What is the longevity status of cockpit-machines-ovirt ?
I understand it was removed from automatically being in node, due to perceived 
redundancy.

But is the software package itself going away and/or not going to be usable in 
the future?

if you mean: 
"Can I use oVirt Node for running VMs without using oVirt Engine?" 
then yes, you can. 

oVirt Node is a CentOS Linux derivative and as such you can use virt-manager 
from your laptop to connect to it and manage VMs there as if it was a normal 
CentOS. 
You can also use cockpit for creating local VMs. 

If you mean: 
"Can I create VMs from oVirt Node and also manage them from the engine?" 
the short answer is no. 
The long answer is: you can still try using cockpit-machines-ovirt [

[ovirt-users] adminstration portal wont complete load, looping

I have an odd situation:
When I go to
https://ovengine/ovirt-engine/webadmin/?locale=en_US

after authentication passes...
it shows the top banner of

oVirt OPEN VIRTUALIZATION MANAGER

and the


Loading ...


in the center. but never gets past that. Any suggestions on how I could 
investigate and fix this?

background:
I recently updated certs to be signed wildcard certs, but this broke consoles 
somehow.
So I restored the original certs, and restarted things... but got stuck with 
this.


Interestingly, the VM portal loads fine.  But not the admin portal.

I just discovered that some windows VMs of ours needed guest additions, and 
looked for the right way to handle it for ovirt.

OH. I think you are implying perhaps that modern windows VMs automatically have 
hooks for virtual hosting?
Sad to say, these are ... "older"*cough*   Vms.

Might I suggest that you folks revisit the issue of what to do with the 
"guest tools iso". Since supposedly they are,

"provided by the oVirt-guest-tools-iso package installed as a dependency
 to the oVirt Engine. This ISO file is located in
 /usr/share/oVirt-guest-tools-iso/oVirt-tools-setup.iso on the system 
 on which the oVirt Engine is installed."

I updated the filels in /etc/pki/vdsm/libvirt-spice, and the debug output from 
remote-viewer changes.. but its not entirely happy.

I put the cert itself, in server-cert.pem
I put the key in server-key.pem
I put the bundle file from godaddy, which they call "gd_bundle-g2-g1", in 
"ca-cert.pem"

but its still complaining about error in chain?

Ive been updating a whoole bunch of SSL-requiring systems this month, and 
notice that one or two systems like a different order to the multiple-cert-CA 
stack.
Does libvirt-spice require yet another, different stacking?

Can you tell me what needs to be in each, and in what order, please? :-/

Thanks for the initial start, Strahil,

my desktop is windows. but I took apart the console.vv file, and these are my 
findings:

in the console.vv file, there is a valid CA cert, which is for the signing CA 
for our valid wildcard SSL cert.

However, when I connected to the target host, on the tls-port, i noted that it 
is still using the original self-signed CA, generated by ovirt-engine for the 
host.
Digging with lsof says that the process is qemu-kvm
Looking at command line, that has
  x509-dir=/etc/pki/vdsm/libvirt-spice

So...


I guess I need to update server.key server.cert and ca-cert in there?

except there's a whoole lot of '*key.pem' files under  the /etc/pki directory 
tree.
Suggestions on which is best to update?
For example, there is also

/etc/pki/vdsm/keys/vdsmkey.pem

I assume you are working on linux (for windows you will need to ssh to a linux 
box or even one ofthe Hosts).

When you download the 'console.vv' file for Spice connection - you will have to 
note several stuff:

- host
- tls-port (not the plain 'port=' !!! )
- ca

Process the CA and replace the '\n' with new lines .

Then you can run:
openssl s_client -connect : -CAfile  
-showcerts

Then you can inspect the certificate chain.
I would then grep for the strings from openssl in the engine.

In my case I find these containing the line with the 'issuer':

/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/websocket-proxy.cer
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/apache.cer
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/reports.cer
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/imageio-proxy.cer
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/ovn-ndb.cer
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/ovn-sdb.cer
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/ovirt-provider-ovn.cer

Chrome didnt want to talk AT ALL to ovirt with self-signed certs (Because  HSTS 
is enabled)

So I installed signed wildcard certs to the engine, and the nodes, following

and chrome is happy now... except that suddenly, consoles refuse to work. and 
there are no useful errors that I see, other than

from the remote viewer app.

I see someone not too long ago had the exact same problem, in

but.. no answer was given to him?

