management of gluster is
done via this interface. you can define a different logical network in
the cluster for storage, configure ip addresses for them, and define
the mount point that way.
(well, apart from potential bugs on network definitions in 3.1 which
may still exist)

Unless I am missing something if I setup Gluster to use anything other
then the ovirtmgmt network then I can't create volumes because the
engine uses the ovirtmgmt networks IP's and Gluster doesn't recognize it.

If you can live with these limits then gluster intergration is for you.
Before we start you should ask yourself whether you want to use
glusterfsover NFS or posix (Native) fs. Both work and are very simlilar
in setup but they do work slightly differently. Many prefer the native
version and if you are using Fedora 17 with it latest kernal then native
(posix) fs actually supports direct IO that will increase the throuput a
lot. However I found on CentOS 6.2 nodes NFS ran faster because NFS
shares are cached. My testing was over a 1G networks so a faster network
will yield different results. Both install methods are pretty much the
same I will add notes on there differences.

cache is supposed to be only relevant to read only images like
templates, and i'm not even sure this optimization is in.
so caching is supposed to be disabled (otherwise, shared disk won't
work, etc.)

maybe something else?

NFS is faster on my network. When I looked around to see why it
suggested that reads were cached. It was real world testing you never know.

A quick word about OS. While there are plans to support EL6 and other
Linux based distributions, support is currently limited to Fedora 17.
However Andrey Gordeev ( http://www.dreyou.org/ovirt/ ) has created EL6
packages. Since Fedora 17 crashes on both my Dells every 10 to 12 hours
I use the centos builds right now. Although the CentOS builds work
really well there are a few missing features, such as live snapshots. I
have done both installs and the steps outlined below work for both.

very nice!

You mentions that We need to open some ports. There are several ways to
do this...
But actually I think it would be better if the iptables rules stored in
the Engine db are to be tweaked. Frankly, I hate storing files in
databases - that's what filesystems were designed for!
So it would be nicer if the rules are moved to vds_bootstrap, where you
could easily put two flavors thereof: one for gluster and one for
virt-only.
I am more then happy to adjust the steps. Do you have the command for
me to insert or change those?

I believe the reason the iptable rules are in the db is that we can configure
some of the ports.

sounds to me similar to other issues like sysprep customizations…
we do want to have user frriendly interface and provide a nice config of the
most useful parameters
yet we want to often provide better control for more advanced uses/users
Would it perhaps make sense to have a simple config with a nice GUI for few of
the ports we do configure often, and an option of editing/uploading of iptables
rules file? And I guess similarly for sysprep ...

Simple config would make since. Would allow for a more secure structure
as admin could for instance define a list of IP's that VDSM could listen
to improving security.

Thanks
Robert

gluster bootstrapping is needed for both installing the rpms, configuring the
host, adding iptables, etc.

shireesh/bala - any ETA from your side to push this?

engine uses the ovirtmgmt networks IP's and Gluster doesn't recognize
it.

engine uses ovirtmgmt to create them.
you can define another network to consume them (assuming you have more
than a single nic. otherwise, i'm not sure why it matters).

Are you suggesting that I add both Network IP into Gluster. That would
work but how would I know what network Gluster would use to sync up with?

Re: [Users] Getting some 3.1 screencasts

2012-07-05 Thread Robert Middleswarth

On 07/05/2012 01:11 PM, Dave Neary wrote:

Hi everyone,

At the team meeting today Jason Clift suggested that it would be great
to have some screencasts for the 3.1 release. I agree. So let's see if
we can make some!

To spread the load as much as possible, here's what I propose:

1. We come up with a set (5-10) of demo stories we want to tell in the
wiki. These should contain:

 * The feature we want to demo
 * The before recording set-up that needs to be done
 * The steps to demo the feature
 * A quick script that someone can follow to explain what they're doing.

I'd like a few of these scripts to be for existing oVirt features
(say, migrating a VM to a different node) and a few to be for features
which are new in 3.1 (see the release notes at
http://ovirt.org/wiki/Release_Notes_Draft for details there, we should
pick one or two nice visible features like all-in-one install).

