Re: [VFB] RE: Photographing Flies
MeddelandeI know what you mean about losing pics. I almost gave myself a heart attack last night. A while back, I had dumped tons of pics from my computer cause my hard drive was filling up. Well, I label all mine (FF pics, for Family and Friends pics). And I have backups on CD's. And last night I was transferring the pics from the CD's to my new laptop when I accidently ERASED CD #1 of FF pics, which included the birth day pics of my oldest grand daughter.. Man, I was just about to cry when I found a SECOND copy of that CD.. Good think I like to wear both belt and suspenders LOL.. I'm gonna make THREE copies now, and have one at a safe deposit box, one at home and one at my other place in case one of them burns down...Then, I'll have a 4th and 5th set on my computers. It also had TONS of my earliest fly fishing/tying pics on it as well. I don't even remember making a second copy, but I'm glad I did. I'm funny about pics like this cause when I was 16, my Mom had died the year before and daddy had married a practicing witch and she burned all but a few of the pics we had of my Momma...Sorry if this post seems off topic, but it really ain't cause my early fly fishing and tying pics are invaluable to me as well. Specially since some of the pics were of us taking my grand daughter in the boat fishing when she was three MONTHS old. Luckily, it caught about SIX Trojans it said. And I know that there is NO WAY would that person ever knowing send me anything bad. And that's what the geeks at Microsoft told us. That is was a timed delayed thing, and could have originated ANYWHERE and at ANYTIME...And like you said, they (the hackers) used a third party (our friend) to send it through.. or something like that. I never did figure it all out. it was all tech talk that was wa over my head, Chuck - Original Message - From: Allan Fish afi...@sbcglobal.net To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, December 21, 2009 11:08 AM Subject: RE: [VFB] RE: Photographing Flies This will be my last comment on this. Don: Well, that would be my wife who is brilliant as she is the one that put all those programs in here ROFL... I finally got a mouse for my laptop (and what a difference it makes) but haven't gotten a router yet (Christmas prezzies for the kiddies and grand kiddies ya know). But I'm gonna hook it up directly to the Hughesnet modem and download and install AVG as I don't trust the windows security program that came pre installed. That's what I heard (read) about Trojans too. They lay in wait and use a command that you think is a simple everyday command to trigger it. And, they (the viruses) have to have a host to attach too, so they can live and it can be a pic, a file, and especially an exe file (Unless you're smart like Allan Fish and get a MAC LOL), and as soon as you pull that trigger , the gun goes off so to speak..I PREscan EVERY attachment I get before opening it with AVG. which is one of the things I like about it, you can scan files, pics, programs etc BEFORE opening them. Ad-Aware is great at getting rid of things that won't always destroy, but will surely slow down your computer..Chuck - Original Message - From: Don Ordes To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, December 21, 2009 5:52 PM Subject: Re: [VFB] I got it, I got it, I got it LOL (OFF TOPIC) Chuck, from my understanding, a Trojan virus is what it's name implies- hidden (waiting to attack). You'll NEVER know where you got it, since it doesn't activate immediately, but needs a trigger. The trigger doesn't show up as a virus, because it's not one- it just completes the virus program (opens the horse's secret door). And the trigger can be anyting- a date, a keystroke sequence, a cont/alt/del- anything. I've even heard that they self-expand hidden compressed files to escape notice, and that they can see a scan coming and automatically relocate to a scanned section of the drive to escape. This is pure evil. I run Ad-Aware, Spybot, and AVG too, so you must be absolutely brilliant, like phenominally intelligent to be doing the same things as me...Oh wait, that's Buggs, he says, same thing as Buggs. Tony: Yeah, I'll see if I can find the exact buyer. if not, I offered mine to somebody else, but if they don't want it, I'll GLADLY give mine to you. Reason being is that I bought it back when we were selling on ebay. It also has several color back drops to put in it that gives you different colored backgrounds. And it sets up in SECONDS. I take my fly pics by using the foam board from Hobby Lobby set up behind the fly. I have a retractable arm tying light. I have a 100watt Fluorescent bulb of the blue spectrum (daylight) variety). I then set the camera to macro, flash OFF, and I just adjust the white balance, or exposure balance till I get it to where I want it. I also take the macro OFF, stand back a few feet and zoom in (with the flash ON) and take the pics that way. So, when I bought and watched Don O's video, and found that I had some hot ink ice dubbing I had an idea to try it. Re: [VFB] More rope dubbed flies
