Re: [VFB] My health update
To anyone that might be interested. This past Monday, Aug 11, I started Chemo. I have been on hormone shots for about 7 years. Works, but not as well as we might like. A new treatment study shows those with the type cancer (prostate) that treat like I do that treat with the shots, if chemo is added the life expectancy raises considerably. So my Cancer Dr I have opted to go the double treatment. Also, total remission is expected. One down and 22 more Monday mornings to go. Today I went into Holy Family Hosp and had a chest port installed. Sure will be nice to not have to have am IV installed each time and I understand will be more better. I feel good, no side effects yet, some may come but will handle them as they come along. Yes, is messing up my fishing but hopefully that will eventually change. I read every post and am on line several times per day. Am being a good boy and getting all my treatments minding my Dr's. I do feel good. I do not post much but I do enjoy the list. We might get a few flakes of the white stuff tonight. What little we got over Thanksgiving all melted off so the ground at my elevation is bare. Do have a goodly amount at elevations. Wishing everyone a safe December. I'm keeping busy building a few Quads and am enjoying the heck out of my time spent daily in the shop. I manage a few flies now and then. My tying set up is right here in the front room and seldom gets straightened out. I do not mind the mess and as there is no Mrs to complain and the dog does not mind either. She was a Type-1 diabetic and at 55 all of a sudden she was gone from a heart attack. I made it to the river once when I was feeling up to it and got blown away by the wind, so fishing never really happened. Maybe next summer. I’d like to meister the ‘blizzard swap’, but I ‘m thinking work may be taking me to North Dakota soon and that means just surviving the winter. I’m glad it wasn’t this week, as they are expecting temps of -50°F down to -70°F possibly (real, not wind chill). I’ve been in -62°F (1978 Jackson Hole- real temp.)- that was cold enough for me. (FYI- Propane stops boiling at –43.6°F, so you could cut the top off a propane cylinder and look inside and see the propane liquid @ -44°F.) That’s cold. So if someone wants to step up and meister the swap, I’ll sign up with ice-dub, seal, and Yeti-hair caddis-fly nymphs. Hopefully there’s no more that 12 as that is a nice size swap. I keep a rod ready under the porch but I had a Froggie tied on the leader so I had to change to a trout fly. This took me at least ten minuets as my eyesight is not what it used to be. I tied on a sz 16 Green Mylar body Soft Hackle that was a killer the last time I was on the river. Got down to the dock and made a few casts, no takes. Then two boats came past my dock right through the feeding lane. This put the trout down. Waited a bit and the rises started again. Made a few more casts and still no takes. Switched over to a Brown Soft Hackle, another ten minuets lost. There was a steady riser and I cast a bit above and upstream from it. That was a take. A nice 14+ Rainbow. Cast to a few more rises that yielded another two more Rainbows in the 14 class. In a sloppy cast I hit the dock rail that broke off my fly. It was the only one I had like it. I tied on another soft hackle with a Peacock Herlbody. No takes and then tried another with still no takes. These two were sz 14 flies. I guess they wanted the smaller flies. By this time my legs and back had given out so I decided to call it quits. I had been on the dock almost an hour. As I was leaving I heard a big splash. Waited a bit and watched the area where I heard the splash. Sure enough It came up again clean out of the water. This trout had to be at least a three pound fish. What a thrill to see a Trout that big come full body out of the water. It cleared the water by several inches. I did not know what it was taking ,I could not see any bugs on the surface. Re: [VFB] Short Stort on Fishing