How are we going to decide on these features we want to demo? Also some
of the features like Glusterfs integration might be to complex for a 5
to 10 min video.
2. From the scripts, we record the demos as .ogv using RecordMyDesktop
or GNOME Shell's built-in desktop recording

3. Finally, we do voice-overs to add a sound track to the demo (and if
we have any skilled sound engineers, some tasteful CC licenced
background music would be great!)

This way, we've broken down the creation of 5 screencasts into 15
different byte-sized tasks - script, video, voiceover - none of which
should take someone more that 20 minutes or half an hour - which
hopefully will make it easier to get them done together.

How does this plan sound?
Sounding like a good overview now it is time to get into the mud and
figure out how to implement that.

If it sounds good, which features do you think we should screencast as
top priority?

Well I think you have already hit one of the most useful ones.

1) VM migrations

Other simple idea that might make useful video's are.

2) The Log Collector (engine-log-collector), Maybe even showing the
creation of a BZ report?
3) Uploading ISO (engine-iso-uploader), May be a little simple but we
could combine with getting the ISO for windows drivers?
4) How to upload images (engine-image-uploader) or Migrating from
another system using something like virt-v2v / virt-p2v

5) Cloning a Virtual Machine from a Snapshot.
6) Creating Templates
7) Pinning Virtual Machines to specific physical CPUs
8) Setup multiple networks showing how to activate and connecting to a
hosts.

9) Adding storage domains? Building a data center?
10) Exporting VM for backup or moving to another data center.

Thanks
Robert

Thanks!
Dave.

Based on personal attempts to rebuild ovirt for EL6 the biggest hurdle
I ran into is build dependencies.

Thanks to the help of Dreyou Im using the work around of a binary
download of Maven and packages from jpackage repo. Ive built latest
vdsm without much issue and am setting up my mock environment to
rebuild the latest ovirt-engine release.

I bet that is why I am having so much trouble. I installed Maven but am
not using jpackage repo for the rest of Java

Thanks

Before Dreyou's repo I spent considerable time attempting to rebuild
Fedora SRPMs in EL6 to meet all dependencies but there were numerous
circular dependency issues building maven2 in EL6. This was before
3.1 and have not attempted a full dependency build since.

Id be interested in knowing what other challenges exist for an EL6
release and would like to help where I can.

When it was happening to me it looked like a locking problem. Since I

CentOS 6.2 with zero problems. However I learned a few little tricks
that might have helped make it not happen.

In what configuration you have installed gluster?

Both Posix FS (Native mode) and NFS using localhost:/volume format
over a 1G network.

Its performance depends on the choice of operating modes.

In both cases provisioning was really slow. I found the NFS ran
better of the two from research it was likely because NFS shares are
by default cached native gluster fs isn't. However if you are using
Fedora 17 with the latest kernel and it is stable for you Posix FS is
likely much faster since fuse supports direct IO now. Also a faster
network could make a real difference.

Thanks for your help

Does mounting the volume fail when you have two nodes?

No. It will mount and activate for a few seconds then the 2nd host
will start contending for SPM. Will become the SPM host then the 1st
host will start contending rise and repeat the data center is never
up for more then a few seconds. If I put all hosts but one into
maintenance then the data center will become active and will work
fine including allowing me to start hosts but if I take the host out
of maintenance then all the hosts will fight for SPM and the
datacenter will never become active.

Can you share the temp file where you get that error? I is
/var/tmp/rpm-tmp.hkOAWN in your latests message, but will be different
if you repeat the build.

I had already shutdown the VM so the tmp folder was cleared. I am
running the build again and going to grab a full log and that file and
fpaste them. But the build process is taking me 12 hours to do so it
will be a day or two before I can reply.

Thanks
Robert
I rerun the build process and paste bin both the full Log (
http://fpaste.org/22oU/ ) and the temp file ( http://fpaste.org/g7v6/ ).

