Of course all of the VFBers will have dibs on the lowest serial #’s with
signature.
I’ve got about a 1000 flies tied up for samples, so there will be a lot in each
DVD.
I’ve been toying with the idea of doing a simple introductory You-tube to just
give a basic understanding on what the Rope-dub is and why it differs from
other dubbing techniques. I’ve been considering as least part of it as
side-by-side videos comparing my roping to looping, split thread, sticky wax,
Polly’s, etc.
Any ideas/comments? Yea or Nay?

His P.T. has gone well as far as the knee

made him tore his stomach up. He wasn't able to eat
for 4 days. He finally told them that he wasn't going

But now the pain is really bad (typical for joint

Hi Gang, Sorry about being absent from the list so long. Lotta
catching up to do.

Things are looking better. I meet with the Baylor Sports Medical
Group led by Doctor Jon Ellis each Thursday. Doc's group is the
one that takes care of all injuries, etc. for, Baylor especially football.
Highly recommended by Steve Corwin, one of my fly fishing Buds.

I meet with him or one of his PA's each Thursday. Spend an hour doing
really tough excercises with my feet. He said that basically he would
be re-building my FLAT feet, not to worry, they'll Git-Er-Done. I can
tell that my anklesare getting better. If this keeps up, his 6 month plan
will make a new man out of me. Soon as I finish the foot stuff, I'll move
to my calves and thighs which have atrophied, because of not being able
to work them out on my Nautilis :knock off weight machine. The feet
play a big part in my calves and thighs. Push with ankles, leg lifts,
ankles. Not doing much walking outside of walmart and HEB grocery.

That's the good stuff. Now, the not so good. I've been diagnosed with
Essential Tremor. I have very small tremors in my hands, which really,
don't bother me except when I get aggravated or frustrated. Even then
the tremors don't interfere with anything, because when I think about
it, the tremor goes away. t.

Funny thing. .When a temor starts, I can just (tell it to quit, in my mind
in my mind and it does. No shaking when holding coffee cup, fork,
etc. I can hold my notes and there's no tremor. I can hold a sheet of
paper and No Tremor, mind takes over and prevents the shaking
My only bother is when I really get PO'ed , then my hands will shake
until I tell them to stop. They Stop. very rare for essential tremor to
morph into Parkinsons. We have no family history of it.

Doc said if the tremors start bothering me, he can give me a medication
that will control them. The doc said most people with essential tremor
never seek treatment never seek medical help.

My back still acts up, but it's been six months since I last had a chiropractic
treatment.. The pain on/in my sacroaliac comes and goes. A hot shower usually
quiets it down.

JIMMY D

P. S. I've had no problems tying my flies and I'm optimistic about the foot
getting back into good enough shape to WADE !!! :-)

No decision yet on SOW BUG :-\

I use the 16/0 size for my smaller flies and cann't fault it. It is very

[VFB] An idea for a swap

2012-10-29 Thread haerbob3
I am wondering if there would be an interest in a tube fly swap. Just testing
the waters right now. The swap would take place mid to late January. I would
hast but need to wait for our winter shut down

p.s.,

Bob, all that really means is that you've been tying longer than I have. I
started at what I thought at the time was rather late in life. Over 30 years
ago!! ;-)
a.

That really DOES date you. And I thought I was getting myself 'dated' when I
found some stuff from a fly shop that closed in 1985.

Well I can blame it on Al, he said we should take the short cut to school that
morning. We did not have school buses back then. Either walked to school of had
someone take you,
Funny that I brought this up, I just got a call from Al about an hour ago and
we talked for 45 minuets, I reminded him about this and he remembers it real
well. We have stayed in touch all these years. He lives in North Jersey.

But I had always tied them in bluegill size, on about size 8 hooks. Till now. I
JUST finished this Bass Froggie. It's tied on a 2/0 or 3/0 wide gape bass
hook (I think) and measures just over 4 long. Ain't the prettiest froggie ever
tied, but I think late in the evening, just before dark, when the bass start
feeding on top. I think they'll KILL this thing. Chuck

Since all of this talk about Hex's got me thinking how few patterns of these
you see. I used to go up to a bamboo rod makers gathering in Grayling, Michigan
that had a famous hex hatch about the end of June. I won't make it up there
this year, but I miss seeing those enormous mayflies and the sounds they made.
When they would hit the surface there were so many of them that the pops
sounded like popcorn popping just muffled. When they were mating in the air it
sounded like linens of tissue paper being ruffled together. And the sight of
them in swarm was something of epic proportions that I simply fail to put into
words. But I digress.

Anybody up for a swap? I have never hosted, so do we have a swap meister who
would like to?

Regards,

Scott

Re: [VFB] tube fly supplies

2012-04-02 Thread haerbob3
I will be tying for all species living in Michigan I am blessed to have vast
varsities to fish for. Across the street form my house a good warm water lake.
Half hour drive steelhead, hour drive one of the best smallmouth lakes in the
world Lake St. Clair. I would lie to use the rotary function tubes just seem to
lend themselves to it I think. I am also willing to trade some materials for
supplies to get me started, my wife says I should open a store!!!

