they are Nymph hooks and the eyes of the hooks are oversized. These eyes make
it MUCH easier to tie on the fly, but I haven’t been about to find a place to
buy these type hooks. Anybody have any leads?? Thanks, Chuck

Re: [VFB] Rotary Hackle Pliers??

2015-03-13 Thread aflytyer
Guess I must be the odd ball.  I use the old style pliers as weights to keep
stuff from unwinding, for the winding of hackle I use one of several rotary
style hackle pliers.  My rotary  vise I use just to check the off side of a fly
or work on the underside of a fly.  What ever floats your boatjust make
sure the drain plug is in place.
Gary S

- Original Message -

Don,
I agree with you on the old type hackle pliers but I really don't use them
anymore since I use the hinge type. I added a bit of shrink tubing on the jaws
and that works fine and prevents slipping.
One of the things I liked about the old type is you could put your finger in
the loop and just twirl it around with the hackle. I liked it for collar
hackles
When I started tying a number of Parachute flies that is when I went to the
hinge pliers and I just never went back to the old ones.
We just use what works best for us.
Tony

Chuck,
Seems like you came up with the correct decision to nix the rotary hackle
pliers. I have a set and never use them. I also have an old squeeze-spring type
with rubber pads, and I’ll use them before the rotary. The rubber pads on the
old pliers are the key as they don’t allow the pliers to put a break-bend in
the hackle stem, just a ‘soft’ bend at most. The rotary is hard metal and if
you put any angle on the hackle while pulling you break the hackle with the
crack in the stem that it creates. The old hackle pliers is a spring loop and
you can put your finger in the bend and sort of ‘rotary’ the hackle.

Secondly, the ‘old’ hackle pliers came in handy with the old short hackles,
which is all we had for decades- sometimes took two hackles to tie a fly.  With
the advent of Hoffman’s, and then Whiting genetics, the hackles are so long
that it’s easy to hang on to the hackle tip with your fingers while winding.

I’ve just struck up a deal with a local friend here in Nampa to be my
videographer and editor. I have been so busy with work I haven’t had time to
even keep up with Fantasy Fly orders. But he’s going to assist me in YouTube
tutorial videos, DVDs, and other videos I want to do.

After we do a rope-dub intro video, we’ll do some fundamental tying tutorials,
and I have a list of a dozen fundamentals that I will post videos on, one of
them being innovative ways of using Whiting hackles.

I’m also going to do a video of my old pool trick shots from 30 years ago.
Should be fun.

VERY INTERESTING FACTS ! !

Did you ever wonder why there are no dead penguins   on the ice in Antarctica ?
  Where do   they go?

Wonder no more ! ! !

It is a known fact that the penguin is a very ritualistic   bird which lives an
extremely ordered and complex life. The penguin is very committed   to its
family and will mate for life, as well as maintain a form of compassionate
contact with its offspring throughout its life.

If a penguin is found dead on the ice surface, other members of the family and
social circle have been known to dig holes in the ice, using their vestigial
wings and beaks, until the hole is deep enough for the dead bird to be rolled
into, and buried.

The male penguins then gather in a circle around the fresh grave and sing:

Freeze a jolly good fellow.

You really   didn't believe that I know anything about penguins, did you?

It's so easy to fool OLD people.

I am sorry, an urge came over me that made me do it!!!

Good morning,

I have been buying Fly tyer magazine through ebay for nearly a year
after being messed about by the subscription idiots and I am not seeing
the latest winter issue listed for over a month. Has one been released?

If it has, would be possible for someone to send a copy over to the UK
if I pay them through paypal?

Thanks

Hi Gary,

No, different companies which sell magazines individually, I found it cheaper
and easier than a printed subscription. I did have a digital subscription but I
was messed about and lied to by the subscription department hence why I went
down this way of getting it. I don't normally have any problems. I just haven't
seen it advertised and thought I may have missed out or it had gone.

Gary,

I am tending to agree with you when it comes to books and magazines concerning
fly tying and fishing has it is easier to reference them which is one of the
main reasons I started picking it up the way I did.

Get a copy of A.K. Best's book DYING BLEACHING Natural fly-tying materials.
Feathers and cotton do not dye the same way.  Best has full instructions and
will take you through it step by step.

Folks: Can anybody give me the “secret” to dying feathers (and/or fabric) with
Rit dye?? What happened is that my son had some dark purple demin material he
wanted dyed black. He added TWO boxes of Rit dye to the three gallons or so of
water as he had four yards of material to dye. Adde the salt but not the
vinegar as it said to only use the vinegar with salt if the material is silk or
wool and not cotton. Brought the water to a boil, then let it soak all day.
Still just came out a darker purple and NIT jet black like the dye is.

Now is my problem in that. He saved the water as I have a ton of grizzly
feathers, but hardly any black, so I was just going to sye a grizzly neck in
that same dye water mix after he finished. But I don’t want the grizzly to go
from black and white, to purple ad white. Any tips?? Should I add vinegar??
Thanks, Chuck

Chernobyl ant bodies, emu, foam bodies of various types.  and then the

I regretted selling my tying book collection so I decided to get some to
replace them. Just received my books from Edward Hamilton Books. One of the
books is form our own Hans Weilenmann titled  365  Trout Flies. Very good
photos and recopies. Also got several other books on tying.