Any help on what I am missing would be great.

Thanks
Robert

I must admit the first part of managing GlusterFS with 3.3 works very
well out of the box on oVirt 3.1.

Turn on GlusterFS in the cluster
Add your nodes
Manually add the peers in Gluster
Edit /etc/nfsmount.conf and set Defaultproto=tcp and Defaultvers=3
Create your gluster volume
Start the volume
Mount it in on one of your nodes in say /mnt
chown 36.36 /mnt

The only problem now is that you have to now use the volume as a NFS
server.

why not as posixfs?

Because I helped him get it working and I was never able to get posixfs
working but was able to get nfs working.

i have these steps courtesy of haim ateya worth trying:
   * add new volume constructed from one brick
 - volume name = myVol
 - brick dir = /opt/myBrick
   * start volume
 - ssh to node
   * chown -R vdsm:kvm /opt/myBrick
 - using ovirt do the following):
   * create new DC (Posix compliant FS)
   * create new cluster
   * add new host (virt)
   * new domain dialog
 - path = node:/myVol
 - VFS Type = glusterfs
 - Mount Options = vers=3
   * if start vm failedt to selinux - disable SELINUX on host

you would need the newer kernel with direct_io iirc
The mount options is useful to know. I have moved over to centos 6.2
since F17 was freezing up on me every 10 to 12 hours.

I am guessing I will need to wait for CentOS 6.3 to get direct IO
support and hopefully live snapshots as well. I might test glusterfs
as well. PS I use localhost:/volumename for NFS.

Thanks
Robert

For the record. This instructions worked also. Will make a note about
this as well.

Hi,

So - how are you using oVirt? Why did you choose it over alternatives?
What do you like about it? and what would you like to see change,
whether that is in terms of technical, process, or marketing changes?
I'm here to help, but to do so I need your help first!

Thank you to all those who have replied, on and off list, so far. For
those of you who sent me private messages, I'll be (anonymously)
collating your feedback and forwarding it on.

The range of users who have replied so far includes:
* Sysadmin at small web hosting business
* Cost-sensitive IT department of an unrelated industry

That would be me.

* Hosting provider specialising in HA
* Running a private cloud
* Test lab set-up considering for production deployment
Well no one should be crazy enough to go live with a product they
haven't at least ran inside a testing lab.

And the top features you've cited are:
* Stateless hypervisor
* Ability to migrate VMs

Number one reason I am working with oVirt

* RHEL and KVM
We are a debian based org so changing over to the RHEL based OS's is
more a pain then a benefit. KVM is still kinda young compared to both
Xen / Vmware it seems to work well but there aren't as many os's covered
by the vitro drivers and there seem to be more bugs / race conditions
but that has been steadily changing as it has been getting more mature

* Cost
* The ability to have your preferred OS as both hypervisor and guest
as a first class citizen

* Aimed for data center use-case rather than cloud

This would be number 2 in the list.

And the top gaps you've identified so far:
* Insufficient resources (docs) to help with production deployment on
ovirt.org

* Difficulty of configuration and getting started
* You'd like to see a more diverse contributor community
* Stability (unfortunately, I don't have any concrete examples of this
from the commenter)

* History on resource usage in hypervisors and guests
* Integration with Gluster
* Offer choices of guest agents with other distributions than RHEL

I could have created this list myself. I have hit pretty much every one
of these limits in the last few months working with the project. 3.1
adds limited support for Gluster and ovirt seems to be more stable
dispute F17 instability.

As for the question of stability the file storage system in 3.0 can be a
bit unstable. If your NFS share disappears for a few mins the file
system tends to go offline and wont reactivate. Not sure about iscsi or
FC since I don't have access to those file systems.
This is all giving me great insight into who's here - please keep it
coming!

Cheers,
Dave.

do you see smbios when editing the VM custom properties in the UI?

No I manually added it using the following command.

