Brian: It is tied with Vernielle. The one you photo you attached has a metal bead. I have only recently seen it tied this way. It is usually tied without one. In order to tie one you must take a cigarette lighter and singe both ends of the Vernielle to taper the ends. This pattern was developed for the San Juan River in New Mexico, USA. It is used by many fly fishers in Arizona in Lee’s Ferry, which is the tail water from Lake Powell. I have also heard of it being used in other places here. Does the term” San Juan Shuffle” mean anything to you. It is a way of stirring up the bottom of the San Juan River by shuffling your feet, there by stirring up some food sources . The rainbows can be very large and just swim around your feet and nudge you making you look down at them and you get startled and shuffle . Many fishermen do this as a general routine to stir up activity. The water is so clear and shallow that you can see many fish in the river. If you have any other questions I will be happy to help. It should be. The only problem making it illegal is the when the fish bunk into you legs, you do it out of reflex. I know because I just fished there in Sept. The fish are very big and just swim around your legs. By the way, one of the guys I was fishing with was using a 4 wt. rod that was extremely slow. It looked like a noodle. He hooked into a good one that I saw was at least 25-28. He was fighting it for a while until it decided he had enough of the and headed down river. Well you should have seen him running down after it. Several minutes later he came back up to where I was fishing with a rather dejected look on his face. Re: [VFB] ooops
I guess if you get caught here in Arkansas that is when it is illegal. As for big fish on a 4 wt. I have one of the first blanks made by Global Dorber to feel like bamboo. It is a Graphite rod made from Ultra Weave cloth. It is an experimental blank and it is a bit soft. A few years ago when I was fishing about every day I fished Crooked Creek a lot for Smallmouths. This one season, was Carp season for some reason. I was not fishing for them. I hooked seven Carp that season but never landed a one. My fishing partner managed to grab one just ahead of the tail but could not hold on to it. All except one was hooked on a Chili Pepper. One that was hooked on a sz 12 fly that was tied on a Scud Hook, straightened out the hook. The others broke my 5X tippet. Like the guy you mentioned, I went down the creek trying to get it to where I could land it. Yes it was a thrill. Over the years, I have hooked into other Carp and all have broken off.
