RE: [VFB] Re: Shipping flies
I agree, Ive had little problem with customs, my problem is having flies stolen by the post office, usually the British post office. I just posted Picric Acid dyed fly materials to the USA. Picric acid is an explosive compound both as crystal and liquid (google it) iain I believe that one of the reasons I get my flies through customs with no problems is that the pattern with all the parts is on the card attached to the fly. Here is the link: http://groups.google.de/group/vfb-mail/web/alexandra-variants I learned during my research on this topic, that the Alexandra was originally tied with a red tag instead of a red tail. [VFB] FW: You could have heard a pin drop!
Subject: FW: You could have heard a pin drop! Thomas Crapper Co. Ltd., The Stable Yard, Alscot Park, Stratford-on-Avon, Warwickshire. CV37 8BL JFK'S Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, was in France in the early 60's when DeGaulle decided to pull out of NATO. DeGaulle said he wanted all US military out of France as soon as possible. Rusk responded Does that include those who are buried here? DeGaulle did not respond. You could have heard a pin drop ~~ There was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break, one of the French engineers came back into the room saying 'Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intended to do, bomb them?' A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: 'Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck. We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?' You could have heard a pin drop. ~~ A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S. , English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English. He then asked, 'Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?' Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied, 'Maybe it's because the Brit's, Canadians, Aussie's and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German.' You could have heard a pin drop. ~~ AND THIS STORY FITS RIGHT IN WITH THE ABOVE... Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on. You have been to France before, monsieur? the customs officer asked sarcastically. Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously. Then you should know enough to have your passport ready. The American said, 'The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it. Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France ! The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained, ''Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find a single Frenchmen to show a passport to. Joyce What fly do you intend to tie ? Herl bodies often start at the barb and silk/quill bodies ofton start at the point. Roger Fogg - A Handbook of North Country Trout Flies shows a general starting point between point and barb. Roger Wooleys flies from the 1930's are started past the barb Sylvester Nemes -Two centuries of soft hackle flies generally start between point and barb. Let me know the patterns you after after i will see if i can supply photos iain I've been requested to tie some Spider flies..I need to know where the body starts..should it be over the barb or the point. [VFB] Re: Tying tube flies
I tie tubes from 3/8 inch to 2-1/2 inch. I think i did a poor explanation of the blind eye hook. The blind eye hooks have tapered shanks, so you just push the hook up the shank till it jams. If you want to rotate the fly to access the other side just twist tube round the shank. To fish the fly slip the tube fly onto the leader, tie the single or double or treble hook of your choice to the tip of your leader, fly slides down leader till it reaches the hook. to keep the hook in line with the tube slip a piece of neoprene tube onto the bottom of the tube, pull the hook into it, hook and fly stay in line. why not organise a tube fly swap iain From: phxflyt...@cox.net To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Subject: [VFB] Re: Tying tube flies Date: Fri, 20 Nov 2009 08:48:22 -0700 Thanks iain, but I dont have any of that type of hook and I dont plan on tying any salmon flies. [VFB] Re: eyes
same as a furled leader, but simpler. put a nail in a bench and a cuphook in a battery drill tie end of thread onto cup hook wind thread around nail and cuphook about 5 foot apart as many turns as you require to give 50% of the finished diameter (it will eventually be doubled) tie off thread onto cuphook and adjust so all threads are even tension, keeping gentle tension wind clockwise till length reduces by 10%. (keep a note of the time it takes) get an assistant to help keep tension as you fold in half and transfer ends from nail onto cuphook as well. with assistant keeping tension wind anti clockwise for half the previous time you should now have 2.5 feet of stable eye braid. use a pair of hackle pliers to stop loose end unraveling as you cut pieces off. [VFB] Re: Was: QUOTE FOR THE DAY, Now - what other non-fish and other species do you fish for w/flyrod?
