Guess I must be the odd ball.  I use the old style pliers as weights to keep
stuff from unwinding, for the winding of hackle I use one of several rotary
style hackle pliers.  My rotary  vise I use just to check the off side of a fly
or work on the underside of a fly.  What ever floats your boat....just make
sure the drain plug is in place.

Don,
I agree with you on the old type hackle pliers but I really don't use them
anymore since I use the hinge type. I added a bit of shrink tubing on the jaws
and that works fine and prevents slipping.
One of the things I liked about the old type is you could put your finger in
the loop and just twirl it around with the hackle. I liked it for collar
hackles
When I started tying a number of Parachute flies that is when I went to the
hinge pliers and I just never went back to the old ones.
We just use what works best for us.

Chuck,
Seems like you came up with the correct decision to nix the rotary hackle
pliers. I have a set and never use them. I also have an old squeeze-spring type
with rubber pads, and I’ll use them before the rotary. The rubber pads on the
old pliers are the key as they don’t allow the pliers to put a break-bend in
the hackle stem, just a ‘soft’ bend at most. The rotary is hard metal and if
you put any angle on the hackle while pulling you break the hackle with the
crack in the stem that it creates. The old hackle pliers is a spring loop and
you can put your finger in the bend and sort of ‘rotary’ the hackle.

Secondly, the ‘old’ hackle pliers came in handy with the old short hackles,
which is all we had for decades- sometimes took two hackles to tie a fly.  With
the advent of Hoffman’s, and then Whiting genetics, the hackles are so long
that it’s easy to hang on to the hackle tip with your fingers while winding.

I’ve just struck up a deal with a local friend here in Nampa to be my
videographer and editor. I have been so busy with work I haven’t had time to
even keep up with Fantasy Fly orders. But he’s going to assist me in YouTube
tutorial videos, DVDs, and other videos I want to do.

After we do a rope-dub intro video, we’ll do some fundamental tying tutorials,
and I have a list of a dozen fundamentals that I will post videos on, one of
them being innovative ways of using Whiting hackles.

I’m also going to do a video of my old pool trick shots from 30 years ago.
Should be fun.

Well, since Allan reminded me that since I have a rotary vise, in theory I
already have rotating hackle pliers, and since I hadn’t actually hit the
“order” button, I just deleted the pliers and jacked up the number of foam
spider bodies I ordered which I KNOW I use all the time LOL.. Chuck

I can't help but laugh, we have been delicately trying to tell you not to
bother because we hardly ever use rotary hackle pliers, but you bought both
sizes anyhow.
Oh, I'm still laughing 😃

Well, since these are so cheap, ($3.45 and $4.45 respectively) I went ahead and
ordered two pair as one has a short handle of about 1 1/2” I think and the
other has a 4 1/2” handle with a built in half hitch tool on the end of the
handle. Guess it’s the only way I can find out of they are my cup of tea or
not. My Daddy did a lot of mechanic work his whole life and he used to tell me
“Son, you can’t have too many tools” LOL.. Guess I’ll find out if he was right.
In my mechanics tool box and my tool shed, most tools I own I hardly ever use ,
but when I need them I REALLY need them. Thanks to all, Chuck

I have some, rarely use them, but don't usually use this kind of hackle pliers
tip as I find  it breaks the hackle more often than the standard pliers tips
that come together.  I think it is just a matter of preference.

Folks: I’m getting a fly tying materials order and have always wanted to try a
pair of Rotary Hackle Pliers. Do they work  good?? Are they better than regular
hackle pliers. Only problem I foresee is that after you wrap the hackle, those
rotary pliers will hang down a lot farther than normal hackle pliers, making
getting your lock in thread wraps behind the hackle would be harder to do than
using reg. hackle pliers. Am I missing something there?? Thanks for any pros or
cons. They are only $3.45 from Stockard, which is the place I’m ordering from,
but if I’ll never use them, that’s $3.45 I could use on something I will use.