SERIOUSLY: Don't Cheat! This is fun!

NEAT MATH TRICK
I love math tricks and this one really works and will only take you about ten
seconds!!! Amazing it  really works to reveal my all-time favorite movie. I'm
pretty good at math, so I did it in my head, then on paper, and finally on a
calculator just to confirm my numerical capabilities. Each time I got the same
answer, and sure enough, it IS my very favorite movie EVER!
DO NOT cheat. DO YOUR  math, THEN compare the results to the list of movies at
the bottom. You will be AMAZED at how scary, true, and accurate this test is.
1. Pick a number from 1-9.
2. Multiply that number by 3.
3. Add 3.
4. Multiply by 3 again.
5. Your total will be a two digit number. Add the first and second digits
together to find your favorite movie (of all time) in the list of 17 movies
below:

Movie List:

1. Gone With the Wind
2.  E.T.
3. Blazing Saddles
4. Star Wars
5. Forrest Gump
6. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
7. Jaws
8. Grease
9. The Obama Farewell  Speech
10. Casablanca
11. Jurassic Park
12. Shrek
13. Pirates of the Caribbean
14. Titanic
15. Raiders of the Lost Ark
16. Home Alone
17. Mrs. Doubtfire

Now, isn't that something?

I TOTALLY agree, but just two months ago, my doc, and the cardiologist who
read my Mioview stress test and other results, told me to only take either
an 81mg baby aspirin, or the lose dose 81mg, of which I have a bottle of
handy at all times, and not the two tablets in the article. I could not
read the mg size label on that box. But, I guess more would be less harmful
than taking none, and allowing the blockage to kill you before you got help
for sure. Anybody here heard any updates on any newly recommended dosage
that may have come out that myself and my docs have missed??? Thanks, Chuck

Donna: No way. I am just trying to get that certain Fishy Fullum book by using
the ol’s barter system since cash is a scare commodity here LOL.. And the trout
fishing books. It’s just that I know there are probably newbies, (or oldies)
that can get much more use of those than I can, seeing as we have no trout
where I live. I still have well over 100 books and/or videos besides those 3 or
4. And hope to buy 100 more in the future. EVERYnight before going to sleep, I
read my Bible, and I get one of my fly tying/fishing books and read about 20-30
minutes out of each book and I ALWAYS learn something new out of them BOTH...
Doc says it would help my insomnia if I’d just lay down and go to sleep without
reading, watching TV, or getting on the computer, but he does agree with me
that out of those three things, the reading is the lessor likely to cause
insomnia than watching TV or looking at the computer screen , both of which are
turning on and turning off at a rate of at LEAST 60 times per seconds (called
hertz), but it happens soo fast, we don’t see that “strobe light” effect, but
our brains do. Oh well, got off the subject there, but the short answer is
NOOO. I’d rather give up just about any other hobby I have that fishing or
tying.  I’m what they call “addicted” to tying. Now for some pretty weather so
I can get back to being addicted to the fishing end of it LOL...Chuck

Subject: [VFB] I need step by step instructions to tie this fly

Folks: I found this awesome looking, realistic looking blue dragonfly while
going through some boxes of materials today. if I tied it, it must have been on
one of my best days LOL, because outside of the “mussed up” Poly Yarn wing
material (mussed up because I failed to store it properly, NT because it wasn’t
tied properly). it looks identical to the blue dragonflies we have on the
lakes, rivers, creeks, ponds etc around here in the Summertime. And I have been
reading the book “Sunfishes” by Jack Ellis, the late, great sun fisherman from
Texas, and he shows in that book how, when these dragonflies are seen on the
water, instead of flying around, or landing on bush branches, it’s because
that’s when they are laying their eggs, and that’s when you see every
sun/panfish from bluegills, to crappie, to large mouth bass, POP them right off
the water. This is why I think that if I start now, I can have myself a good
amount tied up for when this happens in my part of the country in June and July
mostly. But, I nee a site/video that can give me step by step instruction f
anybody knows where one can be found. . And, the other day, my wife bought me a
bunch of peel and stick 2mm craft foam at Hobby Lobby and they come in
“metalflake” colors, and there is a blue metal flake she bought that (to me)
looks even more like the “real McCoy” than this solid blue one does, if that is
possible . Like I said, I don’t remember tying this fly, and if I did, it
probably wouldn’t look half as good as this one does, so hopefully this email
will reach the person who actually tied this one. I hope so as you did one heck
of a great job. The eyes appear to be made of a short 1/16” cylinder (that I
now have the cutters for to make these thankfully) and the body appears to be
“doubled over, and then has the segments tied every 1/8” of so with black
thread, with the wings tied in between two of those segments. I don’t think
it’s really that “hard” to tie, but one that, if you don’t get your steps in
the EXACT order, you’ll have to start over from square one, and I’m a pro at
doing that mess up LOL..  Thanks in advance. Chuck