I have for many years used gluster because..well. 3 nodes.. and so long as I 
can pull a drive out.. I can get my data.. and with three copies.. I have much 
higher chance of getting it. 





Downsides to gluster: Slower (its my home..meh... and I have SSD to avoid MTBF 
issues ) and with VDO.. and thin provisioning.. not had issue. 





BUT gluster seems to be falling out of favor. Especially as I move towards 
OCP. 





So.. CEPH. I have one SSD in each of the three servers. so I have some space to 
play. 





I googled around.. and find no clean deployment notes and guides on CEPH + 
oVirt.

relly need some serious updating.

For example, they do also mention virtio-win.vfd  but say that gets added 
to "The default storage domain", which you folks just said is deprecated.
So there needs to be a non-deprecated way spelled out of getting these things?


Im not sure where to get that vfd now either.
I successfully did a "yum install virtio-win" ...
however, the contents of the package do not seem to contain "virtio-win.vfd". 

Ahhh..  again, the documentation needs to be updated. There is no 
"virtio-win.vfd", in the package, but there IS

/usr/share/virtio-win/virtio-win_amd64.vfd

The Windows VM guest agents and drivers are a part of the virtio-win
package, you can install the RPM which will contain the ISO or download the
iso directly from:

The iso contains an exe that will install all that is needed, just make
sure to mark option->install ovirt guest agent

arbiter nodes?

You can use   a distributed replicated volume of type 'replica 3 arbiter 1'.
For example, NodeA  and NodeB are contain  replica  set 1  with NodeC as their 
arbiter and NodeD and NodeE as the second  replica set  2  with NodeC as thir 
arbiter also.

In such case you got only 2 copies of a single shard, but you are fully 
"supported" from gluster perspective.
Also, all  hosts can have an external storage like  your  NAS.

So... does that happen automatically?

ie: install ovirt "node" image, then tell ovirt hosted engine "go add that node 
to cluster", and it automagically gets done?

Your other hosts that aren’t participating in gluster storage would just
mount the gluster storage domains.

using ovirt 4.4.1 to attempt to import from VMware, I have a problem with older 
SSL ciphers:

libvirt.libvirtError: internal error: curl_easy_perform() returned an error: 
SSL connect error (35) : error:1425F102:SSL 
routines:ssl_choose_client_version:unsupported protocol


where can I tell it "shut up and take the data"?

I found on the web a generic openssl reference that supposedly I should be able 
to edit
/etc/pki/tls/openssl.cnf

and add
MinProtocol=TLSv1.0
CipherString = DEFAULT@SECLEVEL=1


but that didnt help. its still complaining about the SSL protocol.

follow up info on this:

I tried another import, with another file, but this time, uploaded to an NFS 
directory...
the NFS directory that is ALSO used for our ISO storage domain.
So it is always automatically mounted, on all nodes, under /rhel/whatever


Once again, the ovirt 4.3 node recognized the file, but ovirt 4.4.1 did not 
show ANY file in the same directory.
Cant be a directory permissions problem there. So it seems like initial ova 
file recognition is broken in 4.4.1 somehow.

suggestion #2:
I think that in ovirt 4.3, default perms on /root were okay. but in 4.4 a 
non-root user is used, so it fails to READ THE DIRECTORY.
This error should really be passed up to the GUI.

I'm having problems importing OVA exports from vmware 4, into ovirt 4.3

I've read that basically, this is a known issue and that ovirt 4.4 improves the 
import situation greatly.
But I'd like to be able to prove it helps us, before comitting to large 
undertakings. 

Is it going to be doable to run a single node ovirt cluster as  a VM inside 
another one?
Or do I need to run it on bare metal?

[ovirt-users] error importing from VMware, and workaround

more details in my saga of problem imports from VMware/vsphere to ovirt  (4.4.1 
node)

I had done a couple successfully, but my next one kept failing. Couldnt figure 
out why.

The only things resembling an error in the import logs, were this:
(trimmed a bit)

"rpm -e vmware-tools-nox vmware-tools-common"

I thought to myself.. nah, that couldnt be it. import failed.. because you 
couldnt REMOVE a package??? that would be dumb.
but that was the problem.

I started up the old vm, did a

yum remove 'vmware-*'

reexported from VMware, and then imported...
and this time, the import worked.