Nev, In 2001 I was paying $7.49 per 50 lbs of my special feed. As time went along there were several small price increases but I tried to not raise my hackle prices. I think it was in 2008 prices of feed jumped so I had to make my first hackle price increase. For the past 2 years feed prices have really jumped. One year ago when Lars got my birds he wanted to use the same feed I had used for many years. The price one year ago was $16.47 per 50 lb. Feed is milled on a 3 ton formula and priced per 3 ton. Within 4 months of Lars getting the birds he informed me that feed prices had again jumped considerably. I am not sure what the price is today but know he had to increase hackle price. It is alarming but if you go back and look at prices of everything else it is all very alarming to me. Clearwater hackle is still one of the top quality hackles on the market today and is priced competitively. Clearwater Hackle still is the only supplier of JV hens. Yes you can get hens from other breeders but they are not of the quality that we want in a true genetic JV hen. Still excellent price in the JV hen because they are processed at a younger age and still give we tiers what we want/need. Clearwater dry fly hackle is one of the top dry fly hackles on the market today, if not the top. Colors available fro;m Lars is far above any other breeder. Don't take my word for it, try it yourself. I am sure you will continue getting the same top quality hackle as all of you received from me for the past 15 years. There’s a /half-hitch tool/ on the market and I’m going to invent the /whole-hitch tool/. But what is a whole hitch /knot/? I looked it up on a knot website and there’s no whole-hitch knot shown. It’s just knot there. Maybe they’ve set that one aside for the marriage ‘tie the knot’. You’re totally hitched when you tie that knot, so it would be a whole hitch. Any suggestions? What Jimi said. If you do one half hitch, then reverse the second half hitch it becomes a Timber hitch, used in attaching a line to a log when pulling it out of the woods. I always reverse the second half hitch when tying a fly. It makes a bullet proof knot or end of my thread tie off. I use it a lot also in different places in tying a fly if I want the strength. Only 11 days until my High Mtn season opens. Hopefully the weather will cooperate? I shut off the heater in my pump house a couple days ago, just to save a few $$. Re: [VFB] Slow VFB today
We had 11 drops of rain in 12 rows very early this AM. Has been overcast all day and not nearly so hot. Hopefully we get rain soon. We are taking the 2 dogs and heading to Lowell Idaho for a week of badly needed fishin relaxin, Sunday. Are camping in the BIG tent at Three Rivers Campground. Fishin on the Selway, Lochsaw maybe the middle fork of the Clearwater. Expectin the October Caddis hatch will be coming off while we are there. Got to love the West Slope Cuts. Have been doing this last full week of Sept down there for the past 10 years at least. We tood the 2 girls (Jack Russell Terriers) last year for the first time. They loved it as much as we do and were surprisingly well behaved. Liz will be taking care of the birds while Kenny n I go fishin. Re: [VFB] re: slow list
Joyce, Because you asked. It started right after the New Year started. I allowed my phone minutes to be trashed, two months in a row. Got smart and started accepring only calls from known persons. I had to finally place on my saddles page that I had no saddles and would not have until late 2012. The calls dropped off some. I was getting from 25 to 50 calls per day. Yes Joyce, I even had a few knock on my door way out here in the boon docks. Everyone wanted grade #1 saddles, Grizzly, Variant and or barred Cream. It has been goofy. I have had rediculous prices offered. Lots of Fly shops wanting saddles so they could make the big profit. Have had some very pushy buyers offer me to moon. As I could not figure out how to use the moon in my tying, I politely hang up. Hopefully this fad will soon end. I have tried to not be rude to anyone but it has been very difficult. The barns are full of new babies. Some nice colors. JV hens are almost all processed. Know they will not last long. Feed price jumped from $12.64 per 50 lb bag up to $16.84. Not a happy camper.:'( I have been forced to raise my prices. Is only the second price raise in 15 years. Health is OK, am getting in some fishing and catching has been very good. Plans for a week late this month to camp out and fish the Selway down in Idaho. West slope Cutts. I have been doing this for about 8 years now. Try to catch the October Caddis hatch. Lots of fun! Of course I knew Tony was going to get the award. Many of us have pushed for this much earned and deserved award for Tony, far too long. He has helped far more people than anyone can know. He is a Prince of a Guy!! The Award was way over due. I am very happy he got it.