my claim to fame is an Adult Herring Gull which Hooked in Shields Harbour. It was returned after unhooking iain Date: Wed, 11 Nov 2009 11:07:05 -0600 From: ray...@earthlink.net To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Subject: [VFB] Was: QUOTE FOR THE DAY, Now - what other non-fish and other species do you fish for w/flyrod? OK, I'll start the thread. Besides trout, I've fished for all kinds of panfish, largemouth, smallmouth, guadalupe, and spotted bass, salt water blues and speckled trout Yeah, and I've hooked a few tires, rods and reels, trotlines, etc. Caught one cottonmouth and gave my boat to him, while I walked on water to get to the bank. and lest I forget, there was that Owl I hooked on the Rayado, and the young black bear who stole my tippet, fly and my big brown. :-D JIMMY D Don Ordes wrote: If all the trout in the world suddenly disappeared, I know a bunch of folks who'd go right on with their fly tying as though nothing happened. :-PJimmyD Jimmy, this is a neat idea for a new thread. What non-fish (or very non-standard fish target) have you caught on a fly, and what's the story? People who complain there's no neat threads about fly-fishing, here's your chance. If you don't have a personal account, look up internet stories on strange creature fly-fishing encounters and post those. It doesn't have to be an intensional catch, even accidental counts. I can think of at least a half-dozen weird things I've caught on flies. 1. A bat. About 20 yrs ago, fishing at dusk, I hung a fly up in a tree branch, with the fly dangling over the river. I was going to try to flick the fly off the branch when a bat swooped down and hit the fly. He foul-hooked in his shoulder- mayby at the last second sensing the leader. Little guy was REALLY mad when I 'landed' him. Safe CR, though. [VFB] Re: in case now silk eyes
If you have difficulty getting gut for eyes you can always make furled cream silk eyes. (Practice on cheap sewing thread) They look OK framed but I wouldnt fish them. use similar method to furled leaders. iain From: markflie...@hotmail.com To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Subject: [VFB] Re: in case Date: Tue, 10 Nov 2009 20:54:07 -0700 Mike, also way back in the days.when most all blind eye hooks had squared off hook shanks and no tapers.the gut was usually tyed in almost the complete length of ther shank..so as to make it less likely to pull out while fighting big fish. But with the advent of tapered hooks and specially since we most often do not fish these flies.the guy in most often nowdays, only tyed in to fit inside the taper. Which is why, when you are sucking on it to prepare it for shaping into a neat little ring to make the eye, you should also nibble on the two tags ends. You just bite right on both ends to fray them and prepare them for seperation, so you can stager your cuts. You wanna trim the gut on a taper to keep the taper on the hooks smooth and even. So say you have three strands on the piece your working with.after you get it bout half way lashed down.you seperate the strands and make graduated cuts of the three strands individually and continue lashing. That's how you keep a nice taper for your body. OK OK guysjust relax a little. The world hasn't collapsed...yet. I apologise for any issues that may have arisen BUT I have been out of touch with EVERYONE because... 1. my computer is Dell crap. 2. I have been pulling 110+ hour weeks for a couple months now 3. my flies were mailed from Bali by a wife who forgot to mail them before heading overseas. It has been a month now but if you think the mail is a problem, you should try making a phone calll. I can do nothing about the slow mail, but you should decide what to do. That being said, and whilst there can be no excuse for not mailing flies or keeping in contact, there is no need for a blackballing anyone. We are not communist hunters. I think that I have been fairly consistent over the previous 5 years in terms of swaps, having completed over a dozen or so. I think it is the same of most people on the list. I think only once my flies didn't make it, but things cannot always be controlled. I hope that I can become involved with this list again as I once was. [VFB] Re: We Need a BLacklist
Whilst I can understand the feelings of people who are running swaps or entered into swaps, and have to cope with dropouts who fail to apologize or give reason for failing to complete their agreed task, Blacklists are an unwelcome and ineffective way of getting flies in on time. The last person I heard about in the US who really liked blacklists was Senator Joseph McCarthy. It would be more effective to encourage good manners and announce our dropping out as soon as is known. The VFB is an unusual group of people, Poor to wealthy, Blue collar to scientist, mostly without any connection or interest other than fishing flies. Our commitments as individuals to house and work will of course result in these individuals dropping off the grid from time to time. We should only wish them well and hope they can feel welcome to return sometime. But it would be polite for all of us to say if they are dropping out of the damn swap. iain From: nev.gosl...@shaw.ca It seems to me that we need to establish a blacklist of those persons who sign up for a swap and then fail to communicate with the swap master or other swap participants. It is ok if a person has to drop out for valid reasons, or even if they have taken too much on and can't continue AS LONG AS THEY COMMUNICATE. Those that do not communicate should be balcklisted and stuck off IMHO. BY taking a position in the swap, it is quite possible that they have prevented someone else from participating. Canada From: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com [mailto:vfb-m...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Mark Romero Iain, i've tried to get ahold of John Bennett 3/4 times in the last few months..no luck. mark From: iainsh...@hotmail.com Still waiting for flies iain SECOND Traditional Winged Wet Fly Swap If you entered both swaps you only pay postage once.
