[videoblogging] Re: Mobile vlogging!

2005-07-26 Thread Andy Carvin

Mobile use in Tanzania and across Africa is gaining momentum all the
time, and users continue to confound researchers with their creativity
 in using the devices.

Already the West has started to look to Africa and the developing
world for new ideas as to where to take the technology next.

I've been in Ghana for the last week conducting video blogging and podcasting workshops.
The consensus seems to be that mobile casting will be a major revolution here, both for
uploading and downloading content. The networks need a lot of improvement, though; I
haven't been able to find mobile data services for my Treo here. I did, though, manage to
use someone else's Treo 650 to post a short video to my blog last week. The national
radio network, Radio Ghana, interviewed me about it for last night's evening news
broadcast. (I actually managed to catch some of it while riding in a taxi last night - the
cabbie didn't believe it was me until he heard my voice. grin I recorded some of it and
will post it later to my blog, once I can get FTP to work again here in Accra...)

I remember there was an edition of The Economist a few months back
with the front page title: The real digital divide - showing a cell
 phone, not a computer.

Yeah, but that article has been highly criticised for taking a myopic view of technology,
assuming that mobile phones will be able to serve _all_ technology needs for people in the
development world. It's just as incorrect as saying that a laptop is the sole device anyone
will every need. Different tasks require different tools. But anyway, that's a discussion for
another list, perhaps.

So let's forget our G5's and Pentium 4's with Adobe Premiere Pro or
iMovie for a moment. Let's talk about videoblogging without the
 computer, without the webcam.

I'll definitely let the group know if anyone here in Ghana starts trying it. Perhaps Mustapha
at beirutspring.com will do it, since he's the one who let me borrow his Treo last week.
We'll see.

[videoblogging] Ripping a DVD+R to AVI or MOV

2005-07-26 Thread strollingbones2

Hey Gang,

I have not the slightest interest in pirating commercial DVDs (I'm a
Netflix subscriber, so why bother?) but I do have some uncopyrighted
videos on DVD+R that I want to rip and recycle into other products.

I have poked around on the web a bit, and all the info I can find seems
directed at movie pirates and involves some rather elaborate efforts to
defeat the DVD copy protections.

Does anybody have a simple, one or two step solution to take a homemade
DVD+R and rip into a MOV or AVI file?

Thanks in advance!

so I'll be somewhat offline at most times.

Would love to help out at this Saturdays' event in
SoHo. YouTube is currently 5 engineers, and I'm good

familiar with the service and I'll walk you thru it.

Although it's only several months old, we have
thousands of video clips, and tens of thousands of
streams on a daily basis already. Plans are to help
the vlogging community even more, but as you can
imagine, there are so many product features that we're
working on that the problem is prioritization.

Let me know if you'd be interested in me presenting on
Saturday. Maybe 10-15 min on how to use the service,
demonstrating uploading and streaming. Try it
yourself, it's fast and easy.

My cell is 917-721-8882, so give me a ring or reply to
this email and we can chat further.

Personally I would hold off on it. You get nearly nothing for the
registration fee, and on top of it, QT7 beta for Windows is crap.
Yes, its a beta, and therefore its bugginess is anticipated, but I
installed it because more and more vloggers are encoding their vids
with QT7 codecs on macs, and so, being on windows, I have upgraded to
see their goods.

Wait a while until QT7 is more mature on Windows, and then re-evaluate.

i use it on Win2K
be aware that you have to pay the quicktime pro tax EACH time you
upgrade and that there is an upgrade QT7 currently in beta I believe

the first time i got qtpro 6.5 on mac, there was an upgrade one month
later and apple's faq said pay up again or downgrade - your old key
won't work - it soon became apparent that I wanted to go up, not down -
those bastards

I think its a good tool for the money, but wait for QT7 if you can to
maximize your investment

[videoblogging] Re: Secrets of Video Compression

2005-07-26 Thread Mark Cyr

Great overview of the process and issues.
2 small points;
D1 video (a standard for digital broadcast video) is defined as
720x486 with a rectangular PAR (pixel aspect ratio). 640x480 is the
original definition of VGA video and has a 1:1 PAR (square pixels).
The conversion to square pixels is understood by a lot of today's
software, but if things start looking squashed either horizontally or
vertically, sombody's forgetting about it.

And that useless data in the whites and blacks is what most
cinematographers think makes their images great. 'Schmutz' and
video 'artifacts' in my experience are terms left over from the good
old days of analog video. Here they refer to nothing. Most good
codecs will do some form of basic noise reduction in the highlights
and lowlights in order to increase data rate. I think it's more
important to create an image you are happy with rather than say it
must be modified this way to make the codec happy.

