Because I like simple flies, I fell immediately and gave me away to the nearest yarn shop to buy »Boa Yarn«. Boagarnet, which is found in most yarn business, have a flat core with hair to one side. If you wrap the core flat on the hook shank with the hair toward the back, you get a nice palmerhacklad fish fly as easily subdued as effective. There are other brands that work just fine, just make sure they are made in the same way with flat core wire as the original. Rick Zieger also binds variants with rubber legs, metal ball more. I began to bind the original in various colors, such as a tinted color from purple to golden yellow on a streamer which proved excellent for perch. Otherwise it is black a reliable color noble fish. The creation goes on. I have long thought about a good imitation of the great bredrumpade trollsländenymferna are such fine morsels of big fish. The solution was so simple that it's annoying that I have not come on earlier. It was just to add a few yards long soft hackle in front of the yarn body to imitate the nymph legs. So it was clear and rainbows like it a lot. It binds mostly in black with grizzlyben. The latest addition in the fly box, I modified an old favorite, the Big Hole Demon, Boa Yarn Demon by replacing the original front body of chenille and hackle with boagarn. Becomes a slim and nice fish imitation of something better luster than the original. Liked by perch and rainbow. How many of you were able to read his message. For that matter, were there any of you who did not recognize the language? It was interesting - I couldn't translate it, even having studied the language for two years (okay, it was more than a few weeks ago!). But even more interesting, I ran it through Google's translator program. It was only able to translate maybe a third of it. Even it didn't recognize some words that I did. Was in the hospital a few days with a follow up with my primary doctor on Friday. While in the doctor's office I had another TIA. I am now under new medication a bit disoriented and weak. Looks like this swap has been a curse on me. First the fall I took that messed up my shoulder. Still taking therapy for that three days a week that will be extended for another six weeks trying to avoid shoulder surgery, It is helping quite a bit and I thought I could get to tying a bit each day. He cut, scraped and burned that skin cancer off my shoulder, and removed another suspicious looking mole that was getting darker and more irregularly shaped as well. All went well and he went real deep like I asked him to do to get it all if he’s right and it has not spread anywhere else. Now comes the waiting game of the lab results to see the type/stage etc or whatever that will tell them. I’m just glad it/they are gone. Didn’t feel a think except for the sting of the first lidocaine injections, which was great. Thanks to all for the thoughts and prayers and wish you’d continue that the lab results will be good as well and say that no matter what type it was, that he got it all the first time. However the question remains, “are the fish really smart or are the fishers dumb.” Since few people are able to accept or admit that they are not intelligent (in some area) they tend rather to accredit great intelligence to the prey and grant themselves the title of “even more intelligent” when they happen to land a fish. If one admits that a fish has but a pea sized brain and relatively simple cognitive skills, they must also recognize that, though humans have a grapefruit size brain and complex cognitive thought processes, we often remain quite stupid when it comes to thinking like a fish. Some fishermen have interesting irrational thought patterns like: “That looks like a nice spot I’ll fish here.” “I think this is a beautiful fly, so I’m sure the fish will like it too. “Wow . . . That is a beautiful fly rod, if I have one of those I’ll bet I can catch a lot of fish with it.” “I caught a fish.” I would surmise that the only ones who have “caught” a fish with a rod and reel are the ones snagging fish in low water with a bare treble hook on the end of the line. In all other instances the fisher did NOT catch a fish; rather the fish caught the fly. Fly rods, no matter how beautiful or expensive do not catch fish; fish catch flies. It makes little difference if the fisher thinks his flies are beautiful; it only matters if the fish thinks the fly is food or is endangering their space. There are many beautiful stretches of water that contain very few fish – the old 80/20 rule – 80% of the fish are in 20% of the water (or even 90/10). What matters to the fish are three things: ·Food – is there a source of nourishment ·Shelter – am I safe here ·Oxygen – can I breathe freely Fish are very sensitive to these three things . . . sometimes very sensitive. And maybe a fourth would be reproduction. They are very sensitive to their spawning time. The author’s