Don: You're right. I'm always afraid I'll break the thread. I did buy some mono to wind onto a thread bobbin to try it that way so I'll see how that works. Thanks, Chuck - Original Message - From: Don Ordes To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, December 17, 2009 10:49 AM Subject: Re: [VFB] More rope dubbed flies Chuck, nice flies, but it looks like you are stopping your rope-spin too soon, and not getting super-segmentation because the dubbing noodle is not tight. Use mono, dental floss, something heavy so you don't break the thread at the anchor point. Make sure you haven't twisted the thread with the dubbing by sliding the dubbing up and down the core thread while you have tension on the bobbin. Last, make sure you keep tension as you transition from roping to wrapping. Always do one pass only for the segmented abdomen (unless you build the fly up with an 'under-reverse-pass), then you can play with different effects on the thorax to finish up. This will add even more fun to it as you'll start to see some very buggy results as the segments get more defined and still have a natural taper to them. Segmented synthetics are awesome, and you can blend your pinks to add different highlights. Then go test to see what the gills like. I've just taken it one step further... yesterday I got too violent with a couple of flies and the thread broke by the hook. But, like you said... memory. The ropes are still on my bench. Now I have tried another technique. You start with making a rope... and I mean a tight rope... and I mean a very tight rope... and I mean a TOO tight rope. Then you cut that rope from the bobbin and tie it in at the breaking point. Then you make another one, lmost too tight. Now you have two ropes, one on the thread to your bobbin and one hanging freely... and you can start your parallel weave!! LOL It's tricky but possible. And by having one of the strands(ropes) connected to your bobbin, this is a parallel weave that you can practice without having to cut the thread first... which became another one of those chills I've been having. You can do this with other materials too... just tried with antron and it worked like a charm. When the weaving was done, the thread wasn't lying beside the vise, but it was in your hand, ready to be wrapped around the antron strands. ;o) /Nick -Ursprungligt meddelande- Från: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com [mailto:vfb-m...@googlegroups.com] För Don Ordes Skickat: den 16 december 2009 22:58 Till: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Ämne: Re: [VFB] Another quick rope dub test... Nick, Cool fly. Better name. Also try this. After you make your rope with the dubbing and hackle, compress it towards the hook and re-tighten (like the shaping segment). This works best if you use monofilament for the core (or wire), and things get tight and friction fights you. You may have a 3 long rope that you can compress 30-50%, and it will look way buggier, with better segments, and more dense. It will also feel more life-like to a fish. [VFB] OFF TOPIC.. I need to do some trading
Folks: I'm sorry that this is OFF TOPIC, but I need help. I must have been a good little boy this year because I found out today that my wife is getting me a laptop for Christmas. But, I need a router for it. Now, if somebody has one they are not using and could use some furled leaders, a book or two on fly tying, some hooks, or other materials I have a l;ot of, like deer hair, I'd be glad to trade. My son says the routers are generic, but I'm not so sure about that so I need help in that dept too. My provider is Hughes Net, so If anybody could help, I'd be forever beholden. [VFB] Pink Panfish Producer rope dubbed
Most of you know that I tie mostly (cause it has caught me and my family THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of bluegills over the years) a pattern I call the Pink Panfish Producer. Well, the particular shade of pink chenille I use for the bodies is getting harder and harder for me to find. So, when I bought and watched Don O's video, and found that I had some hot ink ice dubbing I had an idea to try it. Well, here are the results and I like it better than the original cause it's buggier and it's even pinker which is what the bluegills seem to LOVE cause I've tried the fly in every other color in the rainbow but with not nearly the same success as the hot pink. Re: [VFB] Rope-Dub result...
