Re: [Veritas-bu] How do i switch my media adn master server!? HELP!

2011-11-18 Thread Lightner, Jeff
So if I read Bishop correctly the old master has LTO2 and the new one will have
LTO4 so the new one should be able to read the catalog backup written by the
old one to LTO2.

If it were me I'd do a test back on the LTO2 then verify I could read it on the
LTO4 before switching anything.

The LTO Ultrium compatibility is defined with two concepts demonstrating
investment protection: 1) An Ultrium drive can read data from a cartridge in
its own generation and two prior generations. 2) An Ultrium drive can write
data to a cartridge in its own generation and to a cartridge from the immediate
prior generation in the prior generation format.
http://www.ultrium.com/About/faq.html

So an LTO4 drive should be able to read an LTO2 tape, but not write to it.

LTO5 from LTO1 we actually bought a couple of LTO3 drives as well as we found
LTO5 wouldn't read our old LTO1 tapes but LTO3 will.)

yes I found that link jeff thanks.

so here is what I have written up for tomorrow.

plan, pause all netbackup processes. and reinstall netbackup from disk to both
master server in the data center and the media server in the office.

-run a catalog backup the night before.
(this is one concern of mine)

Plan for this operation to be done on tuesday as it is the lowest impact on
backups.
Upon reinstalling netbackup to the data center, designate it to be the master
server.

so about the catalog restore. My media server uses LTO4 and the current master
uses LTO2. how am I going to move this catalog to the new master? (in theory i
cant restore to this library while nbu is down and i have no designated master
server correct?)

am I missing anything else big?

I will not be able to change the IP addresses, will it still work?

WOw yeah im surly a newbie since i didnt even think to do a test run.

is there any way I can do a test to see if I can read a catalog off an lto2?
well i guess (theory craft) if i make a test box and hook it up to the lto4
library and i am able to do a restore using lto2 tapes that a catalog will work
the same way.

I am emailing the plan in 10 minutes... wish me LUCK brothers!!

You might want to do some legwork of your own.

Having previously provided you the link for doing this for UNIX/Linux you might
have searched to see if there was a similar one for doing it for Windows.
There is.

Change bk1 to bk2 and bk2 to bk1. The important thing is that the new master
server have exactly the same host name as the old master did or the catalog
can't be reimported.

If this is Unix to Unix (or to or from Linux) have a look at:

Hello,
I you want to do it yourself, you have two options.
A. Switch the hardware.
B. switch the hostnames and reinstall netbackup on both systems. Do a
netbackup catalog recovery to the new master.

If you have to keep the hostnames, your only option is to call Symantec.
