[VFB] World's record fly casting distance... This is unreal!!!!!!!

2012-04-11 Thread Chuck Alexander
Folks: This article is dated 2010, so the record may be broken by now, but
243ft cast with a fly rod. That is unbelievable. That's casting it nearly a
football field. And I thought my 75-80 ft casts were awesome LOL, Chuck

[VFB] Mustad hooks cheap

2012-04-11 Thread Chuck Alexander
Folks: I know we just had a hook Co-op buy, but if anybody needs hook on the
cheap, I just now stumbled across this guy. And they are Mustad hooks. @ 200
for $7.50 plus $3.25 SH, that only comes out to 5.4 cents per hook DELIVERED.
Now, that's the auction starting price and not the buy it now price, but I
checked the completed listings, and you can snipe them easily for the $7.50
starting price. I have no reason to promote the guy and have never heard of
him/her till just now, but they do have 100% positive feedback rating. He also
has plenty of small sized hooks too, down to size 28 I think I saw. I looked
for these as i was JUST now in the process of watching an A. K. Best video
called Tying Tiny Flies and A.K. makes tying those size 22 hooks look soo
easy, when I can barely SEE the hook, much less tie a fly on it LOL...Chuck

BTW. Can somebody tell me what the advantage of using a Mustad hook #37160 (see
the link at the bottom to see what I'm talking about) over a standard scud
hook??? i have a bunch of the #37160 type, but I just use standard scud hooks
cause I think the gap on the 37160's is too small, after you get all the fly's
dressing on it. All I have used that hook for is a little inch worm
caterpillar type pattern, cause the curvature on that hook looks like the inch
worm in motion. to me more than the regular scud hook does, but that's just my
opinion, and the dressings on that pattern don't get in the way of the hook gap
hardly at all. Thanks..

Chuck,

BTW. Can somebody tell me what the advantage of using a Mustad hook
#37160 (see the link at the bottom to see what I'm talking about)
over a standard scud hook???

The 37160 is obviously designed for a special purpose.

Hmmm. Can somebody tell me what the Mustad 37160 hook is used for?

It sure looks weird to me!

tks.

Unfortunately, I didn't write down the name of the series.

Heck, if I had written it down at that time, I wouldn't have been able

Does anyone know what the title of the series is? It looks like it

I just emptied my small canister wet/dry vac because I accidentally
sucked up a large paper kitchen towel and thought that it might cause
a blockage. Besides, I haven't emptied the vac since I purchased it
two or three months ago.
The paper filter was well clogged up with a mass of fur like
substance. bits of fly tying materials etc., but as I looked in the
bottom of the canister, there was my brassie for pushing hair when
tying muddlers etc. This after loosing a favourite genuine Matarelli
whip finisher, that probably fell off the desk where I tie my flies
and landed in the waste paper basket below without my knowledge. One
almost needs to take out a mortgage to buy a replacement Matarelli, so
I settled on a Griffin copy.

Now, if I could only find my curved Anvil scissors that disappeared
last week I would have it made in the shade.

The Recoil guides, as novel and revolutionary as they were, just couldn't

 Hi Tony:

The REC recoil guides were fitted to my Swedish Guideline LeCie
double-handed rod which I brought back from the UK a few years ago. These
guides were the recoil single foot style as originally fitted to the rod.
The problem was that of breakage. Last September on my extended trip to
Northern BC for steelhead, I discovered first one, then two broken guides,
necessitating a trip to the local town for some emergency replacements (not
recoil) which I held in place with fly tying thread followed by a couple of
coats of Sally Hansen's. Then in January, on a lengthy day trip , I had
another guide break. Interestingly, the broken guides were the top two of
the middle joint and the bottom one of the top joint. In other words, they
were all sequential. Now, I'm not over lining the rod and I don't know the
cause, but each guide fractured in the same place, just as it leaves the
thread wrap. I contacted REC and at their request, I mailed them two of the
broken guides. They took a long time to respond and then sent me two
replacements, which was no good as they knew that 3 were broken. I felt the
whole lot were suspect and that they all should be replaced. I had a long
telephone conversation with Dave Lyons of the Angler's Workshop and settled
on complete replacement with Snake brand snakes with a fuji tiptop. This is
the only way that I could be reasonably sure that the problem should not
re-occurr. Maybe the batch fitted to my rod was just a bad batch, but I
wouldn't buy another rod with REC single legs and I provided that
information to Guideline's chief rod designer Lief Stavmo as feedback.

I like the rod, but not the guides.

Here are three original patterns using that style of hook.  This particular
English bait hook style is an Eagle Claw Laser Kahle L144, size #6.

The designs adapt bass fishing's Texas rig to a trout fly.  Weird little
buggers, but all of these have done a great job of catching both trout and
bass.

Re: [VFB] REC Recoil single foot guides

2012-04-11 Thread Neville Gosling
It certainly was cold temperature when the third guide broke as it was a
miserable day in January, cold with snow in the air on the ground. There is
one other thing that I don't like about the recoil guides and that is the sound
that they make during casting. The recoil guides, although mine were the
supposed heavier version, are very thin wire and considerably thinner than
ordinary snake guides.

DELIVERED. Now, that's the auction starting price and not the buy it now
price, but I checked the completed listings, and you can snipe them easily
for the $7.50 starting price. I have no reason to promote the guy and have
never heard of him/her till just now, but they do have 100% positive feedback
rating. He also has plenty of small sized hooks too, down to size 28 I think I
saw. I looked for these as i was JUST now in the process of watching an A. K.
Best video called Tying Tiny Flies and A.K. makes tying those size 22 hooks
look soo easy, when I can barely SEE the hook, much less tie a fly on it

BTW. Can somebody tell me what the advantage of using a Mustad hook #37160
(see the link at the bottom to see what I'm talking about) over a standard scud
hook??? i have a bunch of the #37160 type, but I just use standard scud hooks
cause I think the gap on the 37160's is too small, after you get all the fly's
dressing on it.
Thanks..

Chuck,
Sorry to say I have seen this on other groups that fell apart. Don't want to
see it happen here.

My opinion, but anybody who don't give a shit should just ignore the post.
Not everybody is interested in EVERY post or EVERY topic. So if we just start
reacting to ppl's posts like this, the group will just shut down, cause ppl
will be afraid they'll get lambasted for posting on  ANY topic. That's the LAST
thing any group needs. ppl need to feel free to post ANY on topic  topic,
without getting these reactions,. And I'm NOT trying to be ugly here, just
stating the fact as to what will happen if we react to ppl's post in this
manner.  Ppl's will either post on NOTHING, or they'll just leave the group,
one or the other. Chuck

Re: [VFB] World's record fly casting distance... This is unreal!!!!!!!

2012-04-11 Thread Michael Bliss
Can anyone explain the categories that Allan posted - there were 4. One
looks like a total of the other three but do you have a simple explanation
of the other three. Are there rod restrictions in length, material, etc.
like there are in golf?