Hi BobH

What species of fish are you planning to tie the tubes for? I tie quite a lot
of tubes and use them primarily for steelhead although they can also be used
for coho (silvers) and other salmon. In the smaller sizes they would work for
cutthroat trout and rainbows.

Presumably you have a Renzetti vise hence the request for the renzetti head
with three mandrels, however this is certainly not essential and there is a
less costly alternative. I have a Renzetti traveler vise but don't use it for
tying tube flies. There are several versions of devices that one can fit in a
standard vise complete with a set it different sized pins such as Eumer, HMH,
Veniard and so on.

Suggest you take a look at http://www.canadiantubeflies.com/emaillist.html

Update

If anyone knows the email addies of any of the 'missing', you might send them a
note to see if they still check in once in a while. The list has been slow, so
maybe they just catch up once every 4 months or so.

Maybe later this year, after fishing season, we can have a 'one for the road'
IOFF swap of the remaining IOFFers and guests tiers.

If I missed you or you sign in, just turn your name blue and reply it to the
list.

If there are 'Newbies' on the list that want to sign in, I started a list at
the bottom of this email:

(Here is also a list, incomplete but...:

this substandard junk as part of their packages. Our cable TV conveter lasts 6
months and then goes out, and never works that well. Guess where it's made.
Same for the remote. All junk and time consuming.

Off my soap-box for now...
It does seem that some of us are finally catching on, but it may be too late.
Many of our own manufacturing companies have fallen apart or moved outside the
U.S. for cheap labor.
We need a revolution in the manufacturing industries or something...???

Subject: [VFB] Seasons Greeting from Germany

Hi list,
seasons greetings from Germany, I hope you will have all a great x-mass
evening with lots of hackle, dubbing, waders, rods and reels under your
tree (or wherever in the world you expect your gifts.)
Here in my space we have a very unusual event 'white xmas'. Well,
sometimes we get snow, but usually it is melting away very soon. Right
now it's snowing since days, and we have a lot of impact on traffic,
airports are shut down, autobahns as well, and even good ol' trains (ok,
the high speed ones) are stopped because they have difficulties with the
power supply.
I'm safe at home, taste some wine and have a blast with family. Have to
clean up the tying area, because the daughter needs some space.
Have to go down now, fire up the tile stove, and check for the red wine.
Have a good time my friends on the list
Rene

BTW: Anybody interested on a xmas tree swap? I'm willing to host

[VFB] OT: Possible Problems with drinking HOPPY Beers

2010-04-20 Thread haerbob3
Possible Problems with drinking HOPPY Beers

Last month, Montreal University and scientists released the results of a recent
analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones in beer. Men should take
a concerned look at their beer consumption. The theory is that beer contains
female hormones (hops contain Phytoestrogens) and that by drinking enough beer,
men turn into women.

To test the theory, 100 men each drank 8 schooners of beer within a one (1)
hour period.

It was then observed that 100% of the test subjects, yes, 100% of all these
men:-

1) Argued over nothing.

2) Refused to apologize when obviously wrong.

3) Gained weight.

4) Talked excessively without making sense.

5) Became overly emotional

6) Couldn't drive.

7) Failed to think rationally, and

8) Had to sit down while urinating.

No further testing was considered necessary!!

Subject: [VFB] Tiny Fly Question

OK all you tiny fly tying experts LOL.. I am stumped with a problem.. I took
the advice of tying a bigger fly, then working my way down in hook sizes till I
get to where I want. Problem is, I'm tying (or TRYING) my Pink Panfish
Producer, and I'm down to a size 20. Problem is, the gold bead for the head.
The ones I have are either too small to go around the sharp bend in the hook,
or they are too big, and they either fall right off the eye end of the fly, or
get stuck, with the eye buried halfway inside the bead. I have tried the beads
front wards, backwards and sideways. Is there a secret to this??? Should I just
make the gold=bead head out of gold tying thread, or tiny tinsel?? Or do you
just not tie flies this small with a bead head on them?? Thanks for ANY help,
Chuck

Folks: I have a question on tying flies smaller than , say, a size 16. Or a
size 14 in some cases. Like, how do you get all the materials tied into (or
onto LOL) a Royal Wolff)??I have been reading as much as I can about bluegill
fly fishing and fly tying,.and I was just reading about tying foam ants, and it
said NOT to tie bluegill flies too small as the bluegill has a strong sucking
power for insects that drop onto the surface of the water and they'd even take
a size 28 in a foam ant and would hurt themselves as they'd swallow a fly that
small all the way down their throat. So, it said to go to a bigger fly. like a
size 18 or a 20. Well, I can barely even see a size 18 or 20 hook, even with my
reading glasses on, much less tie a fly on one. Does anybody here tie flies
regularly in a size 18 or smaller??? If so, what is your secret?? Thanks, Chuck

Christmas report from Sweden:

Normally, the daddy in the family goes out to buy the paper around 4pm... and
5-10 minutes later someone knocks on the door. An old guy with white beard, red
coat and a sack. Are there any good children here?