opinion is that these sensitivities are not so much learned through intelligence, but are the God given instincts that all fish are imbued with. The fish have an instinctive ability to perceive if they are safe or on danger. They will avoid places and situations where they feel unsafe and gravitate to places where they feel safe and protected; we call these places structure. The fish have an instinctive ability to sense how much dissolved oxygen in in the water. If they cannot breathe freely they will look for a place where the water has greater oxygen content, like below a riffle, in colder water, or beneath waves. And fish instinctively know when they are hungry, what items are food, and maybe, and this may be a stretch, even which will give them the most protein for the effort it takes to catch that food. Sometimes when fishers say, “the fish are so smart today and won’t take any of my flies,” the fact of the matter may be that they are not feeding at that time of the day. Since fishers are not fish, they do not instinctively think like a fish. If fishers believe the fish think like humans they fall into self-deception. Perhaps, if a fisher can get out of himself and begin to think like a fish (and each species has different instinctual characteristics) then maybe one can be lucky enough to offer a fly in such an enticing way that the fish cannot resist the urge to catch the fly. He's got a stage 4 prostate cancer and has now been placed at a hospice in Kopavogur. Lately his health has been like a roller coaster and he has gone in and out of hospital. Now he had gotten an infection and was also constantly losing blood. His cancer had now spread to the bones and the treatment didn't do anything anymore. But an alternate treatment was planned, though he had to be both stronger and more stabile than he was for the moment. So he hadn't been placed at that hospice for the same reason as the other patients there, to get as much life quality in their last days. It was just better for him to be there for now. I had been there for 5 days and my sister for 2 and we sat alone with him. The fever rised and everything got worse. The situation reached the level where the nurses got other faces, offered us a book with the title At The End to prepare us... and finally also offered us a priest to help us with support. And when people with extensive experience of dying patients are doing things like that... you more or less know what to expect and we called his fiancé and my other sister. So for a couple of hours we all then sat there looking at his breathing and wondering if there would come another breath after that... when he suddenly stopped moaning and started to breath normally again and finally fell asleep. The man surprised everyone, including staff... and when we came back the next day we couldn't believe our eyes when we entered the room and saw him in sitting in his chair laughing at the TV. I had to go back home to Sweden the 23:th. Christmas Eve at home is the price of having children. But daily reports from my family has said that after this horrible night he has slowly but steadily gotten better and better... one foot in front of the other... and optimism has found its way into us again. Maybe he would get a chance to get that treatment after all. Isolating his cancer to his bones could give him a considerable amount of time. But this morning I talked to my sister. Yesterday her husband (also a doctor) had spoken to my father's doctor, who said something none of us had expected after seen him climbing like this. We should hope for weeks rather than months. My sister didn't catch the reason why but obviously something still is very wrong, despite the looks of it. This got a little bit longer than planned. Making long stories short has never been my field. Ruled that out with CT scans, and ultrasounds, and said though the gall bladder a little inflamed, there were no stones, or blockages. Plus, they did a Mio View stress test for my heart and said they saw little or no blockages, so I was glad to hear that. But SOMETHING is making it hurt 24/7. My doc says it could even be scar tissue/adhesions attaching themselves to my intestines as I had to have FIVE Hiatal Hernia repair surgeries, and have three plastic meshes in there now, along with 27 staples, and over 200 permanent type stitches. I hope they find out what it is, but just hope it’s something that can be easilly corrected as this pain is getting to be a major pain. And NONE of the meds my new doc I found while in the hospital prescribed me. That’s was the good part about that whole thing too. I went to a different hospital than the one we normally use, as we moved two years ago, and the one I now use is closer, and I love my new doc who is now our new Family Doc. Maybe you don’t know, that almost 5 years ago his wife Dini died suddenly. After that is was going pretty bad with