Hi Gang,
winter is the time to prepare for next years fishing. trout have closed
season here, so what are we doing.
We are tying flies, which will decorate some trees next year (or catch
fish G).

What are you tying right now and what are your plans with these flies?

For myself: I have increasing success with my parachute beetle, need
new. So I will th up some of them with different variations, right now
just for stock.

An outboard motor is a handy thing for a long trip to the fishing
grounds, but what one needs for propelling a boat noislessly along the
shoreline of a bass lake at one-half to two-thirds of a mile an hour -
the proper speed for fly-rod fishing with bass bugs - is not an outboard
motor, but a well-trained wife.

Well folks.. A lot of you knew that we have been trying to get moved for about
three years now. And we FINALLY moved in on 9/11/2011. We LOVE it our here
way in the sticks. And within 10 miles in either directions, there is more
fishing than you could do in a lifetime. But one of the best things is that I
got my own little tying room/man cave. I say little and I mean little, cause
the whole room is only 5' by 14', and I have to share enough of that with my
boss to set up her sewing machine :):):).. here's a pic of my little piece of
the room. All I need now is a roll top desk to tie at. I saw some at Hobby
Lobby for about $299 that would make AWESOME tying stations. (That, and to get
my padded, comfortable, roll around computer/tying chair back from my son who
swiped it for his computer desk after breaking his chair) And, i have tiles to
lay on the floor, and a counter top to go on that little drawer base that I
just haven't mounted on it yet. It's great to sit in there any tie while
listening to my beloved Wa eagle, Auburn Tigers on the radio. maybe I
should put the TV from my bedroom in there BTW. This is as clean as you'll EVER
see this room. It looks like a bomb hit it now because I have been in there
tying LOL, Chuck

It's been a while since I hosted a streamer swap, tried one in the
summer and it was slim pickens for tyers. So let's go with a single or
tandem streamer of choice. Max 10 tyers.

Deadline April 15, in time for trolling for big fish after ice out.

 Hi Peter:

I know I tend to lurk around here a little over the past year or two, but
I sense a mate in trouble!!

I send over a bunch a couple months ago so someone may be able to help,
however, I am happy to send it over to you for free. I am going on a
family/fishing trip till Thursday but will be happy to order some when I
get back. I can get it very cheap here(a third of what it costs in the
US?). I also have 'assisted' postage. If you ever come across something
interesting, I am always happy to get a bit to try, even if my flytying
has gone to zilch over the last 24 months.

Let me know.

GREAT news.

Our own Tony Spezio has received quite an honor. He was Inducted
into The Rodmakers Hall Of Fame at the Catskill Fly Fishing Museum in
Livingston Manor, N.Y.

This actually happened at the end of September, but was kept
hush-hush to surprise Tony. The presentation was made to Tony at the
Southern Rodmakers Gathering in Mountain Home yesterday, where he was
teaching a two-day class on...what else..making a bamboo fly
rod.

Congratulations Tony. We're really proud of you.

Who feels like pooling resources to get good buys on pelts at Moscow
HF to divide up amongst swappers? Like the CO-OP swap, the meister buys the
pelt, photos it, and cuts it up to divide amongst the swappers, who send in
their share + SH.

Buys range from dirt-cheap to taxidermy quality, many animals listed
(dubbing quality critters), and 3 pieces would be enough dubbing to last a very
long time.

The numbers can be set by the meister and swappers. (If you want
half a pelt, find one more swapper.)

But a simple swap could go like this: (Just a suggestion of an easy
typical swap)

So you'd get a chunk of tail, some dense back, off-color thinner
belly. #1 2 swappers would want the mask for bushy flies.

There are hundreds of selections, so there could be many swaps.

Just a thought- one ore way to use the VFB for buying power.

I have been wondering where I could find hooks to use for tying fly's
on for
my daughter and I. I saw the suggestion for
http://www.fullingmill.com/, but
they are based out of UK, do you order them from the UK site any other
suggestions?