This year the daddy had planned to read the news on the web instead, so he
could be at home when Santa came. But we were going out for a while first... to
take a little walk and have a little fun in what our December provides:

http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/photos/before.jpg

When we got back in, got our clothes off (with as much snow on the inside as on
the outside), heated ourselves up with a little warm lemonade... we went into
the livingroom to wait for Santa to knock on the door. But apparently all of us
had missed him. When we went out, mommy forgot the trash bags inside and had to
go back in again (hehe)... and when she came back out, she forgot to lock the
door. Santa knocked, nobody opened... so he just walked in. When we came into
the livingroom, the presents were already there waiting!!!

http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/photos/after.jpg

Well, who needs Santa... as long as the presents are delivered. LOL

Merry Christmas to all of you,

/Niclas

I've just taken it one step further... yesterday I got too violent
with a couple of flies and the thread broke by the hook. But, like you
said memory. The ropes are still on my bench. Now I have tried another
technique.

You start with making a rope... and I mean a tight rope... and I mean
a very tight rope... and I mean a TOO tight rope. Then you cut that rope
from the bobbin and tie it in at the breaking point. Then you make another
one, lmost too tight. Now you have two ropes, one on the thread to your
bobbin and one hanging freely... and you can start your parallel weave!!
LOL

It's tricky but possible. And by having one of the strands(ropes)
connected to your bobbin, this is a parallel weave that you can practice
without having to cut the thread first... which became another one of those
chills I've been having. You can do this with other materials too... just
tried with antron and it worked like a charm. When the weaving was done, the
thread wasn't lying beside the vise, but it was in your hand, ready to be
wrapped around the antron strands. ;o)

        Nick,
        Cool fly. Better name.

        Also try this.
After you make your rope with the dubbing and hackle, compress it
towards the hook and re-tighten (like the shaping segment).  This works best
if you use monofilament for the core (or wire), and things get tight and
friction fights you.
You may have a 3 long rope that you can compress 30-50%, and it
will look way buggier, with better segments, and more dense.  It will also
feel more life-like to a fish.

Christmas Fly Swap

1. Simple - you only tie one fly and send me the digital photo of it.

2. Enclose tying instructions and Christmas message to the rest of VFB if you
like.

3. I put it on both my photobucket and flickr photo sites in a dedicated
Christmas fly   swap album, and I will post the web addresses so everyone
can see the flies.

Any fly as long as you can photograph it but must contain dear hair Christmas
colours would be nice but not compulsory

no money, no posting flies, just tie one and email the photo with instructions
to me
1.
2.  Jimmy Moore - Thor   Photo Received
3.  Walter Shockley -
4.  Jerry McKaughan - Tapps Bug  Photo Received

Since we can post photos here now, anybody want to do a 'Post My Mess' photo
thread.
I've found that if I do the 'rich text' and 'insert picture' command, the photo
shows up in a box I can downsize by dragging a corner.  Rene used to have to
post to his site, but now we can save him the trouble.

This may help one another with ideas on how to arrange materials and tools.
Don't clean up, as we need to know how it looks when flies are being tied.

Any takers?

try you local salerooms for second hand furniture and get a writing bureau

this ones on English eBay
Item No. 160329244098 (Cut and paste number into eBay search bar)
plenty of storage foldaway work top and bookcase all in one place.

With the recession there should be more of this sort of thing turning up at
auction houses

I came home to find my Edwardian solid walnut bureau full of fly tying gear
been emptied onto the floor and moved downstairs by Linda.  I now have a modern
oak one in my office as a tying desk, it just not as nice...

Bob, if mine aren't there, let me know and I will try to do a Marathon tying
session to get them to you. We just got, (the 2nd of this month), a new post
office. The old Temp one was questionable at best. Even Amanda had to
contact collages several time due to things they sent not getting here. So
it is possible that some things going out were re-routed some how.

We now have our Permanent Postmaster Gina and she takes our mail Very
Seriously. She is so good, I have to make lunch for her at least 3 times a
week.

Sorry to say Jimi that I never received them. I am going to look around. I
but all the packages in the same box as they arrive. I don't even open them
till I am ready to sort and send them out.

afford a new one. Bear with me please. I will be sending out some (Fly received
messages today for both FO and VFB tyers)

Wife and i went fishing twice last week at Eagle lake. She hooked a BIG one
that I lost in getting it in the net. My net is 18 deed and the trout's tail
was 6-8 past the rim. He did his last shake and out he flew (the jig was stuck
in the net. She yelled, I cried s was the Biggest trout I have seen up there in
10 seasons A good seven lbs. But we did come home with 3 fish weighing 11 lbs
total the first day and two weighing 5 lbs the second day, Now I have some
cured roe for some late in the winter fishing at Almanor, I bopught a brine
from wallyword and it is pretty good with my smoker.

Bob: Since you don't answer my off list questions, please take me OFF the swap
if you have me in it. I'm not trying to be ugly, but if the meister don't have
good communication with the tiers and answer their questions, it will only lead
to confusion, Thanks, Chuck
