Alexey,

To my knowledge there wasn't anything removed, there was just a problem with
how 6.X formed read() size when running on a Linux host headless supporting
windows guests across the network. Grabbing strace output of what was
happening showed 6.x using a read size of 1 with 32-bit windows guests. This
resulted in simple things like a "Dir" of a directory holding 200 files to
take minutes to complete. The 5.2 branch never had this problem.

While I cannot answer your question about 5.2, but I have a counter
question:
Why was a 5.x feature removed from 6.x? Was it removed from the GUI or API
as well? Was this removal documented and whats the reason for feature
removal?

In general, I recommend against removing features that are useful and used
by people.

[VBox-users] No 5.2 branch for Linux 5.8 kernel forward? Is this right?

2020-08-16 Thread David C. Rankin
Frank, all,

Even though there are testbuilds for 5.2 (139677), according to
https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/19644 5.2 is unsupported. Does this mean
there will be no 5.2.46 that will build with the Linux 5.8 kernel? If so, does
this also mean that the 5.2 testbuilds will not be fixed to work with the 5.8
kernel?

I ask because I have maintained the 5.2 branch for Archlinux AUR for the
past few years. I did so because the 6.X branch would not work with headless
guests across the network. Does this mean there will be no more 5.2 builds
(official or testbuilds) capable of supporting the Linux 5.8 kernel?
