[ovirt-users] Re: New to oVirt - HE and Metric Store Question

2020-12-28 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
I send it unfinished.
Another one from Red Hat's Self-Hosted Engine Recommendations:

A storage domain dedicated to the Manager virtual machine is created during
self-hosted engine deployment. Do not use this storage domain for any other
virtual machines.

If it's a fresh deployment , it's easier to create a new LUN/NFS share/Gluster
Volume and use that.
The following RH solution describes how to move HostedEngine to another storage
domain: https://access.redhat.com/solutions/2998291

In summary: Migrate the VMs to another storage domain, set 1 host in
maintenance , create a backup and then restore that backup using the new
storage domain and the node that was in maintenance...

As I have never restored my oVirt Manager , I can't provide more help.

[ovirt-users] Re: New to oVirt - HE and Metric Store Question

2020-12-28 Thread Strahil Nikolov via Users
I can't recall the exact issue that was reported in the mailing list, but I
remember that the user had to power off the engine and the VMs... the Devs can
clearly indicate the risks of running the HostedEngine with other VMs on the
same storage domain.

Based on Red Hat's RHV documentation the following warning is clearly
indicating some of the reasons:

Creating additional data storage domains in the same data center as the
self-hosted engine storage domain is highly recommended. If you deploy the
self-hosted engine in a data center with only one active data storage domain,
and that storage domain is corrupted, you will not be able to add new storage
domains or remove the corrupted storage domain; you will have to redeploy the
self-hosted engine.

Another one from Red Hat's Self-Hosted Engine Recommendations:

Is this the same case as in the thread:

[ovirt-users] "Add NFS storage domain", "status": "FAILED",

? If so, let's continue the discussion there.

2020-04-02 Thread Mark Steele
As a followup - is it possible to move the hosted-engine to another HV
manually? Meaning we shutdown the hosted-engine VM, and copy it's XML to
another HV and fire it up over there where libvirt IS running?

If that is possible, where do we find the live / running XML files on a
host?

That's why I asked about the update.
The update process renews somee certificates, and as it wasn't updated for a
long time - now you have issues.

I hope someone from the community can assist you.

My recommendations:
1. Check on all hosts all vdsm.log and extract the VMs' xml
2. Get all network's xml

More information:

- the host that ovirt hosted engine is running on is not running libvirtd.
When we attempt to start it, it complains about expired certs and fails.
Any ideas on this new development?

In my setup, I have 2 AMD hosts + an Intel-based arbiter.
Actually , if you separate them in 2 different clusters (1 for intel + 1 for
amd) - you can run VMs on any of the nodes.

So you can host the arbiter as a VM or get a 3rd machine for it. I think a VM
(with decent storage) is enough for the arbiter , but you should test prior
putting the oVirt setup into production.

[ovirt-users] Re: New to oVirt - Cluster questions

2019-06-17 Thread Strahil
Hi Adam,

The arbiter holds only metadata for gluster to be able to resolve any potential
split brains. It can run on another host (not in the 2 replicas) and the only
requirements are:
1. Low network lattency - you don't want to put it in Chona, unless your
replica servers are also there :)
With remote arbiter - the lattency will affect you only when 1 of the replicas
is down.
2. Fast storage that can easily create the files' inodes. I would preffer a SSD
, but even high speed rotational disks are OK

In other words, you should create gluster bricks like this one:
server1:/gluster_bricks/myvolume/brick1
server2:/gluster_bricks/myvolume/brick1
arbiter:/gluster_bricks/myvolume/arbiter_brick

In this case, if a node dies - the other node + arbiter will have quorum and
will serve any I/O for oVirt.
The arbiter_brick does not require much space, as only metadata will be written.

Actually with hyperconverged setup you have 2 clusters on the same nodes -
storage (gluster) & oVirt (virtualization).

[ovirt-users] Re: New to oVirt - Cluster questions

2019-06-15 Thread Strahil
Hi Adam,

The problem with replica2 volumes (1 copy on 1 server , 1 on the other) is that
you may be in split-brain easily.
Thus ovirt accepts only replica3 or replica2 arbiter1.

If you have a small system with an SSD , then you can create your arbiter
there. My lab has a Lenovo M-series for an arbiter.

Guster (not talking about Glusterd2 here) will very soon support another
feature called remote arbiter which will allow you to bring an arbiter in the
cloud (or any other remote destination) and the latency will not cause any
issues.

Keep in mind that due to the nature of linux bonding/teaming it's better to
have high bandwidth NIC vs multiple small ones ( 2 NICs x 10 gbit/s brings
better performance vs 20 NICs x 1 gbit/s ).

So, you need a 3rd node - no matter locally (regular arbiter or a full replica
) or remotely (remote arbiter).

Of course for testing, you can still setup gluster (manually) in a replica2
volumes and use oVirt ability to use POSIX-compliant FS . This type of setup
will not be supported and you won't be able to use the UI but you can still
explore the oVirt project.

2019-06-15 Thread Jayme
Ovirt can be installed on as little as one node ,but for a proper HA setup
you should have at least three nodes.

Hci uses gluster and needs a replica 3 or replica 3 arbiter 1
configuration. With arbiter you need less storage as it only holds
metadata so you might be able to put a third server in your mix without
having to spend a lot on storage for it.

I would not attempt HA with anything less than three severs unless you are
using external storage such as nfs.

question regarding the number of nodes needed for a cluster. My main end goal,
is to have HA, where I can have live migrations.I currently have 2 nodes (2

2019-05-13 Thread Derek Atkins
Hi,

When I installed oVirt (on CentOS 7.2 using 4.0.x in October 2016) I
used the following sets of instructions:

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en/red-hat-virtualization/4.0/paged/self-hosted-engine-guide/chapter-2-deploying-self-hosted-engine
http://www.ovirt.org/documentation/how-to/hosted-engine/#fresh-install

I did take a few trials to get it right.

I made sure I had CentOS fully installed, set up my local file systems,
NFS (for storage domains), permissions, networking, etc. Then I
installed and did the hosted-engine --deploy

Then in the hosted engine VM I also installed CentOS manually and
installed the hosted engine itself.

It did take me a while to get it all right. I did need to run
hosted-engine-cleanup.sh at least once. :)

But it's been very solid for almost 3 years now. I'm due for another
upgrade soon.

2019-05-10 Thread Slobodan Stevanovic
I am currently at the point that I am thinking on giving up and start playing
more with Proxmox.
Do you guys have any suggestion on what instructions I should use? I just want
to setup something to get a better idea on how everything works before I go to
more advance things.
Currently, downloading Ovirt Node from https://www.ovirt.org/download/node.html
and running Cockpit does not work form me.

2019-05-10 Thread Dmitry Filonov
Absolutely. It is Rock solid. It is great idea and definitely way to go
when you are comfortable with the technology. But for the new user it might
be confusing at first. And in general it adds a bit of complexity that you
don't need.
Especially if you do have that extra piece of hardware to use for it in the
beginning.

Not like huge issues, but something like you put host in to global HA
maintenance, then update hosted engine, reboot and... and it doesn't start.

Not a big deal, but for a new user it might be a bit confusing.
So am with Michael, if you just starting using oVirt then it's better to
have standalone engine et first. And then migrate it over into hosted
environment when you are comfortable to do so.
