  And
really, we are talking about photographing small flies here after all, a

  Finally,

Re: [VFB] RE: Photographing Flies

2009-12-19 Thread Peggy Brenner
I built a light box using Kyle Hand's instructions on the McFeathers.com
site, however I had a shadow behind bog streamers, so this year I picked up
a ring flash. It solved the shadow problem and I can use it at shows with a
piece of mat board as a background. Actually I watched someone photograph
everyone tying at Conclave and went to see just what he was using, sweet
idea.

And don't look for a Brand name ring flash, the Nikon one is out of sight
price wise, but there are a couple of ones in the $100 area, that work just
as well

2009-12-19 Thread J Balmer
When you hook the camera to the computer, it sees the camera as a USB
storage device. It shouldn’t actually connect to the computer until you tell
it to. Some cameras have a specific switch, most will switch when you turn
the camera to view pictures. Using some picture capture software will allow
you to use the computer hard drive as the storage device rather than the
memory card in the camera. I use my video camera direct to the laptop to do
that, which I can also use for still shots.

2009-12-19 Thread Niclas Runarsson
My software connects to the camera in the same camera mode as when you
upload your pictures. The release button still works, but the viewfinder
screen is black. That live screen picture you would have on your camera
screen is on the computer screen (the little one to the right on my
picture).
They don't work parallel. You can still use the release button, but the rest
is in the hands of the software on the computer.

As far as I see Nick is using a canon camera. I used one years ago.
Canon is delivering some software with the camera which allows a remote
control of the device. That means you can control the camera, change
setup. At least with my camera, with the software you had more options
as with the camera itself.
But it usually needs Windows

Tony: Yeah, I'll see if I can find the exact buyer. if not, I offered mine to
somebody else, but if they don't want it, I'll GLADLY give mine to you. Reason
being is that I bought it back when we were selling on ebay. It also has
several color back drops to put in it that gives you different colored
backgrounds. And it sets up in SECONDS. I take my fly pics by using the foam
board from Hobby Lobby set up behind the fly. I have a retractable arm tying
light. I have a 100watt Fluorescent bulb of the blue spectrum (daylight)
variety). I then set the camera to macro, flash OFF, and I just adjust the
white balance, or exposure balance till I get it to where I want it. I also
take the macro OFF, stand back a few feet and zoom in (with the flash ON) and
take the pics that way. Chuck

better at close ups.

Right on. That's a Canon PowerShot... which we bought after asking Hans W
for advice. We were so happy with that, so after she'd killed it, we bought
another one. LOL

There was a remote capture software coming with that one. A little more
basic than the PSRemote software, but it worked fine. I didn't discover that
it was there until I had PSRemote installed though. PSRemote is a Breeze
Systems product. It's designed for PowerShot models. They also have DSLR
Remote for Canon DSLR cameras and NKRemote for Nikon DSLR cameras.

Here's their home page: http://www.breezesys.com/index.htm

As far as I see Nick is using a canon camera. I used one years ago. Canon is
delivering some software with the camera which allows a remote control of
the device. That means you can control the camera, change setup. At least
with my camera, with the software you had more options as with the camera
itself. But it usually needs Windows Rene, on Linux

J Balmer wrote:

When you hook the camera to the computer, it sees the camera as a USB
storage device. It shouldn’t actually connect to the computer until
you tell it to. Some cameras have a specific switch, most will switch
when you turn the camera to view pictures. Using some picture capture
software will allow you to use the computer hard drive as the storage
device rather than the memory card in the camera. I use my video
camera direct to the laptop to do that, which I can also use for still
 shots.

I checked my camera out and hooking up to the computer via the cable
 turned off all camera functions.

Is there another way. or is this another Oly-glitch?

I thought all cameras worked parallel on screen.

I guess I never would have thought of using the cable that comes
with my camera to look at the picture in a size that can be easily
seen. You have given me a great idea, I have a small waterproof

Works perfect... a Mongopod. When photographing flies, I also
use a remote capture software... everything's done from the
computer as soon as the fly is in the vise. The only things I do
with the actual camera is switching it on and off. Very
comfortable. With an instant high resolution preview on the
monitor, I will see at once if it's good or not. When the lights
are fixed, settings OK... I click for a hard picture, that goes
straight into the folder on the computer, without taking any
children pictures space on the memory card. LOL

Very handy... especially when doing step-by-steps. With the mouse
beside the vise I take a picture when I want and can see directly
if it's OK to move on or to take a new one.

Subject: [VFB] Material Source Req'd- Peccary and 50/100 Gel Spun thread

 Hi Guys:

 Break time finally

I finally hope to get around to fishing, tying and replying to emails
now that the summer break is going on.

I am looking for PECCARY hairs. If I am not mistaking the spelling,
peccary has some fantastic hairs which can be wound to form amazing
bodies with a heavily mottled effect. I know it is not rope dubbing but
 what can one do!!

Does anyone have a good source of either, or know of a place  selling
 them at decent prices?

I will probably need a couple dozen gel spun bobbins, and would like a
 good sized bunch of peccary.

If you have an excess supply of either and want to sell or trade, or
know of a good source, please let me know. My mate (a brilliant tyer)
and I (a not brilliant tyer) need some of both.

 Thanks Guys,

 Reuven

[VFB] Snow storm back east

2009-12-19 Thread jim phillips

We just went thru a severe storm last week here in the west. We received 18
here at the Sierra Base and above 5000' they received 2-6 ft and more of snow.
Now we are battling frozen fog, ice and cold wind. Water pipes are feezing all
over the place. Get all your quilts out, store up some heating supplies, easy
to prepare food, your tying supplies and train your dog to lay on your feet.

Merry Christmas all!

May your GOD be your fishing partner.