Bas, because Dini was his soulmate, they travelled together all the time and Dini was always driving the car, because Bas was not so good anymore to drive . Bas was trying to survive without Dini but he was not mentally strong enough to live on his own. We , his friends has helped him a lot, but he was getting worse all the time , fisically he was also going pretty bad. His legs and his hands were also getting worse. So he was not able to walk anymore without the help of a rollator and tying flies was not possible anymore. After 3 months of living on his own, Bas was send to a nursing home for older people and there he is staying since then. His condition is not so good and he can’t walk not so far anymore. But his mind is in a pretty good shape as his memory is, he reads the newspaper every day but is not able to do any computerwork anymore , because his hands are not good anymore. Because his memory is still good I will tell him about the mail you have send me and that you have lost contact. Bas can,t send you a message, but you can send him a letter so he can read it , please send him a nice card or something, he will enjoy that the most. Me , my wife and his son are the only one that visit him on a regular base. Maybe you can tell other tying friends of him that you know this story too. I swear, one of those stitches on the back over the Deltoid felt like it ran all the way down to my left great toe. Doc Lesko was more than pleased with my progress. His intention was to evaluate and schedule me for physical therapy after examination. Mind you I set up my own therapy to keep the mussel structure from getting stiff and work it a bit since there were no clear instructions other than to keep it moving and only sling it when necessary to alleviate pain. Doc Lesko was impressed that my passive range of motion was nearly 100% and my active ROM was about 60%, (50% greater than expected). He ask about my régime and workout times and how I came up with the ideas for it. Told him went back to my Books and did some research on mussel movement and uses and worked from there. He said he would see me back in 4 weeks and was not going to waste my time with scheduling a therapist since I was 3 weeks ahead of where I was expected to be in passive and active range of motion. Did want me to refrain from any lifting or stress workouts using the biceps for fear of damaging the tendon attachment to the soft tissue after being snipped. Guess having all those books over the years and the varied interest I have help paid off in time and recovery. Never said I had a limited interest in subjects, but being a Jack of All Trades paid off I think. Still have discomfort and it hurts after hauling hay or feed, but life goes on. Is there a way to hyper-link from DVD video to another source url if you are using a computer to watch? Could I embed a Youtube video address onto a fly photo or sequence on the DVD and if clicked have a Youtube video pop up and show it while the DVD pauses? I've never seen it, but that doesn't mean anything. I use the 16/0 size for my smaller flies and cann't fault it. It is very strong, I would say the strongest thread for its size and produces very little bulk. That is I visited with Shauna, Larry was snoozing the entire time. She is such a trooper, and faithful companion to Larry! Like most of us, he married above himself! Larry is improving daily and his color is improving as the new liver does its thing. I called today, and Larry answered the phone! It is obvious that talking requires great effort for him, and after about five minutes he told me he had to put the phone down because his arm is tired, but still it shows that Larry is fighting to get back as quickly as he can. It will be a long road yet, he has a lot of edema and his kidneys still need a jump start, so he will be on dialysis for a while, but the prognosis is very good. I hope to pop down and visit with him this evening, and will post more then. It probably is a little early for Larry to get a lot of phone calls, but when he says he feels ready and able to talk with you, I'll let you know. Larry said in our phone conversation that he wanted to get back on the computer as quick as he can, so don't be surprised to have him suddenly pop up in the posts. I've got a solution for you. He got out some UV Knot Sense, a Loon Outdoors product, and repaired my line in about two minutes. On the next run, I hooked yet another steelhead (like I said, it was a good day), but this one didn't get away because the line slipped easily through the guides. Line Repairs, Knot Coverage, Fly Tying UV Knot Sense is a handy product that can be used to repair fly lines, smooth over line/leader junctions, and make other streamside repair jobs. Some anglers like UV Knot Sense for fly tying, employing it where they formerly used epoxy to make heads on saltwater flies. Loon makes two products with a similar