Yes I do but I don't see the data being passed to the VM. So I need to

I am tiring to write up a howto on the process. Since I just got
everything working recently and am testing right now. Make sure you
have gluster 3.3 installed not gluster 3.2.5 that comes with F17. I
installed from http://repos.fedorapeople.org/repos/kkeithle/glusterfs/ .

Yes, running 3.3.

Yes, it was out of 8 boxes I was looking at the vdsm logs on box 1 and
ovirt-engine tried to start gluster on a different box so I did not
see the vdsm log. Once I did, it was clear that gluster we not happy
about the directory being used for gluster in the past. To fix that I
just ran the following on all 8 of my hosts:

cd /export/ ;for i in `attr -lq .`; do setfattr -x trusted.$i .; done

I now have a happy gluster volume called share. Now I am lost as to
how to use that volume. Do I have to change the Default NFS storage
type? How do I get this bad boy mounted?
I spent 2 weeks tiring to get glusterfs working with no luck. However I
was able to get gluster nfs working. Here are the steps I needed to do.

1) I added the following option to the volume. Might only need the 1st
one but I have all 3 of them set on my working system.

a) nfs.nlm off
b) nfs.register-with-portmap on
c) nfs.addr-namelookup off
2) Mount the volume outside of ovirt. mount -t nfs
ipofonenode:/volumename /temp/share/name

3) chown -R 36.36 /temp/share/name.
4) umount /temp/share/name
5) Added a new NFS domain with the NFS Export Path: localhost:/volumename

I was then able to active the NFS based Data Center and add working VM's

Are there any docs on direct gluster?
No. I got close to getting it to work but I was having issues with
Fedora 17 crashing every 10 to 12 hours and that might have been why I
couldn't get that last 1%. I did pretty much the same steps to get
really close to getting the glusterfs structure to work.

1) Mount the volume outside of ovirt. mount -t nfs
ipofonenode:/volumename /temp/share/name or mount -t glusterfs
ipofonenode:/volumename /temp/share/name

2) chown -R 36.36 /temp/share/name
3) umount /temp/share/name
4) Added a new Postfix gluster fs domain with the Path of:
localhost:/volumename and the type of glusterfs.

It mounted fine but I couldn't get it to activate.

1) I added the following option to the volume. Might only need the

Problme I am running into is that I need to add -o

Hi Robert,
This really depends on your setup (devel' or yum installed).
There are several DB values which are encrypted during the installation which
you override
by plain text values. In most cases the engine tries to fallback, and use the
original value
it got despite the error. The question now you should answer, is if you have
any other issue.
If things seem to work well, than it's an issue of encrypting the relevant
values (if needed).
If you have other related issues, then setting these values to plain text
should use the fallback
and resolve the issue.

There doesn't seem to be any negitive effect other then making the log
hard to read. Is there any way to suppress the error?

Thanks

Robert, I do suggest that you try further to investigate the root cause
for this.
However, it is possible to modify the configuration not to log this
error - you should be able to define a log4j category at
$JBOSS_HOME/standalone/configuration/standalone.xml (under subsystem
xmlns=urn:jboss:domain:logging:1.1) in such a way that for
EncryptionUtils only FATAL messages will appear at the log (and still, I
suggest that you further try to investigate why this is happening in the
first place).

Robert - we can go to two approaches here with logging both require you
to define a log4j category for EncryptionUtils

First approach - as I suggested, move to FATAL - you will not see these
errors.
Second approach - move to DEBUG. I looked at the code, and saw that if
you define a category for EncryptionUtils with DEBUG level you will
also get a print of stacktrace, this may assist in understanding the
problem you're facing.

Yair,

I checked standalone.xml file and there is no section related to
EncyptionUtils nor was there a definition for engine.log I am guessing
that these are defined in a diff config file.

You should modify this file and add a category for EncryptionUtils -
look at how the category -

logger category=org.ovirt
 level name=INFO/
 handlers
 handler name=ENGINE_LOG/
 /handlers
 /logger

Is defined.
I don't see that at all. I am using CentOS 6.2 with
http://www.dreyou.org/ovirt/ Build 8.