I would also like build some 1/2 x 12 x 12 boxes for storing them, I
tried
some cork from Michaels for backing, but when I removed a fly it tore it
apart (Styrofoam also had the same results.) I was hoping for some
suggestions.

Thank you

pelt, photos it, and cuts it up to divide amongst the swappers, who send in
their share + SH.

David,
Some of these combos are really bad in the combination they set up. Most
will have a level line that requires some practice to master. Most of the
rods are soft and you have to really slow down your cast and make a definite
stop of the back and fwd cast.
In most cases the rod is not loading, this is where a heavier line might
help.
Another problem I find with a lot of package rods is the spine is not where
it should be. It may be off anywhere from 15 to 90 degrees. It is hard to
tell you what the problem is without casting the setup you have. Not to hurt
your feelings, you may not be casting that type of rod correctly. Try a
heavier line, if that works, your problem is fixed.

Thanks Hans and everyone. I guess you can imagine how relieved everyone is
here that the surgery turned out so well for us. I don't know yet if I left
anyone there or if I picked up a hitch-hiker.

I tried to sleep in bed some of last night, and I must have turned so that I
was putting a lot of pressure on the surgery area, as I woke up in a lot of
pain, in that area. Will sleep sitting up from now on. Following JimmyD's
route and taking a lot more of my pain meds than I was. Will just mope around
today and convalesce, tie some flies, etc.

Mouth and tongue are numb and tingly, like coming off novacane (nerve damage).
Don't have all my taste buds, either. Doc say only healing will tell.

Pain is gone, and that's what matters. I can live with the rest. Before
surgery I was about ready to access that nerve for the doc using my SW 500.

Thanks Again,
Guys

Subject: [VFB] JFTD - THE BROTHEL

We all need a good laugh some days!)

The Brothel

The madam opened the brothel door in Winnipeg and saw a rather dignified,
well-dressed, good-looking man in his late forties or early fifties.

May I help you sir? she asked.

The man replied, I want to see Valerie.

Sir, Valerie is one of our most expensive ladies. Perhaps you would prefer
someone else, said the madam.

He replied, No, I must see Valerie.

Just then, Valerie appeared and announced to the man she charged $5000 a
visit.

Without hesitation, the man pulled out five thousand dollars and gave it to
Valerie, and they went upstairs.

After an hour, the man calmly left.

The next night, the man appeared again, once more demanding to see Valerie.

Valerie explained that no one had ever come back two nights in a row as she
was too expensive.

There are no discounts. The price is still $5000.

Again, the man pulled out the money, gave it to Valerie, and they went
upstairs.

After an hour, he left.

The following night the man was there yet again.

Everyone was astounded that he had come for a third consecutive night, but
he paid Valerie and they went upstairs.

After their session, Valerie said to the man, No one has ever been with me
three nights in a row. Where are you from?

The man replied, New Brunswick .

Really, she said. I have family in New Brunswick .

I know. the man said. Your sister died, and I am her attorney. She asked
me to give you your $15,000 inheritance.

The moral of the story is that three things in life are certain:

1. Death

2. Taxes

3. Being screwed by a lawyer!

Subject: [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY - Fly Fishing Friends

I wrote this one for the book, but maybe it needs a little explaining.

Good fly fishing friends should meet face to face and rod to rod.

What I've written below and in the attachment, explains the quote
We have fly fishing friends we can see and visit. Then we have those
friends hat we've met and grown to call friend, on fly fishing e-mail lists.

Some of my fly fishing list friends are as close to me as other friends I've
had
for years, although I haven't met most of them in person.

I'm sure you know what I mean.. . . Allan Fish, Tony Spezio, Don Ordes,
LarryJohnson, Doyle Sowersby, Iain Short, Jeff Frye, Deb Duran, Chuck
Alexander, Bruce Whittle, Dean Larson, Joe Fusco, Joyce Westfall, Keith
Passant, ReneZillmann, Nick Runarsson, Rick Zieger, Chris Cook, Ian
Mitchell,
and on and on . .