name: Knot Sense and UV Knot Sense. Both products create a strong, flexible, rubber-like coating. They are really a Pliobond replacement, if you've been around long enough to remember that venerable product. Regular Knot Sense is solvent-based product. It has the same uses as its UV cousin, but it takes 20-40 minutes to dry, is flammable, and smells until it is cured. UV Knot Sense cures under UV radiation, which the sun pores down on us all. That means you spread it on, hold it up to the sunlight, and in half-a-minute it's cured and you're good to go. That is, unless it's January and you're in Oregon, when low sun angle and cloud-cover renders UV Knot Sense of marginal use. Ah, but Loon has a solution for we Northwesterners. They make a UV mini-lamp and a UV power lamp. Spread UV Knot Sense on the repair job, shine the light on it for 30 seconds or so, and the job is done. UV Knot Sense and the mini-lamp are now fixtures in my tackle bag. A Few Caveats You need to take a few precautions with this product: 1.. Don't look directly at the UV lamps when you're using them; you'll sunburn your eyeballs. Even the reflected light can create a problem. So don't work with your nose on the job, and if you're really paranoid, wear sunglasses. 2.. Don't use this material to cover line cuts in your fingers. Some anglers use superglue for this purpose, which wears off. But UV Knot Sense generates some heat when it cures, so it may be uncomfortable when it's on your skin. 3.. I have run across anglers (well, one) who feels that Knot Sense cures thinner than UV Knot Sense and thus makes a thinner line/leader coating. Scott Richmond is Westfly's creator and Executive Director. He is the author of eight books on Oregon fly fishing, including Fishing Oregon's Deschutes River (second edition). (Pilfered from the web by Buggs with permission by Dr. D, OK's by Veronica) I use it for shell cases, etc., and for knots. Tie your leader knots normally, coat knot with UV KnotSense in the shade and taper out (no ledges), then stick out in sun a half-min to cure. Gets hard, but not as rigid as epoxy. Will slip right through the guides. The Loons UV Wader Repair is the same stuff. I am doing a pretty good amount of tying, sitting behind the van's steering wheel. (Not while driving!) We traveled then with a Thompson A pedestal vise, my first tying vise pressed into road duty. I have built this little plywood platform thingee (have to do a photo). The tying vise clamps onto a crosspiece on the plywood thingee, and the whole arrangement wedges comfortably between my solar plexus area and the slant of the steering wheel. If you think about your specific design and dimensions, you can make yourself a quick, inexpensive vise mount and working area. Yes, the Art of Tying Behind Your Steering Wheel. The little plywood thingee is also the tying station for the top of picnic tables and the table described next: For tying in the interior of the van, I keep much of my tying stuff in the side pockets of one of those high-impact plastic lap tables. If I am sitting on the bed of the van, back against comfy pillows, I can just plop the lap table over me, and set up a tying station in a flash. Don is having brain surgery today (assuming they can find his brain instead of Buggs' or Veronica's). Don has been having severe pain from trigeminal neuralgia, which is a pain more severe than about any other pain a person can have. To correct it, they are going to have to open his skull and work past his brain (actually move it aside) to get to the trigeminal nerve. Once there they will correct the problem. I assume that means clip the nerve. Then they will reassemble his skull. It will be a 2 hour (plus or minus) surgery and he'll be in the hospital at least a couple of days. In the good old days he would have been in the hospital a week or two. And last night I was transferring the pics from the CD's to my new laptop when I accidently ERASED CD #1 of FF pics, which included the birth day pics of my oldest grand daughter.. Man, I was just about to cry when I found a SECOND copy of that CD.. Good think I like to wear both belt and suspenders LOL.. I'm gonna make THREE copies now, and have one at a safe deposit box, one at home and one at my other place in case one of them burns down...Then, I'll have a 4th and 5th set on my computers.It also had TONS of my earliest fly fishing/tying pics on it as well. I don't even remember making a second copy, but I'm glad I did. I'm funny about pics like this cause when I was 16, my Mom had died the year before and daddy had married a practicing witch and she burned all but a few of the pics we had of my Momma...Sorry if this post seems off topic, but it really ain't cause my early fly fishing and tying pics are invaluable to me as well. Specially since some of the pics were of us taking my grand daughter in the boat fishing when she was three MONTHS old.