Please fix that behaviour.

well, this was related to my thread here a day or two ago, about "where are the 
error logs for import?" I give more details there.

The resulting logs are of no use.
ovirt 4.3 fails on direct import from Vsphere. and it fails on importing a 
manually exported OVA file from vsphere.
With no feedback as to where the failure is caused.

Therefore, I have concluded my only option is to try out 4.4 somehow.
Which is difficult since I dont have centos 8 running on bare metal anywhere.

good news and bad news and more good news on my OVA import front. Devs are 
especially encouraged to read to the end :)


Initial good news is, I managed to successfully upgrade ONE of my "node"s in my 
4.3 cluster to 4.4.1


The bad news is:
doing the exact same thing as before; copying the .OVA file to /root on a node, 
and attempting an import, doesnt work.
and it fails even harder this time.
It doesnt just pretend to load it and die at 99%.
It fails to allow me to load it at all, with no visible errors?



on the native 4.3 node, I do (import OVA)
I put in the path as "/root"
I press the load button, and it shows me the OVA file in there.

BUT. on the 4.4.1 node running in the 4.3 cluster.
I put in the path as "/root"
I press the load button...
and it shows me NO FILES.


perms on /root on both nodes, is
dr-xr-x--- root root

so its not a perms issue.
and its literally the same file and name.
I just scp'd the file from the 4.4.1 node, to the 4.3 node.

I was going to ask for suggestions, but then, one whacky thing I came up with 
myself. get the dialog to recognize the file, for the 4.3 node.
So then it shows up in the first dialog.
But then CHANGE the selected node to the 4.4.1 node, before pressing okay??
It takes a bug to fight a bug??. lol.

but it started the import on the actual 4.4.1 node...and still failed.

But I figured out that the important file is NOT in the engine VM, but in the 
node that is selected as involved in the import.

So in /var/log/vdsm/import/X, I found a few errors.


juggled things around...
Forced "preallocate" instead of "thin provision".
and
it worked? !

yay.


So, suggestion to devs to test more on the local import, rather than just the 
"import domain" thing.

suggestion #2:
I think that in ovirt 4.3, default perms on /root were okay. but in 4.4 a 
non-root user is used, so it fails to READ THE DIRECTORY.
This error should really be passed up to the GUI.

[ovirt-users] how to get ovirt 4.3 documentation?

I find it odd that the ovirt website allows to see older version RELEASE 
NOTES...
but doesnt seem to give links to general documentation for older versions.
For example, if you read 

https://www.ovirt.org/release/4.3.10/
it says, 

"For complete installation, administration, and usage instructions, see the 
oVirt Documentation."

but that links to the general docs page at https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/

It does NOT link to any ovirt 4.3 docs, which is what I actually need

had to rename the volume back to the value of the msdUUID. not the spUUID, 
which I already tried.

If its fatal to rename that volume...
would be nice to have it lockedout or something?

Im pretty new to ovirt. Trying to upgrade an old install from 4.1 to 4.3

on the way, I browsed into the Storage area, in one of the nodes.

Noticed under the "Volume groups", area that the volumes were named after some 
loong ID string.

Saw there was a "rename" button.
figured it would be just like renaming a VM. thigns would just get auto 
adjusted.

but after I renamed to something in english, the cluster is freaking out, 

"cant find master domain: u'spUUID=xxx, msdUUID=xxx'  "

and under Storage: Storage DOmains, the  Data(Master)  is down.
How can I recover from this ASAP?  :-(

Okay, since you asked:

(note: this is in node 4.3.10. but hosted-engine is 4.2
 I'd LIKE to upgrade it. but the upgrade process is broken. 
 thats a whole nuther story, aobut how postgresql10 doesnt show up even though 
its required for
  yum update 'ovirt*setup'

1. go to individual node UI.
2. Click on Storage
3. Look at the right-sdie aera for "Volume Groups". click on the one that is 
for your master data volume
4. Click on the Rename button on the top right. Pick something sensible
5. wait a while, and eventually your cluster logs will freak out.

Happily for me, since our VMs are very lightly loaded, this did not immediately 
cause a crash.
But the cluster freaked out.. engine log spewed those errors after a while.. 
and in the cluster(engine) UI, it eventually showed 
Storage->Domains
as offline.
(well it shows the master as offline, and it didnt even know about the other 
ones any more, until I renamed it back)

Did you rename the volume from within oVirt UI?