MeddelandeNick: That is an awesome looking fly. It looks JUST LIKE a certain insect that I'm trying to place but can't right now. A hellmagranite??? Or a certain type stonefly?? I can't find the book I found it in right now, but it looks IDENTICAL to that particular insect. Where do you get that squirrel dubbing??? Can you make it yourself?? Thanks, Chuck Chuck - Original Message - From: Niclas Runarsson To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, December 15, 2009 11:53 AM Subject: [VFB] Rope-Dub result... I got the DVD yesterday. It was a big Aha!!! I have had the technique explained to me in text format once, but it seems that I had misunderstood some. That's why I have only used it with a limited number of materials. But now the pieces fell into place... and I understood what he had meant with the words 'easy' and 'simple'. and 'using any form of'. I have a squirrel dubbing that has seemed like it was made for the purpose of giving me headache. Short, stiff and sticky... and the noodles have been breaking into fragments and fallen of the thread. If someone, yesterday, had told me that it was possible to make a rock hard and segmented body out of that one, I would have answered: Of course... laminate sand and you can make a rock hard and segmented body out of that too. Watched the DVD around 3 o'clock this morning (didn't yawn once). Today I dug out that squirrel, just to give it a try (for the sake of it). First try attached... GO DON! [VFB] Attn. Don O
Don O: I'm asking this on list cause I thought somebody else might have the same question.. I watched the video lie I said. I then TRIED to rope dub, without much luck (using a long fibered synthetic dubbing). Is the secret to it the using of mono to do the technique??? It dawned on me that you'd talked about using mono on the video and I was wondering if that is why I couldn't get it to spin tightly around the 3/0 Danville I was trying it on. Oh, and i remember you saying you were using 6 pound mono right?? What about tiny flies?? Will 6 pound work for them or should I use the 4 pound I think I have?? I work pretty good as long as you drill out the firing pin so you can stick say, a 1/16 dowel through that hole to get the popper bodies to pop out of the shells. But the ones you showed me on that sight, which a little pricey at first, have the built in center pilot drill to drill the hole for re hook shank, and then you can get the shapers that fit a dremel tool (which I already have) Anyway, I think I'll at least order a 3/8 cutter for bluegills and a 1/2 or 5/8 for bass poppers. [VFB] Re: : Pre formed foam popper heads???
Jimmy: Thanks a lot for the tips. Didn't even dawn on me that Hobby Lobby would sell those corks. I was having to give what I thought (65 cents each I think) was a lot of money for them at Lowe's and Home depot. 65 cents each (plus tax LOL) don't sound like much, but if you lose as many poppers as we do to the trees, weeds, and bushes it adds up pretty quick. I have made some by gluing the 2mm foam sheets together but never have tapered them like your flies in the pic, but I think I like that tapered look a lot better and I think it would give the poppers a better gurgling action, which I think attracts the fish, specially bass. I also will try the foam with the adhesive on one side. I didn't know if that adhesive would hold up in water or not is why I didn't try it before now. The golf club shafts are a great idea too cause of that automatic, built in taper. I'll have to try that. I can get irons at the Goodwill store near here for a cpl bucks each..I'm trying to get a bunch of these made up for next year 9 I HOPE I have more time to fish next year than this year), and they take me a long time to build them cause of all the steps involved, like the painting them with two coats of color, then two coats of clear, but the pre colored foam would take those steps out and save me a lot of time. Chuck: For most of my popper bodies, panfish and bass alike, I use regular bottle corks that I buy really cheap at Hobby Lobby. They're already tapered and are vavailable in assorted sizes. I also make my own stamp-out cutters out of old steel golf shafts from Irons. With a golf shaft, I can get cutters from 5/8 all the way down to 5/16, depending on the kind of shaft I use. What I do is take the old shaft and cut it off in 2 increments. Then I sharpen the round edge of one end of the 2 pieces of shaft, so that it will readily cut. Then I sit the cutter on the piece of foam, etc. that I need to cut and placing a small, but sturdy block of wood on top of my cutter, hit it with a hammer. All these poppers are round, cylindrical. To taper them, I use my dremel tool. When stamped out, they are eaasy to push out of the cutter. Attached are some multi-colored poppers I made out of some stuff got from Hobby Lobby. It comes in sturdy foam/rubber sheets that have an adhesive backing on one side. I can stamp all one size or stair-step them down to give the popper a more streamlined appearance. Then I take the rounds and using the adhesive side, stick them together. You can alternate colors like those in the pic, or you can use all one color. When done, I shape them with a dremel tool and add rubber legs, hook, tail and eyes. Sounds complicated, but once you go through the process, it's easy. There's other tubing that will work just as well, but I've been repairing / reshafting golf clubs for near 30 years and always have some old shafts lying around. There IS a quite (REALLY quite) simple way to send however many pictures in whichever size you want in REALLY small mails... 