Charlie was definitely one in a million (billion?). I still remember at the Sowbug about 4 years ago he asked if Brandon was going to be going fishing. Since we only had one vehicle we were not going to be able to so Charlie asked if he could take Brandon to Dry Run Creek. Charlie had the patience of a saint and took the time with Brandon to teach him fly fishing. Brandon caught an approximately 5 lb. rainbow there and will always remember that experience. I think he also took Brandon the next two years. Charlie was one of his best buddies. He will be crushed to hear he passed away. [VFB] My new 8wt bass outfit
Folks: I bought a 9ft 8wt Outfit from Cabelas,(a Cabela's Cahill) that was only $59.95 for the whole thing. Rod, reel, WF fly line, backing, and tapered leader.. I bought it cause I had no bass rod and it's all I could afford at the time..Man, am I ever glad I bought that thing.. I tied on my biggest Dave Whitlock spun deer hair Fruit Cocktail fly that I have ever tied, complete with about an 1 1/2 diameter body, 3-4 inch tails, rubber legs, metal eyes, and a mono weed guard.. It was freezing and the wind blowing at 20mph at least. I got out there in the yard, lined up with the wind at my back, and the first 9 out of 10 casts went 60-65 ft, with an easy splash down for that sized bug.. I kept at it till I was getting 80 foot casts,(10-15 ft farther than I have ever gotten with my 5wt St. Croix rod, AND IT HAS A $65 spool of line on it LOL..) consistently, using a single haul cast. And the reel does have a drag system, although it is a gear against gear system, which wears out quickly, but is nice while it lasts. The rod is all graphite, and says it's medium action, but I would rate is as the FAST side of medium action..But, it also has aluminum reel seat,(vs the plastic ones usually found on these cheap rods) and double reel nuts to keep it extra tight. It has a cork fighting butt and the 9ft rod has TEN eyes, which I think helps to shoot the line even farther.. Anyway, if anybody wants a nice , cheap bass rod, I don't know how long that price will last, as i think it's normally $99.95, but still WELL worth $99.95 even. Anyway, just wanted to give this report in case anybody is looking for ran outfit like this..Since I bass fish only occasionally it will be great, but with cats and action like that, I may start bass fishing MUCH MORE LOL Chuck And I Have Miles To Go before I Sleep. At the end of the meeting I had 7 Rotarians come up and ask if I would teach a fly tying class for them. I did. Upshot is that 5 of the seven are still tying flies and fly fishing. How do I know this? I'm in that Rotary Club. You could do a demo and ask any interested folks if they'd like to join a Fly Fishing club that you're forming. So, if I bought 4 more say Thompson A vises at about $20 a pop, and ran an ad in the paper 6 week fly tying course, limit 6 people, first come first served. Then, the ppl would pay just enough to cover the costs of the building, materials, snacks, etc etc.. But then I'd ask them if they wanted to join a tying/fishing club, and we'd then have fly fishing lessons at the local City Park lake that I often fish. It might just go over. I started out with the basics pointing out the materials and tools and how they are used. This gentleman just sat quiet. As we progressed through the weeks I noticed he had a real knack for tying. His flies were top line. He never asked for help or had any questions. At the end of the six weeks I commented to him about his flies being so good. He said he had been tying for 40 years and took the class so his wife would take it. He said he had not been able to teach her but that I did a good job. In the classes he has attended, this was one of the best. My face was red but I was also proud. They joined our tying group and she is a good fly tyer now. I find that the very best thing to do when dyeing with Kool Ade is to first wash the article in good Dawn ( or similar) dishwashing soap, rinse it very well, and then proceed with the Kool Ade dying. You'll want to use a towel to blot some of the water out of your washed feathers so that it doesn't dilute the dye so much, but do have the feathers wet when you begin. Yes, you can add vinegar. I've done the dying both with and without vinegar, and found that the vinegar really doesn't make much difference in the end product. The Kool Ade is pretty acidic by itself. When the feather is a bit darker than you want it, take it out. This is because by the time you rinse the feathers well and wash them thoroughly and they will look lighter..also they look lighter when they are dry. At the end of this, I do a quick rinse with either hair conditioner or a bit of clothes conditioner which gets them softer and easier to handle again and also takes out and seems to set the remaining dye. [VFB] Using reading glasses to read a computer screen...(OFF topic from fishing/tying)
Folks: a lot of you saw my recent posts about my having to wear a high powered reading glasses, but then having to increase my font on emails and on my windows screens because I just could not read it. Well, I went to Wal Mart tonight and solved the problem..What you do is this, and they have a special place on the eye chart to do this. I wear a 3.50 X power reading glass. And I read books at a distance of anywhere from 8-10 inches away. But, at 18-22 inches away from the computer screen, it's VERY fuzzy.. So, I bought a pair of 1.75 power readers JUST for my computer (and maybe tying flies, just haven't tried that yet)..I can put those on and see the screen and the keyboard PERFECTLY. You have to check different powers to see what fits you, but the chart said the rule of thumb would be a reader than is half as strong as your book reader power.. There will be a slide bar for screen resolution. If you put the mouse curser over the slide hold down the left mouse button, you can slide it to the left, which will lower the screen resolution make everything bigger on the screen. Maybe refrain from captioning the post as prayers needed, but instead use a bit more subtle subject. And please, everyone, try to respond to such requests off-list.