Thanks
Robert

What you should do is add

logger category=org.ovirt.engine.core.engineencryptutils
   level name=FATAL/
 handlers
 handler name=ENGINE_LOG/
 /handlers
 /logger

Near the logger category for org.ovirt (I mean, as a sibling to that
element).
Pay attention that here i defined it for FATAL - you may wish to try it
with DEBUG to see the stacktrace.

sounds like we are missing a step to change the permissions on it to kvm?
shireesh/ayal/vijay - any thoughts on which point should we change the
permissions on the gluster volume to allow to use it in vdsm?
Should I put this into bugzilla? Anything specif you want in the bug

Please take a look at the following bugs:

Thanks, after modprobe softdog and restarting wdmd and sanlock I was able
to start the VM. Unfortunately my experiment with using nested VMs to fake
nodes didn't pan out (the guest-in-guest booted for a bit and then froze).

Is there a way to use pure qemu guests for testing (like in devstack)?
While I do have two systems that support hardware virtualization i cannot
reinstall either of them to use them as a host.

In ovirt-engine-3.1 I'm attempting to setup the base logical networks
and have run into 2 major issues.

Are you using cluster version 3.0 or 3.1?

I have been using 3.1 as it's the default. Is the different just the
API updates? All I could really find related to 3.0 vs 3.1 pertaining
to networking was this document
http://www.ovirt.org/wiki/Features/Design/Network/SetupNetworks

The first is I'm only seeing a Gateway field for the management
interface. When I went to create a network for VMs (on seperate
subnet) I did not see a place to specify gateway (see img
ovirt_network_missing_gateway.png). Right now my management port is
on a 100mbps network and the bridged devices live on a 1Gbps network
(net140 in cluster). Is there a reason the gateway would be missing?
I've attached ovirt_networks.png that shows all the interfaces on my
host.

Unfortunately, oVirt supports setting only the default gateway of the Host
(This is the field you saw in the management network).

We could theoretically use initscripts' static routing files, but that is left
for
future development.

So for now, is it then easier to just run all public interfaces
through the same subnet/gateway? The main reason to run management
via 100Mbps and everything else 1Gbps was that our campus is out of
IPs so we're attempting to conserve on the usage of gigabit IPs.

The second issue I'm having is creating a storage network. I created
2 logical networks , private0 and private1. I left the VM Network
unchecked on both as my assumption was that dicates if they can be
added to VMs. Since these are only for hosts to connect to the iSCSI
I didn't think that was necessary. When I set the IP information
(private_network0.png) and select Ok the save goes through but when I
edit the interface again the information is gone and the file
ifcfg-eth4 does not have IP information. This is what I looks like

DEVICE=eth4
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=none
HWADDR=00:1b:21:1d:33:f0
NM_CONTROLLED=no
MTU=9000
Don't edit the ifcfg-eth4 / ifcfg-eth5 file instead edit
ifcfg-logicnetworkname. Set that to static with a gateway. And that
won't get over written. However be warned Linux doesn't like having two
default gateway's. You might want to review
http://www.centos.org/docs/2/rhl-rg-en-7.2/ch-networkscripts.html and
use static routers.

Thanks
Robert

I didn't quite understand what you did here..
What I think you meant is:
1. You edited the network on a NIC, and provided static boot protocol
   with the parameters (ip, netmask).
2. After that when you clicked OK then the configuration was sent to
the Host, and in the Network Interfaces tab for the Host you could
see the IP in the Address column. On the host the ifcfg script for
this network had these fields set.
--- Assuming that no restart of Host or VDSM on Host was done ---
3. You edited the network again, didn't change anything, and clicked OK.
4. This time, the boot protocol info was gone from display ifcfg file
   on the Host.

Is this correct?

Also do you by any chance have the log files of ovirt (engine.log)/vdsm
(vdsm.log) with the flow that you did?

I'll try to clarify the steps I took a little better, sorry if it was
unclear before.

