Re: [Veritas-bu] MPT driver and SG

2008-07-22 Thread Jon Bousselot
Martin,
I checked the files I downloaded, and the 6.5.2 was indeed the A version.
NB_6.5.2A.solaris_x86_305652.tar
The other necessary patch files (client, java, ndmp) were applied, and were the
correct version.

The files I used on the sparc version I'll have to check later.

Sun is working on the ticket now, so when they fix it, I'll let you know what
it was.

Hi Jon,
I've looked to the NBU6.5 HCL, and the SL24 supported either with FC, or SCSI.
Since you already upgraded to 6.5.2, and Symantec already released the 6.5.2a,
why don't you try to go with it.
you can check here: http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/305652.htm
there's some robot issue fixed on this release version.

How many tape library do you have?

looks like you need to do the device mappings.

And btw, if you only had one tape library, the robot only attached to one

fix the problem?

I've encountered a variety of problems that I can relate to this.

1. Sun Sparc system with fiber attached tape/robot, had the bad patches
but not the workaround, and sg sees the tapes and robot just fine. The
sg driver worked fine at version 6.5 and 6.5.2.

2. Same Sun Sparc system with scsi card added, workaround patches
applied, and sg cannot see the robot on the scsi bus, only the drives.
The robot and drives on the fiber card are still there and working just
fine.

3. Sun x86 system with fiber attached tape, did not have the workaround,
sg sees only the tape. After the workaround, sg sees the tape and robot
and I could setup the devices. After 6.5.2 patch, sg does not see the
robot any more.

I've done the sg.build, and run sgscan a dozen times. Reconfigure
boots, devfsadm, cfgadm, luxadm probe... it seems Solaris can see all
the devices down either type of controller, but SG refuses to bind to
the robot.
On the Sparc system, I'm moving the library off of a working 6.5.2
Solaris 9 media server that is being decommissioned, so I know the
library and drives are good.
The x86 system is a new install.

2008-07-22 Thread Tim Hoke
If you're at 6.5.2, there's really no point in applying 6.5.2A. The only
incremental difference between the two is documented in TN 304269:
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/304269.htm

So, if you haven't been affected by the STREAMS (AKA Incrementals as
Fulls) problem documented there and are ALREADY at 6.5.2, there's not much
point in applying 6.5.2A.

Re: [Veritas-bu] How to change a Media ID

2008-07-22 Thread Travis Kelley
I think you just need to change the barcode...not the mediaid. You
can do something like vmchange -barcode 01951 -m 001951 to associate
the new barcode with the old mediaid. Media ids don't actually have
anything to do with the barcode. It just so happens that netbackup
bases the media I'd off of the barcode for our sake. Hope this helps.

2) Flash Backups - Again, licensing, is it per client, or per processor?

Cannot find anything definitive about this, and being asked these

2008-07-22 Thread Martin, Jonathan
I've tested this only for the catalog itself (i.e.
veritas\netbackup\db\images) and it works fine. The only downside of
this is that your volume database dosen't make the transtition - when
you load the media into the new host they will all look like scratch /
the media are no assigned as they should be (although you can restore
data).

I have not tried the rest of the Netbackup configuration but as long as
the break was clean (Stop Services First) this might work. Also, I'd
install NBU on the 2nd side first to ensure registry changes and any
files loaded on the C: make it.

2008-07-22 Thread Jim H

To add that client you need to remove your MP4 client patch.
Then re-run the 51GA client install and choose to install your specific
clients, or all clients.

Then reapply the mp4 client patch. You should be able to push then.

Re: [Veritas-bu] NetBackup 6.5.1 Catalog move

Is it possible (has anyone done this) to take a 6.51 catalog and copy it

We've done it for Solaris but not Windows. You basically do a fresh install
on your new OS, do a hardware config so you can see all the drives, and then
replace the catalog with the one you started with.

If your SAN architecture supports, I strongly suggest you clone or snapshot
the volume first so you have a known good restore point (yeah, on this
mailing list, we care about backups recoveries :-)).

Re: [Veritas-bu] NetBackup / VMWare Consolidated Backup FlashBackups

  1) VCB Backups (consolidated) - how is it Licensed from a NetBackup
perspective? Is it based on 1 host with multiple VM machines, per processor

 2) Flash Backups - Again, licensing, is it per client, or per processor?

Cannot find anything definitive about this, and being asked these questions
 by my supplier.

You need to change suppliers. These are basic questions that any supplier
should be able to answer. I'm too lazy to look it up, but the VMware
licensing information was posted to Symantec's web site a year or longer
ago.

1. You need 1 license per OS type on the host. So, if you have 20 Windows
guests plus 2 Linux guests, you need to purchase 1 Windows client license
and 1 Linux client license. Add a Snapshot/Advanced license if you want to
use Snapshots (which includes VCB).

2. It's per client and there are multiple tiers in the client types. You
need to know what tier your client is in and then purchase 1 client for that
server. The license is actually installed on the master server.

Re: [Veritas-bu] question about bplist

2008-07-22 Thread rascal
Thanks for all of the great information everyone! A couple of things I
would like to add:

1. I didn't add a directory because I was under the impression (and if you
try for the day of and up to a couple of days back) that simply searching
via policy (-k policy) I would get everything backed up via policy.

2. I went with the default on -R because I think that will cover everything
I need quite well but based on the suggestions I will do some further
investigation.

3. I see the command bpflist was mentioned and I hadn't considered it
because of the parsing work I would have to do but now that I am thinking
about it, it might be a better option to my data

Other than that, I think this will get me all set. Again, thanks to you
guys for the information and feedback, I really appreciate it!!

 Rascal,

You have to supply a directory of some kind or the command won't work. So
 replace this:

 bplist -C clientname -S svrname -k policy_name -R -l -s 07/1/2008 00:00:00
  -e 07/1/2008 23:59:59 /$HOME/policy_name_070108

 With this:
 bplist -C clientname -S svrname -k policy_name -R -l -s 07/1/2008 00:00:00
  -e 07/1/2008 23:59:59 / /$HOME/policy_name_070108

 Thanks,
 Frank

I have constructed what I thought would be a good command but I am

 00:00:00
  -e 07/1/2008 23:59:59 /$HOME/policy_name_070108

  but I get this error

  Status 227: Entity not found

So the one thing I would worry about that you have not specified is the
file(s) to search for. Default is your current directory. Does the
current directory you're running the command in exist on the client? If
not, maybe you want to explicitly give '/' as a filename?

Ok, well how about this, just to make sure we are not insane?

  bplist -C clientname -S svrname -R -l -s 07/1/2008 00:00:00 -e 07/1/2008
  23:59:59 /path_to_dir_backed_up_by_policy /$HOME/policy_name_070108

And here you specify the path explicitly.

So my question is, what am I doing wrong or what could I do to get the
information I want which is a breakdown of how much is backed with a file
listing and the amounts next to the file? Is this the wrong command or
 is
there a better way to go about this?

In some cases (depending on exactly what I'm doing) I prefer to parse
'bpflist' output instead of 'bplist'. It can be harder to get output,
but it allows me to pass in an explicit backupid.