If I left you out, I'm truly sorry, for I count all of you on the fly
fishing lists to which I belong as friends. Those above were the ones that
came to mind mosteadily

My wife Jody will second that. She has a warm place in her heart for the
friends she made on the VFB, FFW, and HCFF lists who participated in
the Courage Swap, which Rick Zieger suggested - Jody calls the 50 fly tyers
who participated in the swap her RAINBOW ANGELS. Believe me, they
made a difference in Jody's bout with breast cancer. BTW, she's been cancer
free now for 6 years. To see the Courage swap flies, cilck on the
attachment..

Have a Goodun !

David:

I just checked the VFB e-mail archives. Pierre Masson joined the VFB on
3/20/2002. He's from Montreal, Quebec.
His e-mail address is protected, so I can't give that to you. I can't tell
when he left, but he sure gave me some good quotes for the QFTD. The quote
he passed on to me yesterday was in 2003.

Hi all:
Wishing to purchase salmon (any types) and streamer hooks (long or
interesting).
Not too worried with regards to numbers, sizes and so forth. Both are
hard or simply impossible to access here in Aus.
Any odd mix of hooks will do. Leftovers, imperfects, 'irregulars',
whatevers,...I am just after something interesting to
tie on, and not necessarily to fish on. Size 1 or larger saltwater hooks
also cool.

Able to do a swap for something or pay some cash. Good chance to clear
out your odds and ends.

Thanks to all,

R

200 flys to the East Coast Chapter and 200 to the west coast Chapter plus
lots of feathers, chennile, braid, mylar tubing, glass beads etc. Hooks are
needed by both chapters. If you want, I will send you their addresses.

I have been down for the last couple weeks due to anemia from the chemo (the
VA doesn't call it chemo but six horse pills an day and a weekly injection
that makes you feel like hell; sure feels like it) they have me going thru.
The VA FINALLY gave me some new meds to inject myself with and -- my energy
is slowly returning. $500 bucks a shot! So it had better work. My virus is
below 350 and thats from 37 million. Weight is at 170 (Four years ago I was
at 280). Went bowling last night and had two good games (193 and 182) then
just pooped out with a 132. Now to find me a fishing partner (VA will not
let me drive as I fall asleep too easily) that will drive and I can start
using the Artic Fox mini-jigs I have been tying lately.

God Bless you all
Jim

May your GOD be your fishing partner.

I am working on a fly tying station for a nice young man who saves all of
his allowance for fly tying supplies. I am going to include a vice, bobbin,
bodkin and other tools with the station. I am also going to send some tying
materials, hooks etc.

Was wondering if anyone else would like to contribute something for this
young man. His mom calls him a Tech Winnie but lives to tie flies.

If you would like to contribute anything just send it to me with a note,
For the Kid, and it will go in his box.

I plan on having the station completed and reedy to ship around December the

12th.

If you would like to include some flies or materials, just note as above and

send to;

Jimi, For the Kid

Lakewood, NM 88254

Thanks my friends, we have a new tier to educate and support. Also, if you
would add a card or note with your contact info it will accompany whatever
you send so he can contact you directly.

This is the Cherry on top with me working the Christmas for OUR Troops

going BALD).

Hi All,

I thought I'd give a little fishing report with some photos and run a fly
swap idea by people to see if there is any interest. Tha salmon are
starting to come into the local rivers so the sea run cutts tend to follow
and chow on eggs. Last sunday I was able to hook (and release) a nice
dolly varden as well as a couple of cutts and coastal rainbow. Yesterday
my brother and I went out to get some sea run cutts and did pretty well...
these guys are always on the move so you've got to find em' sometimes you
can get several out of one hole. These are not huge fish but are really
pretty fish you gotta love em. You can see photos here:

http://www.nwtroutchaser.com/adventure.htm

Any interest in a small sea run cutthroat fly swap? Maybe 10 or 12 at most.

Tight lines,
Bill