1. Create logical network in Cluster that was NOT a VM Network (my
assumption of how to setup a storage network)
2. Edit NIC on host, set boot protocol to static and provide
IP/Netmask, and select the logical network created in #1, check Save
network configuration
3. After clicking OK the corresponding ifcfg file on the node was
modified, but the values for IP/Netmask were missing. Also the values
did not appear in the network interface list, and were not shown when
going to that same interface and selecting Add/Edit again

That process did not involve a reboot of the host.

So in the host interface eth5 I set the following via web interface

Network: private1
Boot Protocol: Static
IP: 10.20.1.241
Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0
Check: Save network configuration

After the save the node's ifcfg-eth5 is touched (based on modified
date in ls -la) but this is all it contains
DEVICE=eth5
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=none
HWADDR=00:1b:21:1d:33:f1
NM_CONTROLLED=no
MTU=9000

As far as I can tell the only setting from ovirt-engine that made it
to that file was the MTU setting defined when creating the logical
network for the cluster.

Is my process somehow wrong or am I missing a step? I've done this
with the node being in both Up status and Maintenance, same
results.

As a test I manually updated the IP/Netmask of ifcfg-eth4 and it shows
up in the web interface with the correct information however any
changes via the web interface will remove the IPADDR and NETMASK
lines.

I also attached image cluster_logical_networks.png that shows the all
the logical networks

You might want to disable InstallVds and restart the engine. Since it
will attempt to install the packages from yum and that could cause an
issue if you are installing hand built RPM.

psql engine -U postgres -c UPDATE vdc_options set option_value =
'false' where option_name = 'InstallVds'

service ovirt-engine restart

Actually after seeing the /tmp/vds_bootstrap.64713.log bit in that mail I

The installation seems to succeed now and the Host is displayed as Up. I
got stuck almost 5 minutes in the state Reboot though even though the
node was up in a few seconds after the reboot. What exactly is causing this
long delay? Is the engine trying to contact vdsm or is the engine waiting
for vdsm to connect to the engine?

Re: [Users] Logical Netowrk - ovirtmgmt

2012-06-14 Thread Robert Middleswarth
I just looked at this time it doesn't look like you can detach the
logical network to redefine it as a logic network. With that said. I
am willing to bet that if you were to manually define the network before
setting up the engine it would likely work. It also looks like if you
went and shutdown everything edit the networks manually and defined it
to a vlan that would work as well. The key is to have the ovirt
shutdown well making the change.

Thanks
Robert

No, you choose storage type when defining the data center, and host
can be only in 1 DC at a given time

What if I have a bunch of NFS storage systems and what to move to iScsi?
Does that mean I have to move everything over in one fell swoop?
Having to choose either NFS or iSCSI for the entire datacenter seems
awfully restrictive.

in addition to dafna's suggestions for this.
allowing to use multiple storage types from same clusters/DC is on the

[Users] Windows install / activation issues.

2012-06-10 Thread Robert Middleswarth
I am slowly doing my stage two testing now. I have been finding very
few issues that is pretty good since 3.1 is just going into feature
freeze but I did find one that is kinda a show stopper and weird for
me. I installed windows 2003 using my Dell CD on my Dell Hardware. On
both ESXi and Xen Server windows authorization fine because the
installer sees the Dell bias in some way but under oVirt it doesn't.
From my research it looks like the feature is called SLP. Is there
anyway to pass the Dell SLP info to the installer like it is done under
both Xen and Vmware ESXi? I assume it would be a libVirt option of some
kind I just can't find it.

Re: [Users] Anyone started working on the documentation for GlusterFS and Ovirt 3.1 yet?

Hi Robert,

afaik, there is no official documentation that show's how to work
with glusterFS using oVirt since its too new and we are in early integration
phases (shireesh, correct me if i'm wrong).

