Well, she passed away at 9:30 am this morning. It has taken everybody as a total shock and her husband as well as her youngest son (aged 17) are being hit the hardest. But my wife is taking it real bad as well as they were only about 15 months apart and were raised almost like twins. She was only 48 years old. She was to start chemo this Monday. She has had a TERRIBLE cough for a LONG time (as in two YEARS). They did surgery last month and removed whatever they could but couldn't get it all and they found three more spots this past week. Anyway, she got up this morning, and was real short of breath. Then, when she started moving around, she just collapsed as the fluid had built back up in her lungs. The EMT's got there and she only had 20% blood oxygen. She stopped breathing, and the ER docs just couldn't bring her back. Just one of those terrible things I guess. Re: [VFB] selling flies anywhere- the early years of tying
Now we are getting into my neighborhood, lol. I too started tying without much to work with, and no stores or other flytiers or flyfishermen to help (Metairie, Louisiana, late 50's). Tying with lengths of thread rather than a bobbin made for frugal wrappings, and without the weight of the bobbin to hold the last loops tight, half-hitching was crucial- no other way. Even then, one bluegill and my fly fell apart. Had no head cement and didn't know what a whip finish was. For a long time I tied without a vise, so my left hand fingers became adept at multi-tasking, something that is natural to me even to this day. Like Bob, my BB-gun was my materials procurement department. Roadkill had to be 1st hand, or it was buggy (southern heat). Then I got my 1st kit from Sears. What a change that made, but I never lost the basics. I still have a baggie of some of the materials from that kit, just as a keep-sake- will never use it. Re: [VFB] selling flies now old time tying
Well I can blame it on Al, he said we should take the short cut to school that morning. We did not have school buses back then. Either walked to school of had someone take you, Funny that I brought this up, I just got a call from Al about an hour ago and we talked for 45 minuets, I reminded him about this and he remembers it real well. We have stayed in touch all these years. He lives in North Jersey. That really DOES date you. And I thought I was getting myself 'dated' when I found some stuff from a fly shop that closed in 1985. Re: [VFB] selling flies now old time tying
p.s., Bob, all that really means is that you've been tying longer than I have. I started at what I thought at the time was rather late in life. Over 30 years ago!! ;-) a. That really DOES date you.
