Subject: [VFB] Upcoming Trip to the US

Hello to all:

I have been away for a while, but am now back in force.
Despite not having touched a fly rod in over 6 months, I hope to
remedy

that soon.

My brother is getting married on the 27th June in NY. I will be
travelling
to the US on the 15th June and will be staying until the 14th
July. He

is

getting married on a yacht (holds 230 guests so not really a fishing
punt!) in NY harbour. Whilst I will be predominantly based in NY and
Boston (I have been dying to fish Stripers and Bluefish in Boston
for
years), I also hope to travel to Arkansas to catch up with 'the
boys'.
Apparently I can drink moonshine and tie some funny little burnt
orange
flies whilst shaving away slivers of bamboo (yes...I know.my
dreams

are quite tame). If anyone is interested in catching up in or around
(within reason or a long bus ride) any of these locations, for a
drink

or

a fishing trip, please make contact. This trip has been a long time
coming. Despite a number of false calls, I have booked and paid
for the

ticket. No going back now.

I look forward to catching up with as many of the group as possible.

Regards to all,

Reuven

To the many friends I talked with at Sow Bug it was a great pleasure.
I feel obligated to thank Tony Zpezio for his hospitality.  It was worth the
10 hour drive from Ohio with Alan Fish just to see Tony feeling so well.
I hope he has many many more. It was a true pleasure to spend some time'
with he and Dot. These are good people. Thanks again Tony..

The Sow Bug was great.  It never ceases to amaze me just how friendly
these people from Mountain Home are. It was great talking with them.
All ready looking forward to next year.

Re: [VFB] Sow Bug

2010-03-26 Thread Scott Bearden
I think that is the most fun tying flies I have had since I started. I
mainly tie for myself, but I have always volunteered for tying demos for
local Trout Unlimited stuff like at our booth at local sporting shows, or
like the annual kids heritage fishing day where they want a few of us to
teach kids about fly fishing and fly tying.

The Sowbug was a new experience for me though and I can't wait until next
year.

Depends on what species you are after. There is just about everything
nearby. Salt water stripers on the Chesapeake Bay, Shad and smallmouth in
the Potomac, for trout the Gunpowder is about 45 minutes north or for Brook
trout, the Shenandoah National Park is about 45 minutes west of DC. Lots of
good stuff to cover just about anybody's taste.

Re: [VFB] Tiny Fly Swap

2010-03-26 Thread Niclas Runarsson
I'm not going to single out a fly either... among the 10 which weren't Don's
rope dubbed Adams, of course. (But since Don is pre-singled out, that
doesn't really count. LOL)

All flies were great, but the one who impressed me the most was Allan ze
Meizter himself. 11x11... 121 flies to keep track of... flies you can
barely see. My heart makes double strokes when I'm sorting regular sized
flies and drop one on the floor. I wouldn't dare meistering this. It would
mean nightmares for a couple of months during the swap... nightmares about
having to tell everyone that all flies disappeared when I was sorting and
suddenly sneezed. LOL

My fly wasn't that tough. All-thread fly... and thread is a pretty easy
material to work with. 6/0 for the abdomen and head plate/wing buds... and
10/0 for the legs and the body.

The extended part isn't woven. It's only platted and made separate from the
fly (which also makes it much easier). In fact the abdomen can count as a
'material' of itself. I platted lengths which I then cut pieces from when
making the flies... like cutting yarn from a spool.

The hardest part of the fly was the eyes... to get the right width and
(hardest) to tie them in. Barely 2mm's wide and really small eyes. It's like
tying with gloves. You don't see them between your fingers... you can't even
feel them. First wrap is a chance wrap. Either they are there or they are on
the floor (where you won't find them, so you have to make new ones). After
tied in, it's pretty easy to push them in place with sharp tweezers or a
dubbing needle though, and secure them and at the same time building a head.
I'd say most of the flies in this swap are more challenging ties than my
own.

I made a step-by-step on this for my friends on the Swedish forum. It's in
Swedish, but easy to follow:

Remember I invited y'all to join the Tiny Fly Swap? Well, it's
over, the flies are distributed, and Nick has pictures on his web
site.

As much trouble as I had with my simple flies, the rest of you
boggled my mind with your artistry.

I hate to single any fly out because they were all great (with the
exception of the swapmeister's contributions). But a woven extended
body on a size 32?? You've got to be kidding! Nope. I've seen them
and lovinglyfondled them! ;-) And they were all perfect.

Thanks to all who participated. And many thanks to Nick for taking
the pictures and putting them on his website.

[VFB] quote for the day

2010-03-26 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
Fishing books, lit by emotion recollected in tranquility, are like poetry. We do not think of them as books but as people. They are our companions and not only riverside. Summer and winter they are with us and what a pleasant company they are.

Re: [VFB] Upcoming Trip to the US

2010-03-26 Thread Tom Davenport
Sounds like you won't be coming any further west than Arkansas, but if you get
adventurous and decide to check out the fishing and scenery in Utah, I'd be
happy to show you around.

 Hello to all:

I have been away for a while, but am now back in force.
Despite not having touched a fly rod in over 6 months, I hope to remedy that
 soon.

My brother is getting married on the 27th June in NY. I will be travelling to
the US on the 15th June and will be staying until the 14th July. He is
getting married on a yacht (holds 230 guests so not really a fishing punt!)
in NY harbour. Whilst I will be predominantly based in NY and Boston (I have
been dying to fish Stripers and Bluefish in Boston for years), I also hope
to travel to Arkansas to catch up with 'the boys'. Apparently I can drink
moonshine and tie some funny little burnt orange flies whilst shaving away
slivers of bamboo (yes...I know.my dreams are quite tame). If anyone is
interested in catching up in or around (within reason or a long bus ride) any
of these locations, for a drink or a fishing trip, please make contact. This
trip has been a long time coming. Despite a number of false calls, I have
booked and paid for the ticket. No going back now.

I look forward to catching up with as many of the group as possible.

 Regards to all,

 Reuven