Just my opinon, your mileage may vary...

Mark

wrote:
 Secrets of Video Compression

Well, I don't know how secret they are, but there are some
techniques you
can use to get the most out of your web video. A lot of it just has
to do
with understanding how data (read that movies) is transmitted over
thre net.
Some of it goes into how we poor humans perceive things like color -
- and
the differences between TV screens and a computer screen.

Standard D1 video (like what you see on TV) is 640 pixels wide by
480 tall
and is made up of 30 frames of two fields per second – or 60 images
at
640x480 per second of transmission. That's 27 Megabytes per second
of data
to process. Most computers can't even play that straight form the
hard
drive, they just don't have the processing power to handle all that
data
that fast. So to make it workable and playable we use a codec – for
compressor/decompressor to squeeze that data down to a manageable
level.
DV or the Digital Video codec is probably the video codec you're
most
familiar with. It's the near lossless compression technology that's
used in
most digital video cameras. It gives us about 5:1 compression. So
our
original 27 MB of data drops to about a fourth of its size. Even DV
source
material has a data rate of 3.5 megabytes per second (nearly 30,000
kilobits
per second), though. So to get that down to a size that can be
streamed over
the Internet to viewers with broadband connections, or even modems
requires
a combination of intelligent preprocessing and powerful compression
 technologies.

Basically there are two types of video compression—spatial and
temporal.
Spatial compression is compression within a single frame of video.
Usually
spatial compression techniques are based on the idea that computers
are
stupid. The easiest thing to compress is a solid color square.
That's
because the computer starts out by recording the square's color by
saying,
the pixel with coordinates x=0 and y=0 is black and then does
that for
every individual pixel. It's a little like marking your calendar
Monday
12:30 Lunch, Tuesday 12:30, Lunch, Wednesday 12:30 Lunch, etc.
A lossless
compressor like LZW (a common compressor for still images in TIFF
format)
rewrites the data to simply say, Lunch 12:30 Monday-Friday, or in
this
case all the pixels from 0,0 to 100,100 are black. It eliminates
all those
extra lines of data creating a smaller file without sacrificing any
of the
original information. Lossless compressors can usually compress up
to about
50% of the original file size, sometimes less, but almost never
more.

JPEG is also a spatial compression technology, but its what is
called
lossy. It works by throwing out some of the information stored in
the
image. Ideally it does this intelligently by discarding first that
information which is less useful. So at lower levels of compression
it
throws out things like colors that are outside of the range of
human
perception. As you apply higher levels of compression it relies
more on
averaging across pixels to flatten out the color range and create
less data
to store. That's why it's a bad idea to open and resave JPEG or
other lossy
compressed files. Every time you do they get recompressed, throwing
out more
data, till you eventually have crap.

Temporal compression is also lossy. It works by compressing across
many
frames of video—compression across time —and temporally compressed
frames of
video are called difference frames or delta frames. That's
because the
codec only records the differences between frames, not all the
information
in each frame. The best codecs use a combination of both spatial
and
temporal compression. The MPEG4 codec, for example sets a keyframe
(spatial
compression) every so often as a reference point, then uses delta
frames
 (temporal compression) between

Thanks Markus, I came into the office early today in hopes of leaving

I think I can out-smoke Eric.

Other topics will include QT7 and Windows media, one-click vlogging
solutions, advice on locating and using creative commons licensed music,
upcoming vlogger events and more. Also, starting with this meeting, we will
begin profiling and analyzing an individual vlogger's site in detail, going

Most number of cigarettes: Eric Rice

[videoblogging] Hello World!

2005-07-26 Thread Sheldon Pineo

Hi! My name is Sheldon Pineo and I'm from the Great White North of
Canada. I'm just starting to videoblog, and I'm loving every minute
of it!
I've been making videos for a few years, mostly focusing on the canine
sport of agility and in 2002 made a 90 minute video titled The
Wizards of Paws. Since then I've created other short pieces on
agility.
My latest topic is geocaching. I produce a video magazine called
Icenrye's Geocaching Videozine. So far there has been 4 episodes
and viewership is growing.
As for videoblogging, I'm finding it's a total release from the
formality of a proper production. I can turn on the camera and let
it rip. After watching many vlogs, I've started using some of the
techniques in my regular videos.
I hope to get lots of information on production, editing, compressing
and hosting along with tips on getting viewers and keeping my content
fresh to keep people coming back.
So, where am I? My home page is http://www.icenrye.com This has
links to my older stuff. My blog site is
http://www.icenrye.blogspot.com
So thanks for having me as a member and I'm looking forward to many
exchanges of information in the future.
Cheers!