Can you give clear reproduction instructions, how to break your storage domain
by renaming a volume?

It turns out the magic was that I needed to upgrade the version compat number 
for the storage domain to 4.3, after I upgraded the cluster version to 4.3

Once I did that, I got a maintenance button, and then can edit the thing.

I did manage to dig that one up. but.. doesnt seem to have any specifics either

It just contains an xml description of the OVA info.
Zero status output good or bad.

If it makes any difference, the OVA was generated by VMware 4.x

The GUI status mentions that things seem to go along fairly happily.. 
it mentions that it creates a disk for it
but then eventually just says

"failed to import VM x into datacenter Default"
with zero explanation.

Isnt there a log file or something I can check, somewhere, to find out what the 
problem is?

[ovirt-users] change lun for hosted_engine use?

I currently have a self-hosted engine, running in a dedicated ISCSI storage 
domain.
I'd like to change the backend hardware for the storage.

i think there's some longwinded and complicated method of shutting down the 
engine, backup, creating a NEW one, restore, and whoknowswhat.

I was wondering though, if maybe there's a way to just add an iscsi lun to the 
storage domain, and tell ovirt, "Hey, move the stuff over to that other lun"
?

Ive added the new lun already :) havent found a reference to move the files' 
residence though.

If it helps, my end goal is to remove that lun completely.

To someone who has never dealt with the backup/restore stuff.. not to mention 
taking over a previously setup cluster.. it is exceedingly onerous :(

Those docs seem geared primarily towards doing backup and restore of a 
hosted_engine where nothing is changing.
it would be really helpful to have docs where the goal is changing the 
environment for the hosted engine.

At one point I stumbled across a reference to that sort of thing, but 
unfortunately I cannot find it again.

I managed to successfully do the migration of the iscsi storage domain for my 
hosted engine, from one host/target to another.
For posterity, here's how it went for me, skipping a few failed attempts.
Sorry for formatting


Note #1: oVirt 4.3, using the ovirt supplied "node" images for hosts

Note #2: this takes a really.. REALLY.. long time.  over an hour. possibly 
closer to 2 hours.


My Steps:
==

*. make sure that the hosted_engine vm is NOT running on node #1 of my cluster, 
so I have a fallback if I need it

*. do a "engine-backup" from the hosted_engine vm command line, and scp the 
resulting 7mb file out to node #1 of my cluster

*. create a new iscsi LUN for a new hosted_engine storage domain

*. put the cluster in global maint, with
hosted-engine  --set-maintenance --mode=global

*. shut down the hosted engine VM

*. on node #1, do   
ovirt-hosted-engine-cleanup

*. on node #1, 
systemctl enable firewalld; systemctl start firewalld

   and then doublecheck that
firewalld --list-services

   showed all the good things, including ssh and cockpit


*. on node #1, 
   ovirt-hosted-engine-setup 
--restore-from-file=ovirt-engine-backup=ovirt-engine-backup-x


   *** note: NOT engine-backup --mode=restore after the fact.
I'm glad I happened to stumble on this feature. I think.




*. Press return a lot. Occasionally actually putting in specifics of things.

  - Side quest: Since I had no idea how I was supposed to set up the new iSCSI 
storage domain, I chose the option for

  Pause the execution after adding this host to the engine?
  You will be able to iteratively connect to the restored engine.. 
  blahblah

Turns out, this was NOT needed. but I got to learn a few things. such as, 
the install process RENAMES any existing
storage domain called "hosted_storage" to "hosted_storage_old_xx"
 So, this may have a "point of no return" point


*. Wait. 
A LOT
  output said something about wait until VM gets into run state. or maybe 
it was
   TASK [ovirt.engine-setup : Make sure `ovirt-engine` service is running]
This took something like 10 minute or more, while giving ZERO feedback to 
me.
I wondered if it had locked up or somthing, and was tempted to kill it, but 
instead, I eventually left for lunch.
Good thing.



*. notice that the process creates a TEMPORARY "external engine" VM.. that is 
maybe stored on host local disks or something? I dont know details. 
but this is what allowed me to connect in via browser and check out how 
things looked, when it prompted me that I could.

*. When I was ready, remove the trigger file /tmp/somethingsomething (via a 
separate window ssh session)


*. Answer a bunch more text prompts about what iSCSI host I want to connect to, 
and then which target to use, and then which lun.
   Finally, it got around to creating the new storage domain for hosted engine, 
on the new LUN.