10 1Mb pictures or or 10 10Kb pictures... no difference at all... 50 1Mb pictures or 50 10Kb pictures... no difference at all. I just sent myself 100 4Mb pictures in one mail. Mail size: 56Kb... The guy for the job... PHOTOBUCKET!!! --- Pro's (besides 'curtesy against dial-up user', 'mail size limits', 'no spending time on re-sizing work'): * For an Outlook user a 2Mb message, will stay as 2 extra Mb's in the *.pst file also after the message is deleted... this will stay as merely dust. * Saving the picture on the computer (for the recipient) is just as easy as it is as saving it when it comes in the form of an attachment. Drag the PICTURE from the browser to a folder on your computer and you have the file in the folder (just as you would have, dragging/dropping an attachment)... drag the ICON IN THE ADDRESS FIELD to the folder and you have a 1Kb shortcut to the picture, which is all you need if you just plan to watch it (as long as the fly isn't deleted by the PhotoBucket account owner that is). * It's both faster and easier to get it into the message - 'copy/paste'. No additional operations like dragging files or 'Attach file' browsing, which is also easier to forget just because it's an additional operation... and, of course, it's quicker to send 50 2Mb pictures in one email than it is to send them in 25 emails. Con's * You ONLY(?) have 500MB storage in your free account... then you have to bother registering for a second free one. Major drag... LOL -- Yeah, but then I have to log on to PhotoBucket to upload them before I can get the link so I can send it... nah! INCORRECT!!! Not necessarily. There IS a lazy man's way. You can send the picture(s) in an email to your PhotoBucket account and upload it that way. Then wait a bit for the confirmation message(s) from PhotoBucket and you're good to go. You'll get the link(s) in the message(s)... separate confirmation message for each picture. So the only extra job: Sending the heavy picture files in a separate mail... only that one, not to the list. /Nick --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. There are some links on it, but they do not work. As you see at the extension, it is not html, but xml data. therefore the display of the page depends upon if your browser can handle the xml and the xslt stylesheet (for the IT guys among us). I'm in detail interested, whether older browser or macs can show the page. If it works, it is much easer to create the pages for swaps than do it conventionally with HTML. answers pls to rene.zillm...@t-online.de Thanks Rene --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group. Are you made to feel welcome and appreciated. Do they thank you for your time and effort. Do they feed you. Do they keep you hydrated during the day. Do they help you if you need it, with load in and load out, etc., etc., etc., etc..all these things play and part in your decision making when deciding wether or not you wanna go back. [VFB] Re: Show tying and sales, and 'bennies' -is it worth it?
Sounds like the Sportsman's Expo in Denver really treated you well. Tying shows, like Tony says, are different in how they handle tiers and vendors and selling. Here's my short history: I've been tying at Casper shows since the early 80's, so expenses were no big deal, and I could sell to my heart's content. The 1st out-of-state show I was invited to tie at was the Internat. Sportsman's Expo in Denver in 1995, by Pete Parker. One $$ 'bennie' at that show was a nice personalized ExOfficio Fishing shirt, and the ISE logo on it was a calling card at shows that one had 'arrived' at celebrity status. It was explained to me that tying in the video theater there was a status symbol in the front range arena, and wearing the shirt was your 'badge'. The second benny was my free private tying table, where I could sell anything I wanted (sold lots of flies and took orders). Led to another benny: Ed Rice, the owner, saw my flies at the table and invited me to tie at the San Mateo Show a month later- all expenses paid, plus a free booth (not table) for me to tie and sell, and Cheryl to assist me. I earned it with five 12-hour days on the job. Sold tons of Fantasy Flies and took a lot of orders and met a lot of folks. Pete told me that was the only time he had ever seen Ed pick up tier expenses for any show. Another neat benny for the Denver Show is that I've been featured twice in the Denver Post Sports section at ISE time. Great publicity for my Fantasy Flies. The next show I was invited to was the next year FFF conclave at the Outlaw Inn in Kalispel, MT. Assistance - block of cheaper rooms and lunch tickets. Sold lots of flies there too. And met a ton of real celebrities, one of whom was Lefty. After that, the Green River Fly Swap had me tie at their show for 7 years (after which they lost their city funding), paying an appearance fee ($$), mileage, and picking up the room. Also got a free double booth as the main co-attraction along with (different years) Jack Dennis, Mike Lawson, Gary Lafontaine. Got to sell boucou flies. Got free concession food and drinks, coffee, etc. Plus the red-carpet treatment. Have tied at the Denver ISE every year since. Get a new shirt each year and free entrance for me and Cheryl. Last year they gave Cheryl an honorary shirt just for being stuck with Buggs. So what's that- about 14 ISE shirts now? LOL Different shows come with different bennies. Chuck gave me me the front door booth for the first year, and then a double tying table each year after that. He usually gets good room deals, and Cheryl gets free entry. I like tying for Chuck as he realizes how important the tiers are to his show. He has a special low price for his show shirts. I have about twenty fly-show fishing shirts now, way too many to wear. The West Denver TU years ago (2001+/-) gave me the celebrity booth with Tom Whiting and paid expenses for me to tie until the locals got upset, and so I quit that show- too much