That is why I asked is anyone has started working on the doc's

I would start by browsing tohttp://www.gluster.org/ and read about the
underlying technology (glusterFS, admin guide is good place to start).
Read though there doc's but wasn't sure how much needed to be done using
native glusterfs tools and how much is done using ovirt engine because
of the fact it was recently integrated means there are still likely
holes in the process.

as for tips and hints, I will describe what you need in general (very
high-level):

- cluster and data-center - edit cluster and set the gluster check box
- host side (vds):
   * install vdsm-gluster package
   * install all gluster-related packages
   * make sure all gluster related services are fully operational
Didn't see vdsm-gluster when I built the nodes but when I looked for the
package it was there. Already had all the glusterfs services running.

- create new volume (volume is a collection of bricks which represent a
collection of export domains):
   * allocate storage space on your host
   * make sure this space is exposed via export (NFS) directory
   * create new volume\bricks
This is where I am confused. glusterfs supports 3 methods of exposing
the cluster. Is ovirt using the NFS or the native(fs) method? If it is
NFS why the interface for bricks? Wouldn't you just create a giant nfs
share? This is the area I am most confused with and looking for hints on.

Robert

 Hi Robert,

Yep I know. I tired to work around the issue by creating a fedora VM
for people to VNC to however spicec aborts with the following error.

 1339005616 INFO [11312:11312] Application::main: starting 0.8.3
1339005616 ERROR [11312:11312] main: unhandled exception: Unsupported

That suggest to me that spicec wants a real frame buffer not a virtual
one. I am really open to suggestions for windows users to be able to
console to a VM? That is why I am looking for a script something that
can be run external of ovirt that can set a password and give them a URL
that can be used by VNC or virt-viewer?
 1 b) the XPI plugin is linux-only (and effectively firefox-only but I
think that patches for Chrome/Webkit compatibility will be welcome)
Works fine under Fedora inside a virtualbox VM. So I am guessing it
works fine in a bare metal install.
 2) for Ubuntu, you'd need at least first of these two geting merged in
Debian and then wait half year for Ubuntu to leech it:
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=667565
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=668284
(the second is technically not necessary but given that spicec is being
discontinued and all the development takes there...)

Alternatively, you could get spice-xpi for ubuntu from PPAs.
Please send me a link to a working PPA for ubuntu? I have tried
 https://launchpad.net/~jasonbrooks/+archive/ppa under both 11.10 and
12.04 under both 32bit and 64bit Versions and both just error out. Sent
the Aurthur an email reporting the issue and never heard back.

Trust me I have read up on the issue unless everyone in my group wants
to keep a fedora VM to access the console on there system there doesn't
seem to be a way for an admin to console to a VM currently. This will
change at some point but until there is a workaround available for
windows users or users of other distro's then Red Hat based ones oVirt
 isn't really usable.

That is why I am asking if anyone has created a script I can use.
Something that will allow me to run select a VM and have it assign
assign a password and display a URL that can be copied / pasted into
either virt-viewer or vnc. I have seen piece of it in the various
lists. Suggesting that something could be done using the rest, sdk, or
 cli api's.

I have seen some info on getting VNC to work but nothing organized and I
would lose all spice support if I did but getting VNC to work is a
possibility's. Although my preference would be something still using
spice so spice-xpi would continue to work and over time the need for the
hack would reduce and more OS's gain support.

So that brings me back to my original question. Does anyone have a
scripts or at least a string of commands I can tie together to spit out
a URL I can use to connect using Virt-Viewer preferred or something for VNC.

 Thanks

Re: [Users] glusterfs and ovirt

Simple thing to try. Create a URL something like
nfs.glusterfs.example.com and add a host entry on each system pointing
to the ip of the system. Not 127.0.0.1 but the IP other stations would
use to talk to the system. That would point every system to there local
client.

It works =)

In this mount:

/bin/mount -t nfs 127.0.0.1:/share/ tmp/tmpgtsoetsk is successful.

To use glusterfs in overt to execute a commandL

Mount -t glusterfs -o log-level = WARNING, log-file =

I can prescribe it in vdsm that it was carried out instead of
/bin/mount-o soft, timeo = 600, retrans = 6, nosharecache, vers = 3 -t
nfs 127.0.0.1:/share/tmp/tmpgtsOetsk