  *** Fun fact ***. It just gives you lun sizes. It does not give you ACTUAL 
lun numbers for the target you select to use.
Specifically, it showed me my "lun #2" as MENU CHOICE #1.
So make sure you make all your luns slightly different sizes!
  
Also, it has NO AWARENESS of EXISTING STORAGE DOMAINS. In fact, it silently 
overwrote a new storage domain I had called "hosted_storage",
after I noticed that the prior one had been renamed

A long. time.


I am happy to say that eventually, it actually finished up what it was doing.
It then informed me that I had to go to each of the other hosts (through the 
hosted engine GUI) and individually
1. put the host in maintenance mode
2. choose  Installation  -> Reinstall
AND manually reenable the Hosted engine install, for those hosts that I 
want it on again.


I am happy to report that this went smoothly.

Those docs seem geared primarily towards doing backup and restore of a

it would be really helpful to have docs where the goal is changing the 
environment for the hosted engine.

yes I am testing small writes. "oltp workload" means, simulation of OLTP 
database access.

You asked me to test the speed of iscsi from another host, which is very 
reasonable. So here are the results,
run from another node in the ovirt cluster.
Setup is using:

 - exact same vg device, exported via iscsi
 - mounted directly into another physical host running centos 7, rather than a 
VM running on it
 -   literaly the same filesystem, again, mounted noatime

I ran the same oltp workload. this setup gives the following results over 2 
runs.

Agreed but you want a virtio-blk device, not SG_IO; direct LUN with SG_IO

I'm trying to get optimal iscsi performance. We're a heavy iscsi shop, with 10g 
net.

I'mm experimenting with SSDs, and the performance in ovirt is way, way less 
than I would have hoped. 
More than an order of magnitude slower.

here's a datapoint.
Im running filebench, with the OLTP workload.
First, i run it on one of the hosts, that has an SSD directly attached.
create an xfs filesystem (created on a vg "device" on top of the SSD), mount it 
with noatime, and run the benchmark.


37166: 74.084: IO Summary: 3746362 ops, 62421.629 ops/s, (31053/31049 r/w), 
123.6mb/s,161us cpu/op,   1.1ms latency


I then unmount it, and make the exact same device an iscsi target, and create a 
storage domain with it.
I then create a disk for a VM running *on the same host*, and run the benchmark.


The same thing: filebench, oltp workload, xfs filesystem, noatime.


13329: 91.728: IO Summary: 153548 ops, 2520.561 ops/s, (1265/1243 r/w),   
4.9mb/s,289us cpu/op,  88.4ms latency


62,000 ops/s vs 2500 ops/s.

Someone might be tempted to say, "try making the device directly available, AS 
a device, to the VM".
Unfortunately,this is not an option.
My goal is specifically to put together a new, high performing storage domain, 
that I can use as database devices in VMs.

I'm not expecting the same 62,000 ops/second.
but I was expecting at *least* 5,000. Ideally more like 10,000.

Thank you for the analysis. I have some further comments:

First off, filebench pre-writes the files before doing oltp benchmarks, so I 
dont think the thin provisioning is at play here.
I will double check this, but if you dont hear otherwise, please presume that 
is the case :)

Secondly, I am surprised at  your recommendation to use virtio instead of 
virtio-scsi. since the writeup for virtio-scsi claims it has equivalent 
performance in general, and adds better scaling

As far as your suggestion for using multiple disks for scaling higher:
We are using an SSD. Isnt the whole advantage of using SSD drives, that you can 
get the IOP/s performance of 10 drives, out of a single drive?
We certainly get that using it natively, outside of a VM.
SO it would be nice to see performance approaching that within an ovirt VM.

This is the most flexible option oVirt has, but not the default.

Known issue with such a disk is possible pausing of the VM when the
disk becomes full,
if oVirt cannot extend the underlying logical volume fast enough. It
can be mitigated by
using  larger chunks in vdsm.

We recommend these settings if you are going to use VMs with heavy I/O
with thin disks:

# space before a thin provisioned block volume is extended. Use lower

volume_utilization_chunk_mb = 4096


With this configuration, when free space on the disk is 1 GiB, oVirt will extend
the disk by 4 GiB. So your disk may be up to 5 GiB larger than the used space,
but if the VM is writing data very fast, the chance of pausing is reduced.