politics. Made a lot of good friends there, tho. I've tied across the country from Florida to Cal. to New Orleans to New Jersey to Holland - dozens and dozens of shows of all kinds in between. It's all been good- no complaints really- just burned out. It's always a decision made freely to tie or not to tie. The show I'll never forget was Holland, and the hospitality and generosity and comradery and... If I accepted every show invitation and was fabulously wealthy like Mark R., I'd be doing a show every weekend too, and fishing my way in between. Wait... Cheryl just said No way, Hose' . So I've decided now to stay at home, tie, and drink beer with Buggs and Dr. D, and make DVDs. Burp! It is being moved to a new site about an hour from Atlanta. But if they don't get it together, it wont be any better than it was in Callaway Gardens. We did the show at Callaway Gardens last year.and it was a disaster. Most councils (FFF) do a very good job of putting on a Conclave.some need to start all over from scratch and re-ThinK it through. We've done the Northeast Council Conclave, the Southern Council Conclave, the Southeast Council Conclave, the Gulf Coast Council Conclave, the Oregon Council Conclave, the Washington State Council Conclave, the Great Lakes Council Conclave and the FFF International Conclave. Bottom line is to support the FFF.nothin' goes perfect every time.people screw up.bitchin' for bitchin' sake dosen't help much. Most of the time it's a lack of communication and egos that throw a turd in the soup.what should be done is for survey sheets to be made up and have the councils ask the tyers what they liked and what they didn't. They need feedback to improve their act. But they need to ask for it.because most tyers are so nice and they do not wanna make waves, so they put up with things they shouldn't have to. And just don't bother to go to whomever and let it be know what can be done to improve the situation. Also, the council are ususally not going to incure any over and above expenses they do feel they really need to.air conditioning cost for example. They have a hard enough time finding a decent venue, and then the hotel fairgrounds or whoever it might be, wanna sock it to 'em on top of simply the space itself. So, everyone suffers because the idea is to make money.not spend it. So you end up with doors hanging wide open letting every fly on the planet in, instead of having temp control so everyone can be comfortable and relaxed. Reality is, common sense, aint common. That's peeps, and there aint a GOT DAMN thing you can do about that. if you don't like the way any one particular show is run or the way your treated. What non-fish (or very non-standard fish target) have you caught on a fly, and what's the story? People who complain there's no neat threads about fly-fishing, here's your chance. If you don't have a personal account, look up internet stories on strange creature fly-fishing encounters and post those. It doesn't have to be an intensional catch, even accidental counts. I can think of at least a half-dozen weird things I've caught on flies. 1. A bat. About 20 yrs ago, fishing at dusk, I hung a fly up in a tree branch, with the fly dangling over the river. I was going to try to flick the fly off the branch when a bat swooped down and hit the fly. He foul-hooked in his shoulder- mayby at the last second sensing the leader. Little guy was REALLY mad when I 'landed' him. Safe CR, though. DonO - Original Message - From: Jimmy D. [VFB] Books Fer Sale........
BTW, I have more than these two. But the books I was referring to that I have (unless the guy I asked first about them wants them) are both hardback, both FIRST editions and both in real good shape. They are HUGE LOL. They are: Nymphs: A complete guide to naturals and imitations, by Ernest Schwiebert copyright 1973 first edition Hatches: A complete guide to fishing the hatches of north American trout streams by Al Caucci and Bob Nastasi I want $25.00 each or $40.00 for both, plus either $4.00 Shipping for one, or $6.50 shipping for both. On Amazon (in the collector category that they are, being first editions) the range in price for the Nymph book is $70-$90 and up to over $131.00 in the NON collectible part. The Hatches book I'm not even showing ANY first editions, and the 2004 reprint sells from $9.44-$95.00. If I listed it on there as a first edition, I'd put a LOT more than $9.44 on it LOL..And would eventually get it. I have a few more trout books I'll list asap as all I do is bluegill and bass fish, those are the type books I'm hunting, so if anybody has any of those they'd trade. Let's talk. OFFlist... [VFB] GREAT SITE... Not fishing related......... but it could be LOL......
Folks: I'm posting this site i found even though it's not exactly fly fishing related. But it could be like I said, cause you can get answers to almost any subject here, probably including fly fishing. And men especially, never need an owners manual for something till AFTER we have thrown it away LOL. And replacement owners manuals are #1 hard to find and #2 usually have to be BOUGHT. This site has them all for FREE. Yesterday i found and printed out an owners manual for an old Craftsman chainsaw I have. Then, just now i printed one out for an old Coleman brand generator I have. But this site has just about any answer to any question you could have for around the home type stuff, from tuning up a lawn mower, to teaching a teen ager to drive. It's www.managemyhome.com Hope it helps somebody, Chuck Please see our fly fishing hand made furled leaders at: http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/you_wear_it_well_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQ_ipgZ --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the VFB Mail group.
