Re: [VFB] Sparrow

2013-05-31 Thread Hans Weilenmann
Henk already addressed your question. Most tying threads split readily. A
notable exception is Uni-thread, which is 'bonded' thread - a resin is
incorporated with the filaments, essentially glueing them together into a
'round' thread. The bond can be broken, with nail-edge pressure for
example, but certainly is not the easiest thread which comes to mind when
planning to do split thread techniques ;-)

My staple thread is Benecchi 12/0 (also available in 6/0, 8/0, and 10/0) -
I find it consistent, quite strong. and it twists and untwists/flattens -
key characteristics for doing split thread - very easily.

Cheers,
Hans

Subject: Re: [VFB] Sparrow

I'm not Hans, but I have been known to split hairs, errr thread too.

Not all flies require split-thread (dubbing techniques). Split-thread dubbing
is an alternative to dubbing-loop techniques that can offer superior results
wherever it is a viable alternative. My prime example is the split thread
dubbing-and-CDC-fibers (clamp transfer technique) caddis pattern popularized
(and possibly invented - I haven't researched that) by Marc Petitjean.

All non-monofilament threads can be split, some easier than others. In general,
non-twisted non-bonded threads are easier to split than bonded, twisted, or
bonded-twisted threads. Danville flymaster e.g. is very easy, Gudebrod 6/0 and
8/0 (currently only available as Orvis thread?) are easy, UNI threads need to
be untwisted and 'unbonded' and take significantly more effort. My personal
favourite if I want to tie with split-thread techniques are the Gudebrod
threads, for ease of splitting coupled with overall quality.

2013-05-30 Thread Alan Di Somma
Hans:

I just wanted to thank you again for sending me the link for the Sparrow.

I tied up a bunch of them for a friend in three colors.

He was ecstatic and could not wait to try them.

He had caught quite a few trout on the pattern last year but could find any to
buy. He is gone for several days this week and plans to use them. I will post a
is hing report next week but I just wanted to thank you.

As a side benefit, I learned how to split the thread in order to dub.

  Alan,

In case Hans isn't awake at 3:33 a.m.:

Hans has two versions on his website. The one tiied by John
Ridderbos, is Jack Gartside's original recipe:
  http://www.danica.com/flytier/jridderbos/sparrow.htm

The other one, tied byTim Didas, has a bushier (marabou) tail.
  http://www.danica.com/flytier/tdidas/sparrow.htm

FINALLY, the original recipe and step-wise instructions are
on the originator's website, Jack Gartside (I miss that crazy guy):
  http://www.jackgartside.com/step_gartside_sparrow.htm

I don't know who is keeping Jack's website up now that Jack
has sailed off to his eternal fishing hole, but whoever it is should be
thanked. Lots of good info there.

  Hope this helps.