If you want to reduce the chance of pausing your database in the most busy times
to zero, using a preallocated disk is the way.

In oVirt 4.4. you can check this option when creating a disk:

[x] Enable Incremental Backup

With:

Allocation Policy: [Preallocated]

You will get a preallocated disk in the specified size, using qcow2
format. This gives
you both the option to use incremental backup, faster disk operations
in oVirt (since
qemu-img does not need to read the entire disk), and avoids the
pausing issue. It may also
defeat thin provisioning, but if your backend storage supports thin
provisioning anyway
it does not matter.

To get best performance for database use case preallocated volume
should be better.

Im in the middle of a priority issue right now, so cant take time out to rerun 
the bench, but...
Usually in that kind of situation, if you dont turn on sync-to-disk on every 
write, you get benchmarks that are artificially HIGH.
Forcing O_DIRECT slows throughput down.
Dont you think the results are bad enough already? :-}

At first glance it appears that the filebench OLTP workload does not use
O_DIRECT, so this isn't a measurement of pure disk I/O performance:

that bypasses the page cache using O_DIRECT.

The fio setting is direct=1.

[ovirt-users] best way to have storage vlan available to host AND vms?

I'm trying to allow a particular iSCSI VLAN to be available to all hosts.. but 
also to a few select VMs.

Im finding this challenging, since prior to now, I did host iSCSI config on the 
host-local level.
i used the cockpit GUI to create a "VLAN" entity, assigned it to an interface, 
and then configured an IP address.

But when I attempt to create a "network"(/aka VLAN) entity from the main 
hosted-engine level.. it seems to conflict with prior host-local created ones.

and when I remove the host-local entries...
I no longer seem to have a way in the GUI to create IP addresses for the host, 
from host cockpit?
It recognises that the entity exists, but put it in the "unmanaged" section.

So.. how can I handle this best?

AH, I cant believe I didn't notice that before!

yup, in the engine GUI, under...


  Hosts -> (specific host, click on it)
 Network Interfaces  -> [Setup Host Networks ]


and then AFTER I have dragged the desired new network/VLAN over to a specific 
interface...
Then a little pencil icon appears on it, and I get to set up IP address, etc.

Not quite done.

How do I then assign a host-level IP address in the VLAN?
I did mention i need it for both VM use, and host level use.

This should be straightforward from within engine gui. No need to mess with
cockpit. At networks you add a network and tag it with required vlan. Flag
the network as VM network, so as to become available for guest VM use. Then
at each host, at the network management interface of the host, you drag the
new network at the needed physical interface. Repeat same for all hosts and
you're done.

FYI: I recently found that ceph performs quite well in vmware, when using the 
VM as a "direct" ceph client.
(Our tests involved directly mounting an RBD device from the VM)

So as long as you can treat the OS level as throwaway, and use ceph-to-the-vm 
for your actually important data, this might be also a good thing to use in 
ovirt.

Currently, in order to use Ceph in oVirt you have 2 options: 

1. Ceph using ISCSI gateway - regular ISCSI storage domain with Ceph as the 
storage backend, supports all the regular operations [1]. 
2. Using the new Managed Block Storage (Cinderlib integration) 
technical-preview - Create a Managed Block Storage domain that doesn't support 
all the operations that we have for the "regular" storage domain you can find 
more info here [2] and [3]. 

Each option has its benefits.

I need some "best practice" advice. We have a Ceph Storage Cluster (Octopus 
moving to Pacific) which we'd like to use with our new oVirt Cluster (all on 
CentOS 8 boxes). What I'd like to know is what is the "best" (ie recommended / 
best practice) way of doing this - via iSCSI, CFS, 'raw' RBD blocks, some other 
way I haven't read about yet, etc? 

I realise 'best' is a subjective term, but what I tend to do is do 'manual' 
installs so that I both actually understand what is happening (ie how things 
fit together - I pull apart and rebuild mechanical clocks and watches for the 
same reason) and also so I can '"Puppet-ise" the results for future use. This 
means that I am *not* necessarily looking for "quick and dirty" or "quick and 
easy" (ie, I have no trouble using the CLI and 'vim-ing' conf files as 
required) but I do want a solid, "best-practice" system when I'm done. 

So, can some please help? And also, would you mind pointing me towards the 
relevant documentation for the answer(s) supplied (yes, I *always* RTFM :-) ).
